Toby Sumpter is a pastor, author, blogger, YouTube star, husband and father, and he articulates the why of beauty, strength, marriage and children, better than anyone I've heard.

Because what are beauty, strength, marriage, and children for? Have you ever thought about it?

I'd understand if not. We often have a sense that these things are intrinsically valuable, in themselves and for the purposes they serve.

But what is that purpose?

When I first encountered this question, the answer felt just out of reach. Then when I got it everything made sense, and I felt I could plant my feet in the blessing of Toby's answer.

He’s also a leading national advocate to end dad deprivation and parental alienation, a consequence of the national divorce industry which is worth tens of billions of dollars annually.

This massive field is incentivized to wreck the American family through the American father.

And Eric’s outspoken approach, Southern drawl, and down-home attitude has helped become a well-recognized personality and advocate for fathers within national political circles in just three years, with hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook and beyond.

MY 50TH INTERVIEW

Douglas Gillette is the co-author of “King, Warrior, Magician, Lover”, an immortal classic of the men’s movement.

He’s also a husband, father, college professor, Jungian analyst, and poet.

I hear his book mentioned weekly because it helps men see their inherent goodness and nobility, in an era dedicated to shaming men for often exaggerated crimes of wickedness.

The mode of thinking it inspired also showed me that I could take core aspects of me and round them out in the hopes of someday becoming a King.

In our conversation we discussed:

How men's work began with the warrior energy and lost contact with it
Sensitive subjects the men's movement avoids
The importance of men separating from the mother, and how to do it without losing touch with the feminine
The power and strength in true humility
Christianity's answer to the origin of human suffering
And finally, some reflections as Douglas looks back on his life, as an elder.

To make a contribution like Douglas has to three generations of men requires authentic care, and genuine love for the masculine experience coupled with profound philosophical and spiritual insight.

Jon Rennie is a former US Navy submarine officer, as well as a business leader, podcast host, and author.

We met on Twitter, where I saw his book “All In the Same Boat” about his time aboard the USS Tennessee and what it taught him about life and business.

I’m new at being a Christian, but I’ve had positive experiences with ayahuasca, sound healing, psychotherapy, and more.

Lucid dreaming, meditation, gnosticism, Hinduism, raw food veganism, microdosing, psychedelics from every letter of the alphabet, a year of living without electricity, and more.

Pastor Doug Wilson is a husband, father, grandfather, author, Youtube star and the leader of the Christ Kirk Christian community in Moscow, Idaho.

He's also a man unafraid to speak the truth in a quiet but firm, compassionate but direct voice, sprinkled with a genuine sense of grandfatherly humor, and the occasional dad joke.

But at the same time, I've discovered he causes friction within the Christian community, apparently for saying things that we all mutter under our breath or say aloud over cigars and whiskey. But he's much more cheerful about them.

CR Wiley is a husband, father, podcast host, pastor of a church outside of Portland, Oregon, and the author of the book “The Household and the War for the Cosmos.”

For me his book was the crystal around which 20 years of thinking about masculinity instantly solidified.

What most men of the Renaissance want is a plot of land, a wife to share our lives with, noble work, children, a God to worship, and to be left alone. It turns out there's a word for that. It's called a household.

And not only does a household have significance for us as men, it has significance for God as well.

The core themes of his book, namely piety, the household, and the cosmos
How the household can rebuild society
Advice for men on how to rebuild their household
Advice for women on how to awaken the building spirit in their men
And finally, his writing process, and his most recent book, "In the House of Tom Bombadil" about the character in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

Many men today aspire to self-sufficiency, which is a noble goal. But Pastor Wiley's restoration of the word household gives the dream of self-sufficiency a purpose, giving us something good, beautiful, and true to fight for.

Curt Storring is a husband, father, men's coach, writer, and host of the Dad.Work podcast.

He writes, “Hi, my name is Curt Storring, and I’m a recovering shitty father. The first few years of fatherhood were hard for me. I was so overwhelmed, angry, and lonely, that it caused chaos in every other part of my life"

"My suffering was so great that I finally had to face the problem head-on and do something about it, or risk losing everything. My marriage, my family, my business… In fact, it got so bad that I began to wonder whether my life was even worth living.”

I don't usually use a man's own words to describe him, but I felt Curt's testimony would hit home for men who know those feelings well.

In our conversation we discussed:

Curt's moving transformation story from shitty father to men's leader
The notion of life artistry
The many blessings of failure
How fitness is a spiritual journey and the death spiral of obesity
And finally, the balance between men bonding through action vs. through dialogue.

CB ROBERTSON | Of Heroes and Men Feb 22, 2022

CB Robertson is an author, husband, father, and autodidactic philosopher. If you don't immediately recognize his name, you might recognize his Instagram handle: Caffeine and Philosophy.

If I'm one type of man, who allows life to interrupt his philosophical pursuits, CB is the other type of man for whom philosophy IS life, or at least a big part of it.

I always admired his clarity of thought even if I was a bit intimidated.

But if I know my audience, you guys like lengthy, in-depth episodes to chew on, and I knew that CB would fit the bill.

In our conversation we discussed:

Why Homer matters, and how the stories of Achilles, Odysseus, and Hector have meaning for us today
Plato's Republic, and why it's easy to miss the subtle message that Plato is trying to communicate
The transcendent hero vs. the family man, and maybe why the distinction isn't so clear

And finally, how shared suffering between men binds us together in our minds, and hearts, as well.
