The 2016 Year in Review Extravaganza
We don’t really have show notes for this as they would prove to be full of spoilers. So let’s just say that in this very special episode, Jared and Todd talk about mobile gaming in 2016.
We start with some big news stories/trends.
We then create some categories and award some games prestigious titles.
Finally, we each run down our personal Top 5 “Games of 2016” lists.

Editor’s Note: Well this is a sad day indeed. It’s with great sadness that I have to announce that the Jared and Todd era of the ToG is now over. I started this little podcast in September of 2008 right around when the App Store was first announced/hunted. I was regularly blogging about gaming at the time and was insanely hyped with the prospect of gaming on my mobile device. It turns out that gaming on the iPhone was a hit. Billions of apps have been released, and the ToG was a great way for us to help you spend your money wisely.
I had to step down as a co-host a few years ago due to time constraints. Podcasting when you have two kids, a full time job and a network to run is never easy. I offered the hosting gig to Jared and he mentioned that he would check if Todd could co-host. Once they hit their few-episode-in stride the show blossomed. It grew to become better than it had even been. Todd and Jared have been great hosts, talking about all of their gaming love every week or two. I’m super sad to see them stepping down. I don’t know how any one can fill their shoes moving forward.
I wanted to capture this little note here, my sincere thanks to Todd and Jared for what they did. I loved listening to you talk about Mobile Games every week or so. You guys rock! <3 That said, moving forward the future of the ToG is a little unclear. I'm planning on keeping up with the bi-weekly release schedule for some time, hopefully things will become a little more clear as we go. Ideally I would like to find someone who can sit in the host chair moving forward, we'll see how it goes! So thanks again to Jared and Todd for a job well done! Your mobile gaming passion will be missed :(
In this, the last Jared and Todd era ToG recording, we talk a bunch of news from the Apple Keynote. The biggest things are Super Mario Run, Pokemon, and the Lightning headphone jack.
We then talk a few games we did not play.
After that, Todd has a few brief updates on games he talked about last episode:
Riptide GP: Renegade ($2.99. iOS and Android, Vector Unit),
Mr. Robot:1.51exfiltration.ipa ($2.99, iOS & Android, Telltale Games),
Solitairica ($3.99, iOS, Righteous Hammer)
Then we get into the new games we have been playing.
Jared starts things off by introducing a very special guest segment sent to use by Andi in Germany. He reviews Space Marshals 2 and then hands the mic back to us.
Jared:
Space Marshals 2 ($5.99, iOS, Pixelbite) – Jared loved the first game and this one just ups the ante in every way…from graphical polish to a newly improved stealth mechanic. This is one of Jared’s favorite games of the year (and Andi also feels that way) so just go and buy it now. Highly recommended.
Todd:
Disco Dave (Free, iOS & Android, Amused Sloth) – a fun little “endless” game where you control a character who needs to hop from colored square to colored square on a disco dance floor. Fun music, great controls, quick gameplay, lots of unlocks…they all add up to a fun little free to play, twitch mechanic game. Recommended.
Jared:
Age of Booty: Tactics (, Free w/iap, iOS/Android, Certain Affinity) – Jared was playing this strategy game on his phone but then his phone died so he tried to play it on his iPad Mini 2. Unfortunately, it would not load there. But don’t let that detract you…he is absolutely loving the game and has not hit any paywall due to how they handle things…you basically only need to pay for different chapters in the game…so if you are enjoying it, you can pay for more. Highly Recommended.
Todd:
Bounty Stars (Free, iOS & Android, DeNA) – another free to play strategy game, this one has a “Western in Space” feel. It features an upgradable set of crew members that you control as you chase across the solar system pursuing different “bounties”. You have crew vs. enemy battles as well as ship vs. ship battles, both of which are turn-based. Overall, the game is a lot of fun, is fair with its FTP, has a nice sense of style, and features decent depth. Recommended.
Jared:
Head of State ($1.99, iOS, Edward Biden) – the best thing that can be said about this game is that the dev’s last name makes Jared laugh. A game about politics…by a guy with the same last name as the current American Vice President? Hilarious. Unfortunately, the game itself is boring, cynical, and features some very annoying “bubble popping” mechanics. Avoid it like you would avoid a pollster.
Todd:
Lumines Puzzle and Music ($2.99, iOS & Android, Mobcast) – this is a very nice mobile take of the classic Lumines game…first seen on the Sony PSP. It is basically a music, puzzle, action game and it plays very well on mobile. Todd found the lack of controller support surprising but it is not really necessary. It is just something he was used to. The sound, graphics, and controls are all excellent and there is a lot of content to delve into. Mixing things up a bit, Mobcast also released a free version of the game this week. It is called Lumines Puzzle and Music NEO and Todd recommends you start there and grab the paid game if you like what you see. The paid game has “classic” content that the free version does not include. Highly recommended.
Jared:
Sushi Go! ($4.99, iOS, Michael Busheikin) – this is a nice little take on a boardgame “gateway” game. Simple and fast gameplay and a nice sense of style make this a fun little game to have. The thing is…this is the sort of game that really benefits from having multiple people in the same room playing the game, so you might just opt to pay a few more dollars to get the physical game. This is recommended overall but if you have friends and family to play with, opt for the real deal.

We then did a few “brief updates” on games we did try.
Jared tried 3 games:
Primal Legends (Free, iOS & Android, Kobojo) – a fun little match 3 strategy game that Jared initially loved before he hit a massive paywall at around hour 3 or 4. He also found another game this week that was similar and that he liked more…so there is no room in his gaming heart, or on his gaming device, for Primal Legends. You were fun while you lasted, PL, but it is time to go.
Take Cover (Free, iOS/Android, Playdigious) – a Clash Royale-ish strategy game that has a semi-novel cover mechanic. This game has some promise…but not enough to recommend it over the better games out there in this genre. No need to pick this one up.
Dots & Co. (Free, iOS & Android, Playdots, Inc.) – a nice, simple puzzle game with dots that you need to match and a few twists on how that is done. Worth trying.
Todd tried 1 game briefly:
Riptide GP: Renegade ($2.99. iOS and Android, Vector Unit) – if you have played one Riptide game, you have played them all…but this one ups the ante and brings a lot to the table, so it is the best of the bunch from what Todd has seen so far. Jet Ski racing with lovely water effects and a refined UI and controls make for a fun game. More on this next show.
We then launch into the games we have really been playing this week.
Jared:
Saber’s Edge (Free, iOS & Android, Hibernum) – this is the game the supplanted Primal Legend for Jared. It is a more interesting free-to-play strategy matching game and well worth your attention. Recommended.
Todd:
Mr. Robot:1.51exfiltration.ipa ($2.99, iOS & Android, Telltale Games) – this game is akin to Lifeline with a few of the more traditional storytelling/choice elements that Telltale is known for. Essentially, you find a phone and you use the messaging app on the phone to unravel a mystery (even as you get caught up in it). It showed promise before Todd hit a conversation path with Lois Berry that broke the game. It has not worked after 2 patches so he will uninstall and reinstall and try again. Hold off on this one for now. It needs more QC.
Jared:
Hero Generations ($4.99, iOS, Heart Shaped Games) – both Jared and Todd played this one (Todd received a free copy from the Dev and is very, very thankful for that). Jared took the lead and they talked a lot about this very, very intriguing rogue-like meets RPG meets 4x strategy game. There is a lot to love here but a few of the game’s mechanics really start to become bothersome. Combat is almost pointless and essentially becomes a huge time waste. There is literally no strategy to it and it is very random in how it is resolved. Fog of War is a bit oppressive. The learning curve is steep. You really need to invest time to figure things out. But, that said, they both enjoyed what they played. With a few tweaks, this could be a game of the year contender…but it is not there yet. A cautious recommend.
Todd:
Solitairica ($3.99, iOS, Righteous Hammer) – this is an odd mix of a “golf” style version of solitaire coupled with RPG mechanics and rogue-lite elements. It is very intriguing, offers more strategy than meets the eye, is very well polished, and is oddly compelling. Todd is really digging what he has played so far and he recommends you at least check it out. Recommended.
Jared:
Legend of Skyfish ($3.99, iOS, Crescent Moon) – worried by the “low part of the rollercoaster ride” that has been Crescent Moon’s releases of late, Jared approached this game with some trepidation. As it turns out, it quickly became his favorite game of the week. It is a very “Legend of Zelda”-inspired RPG that features smaller levels, some interesting battle and “hook shot” elements, puzzles, and enemies. It is all wrapped up in a very nice looking package and it is well worth picking up if you are looking for this sort of game. Highly recommended.
Todd:
Leap of Fate ($3.99, iOS, Clever-Plays) – Jared played this as well. It is another mixed genre type of game. At its core it is a twin stick shooter, but it adds RPG and rogue-like elements to make each play through something unique. Pretty much every short level you tackle brings you something new and it is fun to explore not just the levels, the world, and the story but also your character build. The skill tree is very unique and offers something different each time. Overall, this game looks great, plays really well, and offers a strong challenge; while also throwing interesting hooks at you all the time. Highly recommended.
Jared:
Agricola: All Creatures Great and Small ($4.99, iOS & Android, Digidiced) – and we wrap things up with…what else???…a board game adaptation. Digidiced knocks another one out of the park and Jared really loves this simple but very strategic take on the worker/placement board game model. He likes this version of the board (and digital) game more than the first Agricola game and he sees tons of upside to this release. Well worth checking out. His one nitpick is that there is a $3 DLC pack that he feels adds a lot to the game and should have been included. But, hey, even at $8, this game is wonderful. Grab it if you are into such things.

In this episode, Jared and Todd chit chat a bit and then deliver some very sad (potentially) news about the podcast…
We then talk upcoming releases and some Pokemon GO news.
After that, we mention a few bigger games we did not play (but that we might have purchased).
And then it is on to the games we are playing…and it is a lot this time. Glory be!
Jared – gave an update on Heroes of Normandie ($9.99, iOS, Slitherine). After playing and reading up on the game for 2 hours, Jared is getting a handle on this excellent WWII strategy game. It has a steep learning curve (remember, he is a veteran of such games) but he is digging it so far and will update us more later. Worth checking out/keeping an eye on.
Todd – Talked briefly about 2 games: Mars: Mars (Free, iOS & Android, Pomelo Games) – this is a very fun and well-made rocket pack control game. Control your character (there are 30 you can unlock) as you launch from landing pad to landing pad on Mars. Very fun and really worth grabbing. Summoners Fantasy (Free, iOS, Ice Simba) – A CCG that offers a much different battle mechanic than most. Too soon to tell on this one and Jared suspects it is cribbing heavily from mini games in FF VIII and Skylanders: Giants. Hmmm…good thing it is free. Try it?
Jared – Talked about 2 games Mobius Final Fantasy (Free, iOS/Android, Square Enix) – It has potential but the story is boring/uninspired, the free to play mechanics are a bit much, and it is just not that good. He recommends that you avoid it and he deleted it from his device right after we recorded. Jurassic GO – Dinosaur Snap Adventure ($3.99,iOS, BebobBee, Inc.) Akin to Pokemon Snap from the Nintendo 64, this game offers a very pleasant/happy gaming experience as you roam through levels and try to take the best photos of the dinosaurs you find there. Family friendly and a good game for everyone…Jared recommends this one.
Todd – Reigns ($2.99, iOS & Android, Devolver Digital) – Todd’s favorite game of the past 2 week, this features a very simple swipe mechanic that allows you, as the King of a country, to make decisions and balance your kingdom. This starts small but adds in bit of story and intrigue as your king dies and a new one takes over. These “reigns” are stand-alone but they also combine with each other making this game very interesting. Highly recommended.
Jared – Severed ($5.99, iOS, Drinkbox Studios) – Take the basic play style of Infinity Blade and add new, fun elements, an odd story, and a totally different look/feel and it all adds up to a potentially superior game. Jared has not finished it yet, but he thinks it is well worth the price of admission. This might be one of his coveted “games of the year”. Grab it today.
Todd – Journey Below ($2.99, iOS, Ravenous Games) – an auto-running, dungeon platformer that has very simple, yet subtle controls. You jump and fight your way across and down dungeon levels trying to reach the end boss. There are lots of upgrades along the way as well as some tough enemies and obstacles. It reminds Todd a bit of Leap Day, but he likes this game more. It might be a bit too tough for his limited skillset; however. Worth looking into for sure.
Jared – Tinker Island (Free, Kongregate, Android/iOS) – a neat little resource management, builder type game, this finds you stranded on an island and it is your goal to build up your community in order to survive. The free to play mechanics seem manageable and this has inserted itself into Jared’s roster of “3 Free To Play games on my iPad” list. Worth checking out.

In this episode, Jared and Todd talk some news and game updates and upcoming games they are excited for.
We then talk about a few bigger games we did not play.
And then the games we are playing.
Jared – Pokemon Go (Free, iOS & Android, Niantic) – Jared is still playing and enjoying the game. He is taking things at his own pace and catches ‘em all whenever he has time.
Jared – Legends of Heropolis (Free, iOS & Android, Kairosoft) – A far cry from the Kairosoft of yore, this game stuffs free to play mechanic after free to play mechanic into a game that is no fun and makes little sense. Jared has warned you: avoid it like the plague.
Todd – Dead Shell (Free on Android, $2.99 on iOS, Herocraft, Ltd.) – This game purports to be a RPG/Roguelike, but it really contains very little of either mechanic. The gameplay is quick and fairly fun but it feels more like Dungelot lite meets a clicker set in the world of Doom. It is worth trying for free on Android but there is not really enough there to recommend it on iOS. Todd thinks it is a 3 star game. Jared does not even think that much of it. It had the potential to be much better, though, and that is a shame.
Jared – Egg, Inc. (Free, iOS & Android, Auxbrain) – Jared is back on the clicker train and he is really enjoying this one. It does some things differently within the genre and it has a ton of charm. Worth checking out if you are craving yet another clicker.
Todd – Guild of Dungeoneering ($3.99, iOS & Android, Gambrinous) – This Boardgame meets roguelike meets card battle mechanic meets story game is something to behold. So much love and care and attention to detail obviously went into it that you owe it to yourself to at least check out some videos of the game. The game itself plays really well and has surprising depth, but it can be a bit too random for its own good. It can also feel a bit unfair or grindy; although just when you get frustrated to the point of quitting, a new little ditty plays in the game and you get a new character and you just have to smile and try that dungeon one more time. Todd highly recommends this. Jared, who played it at a higher price point on PC, is a little less enthusiastic about it; although he still played it for 5 hours.
Jared – Dots and Co. (Free, iOS & Android, Playdots) – the 3rd game in this series, this matching-esque game offers a lot of fun, pretty much no paywall, and a nice, cute style. Jared finds it almost relaxing to play and he recommends grabbing it and trying it for yourself.

