EBPOM 2019 | Financial aspects of prehabilitation Jun 07, 2020
    Show notes

This piece presents the prehabilitation 'business case'; why it's important to care about costs, how outcomes and value based care can help and why money has to be important in healthcare.

How do we convert health benefits and risk management into something which explains the financial bottom line?

Can we really argue that a process which appears, at the point of practice, to take more time, resources and involve a shorter length of stay for patients, is actually cheaper for institutions in the long run and better value for patients?

Is there in fact more than one 'business case' for a proper perioperative prehabilitation clinic at your practice?

The Fit 4 Surgery website (Netherlands) is here: http://fit4surgery.nl/

Presented by Stefan van Rooijen, surgical resident in Maxima Medical Center, The Netherlands, lecturer at the first Health Innovation School (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and Reshape innovation), Surgical resident, Department of Surgery at Maxima Medical Center (ANIOS).

Periop SIG 2019 | Updates in cardiac devices Part 2 Jun 05, 2020
    Show notes

"Updates in cardiac devices, Part 2" was a talk originally given at the 8th Australian and New Zealand Symposium of Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group: "Updates in Perioperative Medicine 360" which took place between November 7th-9th 2019.

This piece is focused upon transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) devices. "A balloon valvular plasti in comparison to a TAVI is 90% of the risk, 10% of the gain" you're trading one problem with another, argues our speaker.

Find out more about ANZCA here: http://www.anzca.edu.au/

Presented by Dr Karl Poon, TAVI specialist at St Andrews War Memorial Hospital, Physician Proctor, Edwards LifeSciences, Senior Lecturer, University of Queensland Interventional cardiologist, The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane.

This piece is a look at some of the new technology which looks set to become more widely used. A leadless pacemaker is a small implantable "bullet like" device that sends electrical pulses to the heart whenever it senses that the heartbeat is too slow. Also new implantable cardioverter defibrillators are discussed as are implantable cardiac monitors. There is also discussion regarding cardiac resynchronization therapy.

Tackling the pain of the opioid crisis | AANA 2019 Jun 03, 2020
    Show notes

The opioid crisis "a unique American problem". This piece uncovers the origin of some of the misinformation about opioids, the consequences of calling pain a "fifth vital sign" and the absurd practice of waking patients up in the middle of the night to ask them if they are in any pain.

As these factors combined fatalities started to spiral into the crisis we see today. Recent statistics make for grim reading, in 2017 it was estimated over 47,000 Americans died from an opioid overdose. However action is now being taken; learn how The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) has pushed forward with a sensible, responsible, pain management strategy which tackles the crisis head on.

Opioids are a last resort, many cases do not need them at all and a 30 day prescription to a highly addictive substance is something practitioners should never take lightly. Furthermore ensure patients are well informed, not 'opioid naive' and ideally do not have a family history of opioid dependence.
