Episode 69: How Sharing Her Miscarriage Story Gave Her Strength with Stephanie Inghram Feb 17, 2021

Did you know that 1 in 4 women have a miscarriage?

It’s a heartbreaking thing that happens more often than we think. Although it is starting to be talked about more, it is still not talked about enough and that’s why Stephanie feels like she needs to continue to open up about her experience with miscarriage.

In this very vulnerable episode, Stephanie shares her story about her two miscarriages. She shares what her body went through and also how hard it really was. But she talks about how her strength came from sharing her story more. Stephanie believes that miscarriage needs to be talked about for the mental health of the mom. She breaks down everytime she hears about someone who has a miscarriage because it takes her back to her experience and she hates that anyone else has to feel and go through that. I appreciate Stephanie’s bravery and strength. Her willingness to share will hopefully continue to help moms out there who have had a miscarriage.

Episode 67: Loving Ourselves More as a Mom and as a Person Feb 03, 2021

I had some time recently to read about my younger mom years.

I have always liked to journal, but since being married and especially after having kids, I just didn’t do it as much. But the little I did write, I am grateful I did!

I was reminded of some things that were really important to me when it came to be a home. Honestly, some things I had forgot. And I thought..I can still change and be a better mom, but I am also doing better than I thought.

In this episode, I just wanted to remind you that you are doing a great job. That you are important and what you do it important too. I think it’s important that we aren’t so hard on ourselves as a mom and as a person. Being negative in our heads can come out sometimes. We are just too dang hard on ourselves.

So in the season of love, I want you to remember to love yourself. As a mom and as an individual person.

I would love for you to write for yourself on a paper that you feel really confident in as a mom TODAY. You’re doing better than you think.

I hope this episode gives you some motivation as we start a new year and to remember that there is no perfect way to do motherhood, to survive a pandemic or to reach your goals.

Episode 61: Love Your Mom Body Dec 02, 2020

Do you sometimes get stuck on the negative changes in your body since having kids?

Do you talk unkindly to yourself in your head about the way you look?

I’ve done it. I told you all I would get legit, well here it is.

I don’t like to talk about this topic much because it hits home right now. This hasn’t been my year of good health habits and my confidence in myself has weakened. But you ladies asked for this topic and I didn’t want to shy from a topic that is probably sensitive for a lot of people to talk about. Legit motherhood is all about opening up about those real and raw parts of motherhood that are hard, but needed to be talked about.

This episode gives you some new insight into how you can look at your body in a more positive way. I give you some new mindset phrases to tell yourself and read an amazing quote from a recent Instagram post I saw from @comefollowmedaily. It’s not easy to change our minds about ourselves, but it can be done. You can change the way you see yourself in all its stages.

Our bodies change after having kids. It’s part of the evolve of our motherhood. So why are we so hard on ourselves? I hope this episode helps remind you of your beauty and worth outside of a look or numbers. I think you are beautiful. Believe it yourself.

2020 has been hard on moms in a LOT of ways...but one thing for sure is that the mom isolation we normally feel...felt even more isolating this year. I’ve been there! I haven’t felt this isolated since the newborn stages. In this episode, I talk about mom isolation and why we sometimes feel that way. I also talk about how we can overcome some of those feelings and how we can better support each other! We all need that mom support in some way.

Do you ever feel so overwhelmed by your responsibilities as a mom, you just want to getaway for a bit? Or maybe you are constantly wanting to get away because your life is just too much?

This episode is so inspiring and Suzanna has the most peaceful calming voice I’ve ever heard! Haha Suzanna Haltern comes on the podcast to talk about how we can truly create a life that we don’t want to escape from. I found this topic fascinating because I won’t lie, sometimes I feel this way and I hate that.

