    The Zack Arnold Podcast

If you want to make things that matter, I want to help you. And if you've built your entire career around your creativity, you too may be asking: Is there a future for us? Or is it game over? I don't know what the future holds, but I do promise few are more dedicated to helping us find the answers than I am.

You're in the right place if:

    • You live to create. Your work isn't just a job but an expression of who you are.
    • You create to live. Your livelihood depends on your creativity.
    • You love making cool shit.

Whether you identify as introverted or neurodivergent (or both, like me)…

No matter if you're a misfit, a rebel, an outlier, or a troublemaker…

If you've been called weird, nerdy, dorky, quirky, or awkward…

Or if you’re an over-thinker, procrastinator, or perfectionist…

    You are welcome here. 😊

Come join me as I have honest, authentic, and candid conversations with NYT bestselling authors, Oscar and Emmy winners, experts across many different industries, and ordinary humans achieving extraordinary things.

My guests today are Bridget Hilton and Joe Huff who are co-authors of the best selling book, Experiential Billionaire: Build a Life Rich in Experiences and Die With No Regrets. Before you dismiss this episode thinking you're too busy making a living and you don't have the resources to do the things you want to do, my conversation with Bridget and Joe delved into exactly that fear:

"People get scared because it's easier to wrap their heads around what they have to lose than what they have to gain." - Bridget Hilton

Bridget and Joe surveyed over 20,000 people from all walks of life and the result is eye opening. People's regrets are very similar no matter their age and income status and in our conversation, we talk about why people often put things that matter in the fictional world of 'someday.' But more importantly, we talk about the exercises described in their book that can help you have that sense of urgency to start doing the things you love.

If you have a bucket list that you've stowed away in that fictional world of 'someday' because you think you don't have the time or resources to do them or they're simply too big to make them happen, this episode is for you. Our conversation will walk you through the actions you can take to start building a life rich in experiences with no regrets.

My guest today is Turner Osler, who is a trauma surgeon turned epidemiologist, now turned inventor and entrepreneur. Turner has the usual trauma surgeon backstory, from medical school to residency to fellowship as a trauma surgeon, with over 300 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He made a transition to becoming an entrepreneur to build the company, QOR360, after he made the transition to research epidemiologist which inspired him to solve the problem of sitting when he found himself at a desk for many hours for the first time in his career.

If you're a long-time listener to my podcast, you know how I love to recommend products that promote an active workstation. The chairs that Turner designs really caught my attention because he's not trying to make a better chair; he’s trying to change your relationship to sitting. Turner reveals that standing is as detrimental to your health as sitting still, and we delve into the human body's natural physiology of sitting, standing, and movement. You’ll learn what active sitting is and about the physical and mental benefits it will give you. Turner's company is so passionate about their chairs that they've decided to give away the design for one of their models called the 'button chair' for free so that kids can reap the benefits and eliminate sitting disease for future generations to come.

Turner Osler has the usual academic trauma surgeon back story: BA Neurobiology (Princeton), MD (Medical College of Virginia), surgical residency (Columbia, Harvard), fellowship (University of New Mexico) and then 20 years an academic trauma surgeon (University of Vermont) with over 300 peer reviewed papers and book chapters.

But then Turner went off scrip, got a masters in Biostatistics and an NIH grant and abandoned the operating room to study trauma epidemiology. Somewhere in the last decade he became obsessed with the problems that come from sitting too much, and especially sitting badly. Because no one else was doing it, Turner and some friends created a company (QOR360.com) to make active sitting chairs affordable enough for everyone to have one. Turner lives in Vermont with his wife, son and dog who have been surprisingly tolerant of his mania and are being gradually drawn into the madness. Except the dog.

Today's guest is award-winning film editor, Sarah Broshar who’s short list of credits includes The Fabelmans, West Side Story, Ready Player One, and The Post. All of which were projects that had her working with Hollywood legends Steven Spielberg and editor, Michael Kahn. Looking at her credits in her IMDb profile, you might think, "She must have gotten really lucky," but as Sarah shares in our conversation, her 'luck' mostly comes from consistently solving problems and providing value over and over.

As we go deeper into her story, Sarah shares that not only is she 'lucky' to be working with legends, she's also working with people who value family and boundaries which is not very common to high demand projects (or the industry, in general). Getting your foot in high-profile projects and working with people who will respect your boundaries is already challenging enough but as we find out in Sarah's story, she paved her own way to get to where she is now. Sarah's inspiring story reveals that creating your own 'luck' is the key to working with the best and setting boundaries is the key to having a life outside of work.

My guest today is Paul Rogers who is an award-winning film editor. His work on Everything, Everywhere All At Once recently won him an Oscar. But the epicenter of our conversation today is the speech he gave backstage after the awards:

"There's a problem in our industry that the more you kill yourself for a movie, the braver you are and that's bullsh*t. We can do our jobs and we can live our lives and the more fully we are able to live our lives and the more humanely we treat ourselves and the people around us the better we can do our jobs."

If you’ve been a long time listener to my podcast, no doubt that you’ll recognize this as something that I’ve been advocating for years already. What’s interesting is that Paul did not plan on saying this in his speech, but instead, it came out of nowhere while trying to refocus from all the awards commotion. My intuition tells me that it’s deeply connected to his values as a film editor, as a human being and how he defines work-life balance.

In this conversation, we talk about boundaries, what type of projects he would do and why, and how winning an Oscar has changed his life.
