The Fluidity of Attachment Styles and the Capacity to create more security Sep 04, 2023
    Show notes

When a child's needs aren't being met by their caregiver, by not being fed or feeling safe, they develop a distorted view of relationships. This attachment schema is the lens through which they examine the behavior of others, impacting their ability to form relationships and lead a healthy, happy life.

In past episodes, hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have talked about connection being one of our survival needs, but an insecure attachment directly challenges this need. Being close to others, feeling vulnerable and connected, can also be very dysregulating to those who learned to survive with unemotional or unreliable caregivers.

So, how can you overcome your learned patterns to create healthy relationships with yourself and others? The answer is nervous system training.

In this episode, Jennifer and Elisabeth will walk you through attachment schema, how the three insecure attachment styles develop and show up as behavioral outputs, and how nervous system regulation has helped them work toward lasting change.

Tune in for all this and more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Attachment style from the NSI perspective

    • How insecure attachment schema affects social development

    • Nervous system regulation as a way to change our patterns

    • The areas of the brain responsible for creating neuro tags

    • How the 3 insecure attachment styles develop and are expressed

    • Misconceptions about avoidant attachment style

    • Disorganized attachment and complex trauma

Our Relationship to Society Impacts Our Relationship To Self Aug 28, 2023
    Show notes

Trauma Rewired has talked a lot about threat, including its neurobiology, what happens in the body when we don't feel safe, and how a history of trauma affects what we perceive as a threat.

In this episode with Victor Jones, a resilience educator and neurosomatic intelligence coach, we dive deeper into threat, focusing on our relationship with others and society as a whole, as well as how trauma impacts our ability to regulate our nervous system. For example, connection is a survival need but feelings of vulnerability and intimacy can be threatening to the nervous system of those with a history of trauma. This inability to connect not only affects the health of an individual, but also the bond and trust within society.

The good news is that neurosomatic intelligence is a powerful tool that can help you settle your nervous system, allow you to connect, and live a life in line with your ethics. As we cover topics like stacked trauma and co-regulation, Victor and hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth all share their personal journeys to feeling safe in their body, and regulating their nervous system when they experience threat — something that's nearly impossible to avoid in our dysregulating world.

Victor advocates for everyone to learn the language of the nervous system, teaching NSI tools to help people in his community in the hopes of driving more compassion in our world.

If you want to get out of survival mode and start helping others around you too, tune in now!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Victor's and Elisabeth's journey to discovering NSI

    • How Victor's childhood affected his relationship with himself and the world

    • The threat and safety of finding connection

    • The consequences of being consistently exposed to threat

    • Nervous system regulation as a means to help yourself and others

    • How Victor is bringing NSI tools into the community

    • How NSI work can help first responders and high-trauma fields

Overcoming Dissociation and Emotional Repression to Create Presence Aug 14, 2023
    Show notes

How do you show up in the world, in relationships, at work? Even just sitting in a sauna. Can you safely say you are fully present in these situations? If you feel you aren't present most of the time, you're not alone. Most people aren't, especially if you've experienced complex trauma. On the bright side, presence can be learned by using the right tools to get you there. Presence is a topic that is near and dear to our hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth's hearts, precisely because of how they both struggled to be present after experiencing trauma, but also the gift presence provided them in all aspects of life once re-learned. In today's episode, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss how not being present, repressing emotions and dissociation can lead to health issues and deteriorate relationships. While offering the tools required to become present to live a fulfilling and healthy life with secure attachment styles in relationships.

This episode dives deep into the science behind presence as well as what happens when you are in your body for the first time in a long time and how using the tools provided in the NSI training can help. Understanding how your brain operates when it is fully present and how it affects your body, while having tools to help you get there, can literally put years back on to your life.

Tune in for this and more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • How Jennifer and Elisabeth define presence

    • Why presence is important for healing complex traumas

    • Empowerment that comes from presence

    • How presence is a time expander

    • What is a trigger?

    • How intentional training can lead to presence

    • The time it takes to cultivate full presence in the body

    • The struggle behind showing up in the world differently

    • Health implications behind repressed emotion and not being present

    • One big reason to start being present: a study on telomeres

    • Why it is important to work with your interoceptive system

Continuity of Parts Aug 07, 2023
    Show notes

Following our episode on embodiment, we're diving into the topics of parts of self, sex and pleasure because without presence, we are cheating ourselves out of healthy relationships and empowered sexual experiences.

Hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have brought back Dr. Joli Hamilton, relationship coach and sex educator, to help them further examine how the relationship with our parts of self impact the way we behave towards ourselves and others.

A disconnection between our parts of self causes dysregulation, a lack of safety and intimacy in relationships, and even projection. But in this episode, you'll learn how to have conversations with your parts of self, how to take ownership of your orgasm, and how NSI practices can help you heal.

We also discuss the concept of multiplicity, how trauma affects our ability to connect with our parts, and if dissociation during sex and sexual fawning changes the rules of consent. Plus, can a cervical orgasm stimulate the vagus nerve?

Listen in as we share the NSI tools that have helped us regulate our nervous system and connect with our body!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Honoring your parts of self by giving them a voice

    • Projection of our disintegrated parts onto others

    • What we've gained from using NSI tools

    • Exploring pleasure and improving intimacy

    • The connection between nervous system regulation and orgasm

Relationships to Cultural Beliefs Jul 17, 2023
    Show notes

Believe it or not, the brain and nervous system process social threat and physical threat the same way, making them equally as harmful to our health. That means that the cultural beliefs that shape our society are causing real trauma and dysregulating our nervous systems.

Today, Jennifer and Elisabeth are talking to Christy Chung, a certified NSI practitioner, advocate and healer, on this episode centered around culture, community, and the nervous system. They discuss how social stressors (such as gender, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, etc.) can cause unsafe relationships with people and society, and the NSI tools that have helped Christy in her racial equity work, as well as on a personal level as a queer, Asian woman.

Christy also sheds light on the impact that long-term social threat, especially racism, has on the health of those affected. Plus, you'll learn a few interesting facts you might not know — like how culture has shaped our anatomy and biased our brains!

This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to find out how they can not only support their own nervous system and stay healthy, but change the harmful system of our society. Tune in now!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Christy's businesses and activist work

    • Unsafe relationships with people, society, and culture

    • Dealing with conflict and repair work with NSI

    • The relationship between social stress and attachment

CPTSD is an Attachment Wound Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

Our last episode introduced the brain as a social organ, and how this topic relates to the neurobiology of relationships. Today, we dive deeper into how the brain develops through social interactions, why social connection is a survival need, and what happens in the body when we experience connection with other people.

Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is joining Jennifer and Elisabeth to discuss the impact of trauma on the brain's functioning, and therefore, our relationships, expression, sense of safety, and overall health. They talk about what happens when you're not primed for connection in childhood, how the brain is wired to be part of the social structure in relationships, what part of the brain guides us toward dysregulation and protective outputs, and lots more.

If any of this sounds confusing, be sure to listen for Matt's definitions of attachment schema and C-PTSD from a neurosomatic perspective, which make it easier to understand how these systems and inputs come together for integration.

You'll also finally learn why complex trauma is an attachment would, and most importantly, that change is possible and how you can get started NOW. Tune in for all this and more!
