The year that was 2023 has come to a close, so the gang decide to reflect back on the year that! Episode 297 - Zelda Dungeon’s Best Zelda Ever 2023 List in Review! Dec 18, 2023

Show notes

It's the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas - Zelda Dungeon's Best Zelda Ever list is out, and as always, we're breaking it down game by game, entry by entry to see what we agreed with, disagreed with, were shocked by, and what pleasantly surprised us! The biggest questions this year were what kind of impact Tears of the Kingdom would have on the list, and if it could possibly dethrone Ocarina of Time as the list's champion after a dominant five year stretch! Plus, how does Breath of the Wild fare now that its sequel is out and has made it arguably obsolete? Plus, Andy reflects on his time as Editor-in-Chief, putting together the first couple BZE lists and how the standings have evolved over the years! Make sure you're checking out the list for yourself here!

Just a friendly FYI - THERE'S NO EPISODE NEXT WEEK, since, you know, Christmas, but we'll be back on January 1st to kick off 2024 in style! From everyone at the Zelda Cast and Zelda Dungeon, Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and have a safe New Years!

Show notes

The 2023 Game Awards have come and gone, and just like in years past, we've watched it so you don't have too! We break down Tears of the Kingdom's performance and debate whether it deserved to win GOTY or not, as well as give our thoughts on some of the other winners and the format of Geoff Keighly's extravaganza as a whole! We also talk about what announcements got us excited and what games we're looking forward to! PLUS, we break down series producer Eiji Aonuma's recent thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom's timeline placement, if he thinks that players will ever return to that version of Hyrule, and what the future of the Ultrahand mechanic is!

This is a fun and breezy ride, so come hang out with us and let us know what you though of this years awards!

Episode 295 - Definitively Ranking Tears of the Kingdom! Dec 04, 2023

Show notes

After a long, long layoff, Definitive Ranking returns to the Zelda Cast, and what better game to usher its return than the most recent entry into the series: Tears of the Kingdom! We're going through ten critical categories that make up the ingredients to a Zelda game - world, story, pacing, art style, dungeons, bosses/enemies, items, gameplay, extras, and music - and assigning them each a score to see where Tears ranks among the hallowed halls of greatest Zelda games of all time! Some of the scores will be no-brainers, while others might leave you scratching your head, so come along and play with us, and of course, be sure to share what you think!

All this, PLUS a Skyward Sword puzzle update, Ganondorf and Zelda amiibo, and a big thanks to everyone who had us in their Spotify Wrapped!

Episode 294 - If Tears of the Kingdom Had DLC, What Would We Have Wanted To See? Nov 27, 2023

Show notes

Way back when the sad news that Tears of the Kingdom would not be getting any DLC, we had cooked up a few ideas for what we wanted to see in any future updates, and rather than letting those ideas go to waste, were today to talk about what we would have wanted to see if the decision to move on from Tears' Hyrule hadn't been made! From the learning the origins of the mysterious three dragons and introducing some classic goddess characters to having intricate caves holding secrets from the Sages of old, we pitch our story ideas, PLUS we detail what gameplay modes we think might have come back and which costumes from previous Zelda games we'd want to see included as outfits!

All this, PLUS some quick wrestling talk, a Thanksgiving wrapup, and Andy's epiphany about Twilight (the books, not the Zelda game!)

Episode 293 - Zelda’s Percentages Returns! Nov 20, 2023

Show notes

After a lengthy hiatus, everyone's favorite Zelda Cast segment, Zelda's Percentages, returns! The premise is very simple: we make a hypothetical statement and assign a percentage on the likelihood of that statement coming true! This week, we had a twist on the concept in that we asked YOU the listener to submit your own statements, and you delivered in droves! We touch on everything from the next 3D Zelda game, potential remakes, the Zelda movie and what the direction of casting will be, what kind of capabilities the Switch 2 might have, and so much more!

All this, PLUS Al gives her thoughts on the upcoming Zelda movie and we talk about Tears of the Kingdom's chances at wining GOTY at the Game Awards! Come hang out with us!

Show notes

After Nintendo dropped the tweet heard 'round the world ("This is Miyamoto") confirming that a live-action Legend of Zelda movie was due to enter pre-production soon, the Zelda community has been ablaze with all sorts of reactions, positive and negative, discussing what fans want from this adaptation. Filling in for Al this week is Virtual Theater's Gooey Fame, and the gang discuss a whole bevy of topics, including: our initial thoughts at the announcement; if we prefer live-action to animation; what the worst case and best case scenarios would be; if certain casting choices making the rumor mill could be credible or not; our thoughts on both the director and writer's other projects; what basic elements from the games should be included; our ideas on why this movie won't adapt one particular game; the future of the franchise, and so much more!

If you like Andy and Goo talking movies, check out their other podcast Virtual Theater, a podcast about video game movies and the stories that shape them!

Episode 291 - The Future of Ganondorf, Zelda LEGO, Underutilized Mechanics and More Daily Debates Answered Nov 06, 2023

Show notes

We've got an action-packed episode this week, as we're relying on our amazing Zelda Dungeon Writing Team's Daily Debates to power the show. We're answering a bunch of different debate questions including: Does the new Animal Crossing LEGO make Zelda LEGO more likely to come? Should Nintendo produce their own Halloween merch? Should the series ever retire Ganondorf? Should the next 3D Zelda game take place in a land other than Hyrule? What would a Pokemon/Zelda crossover look like? What can Zelda learn from Super Mario Bros. Wonder? What's the most disappointing final boss in the series? Which game didn't capitalize on its mechanics? Was Nintendo "lazy" bringing back Korok seeds?

All this and so much more, PLUS Zelda's Percentages returns next week, so go to the tweet here and get your question added to the show!

Show notes

It's finally here! Weeks ago we asked you for YOUR spicy Zelda takes, and you delivered! This week, we're reacting to all the opinions shared and discussing whether we personally agree with them and if they go against the conventional norm of the Zelda community to dictate the level of spice! We're discussing things like Ocarina of Time being a mid-level Zelda game, Tri Force Heroes being an exceptional single-player experience, Tears of the Kingdom telling an amazing story in the worst way possible, The Wind Waker's OST being average, water-themed dungeons being the bet in the series, and so much more!

All this, PLUS we're discussing Halloween and the state of trick-or-treating in 2023! Come play along with us and let us know what you agree or disagree with!
