Cannabis Is Good For You Oct 01, 2021
    Show notes

Cannabis does what I need it to do and I don’t need much else, but I had to do some research to settle my fears about certain things, including examining who gets to be the cool, funny stoner and who gets to be labeled criminals and degenerates. That is why I’m talking to Laura OG, founder of SMKBRK, who is advocating for equity and diversity within the cannabis industry and hopes to normalize seeing women in all discussions about weed.

    Indulgence

Nichole recommends a return to jewelry!

    Guest

Laura OG is a cannabis cultivator, educator, and consultant dedicated to teaching women how to incorporate cannabis into their everyday life through conscious consumption and self-care practices. She is an advocate for equity and diversity within the cannabis industry and founded SMK BRK in the pursuit of normalizing conversations between women and cannabis through storytelling, design, events, and music curation. She lobbies for home grows and believes everyone should have the knowledge and space to grow their own medicine.

Running Is Good For You Sep 03, 2021
    Show notes

I know so many people who swear by running, but I cannot understand it. I have to run... outside... in front of other people? I just don’t get it. That is why I have writer and journalist Lyz Lenz on the show today to help demystify the whole thing of running and how it has become an essential part of her life.

Content Warning: this conversation touches on topics of sexual assault and miscarrage.

    Indulgence

Nichole recommends stepping outside of your comfort pop culture zones, like watching Summertime on Netflix.

    Guest

Lyz Lenz is a writer, author, and whiskey drinker living in Iowa. Her book God Land was published in 2019, through Indiana University Press. Her second book Belabored, was published in 2020 by Bold Type Books. Lyz’s essay “All the Angry Women” was also included in the anthology Not that Bad edited by Roxane Gay. She writes a regular newsletter, Men Yell At Me, where she explores the intersection of politics and our bodies in red state America.

Manicures Are Good For You Aug 20, 2021
    Show notes

I love getting my nails done. I love matching a nail color to my mood or sending out a secret message only I can decode with my nail color. And I’m frequently clicking though nail design hashtags to marvel at manicures from around the world. So when I saw Cate Young posting pictures of her manicures and the polishes she uses, I was like “Here are my people!”

    Indulgence

Nichole recommends dressing up for yourself!

Pre-order Nichole’s book Sometimes I Trip on How Happy We Could Be and read her article about her mom’s manicures.

    Guest

Cate Young is an associate podcast producer and freelance writer from Trinidad and Tobago and the creator of BattyMamzelle; a feminist pop culture blog focused on film, television, music and critical commentary on media representation. Her writing has dealt particularly with the intersection of race, gender and sexuality and her focus is on media representation, its wider influence, and its power to changed social attitudes.

Sewing Is Good for You Aug 06, 2021
    Show notes

I will admit, I am not fashionable at all. How do people know how to mix colors? And do they avoid their clothes wearing them? So when I saw that Eleanor Kagan, podcaster and fashion expert, was sewing her own clothes, I knew I had to ask how it all came together.

    Indulgence

    Nichole recommends microblading!

Pre-order Nichole’s book Sometimes I Trip on How Happy We Could Be!

    Guest

Eleanor Kagan is a producer, audio-maker, and storyteller who strives to build communities with her work, whether it's through audio (podcasts, radio), live events, or public enthusiasm. She's produced several critically-acclaimed podcasts including Another Round, See Something Say Something, and Thirst Aid Kit, as well as the documentary series Julie (which explores the process of dying) and Welcome To Your Fantasy (which explores the history of Chippendales). She spends some of her time sewing clothes, looking at birds, and correcting people who confuse her with the Supreme Court Justice.

Resin Work Is Good for You Jul 23, 2021
    Show notes

Our guest TK Dutes embodies the feelings you have when you pick up something that we talk about on this show: it’s a new experience, but she has the patience and vision to keep working at it until she’s satisfied. And for any of her hobbies, like creating resin crafts or making ice cream, she attacks it with that philosophy.

    Indulgence

Nichole recommends checking on the money in your bank account!

Pre-order Nichole’s book Sometimes I Trip on How Happy We Could Be!

    Guest

Keisha "TK" Dutes is a nurse turned audio producer and currently an Executive Producer at Spoke Media and podcast talent for NPR’s Life Kit. Karaoke Is Good for You Jul 09, 2021
    Show notes

I can’t carry a tune in a bucket with a lid on it, but I love singing. At home. In private. Where no one but my neighbors can hear how off-key I am. That is not the case for Ed Cunard, a certified karaoke enthusiast. He loves singing in front of scrolling lyrics, strong drinks, and smiling customers. I’m gonna find out why.

    Indulgence

Nichole recommend wearing sexy lingerie just for you (Love, Vera, Sock Dreams, The Lingerie Addict)

    Guest

Ed Cunard is the cohost of "The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly)," a podcast devoted to karaoke and the people involved in and obsessed with it. When not singing in bars, he works as Director of Operations for a sales company. He lives in the middle of nowhere with ten cats and two dogs.

Collage Is Good for You Jun 11, 2021
    Show notes

It took me a while to learn to be present and not borrow worry. The universe does not want to punish me, it wants me to be happy and enjoy its gifts. I learned that from Cynthia, one of my good friends from back home. She literally takes what’s around her and turns them into incredible collages. If you’ve got a stack of magazines you keep saying you’ll do something with, maybe this episode is for you.

We’re taking a break in place of the next episode, so Episode 11 will come out on July 9th!

    Indulgence

Cynthia recommends going out without underwear.

    Guest

Cynthia C Harris, MPH is a writer, healing artist, conjure woman and proud Southerner. She has trained several hundred individuals through community sponsored gatherings, collaborations, conferences and arts festivals. Her original works: Phrases of Womanhood, Why Won’t She Leave?, and How to Catch a Flying Woman, explore issues of gender, Southern identity, women’s intimacy, spirituality, community and African heritage. Her latest work, The Calling is in the Body, scheduled to debut in 2021, focuses on the life of Deidre Williams, the first Black person to become an HIV positive advocate in Tennessee.

Dominance Is Good for You May 28, 2021
    Show notes

In a previous episode, we learned about the pleasure of submission so it’s only right to learn about dominance as well. My conversation with Venus Cuffs, Domme and BDSM consultant, gets a little heavy as we discuss overcoming challenges like racial trauma and lack of safe mentors to find the best way to connect to your inner dominant. She also highlights some major benefits of being a Domme like always having a clean home, which is something I can totally get with.

    Indulgence

Nichole recommends weird smells and James Joyce’s eproctophilic love letters!

    Guest

Venus Cuffs is a Domme, BDSM educator, HBIC, nightlife personality and nightlife producer. This “Nightlife Mogul” (Paper Magazine 2019) has taken nightlife spaces and transformed them in NYC. Her events/classes are consent driven and welcoming to all.

I’m talking with the fantastic Bim Adewunmi all about her experience of learning how to bake bread. I need you to know: this won’t be your typical conversation about kneading dough. Bim helps me realize that learning this kind of skill is life-affirming in more ways than one. What happens when you decide to follow a trend and find lasting joy? And will this skill help you in a zombie apocalypse?
