Jana describes her path to screenwriting (she acted for many years prior) and then shares how she, Matt Smukler (the director), and the Morning Moon production team turned a difficult, real-life story into a poignant, darkly humorous, and joyful movie. She also talks about the writers’ strike, her favorite author, her next few projects (one is a sequel to an early-2000s movie with a bit of a cult following…), and her best advice for aspiring screenwriters.

Charlotte discusses the meaning behind Sushi Tuesdays–the day she dedicated to self-care after her husband’s death and the name of the blog she started as she navigated the “mess of grief, mothering, childrearing, and widowing.” She also talks about her late husband Sam, the people who helped her get by, the role of writing in processing her grief, and ultimately, how important it is to speak openly about suicide to take away its stigma and help those who are suffering in silence.

Zibby speaks to award-winning author Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai about Dust Child, a powerful and hauntingly beautiful saga about two Vietnamese sisters, an American veteran, and an Amerasian man whose lives intersect in surprising ways, set during and after the war in Vietnam. Nguyễn reveals how her experience working with veterans, reuniting war-separated families, and bringing former enemies together (in addition to her own memories of the war) inspired this novel. She also describes the lives of abandoned Amerasian children in Vietnam (the children of the dust) and explains how she used poetry, music, nature, and joy to create a book that is as much about trauma as it is about healing.