In this episode, Jared and Todd push the big, big, big news to the end of the show – just in case you are burned out on it.
We then talk about a few bigger games we did not play.
And then the games we are playing.
Jared – Smash Squad (Free, iOS, WG Cells Limited) – this is a brief update on the game that Jared talked about last episode. He has played a lot of it and really likes it but he has hit a paywall…and it seems pretty steep. So, he still recommends it but he warns that you might only get a week or 2 of gaming from it. Trier beware.
Todd – Micro Machines (Free, iOS, Chillingo) – this little free to play “table top racer” has potential. It has a nice look and feel with decent (if limited – you only steer…no gas or brake) controls, but the whole package reeks of too many free to play mechanics and shenanigans. They add up and get tiresome. Additionally, this is “online only” and versus other players, so match making figures heavily into how well you progress…and the match making has not been the best. There is some enjoyment to be had but Todd feels this game is not for him and could use work overall. He will not stick with it; and that is a bit of a shame. Go play Mini Motor Racing instead.
Todd/Jared – Super Stickman Golf 3 (Free, iOS & Android, Noodlecake) – lost in the buzz of Pokemon Go is the 3rd iteration in the SSG series. This one is more of the same with tweaks and embellishments and added polish. You control a little golfer as you tackle puzzle-like, side view golf courses. The game plays as well, if not better, than the prior 2 and there is a lot to keep you entertained. Free to play is toned down and you really don’t have to pay anything; although giving $2.99 unlocks some features you might like such as downloadable courses. Overall, both Todd and Jared agree…if you like SSG then you will like this a lot. If you don’t, this will do nothing to change your mind. Oh, and the card opening mechanic feels awesome. Highly recommended overall.
Jared – Rising Warriors (Free, iOS, FredBear Games LTD) – this free to play strategy game has you slowing building an army and working your way through tactical battles. Jared is digging it but some of the free to play mechanics, mostly revolving around timers, seem oddly placed and really limit the flow of gameplay. Perhaps those will get tweaked so you might want to check this out but, overall, this is more of a wait and see game at this point.
Todd – Dead Venture ($1.99, iOS & Android, Dogbyte Games) – This is a mission based, voxel graphic, semi-rogue like game where you control an upgradeable vehicle and you get sent on short missions of zombie destruction and item collection. Each time you make a run towards you mission goals, a day goes by. You have a camp that acts as your home base and you get assigned new missions as you complete old ones. You upgrade your vehicle and unlock more vehicles and move to new camps in the Story Mode. You can also play Survival and Time Attack modes. It all adds up to a lot of fun for $2. Highly recommended.
Jared – Pokemon Go (Free, iOS & Android, Niantic) – we are digging the game and the phenomena around it. We talk about it all for the last 15+ minutes of the show; making it easy for you to skip this section if you are burned out on Pokemon Go news. Despite its shallow gameplay and a few design hiccups, this is a very fun and oddly addictive game. We can see why it has captured the world’s attention.

In this episode, Jared and Todd talk about a lot of game updates and industry news and the latest Humble Android/PC Bundle.
We then talk about the games we did not play.
And then the games we are playing.
Jared – Adventure Co. (Free, Foursaken Media, iOS/Android). Jared likes, but does not love, this party-based action game. There is some depth and fun here but it is not quite for him. Same goes for Todd. Worth checking out because there is a good game here for sure, but it might not be for everyone.
Jared – Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (Free, Square Enix, iOS/Android) Jared loved FF Record Keeper so he had high hopes for this one. Sadly they were dashed due to poor free to play mechanics and boring gameplay. This is not a keeper at all. Don’t bother with it and check out last year’s entry instead.
Todd – Neo Turf Masters ($2.99, iOS, dotEMU/SNK) vs. Eagle Fantasy Golf (Free, iOS, Aiming Inc.). 2 golf games on iOS. Neo Turf Masters is an old Neo Geo game and mixes arcade action with a tiny bit of golf sim all wrapped up in a 16 bit look. This game is retro and it shows, but it can still be fun. Worth it if you liked the game back in the day and/or want to (re)visit a classic. Eagle Fantasy Gold is a more modern take on the genre a la Hot Shots Golf. It has some fun elements but it is a bit too “free to play” at times. Nevertheless, it looks decent and plays well and is worth checking out if you are looking for some casual golfing fun with lots of stats and items you can equip and level up.
Jared – Shadowverse (Free, iOS, Cygames) – This CCG is very similar to Heartstone but it adds some twists of its own while also borrowing a few ideas from games like Sol Forge. It is a very solid title and has a nice single player campaign. Worth checking out if you are into the genre or are looking for a Hearthstone replacement. Recommended.
Jared – Smash Squad (Free, iOS, WG Cells Limited) – it looks like Jared has a new entry in his “3 Free to Play Games I am keeping on my device” list. He allows himself 3 Free to Play games at a time on his devices and this is now one of them. It reminds him a bit of Squids with its shuffleboard-esque battle mechanic and its art style/charm. Recommended!
Jared – Teeny Titans ($3.99, Cartoon Network, iOS/Android) – A fun little collect ‘em all squad battler based on the New Teen Titans cartoon. The collecting elements are great fun (sort of like picking out digital Amiibos) and so is the gameplay. Highly recommended for all ages!
Jared – Rodeo Stampede – Sky Zoo Safari (Free, Featherweight Games Pty Limited, iOS/Android) – Jared is really digging this game in the way Todd loved Crossy Road. Lots of challenge to be had. Fun animals to unlock. High scores to be chased. Just a great time overall and the free to play elements are not even noticeable. Highly recommended.

In this episode, Jared and Todd talk about a lot of game updates and industry news.
We then talk about the games we did not play.
And then the games we are playing.
Jared – Star Billions (Free w/IAP $3, James Cockerham/Catch and Release, iOS/Android) – Jared sort of digs this little game. It is similar to Lifeline as it will send you little story bits throughout the day. The issue is that if you want to speed things along, you need to play 1 of 2 inane mini-games. That aside, the writing is solid and the story is fun. The first chapter is free. The next costs $2.99. Recommended.
Todd – Wizard Swipe (Free, iOS & Android, Niceplay Games) – pixel game in which you swipe to shoot spells upwards in order to defend your castle. This one starts off fun and a bit refreshing, but it grows more annoying as you progress. You are basically forced to watch ads to double your much-needed gold and levels get hard in a hurry…forcing you to grind for gold so you can upgrade your tech tree. This has potential, and is fun for the first hour, but after that it will leave you wanting something better honed. Try it but don’t expect too much.
Jared – Dawnbringer (Free, Kiloo, iOS/Android) – Think Infinity Blade meets Open World RPG and you get an idea of what is going on here. Things look great and, initially, all is good in the game…but flaws soon crop up. There are only 3 types of quests. The fighting system is a bit awkward and does not play well. You are basically forced to watch ads if you die. Etc. It all adds up to a game that Jared cannot really recommend. Since it is free, you might want to give it a go…just don’t expect a whole lot and make sure you have a newer device.
Todd – Heroes of Loot 2 ($3.99 on iOS & $4.49 on Android, OrangePixel) – the sequel to their fun action RPG, this sees more of the same only ramped up. It all plays pretty well and it is a very solid action title with rogue-like elements baked in. Todd recommends it but he thinks you might want to wait a week or 2 for the next (promised) update. It will add MFi support and more.
Jared – Star Nomad 2 ($7.99, Anh Huy Phan, iOS) – this game’s PC roots shine through way too much and that gets in the way of its menus and controls. Underneath is a potentially very fun space exploration and trading game, but the cons outweigh the pros; especially at this premium price point. It is another “wait and see” type of game but, as of now, Jared cannot currently recommend it on mobile.
Todd – BlazBlue RR – Real Action Game (Free, iOS & Android, 91 Act) – a level based action game set in the BlazBlue fighting game universe, this one has tons of free to play elements…but they act more as points of confusion than points of pain/annoyance. In fact, the game is surprisingly deep in its controls and move set and it also offers a ton to do each session without the FTP elements blocking your progress. Todd is digging it a lot and it thinks it is worth checking out. It also looks pretty darn amazing.
Jared – Lost Frontier ($2.99, Mika Mobile, iOS/Android) – Jared once again buries the lead and saves the best for last. We saw Warbits a few weeks ago and now we see another turn-based strategy game enter the fray. This one has a Steampunk/Western setting/feel and it does enough different from Warbits (and Advanced Wars before it) to set itself apart. It does a lot right and it just feels good, so if you are into the genre then this is one for you to check out for sure. Highly recommended.

Jared – Tiny Tower (Free, iOS/Android, Nimble Bit) – this game came out 5 years ago but it just got a massive update. Jared is really digging it (yet again) and encourages everyone to at least check it out.
Todd – Adventure League 2D Retro (Free in Beta, Android, AXFN) – this game is in beta but it is a fun little RPG/Strategy/Rogue-like game. The writing is its strong suit and it is worth taking a look at and maybe adding input to the dev about.
Jared – Castles of Mad King Ludwig ($6.99, iOS, Jeremiah Maher) – another excellent board game to mobile translation from the folks that brought you the also-excellent “Suburbia”. Jared is truly loving this game and thinks it belongs on the devices of anyone interested in the genre. Grab it!
Todd – Pixel Cup Soccer 16 ($2.99, iOS, ODT S.A.) – This is not FIFA and it is not trying to be. No, this old school, extremely arcadey take on football/soccer offers a nice look and plenty of high-paced action…but Todd is torn on it. There is not a lot of depth there and every game pretty much feels the same. Things like goalie control, a more zoomed out look of the pitch, improved penalty shot mechanics, etc. would all add to the enjoy-ability of the game. The devs are working on lots of patches so Todd recommends watching this one and grabbing it once its feature set meets your desires. Until then, you might want to also have a look at Active Soccer 2.
Jared – Legendary Team – the action role playing game for epic heroes (Free, Android/iOS, Panteon) – Think free to play Battleheart and you have this game. It is worth checking out if you had your fill of Battleheart but still want to play something similar. Or, maybe, if you don’t want to spend any money on Battleheart at all and are looking for something free to play. It is a good game, but there is a better one out there and that makes this one fall into quite a small niche.
Todd – Skate Party 3 ($1.99, iOS and Android, RatRod) – think Tony Hawk Pro Skater for mobile. This game does a nice job replicating the look and feel of the old THPS games. It plays well. It has large and varied levels with lots of challenges. It has lots of things to unlock. It has a decent control scheme and (somewhat limited) controller support. All in all…it is a skateboarding game and if you are into that sort of thing, this is well worth a look.
Jared – Gem Hunters (Free, iOS, Armor Games Inc.) – a “match 3” game with RPG elements, this game is fairly simple but does get deeper the more your progress. You have stats that can level up. You have gear you can equip and improve. You have “pets” that can lend a hand. And, of course, you have a quest that plays out in “levels” that you need to complete. It is a very solid offering overall if you are into the genre and it is worth taking a look at.

In this episode we catch up a bit, we talk about some game updates, some upcoming games, and some interesting news items that are part of the mobile gaming world.
We then touch upon a few games we did not try before launching into games we did try.
Todd talked briefly about 2 games he tried…Mekorama (Free – pay what you want, iOS, Martin Magni) and Leap Day (Free, iOS, Nitrome). Mekorama is a bit of a mash up of Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker (WiiU) and Monument Valley. It seems fun and both Todd and Jared like it, but it might need better camera control. Worth trying if you like modern puzzle games. Leap Day is a “new level a day” platformer that sees you inside a bit of a tower-esque level. You auto-run left to right and control your jumps up. It can be fun and rewarding but also very frustrating. It all depends on what you like so try it and take things from there.
Jared – Titan Quest ($6.99, iOS, DotEmu) – this classic PC Action RPG (think Diablo II) comes to iOS and it is an extremely faithful and full-fledged port. Everything that was in the PC game is basically in this one and it all looks good and controls nicely on the touch screen. Jared is digging it so far and may talk about it more, but if you have been craving a good ARPG then this should be on your very, very short list.
Todd – Bejeweled Stars (Free, iOS & Android, EA) – Todd has a bit of a soft spot for Bejeweled and he had to try this one. As it turns out, the game takes all of the normal “matching” found in a Bejeweled game and sets it in a world comprised of short levels. There are many challenges to be had and many free to play aspects to dig into (limited lives, items that you create but that take real world time to make, various currencies, etc.). None of this is too onerous; but it takes away from the fun. No more crazy score chases. No more almost losing in the game only to frantically find a match and keep moving forward, no more leaderboards. It is just short levels that are tailored in such a way that you are bound to need special items to complete them. It was fun at first but it eventually wore out its welcome. Grab it if you want to relive a bit of the Bejeweled magic…and then delete it when you get tired of its free to play mechanics.
Jared – GodFinger 2 (Free, iOS, Jiggery Pokery) – More Godfinger more of the time. Jared has not really played enough of this “sim” yet, but he likes what he is playing. It is worth looking at if you enjoyed the first one but the jury is still out on the longevity of the game overall.
Todd – Imbroglio ($3.99, iOS, Michael Brough) – During the course of the podcast, Jared taught Todd that “imbroglio” is an Italian word meaning: an extremely confused, complicated, or embarrassing situation. Todd was embarrassed by his terrible pronunciation of the word, but the “confused and complicated” bit also make a bit of sense in describing the game itself. This is essentially a rogue like where you control 1 of 4 characters on a 4 x 4 tile grid. The twist is the tiles on the grid are actually weapons and they each have a color, an ability, and a power. You make your way around the board trying to collect 1 gem at a time. You have to battle monsters that will fare better against one color weapon or the other, so you need to plan ahead and try to attack from a position (tile) of power. It is actually a deep and rewarding little system and there is a lot more to take in than you might think at first. Overall, this is a very intriguing game and worth the price; especially if you are interested in charismatic rogue-like games.

