337 - Top 10 THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS That Will Mess With Your BRAIN Feb 14, 2020
    Show notes

are stories or analogies that attempt to shed light on an array of topics. Sometimes they are hypothetical situations to help us look at the world differently, or they show the paradoxes in human nature. Or they can help us visualize complicated concepts with the simplicity of a story. But no matter what they explain or illustrate, these thought experiments will hopefully mess with your mind, at least a little bit.

336 - Top 10 THINGS You May Have Wondered About the POPE Feb 13, 2020
    Show notes

Correction from https://www.youtube.com/user/jlarson87: Pope Pius XI left the Vatican incognito in 1948, citing Italian Unification riots as the reason. However, this is impossible as he died in 1939 and Italian unification happened in in the mid 1800's. I think you're referring to a riot that happened in the 1840's where Pope Pius IX left the Vatican in a similar disguise.

335 - Top 10 SURPRISING Origins Behind Well Known NICKNAMES Feb 13, 2020
    Show notes

Ever since people learned how to start making words, they started using them to describe each other. Of course while we all have names, many of us have also been subjected at one time or another to nicknames. These words can be used endearingly, or just in fun between friends, but they aren’t always innocent. Nicknames can also be used to describe huge swathes of people in one go and sometimes the meaning behind the words isn’t always pleasant. On the other hand, sometimes words are used expressly with the intent to be insulting and yet their original meaning was largely benign. The world of words is a strange place indeed.

334 - Top 10 REAL Reasons CLOWNS Freak Us OUT Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

In 2014, a spokesperson for Clowns of America International named Glenn Kohlberger contacted publications such as The Hollywood Reporter to express grievances over the character Twisty in the TV program American Horror Story. He said that a portrayal of a person dressed as a clown, committing mass murder, was only going to make it harder for clowns to provide entertainment for sick children in hospitals.

    333 - Top 10 OLDEST CITIES in the WORLD Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

Cities with millennial history can offer you much more than just beautiful architecture and unique artifacts. They bear the signs of previous epochs and civilizations, and display both the positive and negative developments of mankind. These cities are full of amazing stories and legends, and are the biggest lures for seasoned explorers. Let’s talk a little bit about the cities that are nearly as old as the hills on which they were built.

    332 - Top 10 Most Famous THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS Feb 11, 2020
    Show notes

Thought experiments are mental concepts or hypotheses, often resembling riddles, which are used by philosophers and scientists as simple ways of illuminating what are usually very dense ideas. Most often, they’re used in more abstract fields like philosophy and theoretical physics, where physical experiments aren’t possible. They serve as some hearty food for thought, but given their complex subject matter, it’s not unusual for even the thought experiment itself to be nearly incomprehensible. With this in mind, here are ten of the most famous thought experiments, along with explanations of the philosophical, scientific, and ethical ideas they work to explain:

    331 - Top 10 MIND BLOWING Facts About CHINA Feb 11, 2020
    Show notes

China is crazy-big. How crazy-big? Let’s just say if they were having a contest for ‘biggest, craziest nation on planet Earth’, the Middle Kingdom would not only win hands down, it would leave all the other countries scratching their heads and saying “whoa, get a load of that guy.”

    330 - Top 10 GREAT American Achievements Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 blasted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This spacecraft would take 3 American astronauts to the Moon, landing 2 on its surface and return all 3 safely to Earth, less than a decade after the first manned space flight. The US and Americans have achieved many great things, and here we list 10 of them. Not all significant inventions or achievements are necessarily for humanitarian purposes, some of them are for war. Some, like DDT and the polio vaccines saved millions of lives. We list 10 that we think you will find interesting, and invite you to let us know what other American accomplishments we should have listed. (America bashers beware! This list is by definition US-centric.)

329 - Top 10 Facts About the DEADLIEST War of the 19TH CENTURY Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

The 19th century had its fair share of wars that had high body counts. This includes the Napoleonic Wars, the Austro-Prussian War, the War of 1812, and the American Civil War. However, the bloodiest and deadliest war of the 19th was the Taiping Rebellion, which took place in China and it went from December 1850 to August 1864.

    328 - Top 10 WEIRD Facts About Medieval CASTLES Feb 09, 2020
    Show notes

Every kid always wanted to live in a castle. Our images of castles consist of vague fairy tale notions, with moats and drawbridges and knights in shining armor. Oh, and maybe a dragon or two. But in reality, that doesn’t really come close to encapsulating what castles actually were, not to mention how far a typical Disney castle is from the real thing in terms of aesthetics. Here are some real lesser known facts about castles…
