Francis Perkins: The Quiet Powerhouse of the Labor Movement Mar 25, 2021
Show notes “So as FDR is approaching her about joining his cabinet, about becoming this cabinet appointee, she has adapted a very specific look, which is sort of no nonsense, black and navy suits, very little makeup...she was very reserved...just very quiet and to the point. But she wrote somebody and basically said that women in politics were accepted if they reminded men of their mothers. So this is what she goes in with the mindset of; that if she is going to take what she accomplished in New York, and get this done on a national scale, this is how she’s going to play the game. And I just think it’s important to note that she is not naive about what it’s like to be a woman in politics at this time, and that she is very calculated in the way she has presented herself." We have reached the end of Women’s History Month and are finishing off with a woman that we have wanted to cover for a long time: Frances Perkins! First female cabinet secretary, champion of the worker, author of Social Security; Perkins did all that and more but gets so little credit for any of it! Join us for some labor history AND some women’s history, along with some discussion of one of the worst industrial disasters in history. Perkins has all that and more! Comments or Questions? The Brilliant and Bombastic Flo Kennedy Mar 18, 2021
    Show notes

"When it came to...rhetorical style, Flo was a down and dirty kinda type...Let’s say the uncomfortable thing, let’s get up into our uncomfortable space, because that’s where we can start to move past, and start getting the real work done. And I think she acted on that in every facet of her life."

March is Women's History Month and our team is diving deep into the lives and legacies of a few incredible women from American History. We continue our exploration of interesting women in history with Florynce Kennedy. Florynce "Flo" Kennedy was a pivotal member of the Women's Liberation and Civil Rights movements in the 20th century and used her work as an activist and advocate to build a better world for women of all backgrounds.

YouThink You Know Pocahontas? Mar 11, 2021
    Show notes

‘Everybody has heard the name, and I feel like there’s an overview where everyone has this shared collective experience of Pocahontas, and as you’re probably not going to be surprised to learn, almost none of that is true.’

March is Women’s History Month! We continue our stories about incredible women in American history by looking at one of our earliest celebrities: Pocahontas! More myth than fact at this point, the real woman behind the story played an important role in early America and the development of the relationship between native Americans and the settling Europeans.

Join The Rebeccas as they discuss, for the first time, another Rebecca. Why does Pocahontas take the Christian name of Rebecca? This and so many other questions are answered in our latest pod.

    Madaline Pollard Mar 05, 2021
    Show notes

"I think she’s really remarkable because she never paints herself as an angel either. She realizes that first of all, that’s never going to work, and second of all, that’s not real."

March is Women's History Month and our team is diving deep into the lives and legacies of a few incredible women from American History. We are kicking off this month with the story of a woman whose name is not well-known but whose experience has been shared by women throughout history. Meet Madeline Pollard, the schoolgirl who brought down a colonel and a congressman.

The Incredible Barbara Jordan Feb 19, 2021
    Show notes

"It’s fascinating how much in a short, relatively short political career, she is so admired, she is so celebrated….she is called a genius, she is called a hero; the salvation of American politics! She was called the best politician of the century, but also she faced incredible criticism from all sides. Which is not surprising because she was a Black woman in politics."

Our Black History Month series continues with an exploration of the life and legacy of legendary Texas politician, Barbara Jordan. She busted every glass ceiling she encountered on her political journey and in a relatively short career, made incredible strides for women of color. Learn about the Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas political traditions, the Watergate impeachment hearings, hidden disease, a secret love, and more.

The First Two Black Senators in US History Feb 11, 2021
Show notes “I got the idea to do this topic specifically on Twitter, someone tweeted about how when Hiram Revels, the very first African American Senator was appointed, because all senators in those days were appointed, he takes his seat and there was a big controversy about whether he should be seated and some segregationist senators literally turned their backs on him on the floor of the United States Senate. And I thought: this is a really interesting story, we should talk about that” February is Black History Month, and Tour Guide Tell All is highlighting important but perhaps lesser known African American heroes this month, all month long. We continue our exploration of African American history with a discussion of the first two Black Senators, Hiram Revels and Blanche Bruce. Both were appointed from Mississippi just after the end of the Civil War and represent both the hope and the tragedy of Reconstruction. Join Rebecca and Becca as they discuss two lesser known heroes who both boldly tried to envision a more equal United States, only to have history turn against them. Comments or Questions?
