Into Gander Lake: Krista & Karen Hart Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

Nelson Hart was charged for the murders of his twin 3-year-old daughters, who died of drowning on August 4, 2002. He claimed that he had taken his girls, Karen and Krista, to the wharf at Little Harbour to play on the swing set. When Krista fell off of the wharf, Nelson got scared and ran for help. He didn’t know how to swim.

Nelson drove home for help. His wife Jennifer returned with him to the wharf. By the time they got there, both of their daughters were in the water. Karen was already dead and Krista died hours later in the hospital. This was a tragedy, but the Canadian police believed it was also a crime.

Join us at the quiet end for Into Gander Lake. Months after Krista and Karen’s deaths, a Mr. Big operation began with the goal of getting a confession from Nelson Hart. The first contact with Nelson for the Mr. Big sting was when one of the operatives offered to pay Nelson to help find a missing person. After that, he was asked to make deliveries on a regular basis. Nelson, who had lived his entire life in poverty, was paid very well. He began to feel like the operatives were his friends. Earning money beyond his greatest expectations, Nelson was anxious to become a full-time member of the Mr. Big gang. Eventually, he was talked into giving a confession to prove his loyalty to this fictional criminal organization.

Mr. Big sting operations have been banned in most countries. While these coerced confessions can provide compelling evidence of guilt, they are often unreliable and they have been responsible for wrongful convictions. But there are at least two sides to this story, which we will explore today.

    A Good Marriage Sep 07, 2021
    Show notes

Penny Scaggs had been married for 35 years when she sat down to play her piano on the evening of March 6, 1996. Her husband, Roger, had just left the house after dinner to return to his office. Normally, Penny would have washed the dishes right after dinner, but, with Roger away, she took advantage of the time alone to enjoy her music.

Penny must have been startled when she heard the unexpected sound of footsteps approaching her from behind. A steel pipe crushed the right side of her face, breaking her jaw. When Roger returned home, he called 911, telling the operator that he found his wife on the floor in a puddle of her own blood.

Join us at the quiet end for A Good Marriage: The Murder of Penny Scaggs. Penny devoted her life to her marriage, which she saw as a bringing together of three: Roger, herself, and God. But over the years, Roger appeared less devoted to this sacred union. Stories of infidelity and dishonesty circulated around their neighborhood and church community. He would become a predictable suspect in his wife’s death early on, but would the evidence support his guilt?

Memphis Matricide? Who Killed Jennifer Jackson? Aug 31, 2021
    Show notes

When Noura Jackson was a child, her mother’s life revolved around her. Noura’s parents had divorced when she was just a baby and she rarely saw her father, so the mother-daughter relationship was strong. But then Noura became a teenager.

Most teenage girls argue with their mothers, but Noura and Jennifer’s situation was more extreme than most. Noura was distant and critical with her mother. She was drinking, using drugs, and failing academically. It seemed that the more Jennifer tried to control her daughter, the more she rebelled.

Join us at the quiet end for Memphis Matricide? Early in the morning of June 5, 2005, 18-year-old Noura called 911. Jennifer had been stabbed 50 times. A wicker basket had been placed over Jennifer’s head, leading the police to believe that Jennifer had known her killer. At a time in her life when most people are graduating from high school and enrolling in college, Noura went on trial for the brutal murder of her own mother. But the question remains: did Noura Jackson commit matricide or was someone else responsible for this viscous crime?

He Used to Love Her… April Barber Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

The image of young married couple April and Justin Barber taking a moonlight walk on a warm Florida beach sounds ideal. They were supposed to be celebrating their third wedding anniversary. But within hours, everything changed.

A passing motorist made a call to 911. Justin was found bleeding and slumped behind the wheel of his SUV. He said that he and his wife had been attacked by an unknown gunman. First responders went to the beach to search for April while Justin was airlifted to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida.

Although he had been shot four times, Justin recovered quickly. He cooperated with police interviews, claiming to love his wife, despite his multiple infidelities and April’s friends’ claims that April had been planning to leave her husband. This is a chilling and tragic story of love, greed, and loss. Join us at the quiet end for He Used to Love Her, the April Barber story.

Bad Romance: Erika & Benjamin Sifrit Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

Among the thousands of vacationers who traveled to Ocean City, Maryland, on Memorial Day weekend, 2002, were two couples whose lives intersected, with horrific results. The first couple, Joshua Ward and Geney Crutchley, were good people looking for a relaxing weekend. But the second couple, Erika and Benjamin Sifrit, had much darker plans.

Join us at the quiet end for Bad Romance. At first glance, Erika and Benjamin appeared to be a typical young married couple, but they were a deadly match. They were big partiers, always looking for a bigger thrill. When drinking and drugs were no longer enough to satisfy them, they moved on to burglarizing businesses and carrying loaded guns. Then, one dreadful night, the Sifrits played a twisted game of murder and mayhem, showing their gravitation to violence and their complete lack of human empathy.

