    Film Team Talks: Last Call

    "Last Call" follows a suicidal alcoholic on the anniversary of his son’s death. When he attempts to call a crisis hotline, a misdial connects him with a single mother working as the night janitor at a local community college. The split screen feature showcases both characters in real-time as they navigate a life-changing conversation.

    The film was shot with two camera crews in different parts of the city at the same time. The actors were acting over the phone with one another in order to create the film in a true single take. The film's score was recorded live in a single take also to preserve the vision of an authentic single take experience. Come learn what it took to pull off such a feat!

    Letia Solomon and her team for The Cypher were selected to premiere in the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival April 15-26, 2020. When the festival was postponed due to the global pandemic, their dreams were stalled, but that didn’t stop them. Tribeca turned to an exclusive online format and her team sought a public relations firm to get more eyes on the film. In true independent film spirit, they turned the exclusive platform around and was able to gain some success during such an uncertain time. Since then, The Cypher has been featured in CAA Moebius's Short Showcase and selected in the American Black Film Festival's HBO Competition in August 2020.

    SENTA MOSES MIKAN has been in show business since she was six months old. She kicked off her career in Chicago with a diaper commercial showcasing her naked bottom. At seven, she landed the role of “Molly” in the National Touring Company of Annie. While in high school, Senta co-starred in the blockbuster films, HomeAlone and HomeAlone2, as “Tracy McCallister”. Senta has guest starred on numerous shows including Faking It, Jane The Virgin, NCIS, Greek, Castle, The Mentalist, Rizzoli & Isles, and Everybody Loves Raymond. She’s incredibly proud of her work on the Emmy Award winning Beakman’s World, as “Phoebe” the lab assistant, which is currently in syndication all over the world. Senta has appeared in the feature films Ten Years Later, Can’t Hardly Wait, D.C. Cab, and Boiler Maker,just to name a few. Despite her continuous work, most of Senta’s fans know her best from My So-Called Life, in which she played “Delia Fisher”.     Kate Rees Daviesis a director with experience in narrative features, short films, music videos, and commercials. She is also an instructor of directing at UCLA and recently selected as one of 6 directors for the "Future Women of TV" Initiative.

Some topics include: how to work with actors even under the gun, how to make the most out of the time you have on set to get the best picture, and how preparation and your intuition are the keys to it all. If you are thinking about shooting your passion project in a short amount of time, this is a must listen to before you even start to prep.

    Kate Rees Davies is an award-winning director with experience in narrative features, short films, music videos and commercials. A directing graduate of UCLA, her love and enthusiasm of the craft of filmmaking is infectious. Six of her shorts have screened at Cannes. Kate was one of the first independent filmmakers to shoot on 4K with the Sony F65 and as a result, has had her work distributed on the Sony 4K TV. Kate wants to transition into directing for Television and recently shadowed Jill Solloway on Transparent Season 5. Kate came to LA to eventually direct Marvel Features and her ultimate goal is to direct a James Bond Movie. She currently teaches directing at UCLA.

    016: Using Social Media to Grow Your Network Beyond Your Current Circle (Guest: Sarah J. Eagen) Apr 21, 2020

    Sarah J. Eagen is a SAG-AFTRA Actor and Pre-WGA Writer who was recently selected by Blackmagic Collective as one of the “Future Women of TV.” She has successfully gotten meetings with TV writers, connected with Showrunners, and even booked a role on a major TV show all through networking.

    Host Jenn Page and Sarah dive in how to grow your network by blind reaching out to people you don’t know. She gives advice on how to build a relationship that is genuine, when and how to ask for the coffee meet up, and why none of it should feel scary. She also talks about scriptwriting and how to be an original voice, as well as how to approach scripts from both the actor and writer POVs.

    A writer and actor focused on television, Sarah J. Eagen was a head writer on the new sci fi audio drama anthology "The Veil" from Voxx Studios, writing 4 episodes with unique settings and characters in season 1. She was hired to write a holiday feature film in the fall of 2019, and she co-wrote, produced, and acted in the short Soledad, starring Frankie Loyal of “Mayans, M.C.,” which screened on the Disney lot at the end of 2018.
    In 2019, Eagen’s pilots were chosen as a Humanitas NEW VOICES semifinalist, a top ten finalist in the Stage 32 TV Writing Contest, and two pilots were 2nd rounders at the Austin Film Festival. She was also a semifinalist (top 6%) for the 2019 NBC Writers on the Verge program with her Good Girls spec. Previously, her pilots have placed as semifinalists in the 2018 NYTVF Script Comp, as a finalist for the WAN Writers Workshop in 2019, and for the Women in Film/Blacklist Episodic lab in the fall of 2017. One of her parody scripts was performed live by the Parsec award-nominated podcast Once Upon a Wine in 2018. She is a monthly contributor to the online journal Ms in the Biz, where she writes about breaking into writing for TV with advice and resources for writers as well as interviewing prominent showrunners.

    As a filmmaker you are always told to be aware of your brand, know your niche, be careful what you say and do, and so on. This week's guest Joy Donnell blows that all up. Host Jenn Page and Joy discuss how being authentically yourself IS your brand. They dive into how to use your humanity to build your personal brand, how to release yourself from the social media hamster wheel, how being authentically you finds your niche audience, and how to lean into the joy even in dark times. Instead of thinking what do I want to get this minute shift your thinking to what do I want to leave in the world.
