    Roundtable Highlight - Optimum optimisation? | EBPOM USA - Atlanta 2018 Sep 27, 2018
    Show notes

"It's one thing to optimise them to get them through surgery, it's another (...) to optimise them period!" - Dr Fleisher begins the conversation as the team circle round the tricky issue of patient optimisation in the 'fee for service' world. Many hospitals don't want to reduce surgery, can the bottom line be shifted closer toward the greater good of 'public health'? Dr Fleisher explains that 'per beneficiary per month' (PBPM) is one possible route. The conversation evolves from there.

What are your thoughts? We are always keen to tap into the collective knowledge of our global audience, join the debate and send the team an email: contact@topmedtalk.com

Recorded on the first day of the 'EBPOM USA - Masters Course' this podcast features Desiree Chappell, Monty Mythen, Dr Lee A. Fleisher Chair of Anesthesiology and Critical Care (University of Pennsylvania) and Vicki Morton DNP and Director of Clinical and Quality Outcomes at Providence Anesthesiology Associates University of South Carolina.

Roundtable Highlight - The Maryland 'Funding Experiment' | EBPOM USA - Atlanta 2018 Sep 26, 2018
    Show notes

In this piece the team talk about possibly one of the most interesting funding experiments in the US; The Maryland global budgeting experiment. January 2014, after months of negotiations between Maryland and federal authorities, global budgeting went statewide. It was voluntary for hospitals, but within six months every hospital in the state had signed up. Four years on and it is a fascinating case study in how healthcare can be funded in such a way as to essentially incentivise public health measures within the American system, something that was previously seen as a perennial problem.

How have times moved on since those early pioneering days when the relatively young profession of Anaesthesia was born?