She talks about how a lot of our healing affects how we view and live our lives. If we don’t take care of ourselves, it’s hard to take care of others, especially those in our family. Episode 57: The Hope in Healing and Getting Rid of the Stigma Around Mental Illness with Sine Bentley Oct 21, 2020

Sine recently created a blog post about her experience with depression and anxiety during her pregnancies. I loved her post so much and her openness that I wanted to get her on the podcast. She talks about how she found hope in a dark time and what helped her, but that ultimately everyone’s experience is different. She hopes that sharing her experience lets other mom’s know that they are not alone if they have gone through this. She also hopes that opening up about her experience will help those who may not struggle with mental illness know how to support their loved ones who do struggle. Her strength and realness is inspiring. If you are suffering with any form of mental illness, please ask for help. You don’t have to do this alone.

Sine owns and runs a custom watercolor art business, Sine Bentley Art. Reading was her only hobby for most of her life. She has since ventured into other things, it took a while. She really loves creating in any capacity, listening to podcasts, working out at the gym without her kids haha, travel, hiking, and connecting with people.

Episode 42: Real Talk about Women’s Pelvic Health and Physical Therapy with Jenny LaCross Jun 24, 2020

Have you ever had physical therapy after giving birth? If your answer is no, you aren’t alone. It’s not very common and very few women think or are offered or advised to have physical therapy after giving birth. In this interview, Jenny LaCross, a board certified Women’s Health Physical Therapist and who specializes in pelvic health in women, breaks down a lot of the realities of the women’s anatomy and why pelvic health and physical therapy is so important, especially after giving birth. She gives great tips and information that I wish I would have known sooner! Take a listen to learn more about what you can do now to help with your pelvic health!

Her research interest is in the relationship between the hip and pelvic floor in active females. She has completed training in rehabilitative dry needling and myofascial decompression. Jenny values collaborative patient care and desires to educate as many people as possible about this specialty.

Jenny is a St. Louis native currently residing in Stillwater Oklahoma, received her B.S. in Kinesiology-Athletic Training from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 2011 and her doctorate of physical therapy from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2014. She received her Board Specialty Certification in Women’s Health Physical Therapy in 2016 from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. She then completed Texas Woman’s University’s post-professional certificate program in Women’s Health Physical Therapy in May 2018 and is currently working on her PhD at Texas Woman’s University.

One way we can do that is through understanding how to explain, support and help our kids cope during medical experiences. In this episode I chat with Kara Kimball, certified Child Life Specialist, who gives some great tips on taking kids to the doctor, helping your kids through COVID and so much other great advice!

Kara reminds us, “Remember that the WHY is most important when talking about going to the doctor. Don’t just tell them what is going to happen, but what it’s going to do for your child to help them.”

Kara, a Utah native, is a certified child life specialist with a BS in Family Life with an emphasis in Human Development. She worked at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in several different departments before moving to California and deciding to stay home with her three young children. Kara started Child Life Saver to empower parents to help their kids cope during medical experiences.

She talks a lot about where her family was at the time it all started and how she started recognizing signs that she may need to do something about it. She's very open about what depression looked like for her and the things she did to help her get in a better place.

Episode 18: Making Time for Your Hobbies Nov 06, 2019

I love music! I love writing, playing the piano and singing. It's one of my joys and passions. After having kids...I certainly feel like I lost myself and didn't have time to do the thing I loved so much. As the years have gone by, and I now have two kids, in order to do the things I love, I have to MAKE the time.

You want the simple advice on how to have time for your hobby, you have to change your thoughts and you have to MAKE the time. And you can do it! Don't be afraid to ask for some help to do the things that you love. You deserve it mama! So take a listen to learn how to change your thoughts and how you can make your hobby a priority again.

Episode 17: The Powerful Light in the Darkness of Postpartum Depression and Anxiety with Jane Selman Oct 30, 2019

In this episode of THIS is Legit Motherhood...I got to talk with my friend Jane about her experience of going to a psych ward after both deliveries of her babies. She talks about the traumatic experience, but also how it helped her cope and move forward with dealing with her postpartum depression and anxiety.

Jane talks about how some people who haven't experienced issues with mental illness don't realize that depression can happen to anyone, even if you have a seemingly perfect life and family support. She also discusses things she wish she would see change in regards to helping moms post delivery such as longer hospital stays for moms and earlier check ups for the most post birth.

She gets real about the symptoms and signs if you may be struggling with either of these mental illnesses and how you find your support and help. This episode really opens up to what some women go through and how we can better support and help moms after they have their babies.