Hello and welcome to Touch of Gaming #241 recorded for the week of May 9, 2016
In this episode the lads discuss a few game updates that have hit and they also dig into the news…and there is a decent amount of it again this time around.
After that, it is time to discuss the games “we’ve been playing”.
Jared and Todd – War Tortoise (Free, iOS, Foursaken Media) –Jared took the lead on this review. This game is an interesting twist on a “clicker” crossed with a gallery shooter and it all comes together so nicely. There is a great deal of fun to be had as you command your stationary “war tortoise”, and your support units, in battle against wave after wave of mean-spirited animals and bugs. The game looks great, plays great, and has more depth to it than one might guess. Overall, both Jared and Todd highly recommend this game. Check it out!
Todd – Joan Mad Run (Free, iOS, Happymagenta) – This long-time-in-the-making, endless runner is a lot of fun and plays really well overall. The action is intense and there are lots of things you can upgrade and do as you run from left to right avoiding dangers and taking down bad buys. Todd highly recommends it although he is the first to admit that the game gets a bit too hectic for his aging reflexes.
Jared – Tropical Wars (Free, iOS/Android, Game Alliance) – Jared was hoping for something a bit different in this koala-themed strategy game but, as it turned out, it was basically another Clash of Clans game. That’s all well and good but Jared is played out on that style of game and he will be letting this one escape his iPad. It is not a bad game but there are better games out there. Try it if you have not tried Clash of Clans and enjoy the look/theme of this one a bit more.
Jared – Spellbinders (Free, iOS/Android, Kiloo) – another game in a genre that is filling up rapidly, Spellbinders is basically a MOBA on mobile…and it suffers quite a bit because of that fact. Why? Because Clash Royale came out a month ago and does pretty much everything better than Spellbinders. Jared recommends Clash Royale over Spellbinders. Take that for what you will (i.e. – trust him and play Clash Royale).
Todd – Inks. ($1.99, iOS, State of Play) – Another beautiful game from the creators of possibly the best looking iOS game ever…Lumino City…hit this week. It takes the mechanics of pinball, blends it with a very minimal look of simple pinball tables with a watercolor splashing paint effect, and wraps it all in a puzzle game. The idea is to use as few shots as possible to hit all of the color spots on the table so you can then progress to the next level. You get 72 levels for $1.99 and there are a couple of other level packs available. It makes a neat little puzzle game with some decent pinball mechanics and it is worth checking out for sure. Just don’t expect any sort of full-blown pinball game here. It is chiefly a puzzle game and the levels can be extremely quick once you master the way to clear them.
Jared – Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (Free, iOS/Android, Obsidian Entertainment) – Jared has been playing this game for a few weeks and he is really enjoying it. It is basically a simplified version of the Pathfinder tabletop RPG that plays out with a deck mechanic. There is a lot of meat to this game and a lot going on overall, so the learning curve is steep, but it is worth the effort if you like fantasy RPGs (particularly of the table top variety). There is a Season One purchase for $25 and Jared might buy it and let us know how it all plays out. Stayed tuned.

Hi everyone.
In this episode we talk about some recent or soon to be arriving updates and games.
We then divert to talk about Todd’s issues with Game Center … namely; he cannot open the app anymore.
After a bit of other random chit chat (our Miitomo debate continues), we get into new games:
Todd – Yakin’ ($.99, iOS & Android, Two Fish One Chips) – This harkens back to the good ole days of “Summer Games”. It is an 8 bit (ish) take on kayaking with smooth controls and lots of challenge. Getting 3 stars on all of the levels is tough but there is a lot of fun to be had along the way. Recommended.
Jared – Core Worlds Digital ($5.99, iOS, Broken Myth Studios) – another board game to digital translation, this game unfortunately falls short in pretty much all categories. From poor AI to lots of little glitches to a boring and not very helpful tutorial, this game just does not cut it. Avoid it.
Todd – Kerohiro the Flag Bearer (Free, iOS and Android, Chan Chee Lek) – With froggy characters, goofy little RPG quests, and a “snake” like battle mechanic/play style, Todd had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it all falls flat. The levels are slow, the energy system gets in the way, and the controls just don’t quite work. This one is not ready for prime time. It is free so you can try it for yourself but Todd is deleting the app.
Jared – Spellspire (Free, iOS, 10Ton Ltd.) – if you are itching for another word game mixed with an RPG, then this game is for you. It features a very fair free to play mechanic and a decent amount of challenge and fun. It can get a bit tough in points (boss stages; mostly) but it is a well put together game that is well worth a try. Recommended.
Todd – Astro Attack (Free, iOS, James Bowling) – think space invaders meets Galaga meets schmup…all tied together with a more than fair Crossy Road free to play mechanic. This game is good, endless runner (shooter) fun that has been keeping Todd entertained for a couple of weeks. It cries out for “just one more run”. A very solid title that could be improved a bit with in-game music and sound effects that change based on the skin/theme you are playing with at the time. Recommended.
Jared – Warbits ($2.99, iOS, Risky Lab, LLC) – we bury the lead once again and talk about the best game of the last 2 weeks at the end of the show rather than at the beginning. This turn based strategy game is HEAVILY inspired by the classic Advanced Wars series. This one offers a ton of polished gameplay with a decent; albeit short, single player campaign and an incredibly well done asynchronous multiplayer piece. Jared it really, really loving this and this game will be in his Top 10 of the year. Highly recommended.

This is quite a long episode featuring quite a bit of info.
As usual, we start with lots of upcoming games and news talk and part of that involves a Miitomo battle royale.
We then move into games we didn’t play (spoilers…but it turns out one of us did…)
Finally we get to the meat of the podcast and focus on the many games we did play…
Jared: Motorsports Manager (Free on iOS & $.99 on Android, Christian West) – This game went free on iOS (and is $.99 on Android) so Jared grabbed it and started it and got sucked into a 2+ hour gaming session. Todd enjoys it too and you should check it out. A great blend of F1 style management sim with some top down racing elements all done with nice graphical flair. Recommended!
Jared: Disney Crossy Road (Free, iOS & Android, Disney/Hipster Whale) – Jared strikes again with his take on this Crossy Road spin-off/sequel. This time Disney characters are the focus. The gameplay is essentially the same as Crossy Road but with Disney characters and themes. There is a lot to love here and the different themes actually change up gameplay so they are worth checking out. If you are not completely tired of Crossy Road then check this one out.
Todd: Hammer Bomb (Free, iOS & Android, Crescent Moon) – This is a first person perspective dungeon crawler meets rogue-like meets a tiny bit of the feel of an endless runner. There is a ton to enjoy here from the music to the Voxel look to the responsiveness of the controls. There is character leveling and things to unlock/upgrade and the game is really fun overall. Worth checking out for sure.
Jared: Lost Portal ($2.99, iOS, Michael Camilli) – This is a very well done CCG that might need a bit more incubation to reach its full potential. Nevertheless, if you are looking for another game in the style of Magic the Gathering, this is one to look out for. Jared gives it a cautious recommendation and you might want to wait for an update because it does have a few kinks to work out. It shows a lot of promise; though.
Todd: Good Knight Story (Free, iOS, Turbo Chili) – a “draw a line to match pieces” style of Match 3 game, this offers monsters to battle, 6 different game pieces to use (4 represent elements, one for life, and one for shields), and some quests to complete. There is money to be earned, levels to be gained via XP, weapons and spells to be acquired, and upgrades to be applied. All in all, this is a very solid offering with charm, good looks, and very solid gameplay. Highly recommended.
Jared: Flail Rider (Free, iOS & Android, BulkyPix) – a retro looking endless runner, in this one you drive a car around a level populate with various structures. The car has a large “flail” (ball and chain) attached to the back of it. You need to avoid the structures with your car while letting the flail hit them. The problems lie in the randomness of the levels and the fact that very often you cannot avoid what you are trying to avoid because it essentially pops up out of nowhere. Jared did not like and neither did Todd. Steer clear.
Todd: Looty Dungeon (Free, iOS, Taco Illuminati) – This has a Crossy Road look, control mechanic, and monetization scheme, but it offers some nice differences like room-based levels, different characters with different abilities, attack and defense mechanics, quests to complete, traps, bosses, and more. It all seems promising but Todd had an extremely difficult time getting it to run properly…so he does not have enough time with the game to fully recommend it. Probably worth checking out but your mileage may vary.
Jared: Kingdom Hearts Unchained X (Chi) (Free, iOS & Android, Square Enix) – another free to play Square Enix game, this one looks to dethrone FF: Record Keeper as Jared’s go to free to play RPG game. He is digging it quite a bit so far and likes the look, feel, and gameplay mechanics of the game. He recommends you try it out and he will update us next time about how the free to play aspects of the game are going.

Touch of Gaming #238. For the week of March 28, 2016
We talk about a few updates.
We talk about a lot of news…it was a good couple of weeks for news.
We talk about a few games we did not play.
We then get right down to games we did play:
Jared: Dictator 2: Evolution ($1.99, iOS and Android, Tigrido) – Jared spoke about this game although Todd tried it as well. It is a sequel to a well-regarded game and it features card battling elements, clicker elements, and resource management elements. It has some style to it but, overall, the elements just don’t work well – either on their own or combined as a whole. Both Jared and Todd say you should just “pass” on this game.
Todd: King Rabbit ($.99, iOS, Rare Sloth) – This is the sequel to 2015’s acclaimed game “Furdemption”. It is essentially a puzzle game with some light platforming elements. It has a nice look and feel and a decent ramp up in difficulty. Altogether, it makes for a very nice little package at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
Jared: Planar Conquest ($12.99, iOS and just released on Android, Wastelands Interactive) – This is a true, hardcore 4X game on mobile. There is a ton to enjoy and do in this game, the problem Jared had with it is that finding those things can be a challenge…there is a very steep learning curve. Coupled with the relatively steep price, this game comes recommended but with caveats. If you are willing to invest time and money, you can find something rewarding here. A cautious recommendation.
Todd: 7 Mages (Free to try, $6.99 for full unlock, iOS & Android, Napoleon Games) – This fantasy themed, 1st person perspective dungeon crawler teems with style and content. It reminds Todd a bit of The Legend of Grimrock coupled with The Quest. You control 1 mage (at first) and you move about dungeons solving puzzles and battling monsters. You eventually add more mages to the party, more to more varied locals, and you also add the element of “music”; which augments the characters/battles. It is a cool system overall and the free to try, pay to unlock the game is very fair. Give it a shot.
Jared: Love You to Bits ($3.99, iOS, Alike Studio) – Jared does not really enjoy point and click adventures. This one; however, suits him just fine. It is a very fun and “pleasant” game with plenty of interesting puzzle and just an overall feeling of “nice” about it. Some of the puzzle reach Rube Goldberg levels of cause and effect and that can be really rewarding. This one comes very highly recommended.

ToG #237 for the Week of March 14, 2016
Jared: Clash Royale (Free, iOS & Android, Supercell) – Jared went in ready to really dislike this new game from Clash of Clans creators Supercell. Instead he found an extremely fair, easy to get into, and novel take on the MOBA genre. There are a lot of things to love about this game and a lot of things it does right, so you should go yourself a favor and check it out. Recommended!
Todd: Adventure to Fate: Quest to the Future ($2.99, iOS, Touchmint) – This is the 3rd game in the Adventure to Fate “series”. This one focuses on character progression through dungeon exploration and lots and lots of strategic little battles. The game can feel grindy and there is pretty much no story line here, but it can also be a nice little addition to the JRPG genre. It all depends what you are looking for. If you enjoy loot, leveling up, crafting and lots of battles, then this might be something for you. If you enjoy stat progression that you control (min/max-ing) and deep stories with lots of territories to explore, this game will leave you wanting. A cautious recommendation.
Jared: Fishing Break (Free, iOS & Android, Roofdog Games) – The latest game from Pocket Mines’ creator Roofdog Games, this game has you fishing. There is a lot to do here but it all feels a bit forced and not so lovingly crafted as their prior games. The free to play elements are also a bit steep and it does not always feel fair. This one will not be staying on Jared’s device.
Todd: Ice-Bound Concordance (app)/Compendium (physical book) (Free & $25.00, iOS app & Book, Aaron Reed and Jacob Garbe) – this is something completely different. The app is a game where you help a “simulacrum” (i.e. – a digital representation) of a dead author try to finish off a novel he was working on but never finished. That novel is called “Ice-Bound”. As you delve deeper into piecing together the story, a mystery about the author begins to appear. You are then asked to add in an actual physical book to the mix and use it, and augmented reality, to uncover even more things. It is extremely compelling and a totally different experience on mobile. It is interesting and has a ton of replay value. Even with the steep price tag, Todd recommends this game/book. At the very least, try out the app to get a feel for things. You cannot complete the game without the book but it will give you a bit of an idea of things to come.
Jared: Glass Road ($4.99 on iOS, $4.54 on Android, Smart and Smarty) – Jared is bound by ToG Contract to discuss all board game to mobile adaptations. As such, he took this game for a spin. The board game is one of his top 20% of games but this adaptation is a bit lacking. It looks nice enough and it plays well enough but the tutorial is not good and the app does not always really tell you why things are happening the way they are. If you already know and enjoy the game, this will make a nice addition to your library. If you have never played, you might want to keep an eye on this to see how the update it/tweak it.
Todd: Legacy Quest (Free, iOS, Nexon) – Todd just started this free-to-play Action RPG. You start with 3 characters and you can pick any one of them to battle through dungeons while defeating monstors and getting loot. There are a ton of things to unlock and upgrade and that makes it feel a bit grindy and tiresome. The gameplay is good and the action is frantic, but it will take more time for the ToG crew to reach a verdict on this one. For now; go ahead and try it out if you are interested in ARPG/loot games.

