Microsoft Moves to Acquire Activision | Triangle Squared Ep. 245 Jan 24, 2022

Show notes

Not even 2 years ago, Microsoft made waves in the gaming industry by revealing they were acquiring Zenimax, becoming the first time a large scale publisher had been purchased by a hardware manufacturer in the gaming industry for an earth shattering 7.5 billion. Now, Microsoft is making bigger waves with the announcement of acquiring Activision/Blizzard for a much larger and unprecedented 68.7 billion. What does this mean for the games industry? Can Sony respond, or do they even need to? What constitutes a monopoly? We discuss our thoughts on all this and more on this week's Triangle Squared: A PlayStation Podcast!

Show notes

2021 brought with it a number of exciting games and a few looks at what next-gen only games could look like in a time of cross-generational games being more prevalent. Despite being a seemingly weaker year than many that have come before it, we share our favorite games we played that released in 2021 and share our reasons why we believe they are special! Before getting into that though, we look at Sony's push for PSVR2, the seemingly close remake of The Last of Us, Twisted Metal's rumored new game continuing life in a new studio, and the potential of PS3 backwards compatibility alongside PS1/PS2/PSP hitting PS5 alongside the rumored tiered service, codenamed Spartacus. Changing the Conversation Around "Game of the Year" | Triangle Squared Ep. 242 Dec 20, 2021

Show notes

Off the back of The Game Awards, Chris asks a question about the way the industry looks at a year in games, while offering up a way to change the conversation around "Game of the Year" and what that should really mean. We share our thoughts on how we define Game of the Year, chat about asymmetric multiplayer in the wake of Illfonic's leaked Ghostbuster's MP game, look at market saturation for things like Battle Royale's and what keeps company's trying to tap into that market (mostly unsuccessfully), Ubisoft remaking the original Splinter Cell with the Far Cry 6 team, and of course Sony finally bringing swappable faceplates or "Console Covers" after a year of PS5 being on the market. Game Awards Predictions & PS Play Pass Incoming? | Triangle Squared Ep. 240 Dec 06, 2021

Show notes

The Game Awards are around the corner, and while we often criticize their lack of focus on rewards, that does at least mean we often get juicy game reveals, so we share our thoughts on what we predict to see at the show and get into talks of the reported tiered PlayStation subscription service that MIGHT aim to be more of an answer for Game Pass than their current offering, but might also be something entirely different. We talk this, Battlefield going back to focusing on story, Godfall's PS Plus version not being the full game, and more while getting the community's thoughts on Game Pass's impact on Game Design. Will Game Pass Affect Game Design? | Triangle Squared Ep. 239 Nov 29, 2021

Show notes

Since Game Pass started to rise, there have been many who have claimed it will make those games laden with pricey microtransactions. While the game is F2P, Halo: Infinite's MP looks like the fear many had worried about put into action, but is this actually Microsoft showing their changing colors, or the impact of F2P game design coming down on their top franchises. Will games like Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 face such issues, or will Game Pass not affect game design for titles intended to hit it day 1 moving forward. We share our thoughts on this, PlayStation's odd mobile gaming controller patent, the rumored PS Plus games for December including Godfall, a new Marvel MMO in the works at DC Universe Online's developer and more! Call of Duty Troubles? | Triangle Squared Ep. 238 Nov 22, 2021

Show notes

Call of Duty: Vanguard has seen a significant drop in sales from last year's outing, specifically in the UK, but it's easy not farfetched to think that drop is happening in other territories. Is this simply Call of Duty fatigue, better competition from other games this year, or is this indicative of troubles within Activision bleeding in and affecting products and reception to them? We share our thoughts on this, as well as ponder what games might have been snubbed from nomination for Game of the Year at this year's The Game Awards, share our thoughts on WB's worst kept secret in the Free to Play platform fighter "Metaversus", and more!
