Ever since the famed Greek philosopher Plato first wrote of a fabled continent called Atlantis more than two thousand years ago, scholars have been locked in fierce debate as to whether such a place truly existed. While a few rare individuals have taken Plato’s words seriously, most scoff at the idea that an advanced civilization could vanish as completely as if it had never existed. Such is a bit like imagining an elephant could walk through a snowdrift without leaving footprints, making it easy to ignore the entire subject and write it off as yet another example of New Age pseudo-science or, at best, an fantastic and historically indefensible fable. And this is not an unreasonable position either. After all, Plato described the place as being as large as Libya (an ancient term for North Africa) and Asia combined, making one reasonably confident it should be hard to miss. And yet no one has managed to produce as much as a coral reef that might have marked its ancient shoreline, much less an entire submerged continent. But the search continues and, if anything, appears to be growing in both scale and sophistication until today it has become something of a technological/historical holy grail for the twenty-first century.

It’s been 70 years since the Third Reich was sponged, purged, and blasted from the surface of the Earth, yet popular culture can’t get enough of the Nazis, hence programs like the recent Amazon show The Man in High Castle. They’re people it’s perfectly politically correct to hate, but they’re such symbols of power that they’re seductive to emulate, especially their fashion and poster design, or fun to lambast. But when writers bother to make them three dimensional characters instead of pure evil cartoons, then they become scarier and more satisfying to see get beaten. The really stellar characters will serve a really unnerving point: Making it possible to imagine ourselves as someone who would join them if we were in that situation.

I still find time to see what’s going on at the Xavier’s School for Mutants, The Daily Planet and the Avenger’s Mansion when I can. Rather than publish just another comic book list, (we seem to have gone overboard recently) I thought it would be fun to showcase original artwork. I found some artists who were willing to follow my bizarre instructions: create a new superhero character that is a mashup of a Marvel superhero and a DC superhero.

World War II started off with the Nazis pretty much wanting to control the whole world. Twenty years after the previous World War, Europe was still in a period of recuperation and Germany was one of the countries worst off in the aftermath. In an astonishingly short period of time, they were able to rebuild their war ravaged country, consolidate the army –even though they weren’t allowed to- and begin down a path, in their minds, thought to bring them justice. Besides this, Hitler also had in mind to transform Germany into a self-sustaining empire, by displacing the peoples from what is now present-day Ukraine and take those fertile lands for his own.

Ultimately, the goal of advertising agencies is to sell product. At times, how they do that comes down to how creative they want to be. In some cases, the advertisers choose to be outrageous just to get people’s attention, and now and then some advertisers go too far, and their commercial is banned outright. Or, if they did air, they only played in certain areas of the world, because what would be considered cheeky on one continent may be too risqué in another. These are 10 banned and controversial commercials that are also pretty freaking funny.