This is ToG #236. Recorded for the week of Feb. 29, 2014. Happy Leap Day!
In this episode we announce some big news regarding the format of the podcast and how it is going to evolve moving forward. We then talk game updates, news, and mention a few of the bigger game releases that we did not try this week.
Finally we go into the games we played:
Todd: Snowboarding – The Fourth Phase (Free, iOS & Android, Red Bull) – This is a very serviceable snowboarding games that focuses on short levels and uses a nice cel-shading style to represent the sport. It has decent free to play mechanics and provides a few hours of nice gameplay…but there is little incentive to keep pushing on as the game is pretty much a one trick pony and it eventually gets stale. Worth checking out, though.
Jared: iSlash Heroes (Free, iOS & Android, Duello) – This is a throwback to the gameplay style of the classic game Qix. Use swipes to cut off parts of the play field while avoiding and isolating the enemies. Jared really enjoyed it for what it is and he recommends you check it out.
Todd (and Jared): I Keep Having This Dream ($1.99, iOS, FireFlame Games) – the last game from Dungeon Raid dev, this one has you sort of creating your own path through a dungeon as you place various tiles in an effort to progress to the exit. It has some awesome ideas but the levels are a bit long, the upgrades a bit few and far between, and the learning curve a bit obtuse…making it not quite the game it should be. Todd likes it more than Jared but this is still probably one to watch first and buy later.
Jared: Super Tribes (Free, iOS, Midjiwan AB) – a surprisingly nice little Civ style game, this one came out of nowhere, offers some nice style and substance, and has an extremely fair free to play model. It is well worth checking out for some quick little “conquer the kingdom/world” gameplay that distills what Civ did very nicely into a mobile friendly game length. Recommend.
Todd: Futurama: Game of Drones (Free, iOS & Android, Wooga) – This is a Match 4 game that offers a ton of levels, decent free to play mechanics, a nice look, and an under-utilized Futurama License. Oh…the characters and locations are all there, but they are not fleshed out at all and things just fall flat on that side of the equation. If you are a fan of the show, this will leave you wanting and it probably won’t be your cup of tea. If you like the Match 3 genre, this is a game worth grabbing.
Jared: Patchwork The Game ($2.99, iOS & Android, Digidiced) – A very nice adaptation of a fun little board game focusing on quilting (sort of). This is how to convert a physical game to mobile and Jared has really been enjoying it so far. Grab it and challenge him to a game!

In this quick and efficient episode, Todd and Jared talk gaming news, some updates to games, “out now on Android”, and a bunch of news.
We then touch upon a couple of the bigger games we did not try this week.
Then we get into the games we did play…
Todd – Fantasy Mage ($2.99, iOS, Illogical Games) – this game might look a bit like iOS classic Solomon’s Keep, but it does not play that way. The controls are not great, the graphics stutter, the menus are a bit obtuse and plain, and the overall feel of the game is “not quite ready for prime time”. There are elements of the game that could be good, but they need a lot of work if they ever want to get there. Hold off on grabbing this one…it is not recommended.
Jared: Forbidden Desert ($6.99, iOS, Button Mash Games Inc.) – Jared enjoyed this take on one of his favorite board games, but he found it to be a bit too “by the books”. It does not leverage what the iPad can add to the adaptation of the board game and it becomes more like the exact visualization of the board game put onto digital form. That is not a bad thing, but it could have been better. The game itself is great and it plays out just fine here, but it is a bit of a toss-up as to which version to get…physical or digital.
Todd – Tennis Champs Returns (Free, iOS, Uprising Games) – This is an iOS port of a classic Amiga game from 20+ years ago. It starts you off with a quick character creation and then walks you through some tutorials. Almost immediately you can feel the subtle greatness of this game, and especially its controls. They are nuanced and offer finesse that you would not expect from touch controls. And the tennis matches are very fun because of it. There is a learning curve here but it is approachable and everything just gels nicely. Todd highly recommends you check this out. It is certainly the best tennis game on mobile and one of the best sports games too.
Jared – Momoka ($6.99, iOS, Felwig Games) – Jared liked, but did not love, this platformer. There are nice things going on here and the look/feel of the game is wonderful, but it suffers from a very poor map and that makes poking around the world needlessly tedious. At $6.99, this is a wait and see type of game. Patches could make this great or a price reduction could make it feel like a better value. Hold off for now.
Todd – The Swords ($2.99, iOS, Lee-Kuo Chen – A Ride Into the Mountains) – this niche game has a classical calligraphy look and a zen like feel as the player uses various swipes to control the brush-stroke “sword” in the game. It plays a bit akin to Fruit Ninja, but it is more varied in what you need to do in each level and you receive no “score”…the goal is to simply finish each stage successfully and to move on in the story. It is very atmospheric and it plays well, but it is short and some of the levels can be a bit frustrating. Todd thinks it is worth checking out, though, and it could be worth a purchase if you like what you see.

This was a big week with a lot to talk about.
First we talk about some upcoming games, some game updates, and some swell iOS games that are now out on Android.
Then we talk about a few big games we did not try this week (hint: RPGs)
Then we talk about some new games.
Jared – Kung Fu Panda Battle of Destiny (Free, iOS, Ludia). Have you heard of Collectible Card Games (CCGs)? Have you heard of Hearthstone? Have you head of Kung Fun Panda? Well, this game is essentially a CCG that “borrows” most of Hearthstone’s format/play style and puts it in a wrapper of the Kung Fu Panda IP. And, you know what…it actually works. Jared enjoyed the game and recommends it to anyone interested in the genre/IP…especially kids. Try it and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Todd: _Prism ($2.99. iOS, Clint Slu) – this is an atmospheric (like what I did that…”sphere”…) puzzle game that focuses on great touch mechanics, a nice futuristic graphical style, fun puzzles, and an interesting Zen-like sense of exploration. Todd is really digging the game and he enjoys that fact that it is challenging but it does not break his brain. Recommended.
Jared – Star Chindy ($2.99 on iOS, $3.34 Android, MASTGames) – This Sci-fi tactile game mixes FTL like space battles with XCOM like top-down turn based strategy elements. And while it is not as good as either of those games, it does actually play pretty well. There are a few kinks (I am looking at you, “reload” mechanic), but the game has a lot of potential. Jared recommends you do a bit more digging into this one to see how it might fare for you.
Todd – Shadow Blade: Reload ($4.99, iOS & Android, Crescent Moon Games) – Todd played and enjoyed, for the most part, this side scrolling platformer. The game plays and looks great, but there are a few quirks with things like MFI support (a bit wonky), controller overlays (not moveable), and some levels that require trial by dying in order to find the right path through. Todd also revisited the first game and enjoyed that…perhaps even a bit more. For now, he recommends holding off on this one to see if the release an update to tweak the issues and improve the game. If you like what you see, the first one is well worth revisiting.
Jared – Harvest Moon Seeds of Memory ($9.99, iOS, Natsume Inc.) – the cute farming simulator meets character interaction game finally makes its way to mobile…and it does so with a nice looking and fully fleshed out release. Not free to play in any way, this is a full Harvest Moon game. If you have never played one before, Jared gives a nice little run-down and this might be a title for you. If you have played one before, this one does not offer a whole lot that is new. Worth checking out but your overall mileage may vary.
Todd – Tomb of the Mask – Endless Arcade (Free, iOS, Happymagenta) – old school graphics with frantic swipe controlled gameplay help push this level-based endless runner into the forefront of games this week. It has great gameplay and really tempts you with that one more run feel. There are upgrades and continues and level ups…which all add to the hooks. Overall, this is certainly one to try and see where it takes you.
Jared – The Greedy Cave ($.99, iOS, AvalonGames) – This game looks a lot like Don’t Starve but it plays a lot (and we mean A LOT) like Enchanted Cave 2. It is a dungeon delving rogue-like with enough hooks to keep you coming back for me. Todd loved Enchanted Cave 2 so he might check this one out. Jared did not play EC2, but he really likes this one a lot. Recommended for rogue-like fans out there.
It is that time of the ToG month…game of the month for January.
Todd’s pick was Dungelot: Shattered Lands ($3.99, iOS, Red Winter). Fun game. Good times.
Jared’s pick was….you guessed it….Crashlands (act surprised): ($4.99, iOS & Android, Butterscotch Shenanigans)
After our game of the month talks, go into a fair bit of gaming news and game updates. Lots going on this week with those things.
We then slide into our mentions of a few of the “bigger” games that we did not play this week.
And then it is new game time…and we cover all the bases this week.
Jared starts off with some board game to digital game goodness in the form of Tsuro ($3.99, iOS, Thunderbox Entertainment). The board game version is a favorite in his household and the digital game looks to follow suit. Well designed. Well implemented. Just plain ole’ fun. It actually adds some “house/advanced” rules to the gameplay and is the better for it. Highly recommended.
Todd starts out with Splash Cars (Free, iOS & Android, Craneballs) – this is a very enjoyable little game. Micro Machines meets Splatoon…drive your car around and “paint” the grayscale world as you go. Todd digs the gameplay and the challenge but is a bit down on the energy system (batteries) that remains even if you play to get rid of ads. Overall it is recommended. Try it.
Jared Avengers Academy (Free, iOS and Android, TinyCo, Inc.) – Thinks Simpsons tapped out in the Marvel Universe and you begin to get the picture…only what you picture is probably a lot more fun than what this steaming pile of gaming turd ends up being. This game is simply not good and not fun. Avoid it.
Todd – All is Lost (Free, iOS, Foursaken Media). This is a very cool, very atmospheric, and very challenging level based endless runner. Guide your crew members, one at a time, through your failing space station and get them to safety. Swipe controls work well and things get hectic in a hurry…so be prepared. Well worth trying out and this is a nice shot of “different” in the endless runner genre. Oh, and the free to play is minimal and you can buy your way out of ads for $.99. Definitely recommended.
Jared Blacksmith Lab (Free, iOS and Android, GamesButler) – this is an interesting little clicker meets light economic sim (think of selling turnips in Animal Crossing and you get the idea). It looks and plays just fine and is good for a little mindless fun now and then. It is worth a try for sure; although Jared is not sure how much longer he will be playing it as so many other games are clamoring for his attention currently.
Todd Space Grunts ($3.99, iOS & Android, Orange Pixel) – Todd thought this would be a turn-based/action RPG (ish) game but it turned out to be more of a rogue-like with some RPG elements. Overall, it is a nice little game and has some fun elements (like ranged attacks), but there are a few quirks currently holding it back. One is the D Pad…it is just way too huge and a bit ungainly. There is also the graphical style of the game…which is a bit too “Orange Pixel” (aka – muddy) for its own good. Todd recommends keeping this one on your watch list and seeing what they do to support/update it. Not bad but could be a bit better. Jared likes it a bit more than Todd but still recommends a wait and see attitude.
Jared’s last game was Ninja Boy Adventures ($1.99, iOS, The Clash Soft). This game is essentially classic Bomberman for iOS…and that is a good thing. Fun, puzzle gameplay coupled with nice, clean graphics and great MFI support make this game a lot of fun. If you are craving some old school Bomberman action, then this is for you. Check it out!

Jared has faded a bit on Pirate Power and that game’s Free to Play mechanics have caught up with him; causing him to be a lot less glowing in his thoughts on the game. Proceed with it at your own risk.
We then talked about new games we played.
Todd talked about 4 games…none of which was truly terrible but none of which really did anything new or had interesting hooks. Hence…they were not really worth grabbing.
Jared played Cartoon Wars 3 (Gamevil, Free, iOS and Android). He was hoping for more than this game delivered and he was underwhelmed by much of it; chiefly its Free to Play mechanics. Not recommended.
Jared and Todd both played Baseball Highlights 2045 ($5.99, iOS and Android, Peter Kossits). This is a very interesting and surprisingly deep strategy board/card game. It has a lot to offer and could prove a worthy addition to ones gaming library. It was truly a bit of a surprise and it has a ton of potential, but it does need to add a bit to the gameplay mechanics and the overall depth of the game (things like online multiplayer and some card expansions would go a long way). Definitely worth checking out.
And that is about that. It was a bit of a light week on the app stores this week so we did not review a ton of games.

In this episode you will hear Todd talk about the snowstorm that wasn’t and about upcoming plans to see Star Wars.
That leads Jared into a most excellent and heartwarming story about one of the prequel movies…not something you hear about very often for sure with those movies!
We then talk a small bit of news and quite a bit about the games we did not play this week…even if we did happen to buy them (we are all looking at you; Jared)
Finally, it is time for new games…
Todd played Baum ($1.99, iOS & Android, A Fox Wot). This is a very pretty and somewhat interesting platformer where you use touch to move a drop of water through various levels. The game looks and sounds nice but the controls are not quite there and the fact that you are “flying blind” in a lot of levels does not help things out. This game is OK but not really recommended at this point.
Jared decided not to bury the lead and talked about Crashlands ($4.99, iOS and Android, Butterscotch Shenanigans). Dear listener, grab a nice cup of your favorite beverage, find a cozy place to sit down, and listen to the melodic voice of Bard Jared as he praises this game like almost no other. He really, truly loves this “crafting meets action” game and he recommends it to all of you out there in mobile game land.
Todd then talked about Dungelot: Shattered Lands ($3.99, iOS, Red Winter). This game is a distillation of all of the great gaming ideas that Dungelot 1 started. It is full-on premium (unlike Dungelot 2), irons out many kinks from Dungelot 1, and adds a ton more content and concepts. Basically, if you like Rogue-like games with a fantasy setting, a mine-sweeper vibe, and RPG elements…you should try this. If you loved Dungelot 1 and are craving more; this is for you. If you never played any of them (or only #2…shudder), then this is the one to get. Recommended.
Pirate Power (Free, iOS, Godzilab) – Jared was in on the beta for this one and even though the gold release wiped out all of his data (that is typical…not some sort of bug), he is still enjoying this game. Lots of fun is to be had here. The “free to play” mechanics are not too intrusive. In short, this is Jared’s current “free to play” game of choice and he will keep playing it. Give it a shot as well.

