On Episode 46 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we're joined by TID's Chief Hydrologist, Olivia Cramer, to discuss the current water year.
From water available for irrigation to hydropower generation to flood control, TID is acutely aware of, and extremely dependent on, the hydrology of our watershed and local area. We’ve also lived through enough of the extremes – from drought to flooding - in just the last ten years even – to know that a normal water year is rarely the norm.

Thankfully, TID has a hardworking Hydrology team, constantly modeling the often erratic behavior of our weather system, to help us sort it all out.

All Things Rates Nov 13, 2024

On Episode 43 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we're joined by TID Chief Financial Officer and Assistant General Manager, Financial Services, Brian Stubbert, to discuss all things rates.
TID works hard to provide some of the lowest electric and irrigation water rates in the region and the state – all while maintaining reliability. As such, TID customers have not experienced a rate increase for 10 years. However, with increased costs to provide reliable service and meet various mandates imposed by the state, TID is considering a rate increase for the first time since 2015.

On this episode we discuss the key factors driving the proposed rate increased, the structure of TID rates, and the impacts of the proposed change.

Sustainable Groundwater Management Act Update Aug 14, 2024

On Episode 40 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we're joined by TID Director of Water Resources and Regulatory Affairs, Michael Cooke, to discuss a big SGMA update.
Following the third year of a historic drought, the state passed a series of bills that we refer to as SGMA and would become the framework for how groundwater would be managed throughout California. Since then, TID and its partners in the Turlock Subbasin have been developing (and revising) its plan to sustainably manage groundwater in our region.

On this episode we discuss the recent milestone we’ve reached with regard to SGMA, what has changed in the plan over the last two years, and what the next phase of SGMA looks like for TID and our growers.

Don Pedro Life Extension Project May 08, 2024

Groundwater Recharge Projects Feb 14, 2024

On Episode 34 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we're joined by TID Supervising Engineering Technician, Wes Miller, to discuss groundwater recharge projects.
The 2022-23 Water Year was the third wettest on record and, thanks for quick action and innovative solutions, TID was able to pilot several groundwater recharge projects using that flood water.

However, with ever changing hydrological conditions and the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (or SGMA), the District will need to continue innovate and implement new recharge projects.

TID History: How the District Became an Electric Utility Jan 10, 2024

On Episode 33 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we welcome back author and historian Dr. Alan Paterson to discuss the TID's history and how the District entered the retail electric business.
For 100 years, TID has served safe, reliable, and affordable power to our community – which is still vital to our region’s wellbeing today. But getting to that point was no easy task. It took visionaries, legal battles, and monumental decisions – and votes – to bring what we know as TID to fruition.

On this episode we discuss the District’s struggles in the early 20th Century, the construction of Old Don Pedro, and how TID came to be the electric utility in our region.

Water Rights and an Uncertain Future Jun 14, 2023

On Episode 26 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID External Affairs Manager, Josh Weimer, to discuss the California Water Rights system and current proposed legislation trying to change it.
Water Rights in California provide certainty for the availability of water for cities and towns throughout the state – especially for the fertile ag land within TID. That certainty allows for continued investment in infrastructure and the ability of TID to reliably store and deliver water, even in dry years. However, as the water rights system continues to be scrutinized, recent legislative proposals to change the water rights system would remove that certainty.

Irrigation Season and Operations Mar 08, 2023

TID’s mission is to deliver safe and reliable irrigation water and power, and while all District departments are working towards this mission, there is one area of TID that is central to making these essential services happen – the Power Control Center. 24/7, 365, holidays, and weekends, the Power Control Center is managing our local power grid, monitoring irrigation flows, and more – ensuring reliability for our customers. And when an outage occurs, they’re the first to respond to assist in restoration.

On this episode we discuss the role of the Power Control Center and its operators, the PCC’s response in an outage, and how operations have changed with emerging technologies.

Electric Vehicles and Transportation Electrification Sep 14, 2022

On Episode 17 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID's Monique Hampton to discuss the electrification of the transportation sector and TID’s electric vehicle program s.
Electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, but there are still many barriers that prevent the transportation sector from making the complete switch from gas vehicles. And with mandates on electric vehicle sales coming in 2035, electric vehicles will not be going away. To help remove some of these barriers, TID is leveraging credits from the state to fund an Electric Vehicle Program – offering rebates, information, and even the opportunity to test drive an electric vehicle, to our customers.

On this episode we discuss California’s shift to electric vehicles, how TID is removing barriers for customers to drive an EV, and what the District is doing to incorporate EVs into its vehicle fleet.

When you think of TID, the first thing that comes to mind may be a bucket truck you see en route to restore power or a truck on a canal bank delivering water to our growers. But, your first actual interaction with TID, either by phone or out in the community is likely going to be with a Customer Service Representative. Each day, TID Customer Service Representatives have contact with hundreds of customers over the phone and in-person, process hundreds of payments and applications, and succeed at making even a dreaded “customer service call” an enjoyable experience.

Hydrological Forecasting and Modeling Apr 13, 2022

On Episode 12 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID’s Olivia Cramer and Wes Monier to discuss the District's hydrological forecast, modeling, and operations .
In the midst of a third consecutive dry year, the TID Board of Directors set the irrigation season at only 27 inches of available water. However, even at nearly a 50% reduction of normal, TID growers are in better shape than much of the state – with some growers receiving 10% of normal or less.
Thanks to investments in data and technology, TID has become a leading innovator in hydrological forecasting and modeling, allowing the District to better prepare and plan for drought.

Project Nexus: First-in-the-Nation Solar Over Canals Project Mar 09, 2022

In February, TID announced Project Nexus, a pilot project to install 5 megawatts of solar panel canopies over our existing irrigation canals – the first project of its kind in the nation. The $20 million project, which is funded by the California Department of Water Resources, will not only benefit TID, but if successful, could become a template with potential to be replicated elsewhere in the state to help California achieve its water and energy goals.

Drought Sep 08, 2021

Don Pedro Relicensing Jul 14, 2021

Much like the way you need a license to drive a vehicle, Hydropower facilities like the Don Pedro Project require licenses from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to operate.