Episode 16: Mom bun, sweat pants and Netflix: Legit Mom Survival Mode Oct 23, 2019

The chiropractor told me to rest and not pick up my two year old...and my first thoughts were....how in the world am I going to survive??⁠

I recently had a month and a half of constant unexpected family emergencies, injuries, and illnesses and I wondered how in the world we were surviving. And some of those days...I had to lay on the couch and rest and put on the TV. I went into "survival mode"!⁠

In this episode of THIS is Legit Motherhood, I get real with you about those days we have that are just hard and we go into mom survival mode! I feel like there are 3 different types of survival mode:⁠

1) Pregnancy/newborn survival mode⁠

2) Unexpected life survival mode⁠

3) Day to day survival mode⁠

Mamas you aren't alone when you feel like your house is a mess and you haven't put make up on this week because of a sick kid or an unexpected family emergency. IT'S OK! Is everyone alive and breathing and fed and dressed? Then you're good! haha⁠

Episode 15: One Mama, Two Different Breastfeeding Experiences with Emily Mayfield Oct 16, 2019

In this episode, my friend Emily talks about her two very different experiences with breastfeeding. She opens up about the beautiful part every mom anticipates, but also how breastfeeding was hard when she realized she was struggle with D-MER (Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex). Some key points brought up in the episode:

Emily shares the different experiences she had between her first and second child with breastfeeding
What D-MER is, how to recognize it, and to not be afraid to ask for help
Why having a support system is important when you are post baby and your hormones are all over the place.

Emily is originally from Plano, Texas. She and her husband moved to Redlands, California in 2011. They have an 8 year old girl, Claire, an almost five year old boy, Max, and another girl due in January 2020! Emily graduated from California Baptist University with a BA in English, and she is currently a stay at home mom.

Episode 14: How to Have a Confident Birth Experience with Megan Hamzawi Oct 09, 2019

Megan and her husband high-fived just minutes after their first child was born, and shortly after that, they shared a victory slice of birthday cake. Since then, her enthusiasm and passion for the childbirth process has only grown, and with it, her desire to advocate for improved maternity care nationwide.

In addition to her work as a childbirth educator and birth doula, Megan is also a creative mother of two inquisitive children and the wife of a perpetually stressed PhD student.

In this episode, Megan gets real with us about labor and delivery and what needs to change and how you can go into your birth more confidently!

Episode 11: In this episode, I get to chat with personal wardrobe stylist Ilyssa Herrington. Ilyssa focuses on body positivity and finding your authentic style. She has a love of all things design and went to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in LA, which is basically the Harvard of fashion schools. She has worked as a celebrity and editorial stylist, but she found her passion, helping real women with styling while working at Anthropologie. Two years ago, she recovered from almost a decade of battling with her health and decided to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams. Now, she works with women who desire to have a seamless wardrobe that represents who they truly are. She helps women to find their confidence by defining their style and dressing authentically! Its part styling, part body acceptance work. Very much a holistic approach to style and confidence!

I am opening up a lot about my health journey! I haven't shared my experience with my health and body in a long time. But I felt like it was time to open up about it again because it's something that has been a huge part of my life since having both of my kids.

I take you back to middle school and how my thoughts around my body and confidence started young and have evolved and changed a lot over the years.

I chat about when I found out I had PCOS, my body changing after kids, and learning how to love myself no matter the size of my jeans.

Episode 9: In this episode, I had the pleasure of bringing one of my long time friends from high school on the show. Ashton Roberts is an Office Manager in Los Angeles and also a freelance artist. She has an eight year old son who she says is "just amazing". She loves to keep up with the news and social issues, and enjoy most anything on HBO. She loves good food and cooking, but also down to eat fast food any time. She is also a huge book lover; the first thing you see in her apartment are bookshelves and books piled up all over the place.

Episode 8: Legit Self Care: Taking Care of Yourself is NOT Selfish Aug 21, 2019

Self care is a hot topic buzzing around social media and today I wanted to get legit about what that means, especially in terms of being a mom. You are not being selfish if you need to take time for yourself.