Then we went into games. Todd tried 6 games this week and insta-deleted 5 of them…so he does not have a lot to talk about. Jared has a few more; thankfully.
Jared:
Pixel Starships (Free, iOS, Savy Soda) – Jared picked up this game hoping for something fun. Instead it got a Clash of Clans meets random, boring pixel art game. He gave it is all but he really cannot recommend this game to anyone. Removed from his device.
Todd:
Grayout ($2.99, iOS, Neven Mrgan) – Todd sort of enjoyed this interesting take on an interactive novel meets mystery story meets word game. However, the game often fell more towards the “random guessing” side of things than the “logically figure out the puzzle” side of things; which leads to frustration and too much randomness. He cannot fully recommend it but it is worth checking out more if the idea of it intrigues you.
Jared:
Battlehand (Free, iOS and Android, Kongregate) – a CCG with many free to play elements (literally and figuratively). Jared needs more time with this one before he can give a recommendation. Todd tried it, found nothing really new to what it was doing, and deleted it right away…but that could be due to his own burnout on the genre more than anything else.
Clocks (Free, iOS, Noodlecake) – a fun little score chase/puzzle type of game that Jared is having a lot of fun with. Well worth trying out…which is exactly what Todd will do this week since he tried 5 other “quick” type games and did not like any of them at all.
World of Yo Ho (Free…kind of $38.50, iOS and Android, Les Editions Volumiques) – And now for something completely different…this is a free app…but one that is essentially useless unless you buy the $40 (ish) board game that goes with it. Do that and you get a very fun, humorous, and innovative physical/digital game experience. If you are into board games and want to try something different, this is a nice place to start.

Since so many games were released this week the “games we didn’t play” section is quite long.
And then we get into games.
Todd recapped Air Attack 2 and Power Hover from last week. Both are great and worth buying.
Jared then had a little segment called “5 games in 5 minutes…games Jared played while out sick”. In that segment, he talked about: Sneaky Sneaky, Prune, X-Mercs, Puzzle Craft 2, Magic: The Gathering – Puzzle Quest
Todd mentioned a few other games he tried this week…none of which grabbed him (1 of which would not run on his iPad). Into the Dim – he needs to play more. CarRage – not the best Micro Machines type game out there…largely due to the control scheme. Cardinal Pixel – this game would not play. It crashed during the tutorial. It was updated after the episode was recorded. Todd tried it and now it is not compatible with iPad 4 at all and it could not be updated. Weird.
Todd then talked about Rust Bucket (Free, iOS, Nitrome) – this is a rogue like that focuses more on the puzzle elements of the genre than on the upgrades or weapons or spells. In essence, that makes it a purely puzzle experience. It is nice to look out and the audio is solid, but Todd was looking for something more like Tiny Rogue or Arcane Tower and, as such, this one falls short for him. The ads are also a bit much, but there is a very good game here if you are looking for a pure puzzle game with the look and feel of a turn-based rogue like.
Jared: Cut the Rope Magic (Zeptolabs, iOS and Android, Free on Underground or $.99) – a perennial favorite of Jared’s, this installment basically offers more Cut the Rope for anyone interested. The puzzle mechanics are still there in all of their glory and they add in a few new tricks, but this is basically a new installment of the series as opposed to a sequel. If you liked any of the prior games, you will really enjoy this one too. Worth buying for sure (and definitely get it for free on Amazon Underground if you are an Android gamer).
Todd: Dashy Crashy (Free, iOS, Dumpling Design) – another Voxel graphics, lane based runner enters the fray! This one features a variety of cars/trucks you can control as you move lane to lane trying to avoid oncoming traffic. They throw some fun touches into the mix like an over the top narrator and a day/night cycle while also adding a bit to the mechanics in the forms of Ranked levels, speed ups, brakes, and all sorts of unlockable vehicles. The free to play model is very fair and the gameplay is fun. Recommended if you are looking for a new pick up and play type of endless runner. Fun stuff.
Jared: Metro 2033: Wars ($7.99, iOS & Android, Tapstar Interactive Inc.) – Jared grabbed this turn based strategy game that is based on the books/games of the Metro 2033 world. He could not find a lot of info about it but did see some positive Windows Phone reviews, so it went for it…and it turns out to be a very deep and tough turn based strategy game. The focus is on battling it out in Russian subways…trying to gain and hold territory as you build up your small army. The game has lots of nice touches but you need to be careful…perma-death lurks around every corner and any little mistake could be exploited. Despite all of that, the game feels fair and it is very well worth a look. The price is high and might scare some off, but Jared will be back with more info next year if you are still on the fence.

We remind listeners that we will do one more show this year (for the week of Dec. 21) and then we will take 2 weeks off to spend the holidays with friends, family, and our game of the year contenders.
We then talk game we played.
Todd: played a few games with that got Holiday updates: Ski Safari 2, Soda Dungeon, and Landsliders (which also saw its Android release this week). He is enjoying all of these games right now.
Jared: gave a brief update on Desktop Dungeons…a rogue-like that came out this year. He is really digging its almost “puzzle-like” gameplay and he highly recommends it to rogue-like fans who are looking for something with depth and puzzle elements more than action RPG elements.
As for new games…
Todd talked about Air Attack 2 ($1.99, iOS, Art in Games). This WWII themed air battle schmup features truly awe-inspiring graphics, lots of action, and varied missions/ways to play…it all adds up to an excellent take on the bullet-heck schmup genre and Todd recommends this game. A full review is pending, but so far it has been excellent.
Jared played Fantastic Plastic Squad (DropForge Games, iOS, Free). It is a fun little action shoot/FPS game and it offers some fun gameplay elements, but the Free to Play aspects are a bit heavy-handed and the story/characters are a bit on the generic side. Worth a shot but he will be deleting this game soon.
Jared and Todd both played Magic: The Gathering – Puzzle Quest (Free, iOS & Android, D3 Go!) and they found it to be an awesome mash up of the match 3 elements of Puzzle Quest and the deck building/card battling mechanic of Magic: The Gathering. The game is surprisingly deep and offers a lot of strategies and options for the player. The free to play mechanics never truly get in the way; although if you do want premium currency, it is doled out very, very slowly or can be purchased at a fairly high price point. The UI leaves A LOT to be desired, but it detracts little from the game’s enjoyment. Well worth getting if you are interested in the mechanics of either PQ or M:TG. Grab it today!
Todd played Power Hover ($3.99, iOS, Oddrok Oy). This is a very interesting, story based hover board action game. You move along the varied levels using your hover board skills to collect batteries which help you gain power and power up your town/overworld. It looks great and has a lot of interesting levels. The hover board is a bit unwieldly but you do get better at it with time. The checkpoint system is fair and the game is very quick to restart if you die. Games like this sometimes lead Todd to frustration, but this one has the right mix to keep him trying to progress. So far, so good. A full review will come soon but put this one on your radar.
Jared: The Incorruptibles – Knights of the Realm (Free, Maximum Play, iOS). This game starts off as one of the best Real Time Strategy games Jared has ever seen on mobile. It does so much right within that genre. But then it adds in a Clash of Clans-esque town building/defense mechanic and that drags the game right down. Overly aggressive Free to Play mechanics (especially the cool down timers and the Builders) further sully the experience. Overall, Jared loves this game for the RTS elements, but the other mechanics overwhelm the great RTS experience and drag the game down. Try it if you want but he will be uninstalling the app soon.

Then we got into the games we are playing…
Jared: Warhammer 40,000 Deathwatch – this was an update of the game that Jared has been playing, and really enjoying, for weeks now. As it turns out, there is a ton of content here and some very fun mechanics for upgrades, etc., that make for some true fun. Highly recommended.
Todd & Jared: Dominion (Free, iPad and Android, Making Fun, Inc.) – so, this game is something different. It is the very long awaited iOS adaptation of a very popular deck-building board game. Todd was playing it on iPad 4 and it gave him no shortage of troubles. He was never even able to make it fully past the 8 stages of the tutorial. Things like the “End Turn” icon not appearing to the “Play by Play” chat window being stuck in the “open” mode…this game was one bug after another for him. When he could play, he basically enjoyed it, but mostly it was just a mess. For Jared, on the iPad Mini, things were a bit smoother and he was able to play. But he found the mechanics of the game a bit lacking and the Expansion packs to be far, far too expensive. It would cost to the tune of $90 to get all 9 packs. Craziness. Overall, this one is not ready for prime time; although there is potential there. Buyer beware.
Jared: Digfender (Free, iOS and Android, Mugshot Games) – This is a very fun tower defense game with some twists/new mechanics. Jared is really enjoying the look, feel, and gameplay of the game so far. Well worth trying out if you enjoy the tower defense genre and a nice place to start if you are not that familiar with such games. Try it today.
Todd: Rescue the Princess (Free, iOS, MiniJiniStudio). This is an interesting take on the Match 3 style game with a gameplay mechanic similar to a title like Dungeon Raid. In this one, you have a character icon on the map and the location of that icon is the jumping off point for the matches you can make. Slide your finger along any path through 1 type of icon (blue attack, red attack, hearts, or coins) and you do/accrue the corresponding thing. The monster then takes its turn. It has rogue like elements so you collect gems (the premium currency) and when you die you can use the gems to buy permanent upgrades so you can start again from a more powerful place. The free to play aspects are very optional. When you die the first time, you can play a short ad to “revive” and continue. You can also buy gems or a gem doubler to help you on your way. This is a fun game with some nice twists on the typical gameplay style. Try it.
Jared: Shadowrun Returns ($1.99, Harebrained Schemes, iOS and Android) – This one is a little blast from the past. In an effort to free up some space on his iPad, Jared decided to pick a large (size wise) game and play through it so he could delete it. This game, a reboot of a classic PC title based on a pen and paper game system, got the call. It is an strategy RPG and it starts a bit slow, but it picks up and, with time, becomes a pretty decent little title with a nice story and good gameplay. For $1.99 you get a solid 8-10 hours of sci-fi/fantasy SRPG gaming so you might want to give it a go. We hear the sequel is the best in the trilogy (the 3rd game is not out on iOS or Android yet), but this one does hold its own very nicely.
Todd: Rayman Adventures (Free, iOS and Android, Ubisoft) – perhaps the biggest release of the week, this game actually got released a day later than most others on the app store. It is essentially the 3rd in the Rayman series on mobile and Todd tried it on his failing iPad 4. It was not optimal, so he tried it on his phone and had some fun with it. It is essentially a platformer with awesome graphics and sound. The gaming is divided into 3 types of stages (straight platforming, collectathons, and battles) and you proceed along different “adventures” trying to 3 star all of the levels in each adventure. That is all well and good but they thrown in free to play mechanics (creature cool downs, creature acquisitions, elixirs, etc. etc.) that do not add to the gameplay at all. Unlike the other 2 games, in this one you are able to move back and forth in a level (rather than always moving forward) but the swipe controls feel a bit “off” and that can make for a frustrating experience at times. A virtual D pad probably would have worked better. Also, once you finish an Adventure (which is a set of 3+ levels), you move to the next and you can never go back to the ones you finished. So they are essentially forcing you to 3 star each level (if you care about such things) before moving on to the next adventure. Coupled with the FTP mechanics, this can bog things down. Todd found himself not caring about the 3 stars and just trying to move on. It was just too much tedium to do otherwise. Overall, it is still a game worth checking out and it has a lot going for it, but some design and FTP choices make it less fun than the first 2 in the series.

We then delve into the games we grabbed during the big Thanksgiving Holiday sales on the App and Google Play stores.
Then it was time to talk games…and we have quite a few this week.
Jared: Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes (Free, iOS and Android, EA) – Jared played a bunch of this game and while the gameplay is ok and the Star Wars setting is nice, the overall free to play mechanics and muddiness make this game forgettable. There are too many currencies, too many odd upgrades, and too much grinding to fully recommend this game to anyone but the most ardent of Star Wars fan. This one will not be sticking around on Jared’s device. 3 out of 5 overall.
Todd: Ball King (Free, iOS & Android, QWIBOO, LTD.) – challenged to beat a score in this game by a Game Center friend, Todd decided to grab it and try the game. What he found was a very simple “shoot the ball in the floating hoop by using very intuitive touch controls to draw the path of your shot” game. This is a nice high score chase game with decent graphics, great sound effects, great control and extremely fair Free to Play mechanics. Really good fun and worth picking up for sure. On Fire! 5 out of 5.
Jared: Starlit Adventures (Free with unlock, iOS and Android, Rockhead Games). This game, in the vein of Dig Dug, proved to be a lot of fun for both Jared and his 3 year old son. Although probably not completely understandable children of that age, this game can be picked up quickly and easily and makes for a great little “on the couch” time waster. It has good music and a very bright, friendly, and colorful style. Worth trying for sure.
Todd: Snowboard Party 2 ($2.99, iOS, Ratrod). Todd loves snowboarding games in the vein of SSX but has yet to find one that really lives up to that potential on mobile. This one comes close with nice graphics, good controls (including MFI controller support), and an ok soundtrack (but with the ability to play music from your own collection!!). It has 4 modes of play, lots of characters and gear to unlock, plenty of tracks with a decent amount of variety. In short…it has most everything you might want. What it lacks is the cohesion to tie all of those things together. Something is missing and it makes this completely competent game less than the sum of its parts. It is worth grabbing if you like the genre but it could have been better. 4 out of 5 overall.
Jared: Le Havre: Inland Port ($4.99, iOS and Android, Digidiced). Digidiced provides an excellent port from board game to iOS with this release and the only thing that could see improvement on that end is the online mulitiplayer…which they are working on. The game, however, is a bit too “mathy” for Jared’s tastes so he probably won’t keep playing it. Overall, this is an excellent translation of the board game…but you need to like this style of board game to appreciate the iOS version of the game. At $4.99 it is worth grabbing; especially if you have already tried the board game and enjoy its mechanics.
Todd: Traffic Rush 2 (Free, iOS, Donut Games). Hot on the heals of its 2009 prequel, this game looks to up the ante a bit…and it succeeds overall. A voxel based update to a high score chase game, this follows the Crossy Road free to play model…which means you really never see an ad if you don’t want to and you never have to pay any money. The gameplay is very tight and feels a lot like its 2009 rendition. It is fun and gets very frantic…which can be a good or a bad thing overall. Todd feels like he might have already reached his highest score…but he will give it one more try just in case. 4 out of 5 overall.
Jared: Starside Arena (Free, iOS and Android, Epic Owl) – Jared is really, really digging this “build your own starship” arena battle game. In this one, strategically building your starship is the key. When you send it out into battle, the battle plays out automatically and you have no input, so plan well. There are tons of things to enjoy about this game and only 1 real flaw so far…it seems that even if you are winning battles, the game will sometimes “scrap” your ship and tell you you need to rebuild it to do better. You can rebuild it without a problem…but you might not have wanted to. That aside, this is highly recommended and Todd was convinced enough to download it while Jared was talking. Cool.