Daddy’s Little Girl: Erin Caffey Aug 10, 2021
    Show notes

Early in the morning of March 1, 2008, two men entered the Caffey family home in rural Alba, Texas. Terry Caffey and his wife Penny had been living a quiet, peaceful life in their modest country home with their three children, Erin, Matthew, and Tyler. A violent break in was the last thing the family could have ever expected.

After family members were attacked by armed assailants, their home was set on fire. Terry was shot five times, but he somehow managed to crawl to his only neighbor, about 400 yards away, leaving a trail of blood in his wake.

Join us at the quiet end for Daddy’s Little Girl. A home invasion and mass murder were not something the tiny Texas town of Alba had ever seen before. When 16-year-old Erin Caffey was found alive, she appeared to be in a state of shock. But right away, investigators wanted to know what Erin knew about the attack. Her father Terry rejected that idea that Erin could have any knowledge of the crime against her own family members, but he believed her older boyfriend was likely behind the attack.

    Show notes

In 2015, she and her husband Bill, who ran their own chiropractic practice together, were planning on retiring and finally taking their dream trip to Europe. But on July 20th, Mary didn’t seem like herself. She left work, complaining of an upset stomach and intractable vomiting. By the following morning, she was intubated in the hospital ICU.

Join us at the quiet end for Inside Job. Doctors caring for Mary in the hospital were puzzled by her sudden, severe illness. Within 36 hours, she had seven episodes of cardiac arrest. Her family came to be by her side, but the outcome was devastating. Mary Yoder was dead. Toxicology studies found a poison in Mary’s blood, solving the medical mystery, but the investigation into how and why she had ingested the poison had just begun.

The Beneficiary: Virginia McGinnis Jul 27, 2021
    Show notes

It was a beautiful day on the California coastline when 20-year-old Deana Wild agreed to take a day trip to Big Sur with older couple Virginia and Billy Joe McGinnis. This is a popular tourist spot, but the cliffs are dangerous with unstable earth near the edge and the rocky Pacific coast below.

Deana didn’t feel well that day but Virginia convinced her to walk along the cliff’s edge and pose for photos. As Deana looked out at the beautiful scenery, Virginia began to snap photos. Billy Joe put his arm around the listless young woman with his hand at her back.

Only Deana, Virginia, and Billy Joe knew what happened next. What we do know is that Deana fell to her death from the cliff that day. Her autopsy would show that she had clawed her fingernails into the earth trying to save herself. But the weight of her body or the push of her killer sent her plummeting to the rocks below.

Join us at the quiet end for The Beneficiary. When Deana fell to her death, the idea of it being an accident was feasible. But further investigation, including earlier suspicious deaths in Virginia McGinnis’ past and a life insurance purchase made the day before Deana’s death with Virginia as the beneficiary, led Deana’s mother and investigators to take a closer look into what happened that day.

Death of a Sugar Daddy: Bill McLaughlin Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

When 50-year-old multi-millionaire Bill McLaughlin answered 25-year-old Nanette Johnston’s classified ad back in 1991, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. The ad was directed at “wealthy men only” and Nanette described herself as a “classy, well-educated woman” who “knows how to take care of her man.” Clearly, Nanette was looking for a sugar daddy. Divorced and lonely, it seemed like a good deal to Bill.

Despite the concerns of Bill’s daughters, Nanette moved into Bill’s Newport Beach home. He took her on expensive trips, bought her a new car, and even gave her a generous allowance. But unknown to Bill, Nanette had secrets, including other boyfriends, during their relationship.

Join us at the quiet end for Death of a Sugar Daddy. After three years together, Nanette was out shopping when someone got into the house with a brand-new key and shot Bill six-times. There was no direct evidence linking Nanette to the crime, but she was the beneficiary of a $1 million life insurance policy. In 1995, Nanette was arrested and convicted for forging checks and stealing from Bill, but it would take another seventeen years to find and convict Bill McLaughlin’s killers.

Lady in the Water: Jan Roseboro Jul 06, 2021
    Show notes

When Jan Roseboro’s husband Michael found her unconscious and bleeding in their new swimming pool, there was no reason to suspect him of anything nefarious. Even though his 911 call was unusual, it wasn’t proof of a crime. But then a motive for murder was discovered: Michael’s lover, Angela Funk.

When Angela’s computer and phone records were examined, thousands of romantic and lustful messages with Michael Roseboro were discovered. In these messages, he professed his love for her and his desire to marry her. In fact, he was planning to leave Jan and ask for a divorce on July 22, the day Jan died.

Join us at the quiet end for Lady in the Water, the murder of Jan Roseboro. Within days of Jan’s death, investigators decided that Michael Roseboro had beaten and strangled his wife before tossing her into the pool to drown. All of this happened while their three small children slept inside the home. Michael’s family and lover didn’t believe that Michael could do such a thing, but Jan’s family had no doubts that Michael had killed Jan in order to be with his mistress and keep his wealth.
