    Trail Tales – Thru-Hiking & Backpacking

What’s it like to hike and live in the backcountry for 5 months? Host and thru-hiker & YouTuber Kyle Hates Hiking (Kyle O’Grady), who has completed every last step of the Appalachian Trail, interviews other thru-hikers, peak-baggers, and backpackers who are almost as crazy as him. Is life while thru-hiking really as glamorous as the social media stars make it out to be? Is pooping in the woods really that big of a deal? Find out these answers and more on Trail Tales.

#17 | What Does Hiker Trash Mean? Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and Skateboarding the Florida Trail with Alex Fogt Feb 18, 2019
    Show notes

Alex Fogt had a crazy 2018, thru-hiking not only the Pacific Crest Trail, but the Florida Trail as well. We talk about how this skate-rat brought a board with him on his Florida Trail thru-hike and skated hundreds of the paved miles on the FLT. We also talk about his best and worst experiences on both trails, and attempt to define what the popular term "hiker trash" actually means.

#16 | A Mountain Lion Encounter in Maine, Being a Ridgerunner on the Appalachian Trail, and Hiking Photography with Aaron Ibey Feb 12, 2019
    Show notes

This week I'm joined by Aaron Ibey, who is a professional photographer and thru-hiker, having hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2016. He worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club as a ridgerunner in 2018, and talks all about what that job entails, as well as some tips for taking better hiking photos on your smartphone. He ends the episode by telling an insane story from his 2016 thru-hike, where he encountered a mountain lion in the Hundred Mile Wilderness of Maine. Trail Tales has had plenty of bear stories, but never a mountain lion story!

Go check out Aaron's photography on Instagram (@ibeyprofin) and consider buying one of his prints online at https://aaronibey.pixieset.com/theprintcollection/

#15 | Hiking The 46 Adirondack High Peaks In One Week for Suicide Prevention with Kolby Ziemendorf Feb 04, 2019
    Show notes

On a bit of a departure from normal episodes, trail runner and 46 Climbs co-founder Kolby Ziemendorf joins the program this week! We talk about his attempt to hike all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks in one week to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Turns out, a trouble-some bear may or may not have thrown a wrench into those plans. We also chat about how that hike turned 46 Climbs into a national movement, and some of the nuances between trail running and normal hiking.

Go check out 46Climbs.com, and keep your ears open for information about a Trail Tales 46 Climbs team!

#13 | Do Thru Hikers Get Stung on the Appalachian Trail? Jessica Pu Shares Insight on her AT Experience Jan 21, 2019
    Show notes

Jessica Pu joins Trail Tales! She is the fiance of episode 8's guest, Baker Bokorney, and they both successfully completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in the summer of 2018. Jessica and I jump around to a few different topics related to our thru-hikes; if thru-hikers ever get stung by bees (the answer is yes), which section nearly made Jessica quit, and some advice for couples who wish to attempt a thru-hike together in the future.

    Show notes

Joseph "Sweatlines" Pecoraro completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail this past summer, but that wasn't enough for him. Scott Goldie (trail name Pacman) recently completed an Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and gives an overview of his experience on the ENTIRE trail in episode number 10 of Trail Tales. #9 | Four Failed Attempts at the Adirondack's Northville-Placid Trail, and a Fifth Shot at Success with Tuts from Trekking On Dec 17, 2018
    Show notes

On today's episode I chat with Tuts, a thru-hiker, film-maker, and all-around outdoors man about his fifth, thats right FIFTH shot at thru-hiking the Adirondack's Northville-Placid Trail (spoiler, he crushes it the last time). What makes a relatively short, and nearly completely flat trail so difficult? We cover this and much more in our discussion about Tut's latest film, 'Northville-Placid Trail - If At First'. We also got into why Tut's shares his adventures with the world on Youtube, and even hear the story of how I (as in Kyle) also failed an attempt to thru-hike this infamous trail, due to a very bizarre reason.

#8 | Underwater on the Florida Trail, Thru-Hiking with a Significant Other, and Three Thru-Hikes in One Season with Baker Bokorney Dec 10, 2018
    Show notes

Not only did Baker Bokorney thru-hike the Appalachian Trail this summer, but he also hiked the Florida Trail, and a good chunk of the Arizona Trail. What an animal! We decided to focus most of the chat on the Florida Trail, giving an overview of what exactly the trail is about, as well as Baker's experience walking the length of his home state. We also talked about how Baker hiked the entire AT, over 2000 miles, with his significant other, and how it has changed their relationship!