In this episode, Jared and Todd talk a bit of news. Seeing as though this is a holiday week, the news is a bit light as are the updates/upcoming releases.
We also talk about a slew of good iOS games that have now moved to Android. Chief among them are Call of Champions, Horizon Chase, Skeletomb, and Lifeline 2.
Moving on to games:
Todd: Goat Rider (Free, iOS, Beaver Tap Games). We were fortunate to be given an advance copy of Goat Rider this week. Todd enjoyed the gameplay for what it was…a test of reflexes during a high score chase with lots of, mostly superficial, unlocks. A fun game for a short period of time, Todd feels he probably will not beat his current high score so he will stop playing for now. Worth trying but the fun is fairly short-lived as the game just gets too hard after about the 45 second mark.
Jared: Max Ammo (Free, Mantis Shrimp, iOS and Android) – Jared really enjoyed his time with this cover based shoot. It looks great and plays well and just feels “right” on most counts. It can get a little grindy; although paying a bit of cashola will help with that if you want to go down that path. Recommended.
Todd: Tales of a Viking: Episode 1 ($.99 on iOS, Free on Android, MACE Crystal Studios/Dimitry Sadovnikov), This retro-inspired, Hoplite-esque, turn-based strategy game offers a ton of variety and interesting gameplay mechanics that help it stand out from the pack. It really ramps up what has happened in similar games of yore and it makes for a highly enjoyable, highly interesting little game. Well worth the price of admission if you enjoy turn based strategy rogue like puzzlers…with RPG elements. Grab it.
Jared: Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey ($8.99, Kobojo, iOS) – get ready…this game threw Jared for a complete loop. Never before has he had such a love/hate relationship with a mobile game. Brilliant graphics, great music, a genre-defining combat system, and decent game length battle it out with an extremely misleading app description, odd free to play residue, lack of auto saves (enjoy that phone call…you just lost 20 minutes of progress in the game), and a hit or miss UI. Overall, this one, at this price, needs to be approached with a “wait and see” attitude. The Dev says they are working on improvements and changes. Until then, hold off on purchasing this. With the right adjustments, this could be the best JRPG on iOS…but it is not there yet.
Todd: Super Dangerous Dungeons (Free, iOS, Jussi Simpanen) – A bit Spelunky. I bit just cruel, small scale platforming, this game looks nice, sounds good, and plays pretty well…but Todd could not quite get over the floaty jump and “fall” mechanics and he ended up getting frustrated after 15 or so level…and some Time Trial attempts. Nevertheless, this is free and if you like punishing puzzle platformers, this might be just the game for you…so try it and decide for yourself.
Jared: Brass ($6.99, Cublo, iOS and Android) Another board game gets adapted for mobile and Jared decides to try it out….and he really likes it. This is an “economic”/number crunching sort of game and playing on iOS speeds the gameplay up nicely. He is enjoying his time with it and thinks they did a great job porting it over…and that includes a stellar tutorial which is something that is sadly lacking from so many board game ports. Grab it today and challenge Jared to a game tomorrow.

Todd- had a brief update on: Mavenfall (Free, iOS, Blue Tea Games US) – He enjoyed the Campaign, as did Jared, but found both the Arena and the Deck building lacking…as did Jared. Worth grabbing for the campaign and then seeing if they improve the rest of the game; because it could be a very good game with the right tweaks/improvements.
Jared: Tiny Rogue ($2.99, iOS, Ravenous Games). Jared appreciated the puzzle elements in this rogue like but found the game a bit too simple and a bit flat. There was not much keeping you going on your quest other than a high score chase. Todd did not really enjoy the puzzle elements that much b/c he has played better this year. Overall, this is not a bad game but there are other, better options out there.
Todd: Rogue Saga ($1.99, iOS, Jinwoo Park). A different rogue like that mixes voxels with dungeon exploring, battles, and loot. Todd actually found this to be a lot more fun than Tiny Rogue, but there are some rough edges that need to be smoothed out. He will keep playing it but thinks it is worth the price of entry.
Jared: Wizards and Wagons ($4.99, iOS,Touch Dimensions). Not the Oregon Trail-esque game Jared thought this might be…this one actually resembles a space trader game where you need to move from place to place as you buy low and sell high. There are battle elements and other management pieces in here and so far Jared is really enjoying the game. It might be a bit pricey for what it offers but he will keep playing and report back.
Todd: Amazing Loot Grind (Free, iOS & Android, Michael Astolfi). Todd played this on Android and it is an odd game…that really is not a game. Not quite a clicker in the traditional sense, this game is more of a “yes” or “no” (buy or sell) your loot type of game. No real gameplay is present but there are probably folks out there that will get hooked on this just for the fun of seeing new loot. Todd deleted it but you might want to try it anyway…just in case.

Todd: The Room Three ($4.99, iOS, Fireproof Games) – starting off with a bang, the much-anticipated ‘The Room Three’ released this week. It is getting all sorts of critical praise and Todd falls right in line. A great puzzle game that expands on the prior 2 games in (almost) all the right ways. Totally worth your $5 investment if you like moody, exploratory, puzzle games hat look and play great on touch screen. Grab it!
Jared: Mavenfall (Free, iOS, Blue Tea Games US) – Jared was very pleasantly surprised with this Collectible Card Battler. It combines some elements of Hearthstone with some small elements of Castles and Crusaders for a nice, intro-level strategy card game. The free to play seems fair enough and the mechanics are fun overall. Well worth picking up and trying out. Todd echos those sentiments as he tried it out a bit as well.
Todd – Neon Drive (Free, iOS, Fraoula) – This game looks all 80s neon flash and has a fun soundtrack, but it is only a simple lane-based endless runner/high score chase. The controls are decent but Todd found himself getting frustrated with the timing of the lane moves and the repetitiveness of the levels. Coming off of the recent, excellent Horizon Chase, this game suffers in comparison…but that is mostly in Todd’s brain. Try it but don’t expect too much from it and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Jared: Bigfoot Hunter: A Camera Adventure Game (Free, iOS, R2 Games USA Co., Limited) – This fun Pokemon Snap meets first person (camera) shooter kept Jared entertained while he took photos of woodland creatures in his hunt for the elusive Big Foot. He recommends the game, particularly if you have younger gamers in the house; although the game does get fairly hard in the later levels. Give it a shot…or a photo shoot. Bam.
Todd: Runestone Keeper ($2.99. iOS, Cimu) – Last up with have this dandy little rogue-like RPG in the vein of tile-revealing game Dungelot. There is a lot going on here and it makes for a very strategic and interesting game…one well worth picking up if you are at all into that genre. Highly recommended.
And that does it. In a week that seemingly only had 1 major release, pretty much everything we tried ended up being good to great. We love it when that happens!

Finally we get to the games we did play;
Todd – Lumino City ($4.99, iOS, State of Play Games) – Todd is digging this stunningly beautiful adventure/puzzle game but wishes it had a “free roam” play mode, was a bit less linear, and had a bit more of a story. Nevertheless, there is a lot of puzzling goodness to be had for the price. Grab it if this style of game interests you.
Jared – Templar Battleforce RPG – ($6.99, iOS and Android, Trese Brothers) Fresh off of the heals of Jared’s “game of the month” for October (X-Mercs) comes a similar turn based strategy RPG game…this one focusing a bit more on the RPG side of the equation; however. He is enjoying the game and it is different enough from X-Mercs to keep him interested and to keep him swapping back and forth between the two games. One thing that is not great is the graphical look of the game…although you may beg to differ. A good game overall.
Todd – Slashy Hero (Free, iOS, Kongregate) There is always room in Todd’s life for a fun, action game and this one fits the bill. You use a path drawing mechanic to roam small dungeon levels, defeat hordes of enemies, pick up lots of candy, and gather up some treasures. The Free to Play is not too bad in the game and it is a nice little time waster. Give it a shot.
Jared – Beneath the Lighthouse (Nitrome, Free with $3.99 iAP, iOS) Jared is really loving this puzzle adventure game from Nitrome. Innovative and effective controls add to the gameplay and the full unlock for $3.99 is a nice touch. You have nothing to lose so give this one a shot and buy it if you really like it (or try to grind your way through if you are that good).
Todd – Five Card Quest ($2.99, iOS, Rocketcat) This game is a card battler meets rogue-like although it is missing some elements of both genres that might make it a better game. It features an interesting graphical style, some decent strategy, and relatively quick games. But you cannot build your own deck and certain stats (like how many enemies you have left to battle once you kill one) means this game can feature more guess work than it should. The dev is updating things so keep an eye on it and try it out if you are looking for something a bit different in the genre.
Jared – Sproggiwood (Freehold Games, $4.99, iOS) This one was released months ago and both Todd and Jared picked it up while on sale. Jared played it this past week and he truly, truly loves it. A rouge like that does everything right, this game has sucked him in and it keeps him playing. It might even have a chance of being his Game of the Month for November. If you are late to the party like we were, give this one a shot.

Jared – Blood Bowl: Kerrunch (Cyanide, Android and iOS, Free). Jared tried to enjoy this game but it is too easy and too boring to really recommend. It will not be sticking around on his device.
Todd – Spelldom (Free, iOS, HangZone). A similar story here. Todd wanted to enjoy this game but the free to play mechanics are too strong and the word battling game play is too weak. He will not continue playing this.
Jared – Battlestation: Harbringer (Bugbyte, $3.99, iOS and Android). Jared is loving this turn based strategy meets real time strategy meets rogue like space battle game. He will speak on it more in an later episode (hopefully) but he thinks it is worth a purchase.
Todd – THR:Race (Free, iOS, Thomas Podewils). This game has a visual style that Todd really enjoys…vector graphics a la Omega Race or Asteroids. But the controls are bunk and the game play is unappealing. Unfortunately, this one will not be sticking around.
Jared: X-Mercs- (Free, iOS, Game Insight). A free to play X-Com-a-like. If you dig that sort of turn based strategy goodness, you owe it to yourself to grab this. Great game play and reasonable free to play mechanics make this a must try title.
Todd – Opus: The Day we Found Earth (Free to try, $1.99 up to $5.99 to unlock full game, iOS, Team Signal). Todd really enjoyed this little tale of space exploration via telescope. The gameplay is good, if a bit simplistic and repetitive, but the story that is told and the atmosphere that is created make this a fun little 2 hour experience. Recommended.

Todd talks very, very, very briefly about:
The Balloons (Free, iOS, Noodlecake) – this pixel art, bottom to top score chase game was not for him. Mostly due to the controls and because he is liking other games in this category more.
Jared talks very, very briefly about:
SirVival ( Free, iOS and Android, Soul and Vibe Interactive Inc.) – Jared dislikes the spelling of this game because it messes with his auto-complete, but he really enjoys this stage-based runner. One really cool thing about it is that it is fully voice acted. Not something you see in this genre. It also offers pre-built stages that are fun to navigate and figure out. One to watch.
Jared then talks about board to digital game:
Camel Up ( $4.99, iOS, Outline Development) – not to be confused with Camel Cup, this digital translation of the award winning board game is somewhat lacking. If offers a terrible (essentially non-existent) tutorial, no online multiplayer, and underwhelming style. Plus, the games play way too quickly. Overall, it is just not something worth purchasing at this point. Stick to the real board game if you are interested.
Todd talks about free to play, score chase SCHMUP:
Shooty Skies (Free, iOS, Mighty Games) – From the folks who brought you Crossy Road, you can see its roots in most aspects of this game. It is a fun game but somehow it did not grab Todd, or Jared, in the way some other recent score chase/Crossy Road alikes have. Part of the issue is graphics that get in the way of each other…making the game harder. Another issue is the SCHMUP genre…it does not feel as fun as it could for this model of game. Both Todd and Jared will probably let this one fall by the wayside soon.
Jared wrapped things up with a discussion of:
Storm Casters Ultra (Free, iOS, Get Some Games) – This is an excellent, free-to-play twin stick shooter/dungeon crawl. Unfortunately, if you grabbed the original, this version offers little new content to encourage you to adopt it. If, however, you never played the original then you should grab this ASAP. Fun gameplay, interesting mechanics, great polish, and a very fair free to play model make this a great game.

