We are joined today by Mark Dye. Mark is not only a professional gunsmith but is also the director of all gunsmithing curriculum at Montgomery Community College. Montgomery Community College, located within our work area, Montgomery County, is one of four schools in the country that offers an accredited Gunsmithing degree as well as short courses ranging from a couple days to a couple weeks. Brayden is a top angler on the Big Bass tournament trial, who's winnings include a $48,000 Bass boat. Brayden is an angler who thrives on the challenge of catching the next big one, and isn't afraid to share his knowledge with us. He has a social media presence to share more big bass action with the world. Heather is in charge of social media and outreach for the Big Bass tournament series, and she also administers many parts of each tournament that hosts over 900 anglers at any given event. Heather breaks down how the tournaments work and the advantages of competing at this level. "My laptop is gonna smell like fish." Jul 14, 2020

This episode finds Sam and Cody on location. We take the podcast gear on a boat ride as we travel surrounded by Three Rivers Land Trust Conservation projects. We start the trip off presenting dry flies on 5 weight rods, to bluegills. Then we transition to the tiny but mighty white bass with conventional spinning tackle. Finally as the moon begins to rise, we set in for our intended target: the blue catfish. Anchored in the dark, frogs in the background, the occasional rise of a fish slurping something from the surface, and 8 heavy duty baitcast reels bails set, ready for a strike. During this episode we discuss the underutilized resources in the fishing world. We discuss tactics for all types of freshwater species and spend considerable time talking about our target. We also land a few nice cats live.
If you are already an accomplished fisherman, or you are a novice looking to get into the action, this episode is for you, regardless of where you are located. Turkey Hunters Anonymous Apr 14, 2020

This episode begins with airing out frustrations of repairing modern equipment. "The Right to Work movement" is discussed briefly. Farmers and mechanics are no longer able to repair their equipment in house and must rely on expensive service calls and dealers which is both inefficient and expensive.
We then turn our focus to the most important thing on our minds: Turkey hunting. We share a couple of our recent adventures, several ending in some success. We talk about the emotional highs and lows of chasing gobblers. We are internally discussing an idea to spearhead a support group focused solely and repairing damaged souls and egos as they pursue the great Meleagris gallopavo. Also the group may discuss the consecutive wearing of turkey hunting socks for a period of more than 2 days.. (socks purchased from B&B)

Hot Lava, Quicksand, Dumb teenagers Jan 13, 2020

This episode gives a summary of the D6 WRC public regulation hearing. We discuss some of the more contentious topics and the key arguments for each side. We are thankful that someone else must make the hard decisions. We talk about a fascinating cinematic experience. Sam gives a review on 'Hunters of the Great North" by Stefansson. Then we talk about the important stuff: finding boats, Sam gives his boat a D+ rating, finding a stolen car and being absolutely ignorant on how to handle the situation. You see the world completely different as a teen and poor decisions are often made. We also discuss how we thought that lava, quicksand, and falling through ice into a raging river would be more of an issue in our personal lives than it actually is. Also, you ever been ice fishing? Southern boys are a bit leery of this pastime.

Mark Kenyon- That Wild Country Dec 03, 2019

Sam and Cody have the opportunity to sit down with Mark Kenyon to discuss conservation topics and his new book, That Wild Country. Mark shares his perspective on the conservation movement and the public lands movement. Sam and Cody had the opportunity to read and review the book, this episode shares some of the thoughts Cody and Sam had. Cleanliness is akin to godliness Oct 28, 2019

The title phrase was first recorded in a sermon in the 1700's but is an ancient thought dating back to early Hebrew. In short, folks realized that being clean was directly related to health. In this episode we talk about Sam's weekend on the paddle trip. Being a sweeper, or in cowboy terms "riding drag". We give a brief overview/recap from a previous episode on CWD (chronic wasting disease) and talk about sampling methods. This conversation lead us into meat and food care. Sam may have long lasting disease effects from a glass bottle injury on a shark fishing excursion...Or maybe from the bloody leatherman he used to remove a fish hook from his neck... Fishing is the cheapest form of entertainment, but could be the most dangerous if you fish with Sam.

A Life of Conservation Continues Apr 15, 2019

We first re-hash a few items of interest including the ultimate demise of migratory species. We discuss the interest and complexity surrounding bearded hen turkeys. We complete our interview with Dr. Gene Hester. We are joined in this segment by Mrs. Hester who tells a hilarious story about getting mail from the White House! Dr. Gene Hester talks about being checked by a federal wildlife officer for whom he had signed their credentials. Dr. Hester tells about his induction into an elite group of conservationists.

A Life of Conservation Apr 08, 2019

We are privileged to interview Dr. Gene Hester. Dr. Hester is renowned for his work as an innovator and advocate for wildlife and land conservation in the United States. He was a former Deputy Director of United States Fish and Wildlife Service, former National Park Service Associate Director, and held many positions in which he represented wildlife and land issues to Congress. In addition to these achievements, Dr. Hester was also a researcher and professor at various institutions where he contributed things such as the science surrounding wood duck brood rearing improvement and water quality stream sampling utilizing indicator wildlife species. Dr. Hester gives us a front row seat to his experiences and stories from a life of conservation.

Big Cats, Ecopreneurship, and White Bass Apr 01, 2019

Dr. Luke Dollar, researcher and professor, joins the show to talk about his work with various big cat species across the world. Sam and Cody talk with Dr. Dollar about his research background working with the Florida Panther, and the Fossa. Dr. Dollar is credited as an Explorer with National Geographic and has worked to catalog and collect scientific data on various large cat species across the globe, and he shares some of his work with Sam and Cody in this episode. Dr. Dollar discusses the importance of human/wildlife conflict mitigation and habitat protection. Dr. Dollar also discusses his work at Catawba College and the concept of Ecopreneurship and broadening a student's learning to enhance thier performance on the job. Sam and Cody spend some time talking about the subtle differences between white bass and white perch and the spawning runs of these fish.
