109 - The Chessboard Killer: Alexander Pichushkin Oct 15, 2018
    Show notes

Alexander Pichushkin insisted he’d killed sixty-three people after being apprehended in 2006 but authorities only had enough evidence to convict him of forty-eight murders. The bodies of other victims had vanished. He killed his first victim in 1992 and didn’t get caught until 2006. Not only was he not remorseful, he was proud. He was disappointed that he wasn’t convicted of killing more people than his idol, Chikatilo, convicted of 52 murders in 1992. His goal was kill 64 - one for every space on a chessboard. Why? Why did he want to kill anyone? Who did he kill? How did he kill them? And how did he get away with it for so damn long? We look into all of this, in another dark, October, true crime edition, of Timesuck.

108 - Lizzie Borden Took an Axe... Oct 08, 2018
    Show notes

During an oppressive heat wave in August 1892, prominent Fall River residents Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in their home; each dealt multiple and savage blows to their heads with a hatchet. Were they killed by Andrew's strange, thirty-two year-old daughter? A lot of evidence points to her being the killer. But, she was acquitted. I for one, think Lizzie was probably guilty. But will you? Make your own decision after listening to today's Timesuck?

107 - The Lost Colony of Roanoke Oct 01, 2018
    Show notes

In 1587, Englishman John White led a group of 118 colonists to what was supposed to Roanoke Island. One hundred fifteen of those colonists were never seen again after White returned to England to get word to Sir Walter Raleigh that the colonists desperately needed supplies. On August 18th, 1590, John White returned to Roanoke three years after leaving to get those supplies and found the settlement completely deserted and the word “Croatoan” carved into a fence post. And historians, archaeologists and others have been trying to figure out what happened to those initial settlers ever since. Hear there story and take a look into the most popular possibilities, today, on Timesuck!

106 - Andrew MF'n Jackson: Gunslingin' War Hero and President Sep 24, 2018
    Show notes

Andrew Jackson. Seventh president of the United States. First president born to immigrant parents. Only president to serve in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. First president to be a resident of a state other than Massachusetts or Virginia. A hard-nosed son of Scotch-Irish immigrants who was quick to throw down in a duel. He fought in the Revolutionary War at the age of 13 and then fought off a would be assassin with a cane at the age of 68. And then he fought a whole bunch of people in between. First President to be assaulted while in office. First to have someone try and kill him in office. And now, long in the grave, his legacy fights to be known for more than slave-ownership and the infamous Trail of Tears. He was a polarizing man in his lifetime and had been even more polarizing in death. And we suck him today, on Timesuck!

You probably won’t love everything about him but if you don’t respect at least some of the life he lived, well, then you’re just weren’t paying attention, today, on Timesuck!

    105 - Nikola Tesla: A Strange and Beautiful Mind Sep 17, 2018
    Show notes

Nikola Tesla. The prototypical "mad scientist". He slept only a few hours a night and devoted his life to science like none-other. A rags-to-riches-to-rags visionary who was a giant in the field of scientific invention, he created the first alternating current (AC) motor and was a pioneer in the field of wireless information transmission. He helped build the world’s first large-scale hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls. He even pushed scientific rival Thomas Edison into electrocuting pets to prove that his direct current technology was better and safer than Tesla’s alternating current. It was a AC versus DC, War of Currents nerd fight that lasted over a decade. He was also a strange man who fell in love with a pigeon and once claimed to have created a "death ray". And he gets sucked today, on Timesuck!

Bonus 26: The Way of the Samurai, a Brief History of Japan, and the Warrior Life of Miyamoto Musashi Sep 14, 2018
    Show notes

For centuries, Japan was ruled by a military dictatorship, the Shogunate, and the samurais were the enforcers of this rule. The samurai was soldier, police officer, judge, jury, and executioner. He was the warrior that would rather die than bring dishonor to himself, his family, or his daimyo. His days and ways were highly ritualized. Molded by Buddhist, Confucian, and Shintoist philosophy, his sword was his soul and he carried it with him throughout his days and slept with it by his side throughout his nights.

The samurai have a fascinating history and we explore it today, as well as the rise of the Japanese Shogunate, and the life of one of Japan's greatest warriors in this land of the rising sun edition, of Timesuck.

104 - The Children of God Sex Cult Sep 10, 2018
    Show notes

The Children of God cult aka The Family aka The Family International is still around today which is very disturbing considering their twisted origins and disgusting, sexually exploitive doctrinal past. Founded by David "Huge Perv" Berg in 1968 in Huntington Beach, California, they now operate to an unknown degree internationally, basing their existence in a highly sexualized interpretation of Biblical teachings, interpreting God's love as being expressed best through sex.

Berg initially took a second wife saying it was God's will, as cult leaders so often do. He then began showing his followers "God's love" first through secret orgies with high-ranking members, then through the demand to share cult member's wives, who were suddenly forbidden to deny male members "God's love". David then commanded female members to spread God's love and do missionary work, which centered around "Flirty Fishing", i.e., having sex with random dudes to encourage them to join the cult. From there, women members, were pushed into "Hooking for Jesus" - outright prostitution. And from there, members were encouraged to show their children "God's love" as outright pedophilia was sanctioned and encouraged, even when it was incestuous. All based on creative Biblical interpretation of course! This people are insane. And you learn all about them in today's fascinating and mind-boggling edition of Timesuck!

103 - The Public Suicide of Budd Dwyer and the Tragic Events That Led Up To It Sep 03, 2018
    Show notes

On January 22nd, 1987, forty-seven year-old R. Budd Dwyer, Republican State Treasurer of Pennsylvania, held a press conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to address his recent conviction on eleven counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, perjury, and interstate transportation in the aid of racketeering. The married father of two faced up to fifty-five years in prison and a $300,000 fine. He was scheduled to be sentenced the very next day, January 23rd, by a judge who he knew intended to make an example of him to deter other politicians from taking bribes in the future. The journalists gathered expected Budd to resign from his office. Instead, he took out a .357 magnum, put the gun in his mouth, pulled the trigger, and resigned from life. What very specific events led to this tragic decision? Find out, today, on Timesuck!

    Show notes

Dean Arnold Corll. The Candyman Killer. A Texas momma’s boy who first made friends with local kids by handing out candy from his family’s Houston candy store like the absolute creep he was. A man who then groomed a teen boy to be his murder, rape, and torture accomplice and then convinced a second teen boy to also help them; a second boy who would eventually shoot Dean dead. Before getting shot, Dean killed at least twenty-nine Houston area teens between 1970 and 1973, most dying just about the worst death imaginable on his homemade “torture board”.