Land Sliders (Free, iOS, Prettygreat) – This “endless” runner with Crossy Road esque monetization, is really, really fun. You slide the randomly generated world underneath your character as you try to pick up currency and character-specific tokens. There are various enemies and rewards and the levels are varied and interesting. Tons of characters to unlock and so much charm, combined with excellent gameplay, nice graphics, a sense of humor, and a nice little musical score make this an all-around great game. Try it today.
Jared:
Order and Chaos 2 (Free, iOS and Android, Gameloft) – Jared is really loving this MMORGP on mobile and he thinks it is “best in class” for touch screen mobile devices. Todd did download it but did not try it yet. Recommended!
Todd:
Skeletomb (Free, iOS & Android, Punk Labs) – an interesting pixel art endless runner with some twists in visual perspective and game play. It is actually a lot of fun but the “muddy” visual look of some levels can cause pathing issues. Overall this is well worth a look for the different game play style and extremely fair free to play model.
Jared:
Spirit Hunter (Free, iOS, Boomlagoon) – Jared is liking this action RPG quite a bit. It has that same loot/action combo that made Diablo games so great and this game plays pretty well. He needs more time with it but it is worth a free to play shot.
Todd:
Astra ($2.99, iOS, Pablo Molina Garcia) – Todd really loves the look and feel and atmosphere of this endless runner, gravity-based platformer. It has tons of replay-ability but it can be somewhat punishing and Todd wishes it had MFI support. Overall, this is one to watch and worth grabbing if you want something different within the genre.
Jared:
Puzzle and Glory (Free, iOS and Android, Sega) – run, don’t walk, AWAY from this totally generic match 3 game in the vein of Puzzle Quest. It brings nothing new to the table while actively trying to remove the place settings so nicely put forth by its predecessors. Honestly, this one is not worth trying…even at the price of FREE. Blah.

Sky (Free, iOS and Android, Ketchapp). Todd is digging this game for what it is…a high score chase game with a few unlockables and a definite sense of style. Worth a try and it will give you some fun gaming for a few minutes to a few hours
Jared
Call of Champions (Free, iOS, Spacetime Studios) – Jared is really, really enjoying this MOBA on Mobile done right. They streamline everything they can within the MOBA genre and condense the gameplay down to something that is perfect for mobile. 5 minute matches are the crux of this condensation and they make a huge difference. It is user friendly for new comers to the genre while also offering a lot for more seasoned players. It is very fair with its free to play model. It looks great and controls really well. A winner…so give it a shot.
Todd
Braveland Pirate ($2.99, iOS, Tortuga Team) – the 3rd release in the Braveland series of turn based strategy games, this one has the most to offer overall. It is a good looking, nice sounding game that offers some nice tweaks to the gameplay. Ultimately, however, the game lacks depth and it ends up being a bit bland. It is not a bad game by any chance, but it fails to draw in the player with meaningful tactical play. Todd will keep playing it a bit to see if the progression improves that play, but it does not appear so at this point.

Jared and Todd – Puzzle Craft 2 (Free, iOS and Android, Chillingo) – Jared takes the lead on this one but we are both flat out loving this game. It has some sort of magic that makes us keep playing and playing it. Well worth a shot as it is fun, a bit strategic, and very fair with its free-to-play model. A great follow-up to a classic game. Try it today!
Jared – Mucho Taco (Free, Noodlecake Studios Inc., iOS) – Jared had a bit of fun with this swipe-based take on the “Clicker” genre. However, it does not stand out amongst the pack, so you can probably stay clear of it and opt for some of the better titles in the genre.
Todd – Skilltree Saga ($2.99, iOS, Headup Games) – Todd did not put much time into this RPG, turn-based (sort of) battler. It has some interesting and sort of unique ideas, but it remains to be seen how everything ties together. He will report back on it next week.
Jared – Oraia Rift ($2.99, Ahmed Al Shebli, iOS) – touted as a Zelda type of game, this one is underwhelming Jared a bit at the moment. There are flashes of the fun that makes a game like Oceanhorn (an awesome iOS take on the Zelda game style) shine, but this game is not the complete package and is a bit rough around the edges. Jared will play a bit more to see if things pick up, but right now he cannot fully recommend it.

Rebuild 3 ($4.99, iOS, Sarah Northway). Jared is loving, really loving, this new zombie survival, society rebuilding strategy game. Everything meshes really well in the 3rd game in the series and Jared is fairly certain this could be “game of the month” for September and in his Top 10 for the year. Well worth the price of entry and he will return next week for a more full review of the game.
Todd
Unkilled – (Free, iOS and Android, Madfinger). Essentially the sequel to Deadtrigger 2, this first person shooter set in zombie infested areas provides some nice looking, solid FPS action. However, the “free to play” is strong in this one and you will need to grind and/or pay some money to keep at things. Todd is personally getting tired of this payment scheme; probably because he hits it pretty much every week. If you just concentrate on 1 free to play game at at time, you might dig this one. Worth checking out because it looks and plays well, but Todd has deleted it already.
Jared
Pokemon Shuffle Mobile (FREE, iOS, The Pokemon Company). Jared tried, but really did not enjoy, this free to play, Match 3 take on the Pokemon franchise. It is okay but lacks strategy and seems unfairly difficult at times; as well as quite demanding with regard to the free to play aspects of the game. Jared will keep it for his young son to play, but he is done with the game himself.
Todd
Dungeon Boss (Free, iOS and Android, Big Fish Games) Todd really wanted to love this charming, free to play take on a dungeon crawler (minus almost all of the “crawler” part). The game looks and sounds great. The turn based action is solid enough, but it lacks strategy and becomes a bit “samey” the more you play. Free to play elements are grindy and have all of the tropes Todd has seen tens of times before. Tons or heroes to unlock and evolve, different currencies, consumable items, an energy system…all of these add up to a “Delete” for Todd but you might want to check it out if you are not tired of this free to play formula. They do what they do really well, but some of us are tired of it and want something different.

Ski Safari 2 ($1.99 w/IAP, iOS, Sleepy Z Studios) – Todd loved the first one and thinks this one is just as good while also ramping up the fun to even higher levels. It is a bit “more of the same”, so if you played the first and want something different, then this might not be for you. Otherwise, you owe it to yourself to check out this endless runner with lots of depth, whimsy and charm.

Demon’s Rise ($2.99, Rajpreet Dhillon) – a nice take on the turn based strategy formula. Tons of characters to chose from, some decently deep mechanics, and good, solid gameplay all add up to a winner…but Jared felt is was missing that “special something”, and that was keeping it from greatness. Worth a shot but you might want to wait a bit to see what the updates bring to the game.
Todd
Sage Solitaire (Free, iOS, Zach Gage) – a nice take on a card based solitaire game with a poker mechanic at its core. Todd digs the game and finds it fun in short bursts. Overall, a nice little time waster but nothing too amazing. As with so many solitaire games, winning can come down to luck as much as to skill. Worth trying for sure, though!
Jared
Swipey Rogue (Free, First Order Games iOS and Android) – Jared really, really loves this quick, auto-running swipe/rogue game. A few different modes, ease of play, and a lot of charm all combine to make this a “must try”.
Todd
Galactic Keep ($3.99, iOS, Gilded Skull Games) – so much love and attention to detail obviously got poured into this game and it oozes with atmosphere. The art style is very unique and the game play hearkens back to table top RPGs of yore. But, the combat mechanic lacks diversity and quickly bogs down the game. Todd decided to stop playing after a few hours, although others might not feel quite the same way. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Pocket God vs. Desert Ashes ($4.99, Bolt Creatvie) – what do you get when you take characters from the classic Pocket God series and thrown them into a turn based strategy game with characters and elements from the Mecha Wars game? You get this. But this turns out to be only so-so. The game plays well and has its moments, but it does not completely gel together. It might be another “wait for an update and see”, but Jared cannot recommend it now at its current price point.

Todd played
Pac-Man 256 (Free, iOS & Android, Bandai Namco – Hipster Whale and 3 Sprockets). He loves the game so far and thinks it is a really well done, retro inspired endless runner. Great controls, visuals, audio, and game play all come together for brilliant gaming goodness. Everyone should grab this to try it. Fans of Pac-man will dig it but non-fans should also appreciate it. And its monetization scheme is very fair and non-intrusive.
Jared played
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 ($4.99, Frontier Developments Ltd., iOS). This port of the PC classic stands the test of time (mostly) and offers some really fun sim/management gaming to the iOS world. Jared wants to spend more time with it before offering a full review, but he really enjoys what he is playing so far. If you liked it before, you will like it now.
Todd played:
Horizon Chase ($2.99, iOS, Aquiris Games). Wow, what a great modern take on the classic arcade racer (think Outrun) genre. Great visuals, wonderful music and audio, and a plethora of challenging tracks keep Todd coming back for more of this game. He recommends it for fans of the genre but he will play it more in the coming week to the offer a full review for those who might be on the fence.
Jared gave an update on:
Loot and Legends (Free, iOS, DropForge). – Jared has been playing this a lot and he is really digging it. The artstyle, fun story, and gameplay all make for a highly entertaining RPG. He recommends it highly.

Monsters Ate My Metropolis (Free, iOS and Android, Adult Swim Games) – Jared digs the game but does not like it as much as Monsters Ate My Condo. It is a much different sort of but but he feels there might not be enough depth to it. He goes encourage folks to take a quick look for themselves.
Matt:
Splatoon. Yes, taking a cue from Nintendo Pulse, we talk a bit about Splatoon and Todd decides he needs to finally take the inky plunge and buy this game.
Jared (again):
Tactile Wars (Free, iOS and Android, Ankama Games) – Jared really digs this touch-centric strategy game. Recommended!
Todd:
focused on Cards and Castles and played nothing else new this week.
We then go into a fairly deep delve with Matt regarding all things Cards and Castles. Version 2.0 of the game released this week and it was a really huge change to the overall game. We ask hard hitting questions like “Why are the towers gone?” and “Why did you nerf my Barbarian?”…and he has some great answers. Honestly.

ToG #209 for the week of August 10, 2015 has arrived.
In it, Jared and Todd start off with a new feature…Game of the Month…in which they pick the favorite game that they have played in the past month. They also pick some Honorable Mentions. With these 6 games alone, you could have a full month or 2 of gaming goodness.
Then it was on to news/upcoming games, etc.
Finally it was time for some new game talk:
Loot and Legends (DropForge Games, Free, iOS) – Jared is really enjoying this game. He needs more time with it and it might need an update or 2, but this is another early contender for game of the year if they keep working on the game. Grab it today!
Decluster Zero: Bullet Nocturne ($1.99, iOS, Masayuki Ito) – Todd played the first game and really enjoyed it. The sequel ramps things up and adds some new features. Well worth it if you enjoy the bullet hell / schmup genre. Oh, and there’s a free version if you want to try before you buy.
Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon ($4.99, Tiger Style, iOS) – a long awaited sequel to an early iOS classic, Jared has begun his quest and is enjoying it immensely. He has not played enough for a full review, but if you have fond memories of the first game, you should probably just go ahead and grab this one now.
Doom & Destiny Advanced ($1.99, iOS & Android, Matteo Nicolotti) – Todd liked the first version of this dungeon crawler/rpg/zelda-esque/parody game but was put off by the controls. This updated, improved version does handle better but the controls are still not very intuitive and they really should be optimized for modern touch screen devices. This might be a “Todd thing”, so he will keep playing and report back later.
Xenoshyft Onslaught (CMON, $1.99, iOS) – a nice like take on the strategy board/card game. Jared likes it but the physical game relies on a fairly important co-player mechanic…something that computer AI just cannot replicate. He will try multiplayer with some suckers…I mean…friends and report back soon.

We gave some updates on games we talked about in the past few weeks.
We talked about some new games too:
Battle Orbs (Free, iOS, Armor Games) – Jared and Todd are both digging this Free to Play Match 3 RPG game. Neither of them are far into it, but it seems pretty cool based on what they have played.
Angry Birds 2 (FREE, iOS, Rovio) – Jared likes this new entry into the Angry Birds family; although it does not bring very many new hooks into the genre. It looks a treat but there are some pretty heavy Free to Play elements in the game. That’s probably ok, though, because this game is sort of meant to be played in short bursts.
World of Warriors: Quest (Free, iOS & Android, Mind Candy Games) – Todd likes this odd little turn based strategy game. It offers some twists to the genre and it really streamlines and speeds up the genre. Controls could be cleaner, but that may come with an update. One odd thing…there is no sign of any free to play elements at all (as of yet.). Certainly worth trying if you like the genre.
Cosmonautica ($6.99, iOS/Android, Chasing Carrots) – even though this is technically still in Beta, Jared sees a truly wonderful game building here. It is part space trading game and part “The Sims”, all wrapped up in a very impressive looking package. He will keep playing and give us all a full review soon, but this one might be worth diving into even before that day comes.
Impulse GP ($2.99, iOS, EcoTorque) – Todd is enjoying this futuristic moto bike racer…but not as much as he had hoped. It looks great, handles well, and has some interesting game elements…but somehow those great parts do not add up to a great game. He will keep playing it, though, to see how it all pans out.
Magic Duels (Free, iOS, Wizards of the Coast) – Jared likes this take on the classic card game, but even a fancy new digital app cannot speed up the gameplay…and that can be a bit of a problem for him. Todd still cannot play it on his older iPad 4. Overall, it is worth a try if you are into CCGs, but Hearthstone, Sol Forge, and its ilk may have surpassed Magic – at least in the mobile gaming world.
Here is the rundown of the games we talked about:
Prune, ($3.99, iOS, Joel McDonald) – Todd is really enjoying this moody, uplifting, esoteric, arty puzzle game. Who would have thought growing a tree could be so much fun? This is the full package…graphics, sound, music, and gameplay. Nicely done. Buy it if it looks at all interesting to you.
Warhammer 40,000 Deathwatch ($4.99, iOS, Rodeo Games) – We all knew it would happen…Jared purchased this game and he is really loving its turn-based strategy goodness. He will give a full review later, but he already thinks it is worth the money.
Guardian Sword (was Free not it is $2.99, iOS, Picsoft Studio) – Todd likes this Dungeon Raid meets Hero Emblems matching RPG game. It has some depth (and gains more the more you play) and it is fun although the graphic style, lack of an easily accessible map, and grinding can get in the way a bit. Still, it is fun and worth the money. A full review will follow soon.
Long Siege ($1.99, iOS and Android, Anomaly Studios) – another Match 3 type of game, Jared is enjoying this so far but he needs more time with it. He will revisit it in an upcoming show. It does seem promising from what he has played.
Card King: Dragon Wars (Free, iOS, Kung Fu Factory) – Todd has put an hour or 2 into this so far. It is a very interesting take on a card battler with some new ideas and plenty of graphical flair. There is a lot of depth here…maybe too much at times…and the games can go on for too long, but this one is definitely worth a look if you are interested in the genre.
Callys Caves 3 (Free, iOS, Jordan Pearson) – a nice little platformer. Jared is enjoying the game a lot but he needs more time with it to render a verdict. Since it is free to play, he recommends people at least give it a shot.
Qbert Rebooted (Free, iOS, Sideline Amusements) – Todd grabbed this to go along with the Down the Mountain and Mountain Goat Mountain games of the past 2 weeks. 3 weeks, 3 Qbert-esque games. Weird. This game is the weakest of the bunch. There is just not a ton here to keep it interesting and there is a fair bit of grinding (and pop up ads). Nevertheless, if you are craving some old school gaming, give this one a shot…play for a few minutes and call it a day. Video gaming memories can be special…recreating them today – not so much.

