    35. Interview with Camila Smith, LCSW: Anxiety and the Gut-Brain Connection Sep 23, 2022
    Show notes

Kim and Catherine speak with Camila Smith, LCSW, DHSc, a licensed psychotherapist and self proclaimed anxiety and gut-brain specialist. A troubled stomach can send signals to the brain, just as a brain that is in distress can send signals to the gut. It is all connected. A person's stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression. That's because the brain and the gastrointestinal (GI) system are intimately connected. When you add alcohol into the mix, it gets even more complicated. This week, the ladies talk about the correlation between alcohol, anxiety, stress and shame. Camila, Kim and Catherine also discuss how sobriety allows you to create new neural pathways to replace old patterns of behavior.

Recovery Coach || Storywork Coach || Sound Therapist

“I help gray-area drinkers regain control & rediscover who they truly are”

    BIO:

Matt Gardiner is a passionate and empathetic Recovery Coach & Life Coach who has helped numerous people get out of their 'stuck stories' and move towards the life of their dreams.

He focuses on changing the language & words, and the stories you've been attaching to the events in your life.

Better words + better breathing = better life.

Matt's vision of Recovery includes an active and healthy lifestyle, that also includes planning for some very deliberate, relaxing downtime for self-care and healing.

Matt is also a talented musician and Sound Therapist, which compliments his work as a Coach.

'Beyond Recovery' is a podcast hosted by Matt, where guests come on to share their journeys to, and through, recovery.

    ***

Matt battled alcohol dependency from his late teens into his early 30s. He was a daily drinker from age 21 to 30. At age 27, Matt hospitalized himself with acute pancreatitis. While this was initially framed as the wake-up call Matt needed, after 3 days in the hospital, he was back out drinking within 24hrs of being released.

At age 30, Matt hit a rock bottom moment which led to 3 years + of sobriety. At a friend's wedding, he decided he would attempt “moderation” again, which he tried for the next several years.

When Matt’s dad passed away suddenly in late 2018 (he had been a heavy drinker his whole adult life) Matt decided on the weekend of his father's Celebration of Life that it was time to sober up once again!

That was in April 2019. Matt is now back at 3 years+ sober!
