Episode 230: No One Saw It Coming Mar 31, 2023
    Show notes

Marci Glidden Savage is the CEO of a family-owned packaging supply company. After experiencing the catastrophic impact of suicide twice, Marci emerges as a fierce proponent for eliminating the social stigma attached to mental illness which keeps many individuals battling depression and anxiety from seeking help. Marci lives in Southern California where she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling and endless hours of genealogy research.

Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Marci Glidden Savage

about mission to shed light upon and destigmatize mental health issues and how those who have lost loved ones to suicide can learn to cope in the aftermath.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    • Marci lost her husband of 34 years suicide and no one saw the signs or knew that he was suffering inside.
    • Supporting her children in this time became her #1 priority.
    • Running her own business forced her to continue on through the grief and make sure things continued to run.
    • Marci found love and marriage again, only for it to happen once more.
    • Marci found she had to deal with people’s ideas and opinions of her husbands’ mental health and her ability to see the signs.
    • Some who suffer from anxiety and depression weave it into their very existence just to cope and never work on resolving their feelings or opening up to others.
    • There is a stigma in opening up about deep, depressive thoughts or anxiety. It affects their self-worth.
    • Men aged 55-65 have a higher rate of suicide. Their self-worth often ties into their success and ability to provide for their families. This is often the age they may feel like they have failed at these things.
    • The family is left behind to carry the burden of other’s narratives of what happened. They have to defend and explain, and justify their inability to prevent the death of their loved ones.
    • Her message to others: allow families to grieve as they would for any other death.
    • Personifying death can be a coping mechanism. Turn grief from an emotion into an entity that you can treat accordingly, allowing you to stop holding it inside.

    Show notes

Ariella Shuster, Esq., is a practicing family law attorney on a mission to support people in keeping their dignity and respect intact as they move through separation and divorce. She's a professional life coach, with special expertise in divorce coaching, a mediator, a yoga instructor, a speaker, and mom to a rapidly growing teenage son. Before her roles as a mother and life coach, she was an intrepid world traveler and spent over a decade working in the criminal court system as a public defender in New York City and Seattle, Washington. She remains an avid cook, enthusiastic wine taster, and dabbler in random athletic pursuits.

Ariella lives in Seattle, and she primarily represents people dedicated to divorcing with dignity through Collaborative or other out-of-court divorce processes. She is also available for legal and life coaching and represents compelling clients who would prefer to divorce amicably but don’t have a partner in peace.

Episode 225: Do You Making These Marital Mistakes? Mar 15, 2023
    Show notes

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

Here is what to expect on this week’s show as Rebecca discusses common marital mistakes, and some sound advice from John Gottman:

    • John Gottman’s 4 Horsemen of Divorce: Contempt, Criticism, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling. If any of these 4 are not addressed, your relationship will not likely survive.
    • Don’t expect your partner to be able to read your mind and know what you really want. Vocalize your wishes and needs!
    • Prioritize your marriage. Without a strong marital foundation, all the rest will fall apart.
    • Love your partner the way THEY want to be loved, not the way YOU want to be love. Everyone has their own “love language.”
    • Stop letting your hair down- comfort is wonderful, but make sure to show up for your spouse and give them a reason to choose you every day. Tend your marital garden.
    • Don’t expect your partner to be you. They are not, nor are you them. Respect that you each have different ideas and ways to do things.
    • Stop thinking little things don’t matter. What may seem small to you may not be to your partner. Little things have a way of building up to big things. This goes for the good and the bad.
    • Break the marital pattern. Constantly repeating the same mistakes does not bode well. Marriage is a work in progress and growth is vital.
    • Stop talking and listen! Don’t let your feelings and thoughts override what your partner is trying to tell you.
    • Put yourself in your spouse’s shoes. Having empathy and perspective is vitally important.
    • Protect your marriage from outside influences that do not serve it.
    • Don’t do things you feel need to be a secret from your spouse.