Self care can be fun like going out for a girls night or going to get your nails done, but self care is also and most importantly...taking care of your mental and physical health. In order to be the best mom you can be, you have to take care of yourself too. Don't be afraid to make it happen! You will have to prioritize it and make time. But you are important and worth it enough to make it a priority.

I share some of my experiences over the years on how I made self care a priority and also some phases, with little babies and supporting my husband through school, where making time for myself was super hard. But I CHOSE to make it happen because self care is important.

Episode 6: Faith in Your Everyday Mom Life with Maddie Goldie Aug 07, 2019

In this episode, my childhood friend, Maddie, shares stories and thoughts on how she has needed faith in her life as a new mom.

Maddie Goldie is Southern-raised and a lover of flowers, ice cream, and sushi. She is married to a half-Scottish Georgia boy, and they have a son and a daughter who are the lights of their lives. Before her life as a stay-at-home mom, she worked in Human Resources, first at a start-up and then for an university IT office. She enjoys music/singing, ultimate frisbee, reading, cooking, and weight lifting. She has moved and traveled often, internationally and domestically, and she has found that the best part of those experiences is that kind people are found anywhere one goes.

Some highlights from Maddie's interview:

Maddie talks a lot about her moves across country and how her and her husband had to have a lot of faith in making these big decisions.
Maddie quotes: “Fair isn’t about things being equal, fair is about doing right by those you love”
She also says, "Nurturing my own personal faith helps me realize I am not in complete control of everything."
Her grandma gave her advice to “always have a quiet moment each day”
Faith and fear cannot coexist. Fear will take over your faith. However, faith and struggle can coexist. You can still have faith even when things are hard. Don’t give up hope.

Episode 5: A Day in the Life of Mom of 3 with Brittanie Smith Aug 01, 2019

In this episode, my good friend Brittanie takes us from breakfast to bedtime with three kids. She truly shows us the day in the life of motherhood.

Brittanie Smith is a stay at home more of three beautiful children. She has an almost 5 year old, an almost 3 year old (both have August birthdays..wish her luck she says!) and a 2 month old. She has a Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University in Communication Disorders. Before her life as a mom, she worked as the Assistant to the Director of an Autism program which she helped start. She has four years of experience teaching children with Autism and working with their parents. She loves gardening, learning about plants, watching shows (don’t we all), and going on dates with her husband. Her favorite thing about being a mom is morning family snuggles and the funny things that kids say.

Some highlights from Brittanie's interview:

In order to feel accomplished everyday, she tries to reach 3 out of 5 things that make her feel successful everyday. She challenges you to think of what your 5 successes may be. (small wins matter as a mom!)
Brittanie says, "It’s easy to overlook the wonderful parts of motherhood if we focus on the chaos of the rest of the day"
Another takeaway from the episode was, "You are not alone. Don’t compare yourself to previous you, future you or others."

Episode 4: Being More than Mommy is OK with Julie Ciardi Aug 01, 2019

In this episode I had the privilege to interview my client and friend, Julie Ciardi. Julie is a life and business coach who helps mamas remember that they are more than a mommy. She left a corporate vice president of marketing job of 16 years leading over 200 people, to start not just 1, but 2 businesses and a network marketing business. She caught the entrepreneurship bug and has never been happier! She is married and the mother to 3 children.

Here are a couple highlights in this interview with Julie:

Julie says, "You can’t be there for your kids the way they need you if you don’t take care of yourself"
Julie comments that if you are a young mom start making time for yourself now. Make it a habit. Being more than mommy can be an example to your kids.
"You have permission to be more than mommy"
Kids will one day grow up and leave the nest. Be sure to have things outside of being a mom so when they leave you are still YOU.

This is Legit Motherhood is all about the real and raw things in motherhood. This podcast will open up the world of motherhood to those who are soon to be moms, new moms, and even seasoned moms to all the things that make motherhood hard and chaotic, but also the freakin’ awesome and beautiful parts of having kids.

I wanted to start this podcast because I wanted to create a place for moms to remember who they are, what they are doing and capable of, and know that you are absolutely not alone in this journey.