Mountain Goat Mountain (Free, iOS, Zynga) – Todd is really enjoying this Crossyroad/Upside down Q-Bert score chase game.
Forest Home (Free, Binary Mill, Android and iOS) – Jared is digging this interesting puzzle game. Even with its free to play energy system, something Jared usually cannot tolerate, he highly recommends this for some fun puzzle game entertainment.
Super Awesome Quest (Free, iOS and Android, Boomzap) – despite being fairly light on strategy, this game somehow works for Todd and he is enjoying it…maybe more than he should. Try it and see for yourself. The free to play elements are fairly non-intrusive.
Tales from Deep Space (Amazon Game Studios, $3.99 regularly $6.99, iOS and Amazon) – Jared is really enjoying this whimsical, interesting game. He recommends grabbing it while it is on sale.
Barcode Knight (Magic Cube, $.99, iOS) – Jared likes, but does not love, this odd little game. He will spend a bit more time with it this week to give a more full fledged opinion to the listeners.
Nono Islands (Illusion Labs, Free, iOS) – Jared advises everyone to not bother with this game. Bad control mechanics coupled with heavy free to play elements drag it down.

Magic The Gathering Duels (Free, iOS, Wizards of the Coast) – Jared is enjoying the game and liking the flexibility of deck construction. Todd cannot play it – not compatible with iPad 4. Bummer.
Adventures of Pip (Tic Toc Games, $14.99, iOS) – Jared really likes this innovative platformer and MFI support is the sweet, sweet icing on this lovely gaming cake. Todd is again bummed out…not compatible with iPad 4. We also talked about its price point.
Alphabear (Free, Spry Fox iOS and Android) – a neat and charming little word puzzle game that Jared recommends folks check out.
Don’t Starve ($4.99, Klei Entertainment, iOS) – a Steam darling comes to iOS and gets a really nice port. Jared loved a lot about this challenging rogue-like but he wishes it offered save points or some carry-over stat boosts because playing for 2++ hours, dying, and having to start over from scratch is not always that fun.
Story Warriors: Fairy Tales ($2.99, Thumbstar Games, iOS) – Jared likes this very innovative interactive story book and it could be a fun way to teach your kids to read…or to keep them interested in reading.
Rumble City (Avalanche Studios, Free, iOS and Android) – an interesting strategy game. Jared needs more time with it before handing out a review.
Todd’s new games:
Todd mostly gave updates on games from the last few weeks.
He only played 2 new games; although that would have been 4 if he had a newer iOS device.
Shooting Stars ($2.99, iOS, Noodlecake) – a tongue in cheek, pixel art SCHMUP. Todd digs it but is not head over heals about it. It tries too hard (or not hard enough; depending on how you look at it) with its humor. It is worth trying if you are craving something thematically different in the SCHMUP genre.
Down the Mountain (Free, iOS, Umbrella) – Crossyroad meets Q-Bert. Todd likes, but does not love, this game. It has some very fun elements but that Q-Bert game play style of only being able to jump “down” can really add to the frustration here. Why not innovate and allow the player to jump “up” the map? It would help a lot. Nevertheless, it is free, does not have too many ads, and has some fun game play elements that may grab others more than it grabbed Todd. Try it and see.

The Executive ($2.99, iOS, Riverman Media) – Todd grabbed this one and, while he has not had a lot of time in the game yet, he can already tell that its quirky sense of style and amalgamation of game play elements – from platforming to brawling to company building – work well. He recommends it already but he will try to come back next week with a full review.
Democracy 3 ($4.99, iOS, Positech games) – Jared dug back 1 year for this diamond in the rough. A very interesting and different strategy game that had made Jared think more about being a political leader and the challenges faced therein. He gives it a 4 out of 5; despite some issues with lag in the game. Check it out.
Groove Coaster 2 (Free, iOS & Android, Taito) – the sequel to one of Todd’s favorite mobile rhythm action games, Todd is playing this on Android and enjoying the experience. He has not played enough of it yet to really see how the Freemium model comes into play, but he feels it is worth grabbing nonetheless. Fun music and fun gameplay are in store.
Portal Pinball (Zen Studios, $1.99) – Jared, who admittedly does not really like digital pinball games, grabbed this because he was craving something more in the Portal world. Oh, and Todd sort of talked him into it. Jared likes the game…in short bursts. He does not love it, but it is not really his style to begin with. Todd tends to really enjoy the Zen Pinball games, but has not tried this one yet. This is probably well worth it if you like other Zen Pinball games and the world of Portal.
CivMiner – a CivCrafter Expansion (Free, iOS, Naquatic) – Todd is playing this game but asks the universal question of all clicker games…”Why?”. Truly, there are things to do but none of them really appeal to Todd at the moment; mostly because there are so many other games, with richer experiences and actual gameplay, out there. And there are better clicker games out there too. Try it if you want, but it will probably not stick around long on your device.
Battlelore: Command (Fantasy Flight Games, $9.99) – Jared really enjoys this deep strategy title (which may still be on sale as of this posting) but he did not completely understand it until he watched some “Let’s Play” videos about the board game version. So, that is his pro tip – seek out and watch some of those videos and you will have a much better time grasping this game. Highly recommended.
Todd and Jared are both still playing, and still loving: Capitals (Nimblebit) and Cards and Castles (Bit Mass). Jared is still playing Fallout Shelter (Bethesda)…and all of them are FREE – so grab ’em and get gaming!

Piloteer ($2.99, iOS, Fixpoint Productions – Whitaker Trebella) – Todd is really digging this very challenging ragdoll physics, jetpack “sim” meets Rocketeer game. The dev is very active and the game looks and plays a treat. 4 1/2 stars.
Door Kickers ($4.99 Killhouse Games SRL) – Jared has been digging this strategy game a lot this week. It has a ton of content so he is not ready for a full review, but all signs point to “Buy this game”.
Her Story ($4.99, iOS, Sam Barlow) – Todd has been “playing” this game. It is part interactive video novel, part text adventure, and all fun. You unravel a mystery by watching video clips and piecing them together. It is different, for a FMV game, and it is not so much a game as a well thought-out and acted piece of interactive fiction. 4 stars.
Heroes and Castles 2 ($1.99, Foursaken Media) – Jared spoke on this one and he is really enjoying it so far. He thinks it is worth the price of admission but they also have a free version that you can try if you are on the fence. Todd owns it too but has not really played it yet.
Sonic Runners (Free, iOS & Android, Sega) – Todd played this and he just could not recommend it. There are the makings of a fun, side-scrolling endless runner here, but they are overwhelmed by ham-fisted freemium models, pointless cutscenes, and ads. Try it if you love Sonic, but be warned…
Todd’s suggestion to Sega…get rid of the junk, flip it to a more Crossyroad method of payment, and you might have yourself a winner.
Fairystone ($2.99, iOS, Odenis Studio) – Todd just started this. It is a happy and vibrant block builder in the vein of Minecraft. No fights. No campaign. No dying. Just a fun little builder that you, and maybe your kids, will enjoy tinkering with.

Capitals – we both ponied up and paid for Unlimited Lives during that 1/2 off sale. We both have 6+ games running at any given moment. Bring it!
Cards and Castles – Jared has taken a huge lead on this game while Todd trails behind…too timid to battle it out with others. Overall, this is an awesome game and we are hopeful we will be talking to the devs on the show in the near future.
Fallout Shelter – Jared was doing so well at this that he broke the game and actually had to restart from scratch. Well…that is half true. The game crashed and he had to restart. He is still loving it. Todd has not found the time to play…and probably won’t. His loss.

Fallout Shelter (Free, iOS, Bethesda) – Jared gave a dissertation on this game. Suffice it to say that he truly loves this game and he encourages everyone to check it out – now! He finds it to be an excellent example of Free to Play done right…although what will it mean for the future of Bethesda??? Todd just started the game but can already tell how polished it is.
Xenowerk ($1.99, iOS, Pixelbite) – Jared enjoys this twin stick shooter with both its touch controls and with his MFi controller…with a slight edge to the controller. He finds is a worthwhile purchase and recommends it although he does see some room for improvement within the game and with its controls.

Nubs’ Adventure (Free/$4.99 unlock, iOS & Android,iMakeGames) – Todd really loves this pixel MetroidVania platformer. Great look and feel.
Healer Quest (Rablo Games, Free with unlock $2.99, iOS and Android) – Jared likes it but feels it could offer more. Worth trying; for sure.
Angry Birds Fight! (Free, iOS & Android, Rovio) – Todd was not impressed. The Match 3 part is serviceable if forgettable while the “fight” segments are fairly useless and boring (and even annoying at times). Pass.
Triangulae ($1.99, Ricardo Fonseca, iOS) – Jared found this fun and serviceable; if a little on the easy side. A solid, if lackluster release. Worth trying. Good but not great.
Zen Pinball eSports edition (Free, iOS, Zen Studios). – using a tie-in with the Skillz service, gambling comes to the Zen Pinball world. The jury is out on this one; at least as far as the gambling is concerned, but you can play a little pinball for free if you want.
Blades of Brim (Free, iOS, SYBO) – Jared, echoing Todd from last week, really loves this behind the back endless runner. Highly recommended if you like the genre.

Cards and Castles (Free, iOS and Android, Bit Mass) – Jared really likes it. Todd has it but has not tried it yet. Grab it, mess around with the game, and make your own decision from there.

Bad Dinos ($2.99, iOS, Insomniac Games). Jared likes this tower defense game so far but needs to play it more to give a full review. It does have some interesting tricks up its sleeve, but are those enough to make it stand out from a very tight TD pack?
Towering Oceans (Free, iOS, Zig Zag Zoom). Jared recommends steering clear of this Tiny Towers wannabe. Don’t download this.
Kindo ($1.99, iOS, Space Bears). Jared likes, but does not love, this simple strategy game. He will play it for a week or 2 more and report back but, as of now, this is a wait and see type of purchase.
Coup (Free, iOS, Banana and Co). Jared loves the social, interactive, bluff nature of the actual physical card game, and they do a great job translating the basics of the game to mobile, but it just falls flat when you cannot play live against other people. It’s not the port’s fault, it is the nature of the game itself – it basically demands you play it in the same room with other people. Pass.

Bears Vs. Art (Free, Halfbrick, iOS and Android) – Jared is enjoying the classic Halfbrick polish and style that suffuses this game. Recommended.
Crystal Siege ($2.99 On Sale, iOS, FDG Entertainment). Jared thinks it brings some new elements to the Tower Defense genre and likes it; especially at its current sale price.
Todd:
Marvel Future Fight (Free, Android & iOS, Netmarble). Todd is just starting with this one but likes its action RPG, Marvel universe setting so far.
Very quick mention of Rex Rocket ($1.99, iOS, Castle Pixel). We received the download code for this one and Todd is digging the game so far. This game has wit, depth, and challenge. He will report back on it in the coming weeks.
Very quick mention of Skatelander (Free, iOS, Underdog Gaming Private Limited). Crossy Road meets Endless Runner on a skateboard. Worth looking at but Todd needs more time with it to give a full rating.

– AdVenture Capitalist! (Free, iOS and Android, Kongregate). Jared recommends it and it is his is current “Passive Game” of choice.
– Does Not Commute (Free, iOS and Android, Mediocre AB) – Todd likes it a lot. It is a pretty, challenging, and fun game worth checking out.
– Century City (Free, iOS, Pine Entertainment) – Jared was not impressed. His advice…don’t download it.
– Pinball Sniper (Free, iOS and Android, Ketchapp) – Todd thought it was OK but it did not really “grab” him. Not a keeper for him but it is free so give it a try and see for yourself.
– Caves N’ Chasms ($3.99, iOS and Android, Chronicle Games). Jared is so-so on this game but needs more time with it. He will check back on it in a future episode.
– Devious Dungeon 2 ($.99, iOS, Ravenous Games Inc.) – Jared is enjoying it for the solid, well-controlled platformer that it is. Recommended.

Well the iPad is here, and it’s awesome! In this episode Anthony and I talk about all things iPad and spend a bit of time at the end of the episode to talk about Apple’s reveal of iPhone OS 4.0 and what it will bring to the table. We talk about the games we purchased at launch including Mirror’s Edge, Geometry Wars: Touch, Warpgate HD, Pocket Legends and Flight Control HD. Personally I feel that the iPad is a game changer and am eager to see what comes out in next the few months.

Touch of Gaming Episode #2 is finally here. Rob joins me in this episode where we talk about Labyrinth, LEGO Batman, Radius and the potential for iPhone snap on gaming controls. We also give our impressions on Critter Crunch, Tris and LED Football. I even left in a bit of a screwup at the end so you all can hear how a live show can sometimes backfire on you ;)
And with this episode, the back fill of previously recorded episodes comes to an end! Our regular weekly-ish release schedule will continue on from here. We are very excited to of had the chance to sit down with Brian Greenstone the President and CEO of Pangea Software to talk about Pangea’s iPhone games and the development process. We’re hoping that this is the first of many developer interviews as we found it both informative and fun to do! Welcome to the Touch of Gaming Podcast… Preview! We are here to bring a quick and informative show to all or you iPhone or iPod Touch users.
