Second episode discussing how Joe Biden is not for us, is like MAGA for liberals, and will not help us move forward. This conversation continues from the last episode on "context" around Biden's record.

On this episode, Anoa is joined by Brian Sonenstein of Shadowproof and the Beyond Prisons podcast. Brian and Anoa discuss Joe Biden's rollout and the calls for "context" around his support for the 1994 Crime Bill. Anoa and Brian parse through the calls for context, providing actual context to the discussion. There is a racist subtext to the conversation. Positioning the conversation as an attack or undermining the effort underway prioritizes the feelings and needs of someone who spent his career supporting and advocating for some of the most draconian laws of the modern political era. Despite all the praise and supposedly "wokeness" achieved after 13th, too many liberals are willing to cast aside real opportunities for progress to slide back. There are several good articles that lay out the issues with Biden's criminal justice record. This doesn't even begin to address his issues across multiple other areas. Accountability and Justice is critical to many communities and that should not be set aside because a wealthy white man who is politically connected decides to run for president a fourth time.

On this edition of The Way, Anoa speaks with photographer and writer Yoav Litvin about the recent discussion concerning problematic liaisons and the need for critical thinking and critique in our media spaces. Anoa and Yoav also discuss the reaction to the critique of ideas, another form of freedom of speech, and the quick need to dismiss by some rather than address concrete points when raised. On this edition of The Way, Anoa discusses the Rewire original documentary "Care in Chaos" with Lindsay Beyerstein, investigative journalist and Care in Chaos Director; Calla Hales, Clinic Administrator at A Preferred Women’s Health Center (APWHC) in Charlotte, NC; and Jessica Mason Pieklo, Rewire Vice President of Law and the Courts, legal expert. "Care in Chaos" highlights the issues with the growing threat to safe and legal abortion access. While there is so much focus on legislative efforts to restrict a woman's right to choose as well as her ability to access care, there is little attention given to physical barriers to access. "Care in Chaos" examines the issue with anti-choice protesters engagement with abortion clinics, patients, and staff. There are laws in some states that provide some degree of protection against anti-choice actors, yet there continue to be issues with acts of aggression and violence levied at clinics, staff, and patients. Lindsay, Calla, and Jessica set the stage for greater conversation on protecting women's' access to care as well as engaging with elected officials and community advocates to provide meaningful enforcement of laws meant to protect in situations of harassment as documented in the film. On this edition of The Way with Anoa, Mayoral Candidate Nikkita Oliver talked with Anoa about her motivation for running as well as the importance of taking advantage of opportunities outside the two party system. The People's Party platform and campaign process have been community led and organized, serving as a potential model for community-based action and electoral involvement at the local level. Nikkita shares about balancing regular life duties such as full-time work, with running for citywide office. One thing is clear, this is a strong effort by a collective of engaged organizers and community folks to create sustainable change not just by changing who serves as Mayor but how the office itself is run. Looking forward to seeing what happens next. Read more about the People's Party and Why Nikkita is their candidate here: https://seattlepeoplesparty.com/why-we-are-running Tune in and Share!

On a quick trip back to the mountain state Anoa managed to catch a rally led by organizers and activists pushing for fully funded benefits through PEIA. Last spring we were captivated by the teacher led movement fighting back against the careless disregard of many who sit under the gold dome. This fight has continued and will continue through November. Teachers and other public employees have already proven their power and are not letting the momentum die down. Anoa also managed to catch State Senator Richard Ojeda, who is now running for Congress in the 3rd District. Senator Ojeda is not one to mince words and focused on making sure all West Virginians know they have the power to stand up and demand better. People powered movements are a beautiful thing!

Recently, I sat down with Imani Gandy, Senior Legal Analyst with Rewire. In the course of our conversation, there are several interesting points raised including why are we as progressives willing to excuse some people while holding others to the fire. This conversation is probably one of my favorites since starting the show because I was able to talk with a Black woman like myself who has gone from being an unhappy lawyer to honing their craft as an advocacy journalist. There are so few of us in these independent media spaces so it was interesting to get more insight into her path and perspectives. We do not have to all agree, but we can certainly learn a lot from good conversations with good people doing good work. Check out the Boom! Lawyered Podcast hosted by Imani and Jessica Mason Pieklo.

Last month I had the opportunity to interview the amazing Professor Sara Goldrick-Rab. Between technical issues and the craziness of life I thought I lost our interview, but thankfully it has been found! I initially reached out to Professor Goldrick-Rab to discuss the education portion of the Trump Budget; however, we dug deeper into her research into the challenges facing college students and families beyond tuition affordability. Professor Goldrick-Rab encourages those fighting for issues like free tuition to look at the other factors in Higher Education access and affordability. Check out her book "Paying the Price" if you have time! This is research and policy efforts we should be supporting if we are going to help make college accessible and affordable for all. The two talk about Senator Turner's new role as President of Our Revolution as well as the growing pains within this wave of progressive movement building. President Turner (has a nice ring right?) talks about the need to be deliberate and intentional in nurturing diversity in our movement in terms of people and ideas. A thoughtful conversation, Nina make is clear that she isn't afraid to shake things up where necessary and has no intention on simply shepherding folks into the Democratic party. She reiterates her commitment to good people doing good work regardless of party. I look forward to seeing what she does in this role.

On this edition of The Way with Anoa, Anoa is joined by Jacqueline Luqman in a discussion about race, progressive spaces, and moving beyond our personal discomfort to fight injustice. This is an excellent dialogue about the reflecting on our lived experiences and history and how this informs the work we have to do moving forward. Even in issue based advocacy we cannot disregard the systemic issues deeply ingrained in American society pertaining to imperialism and racism and how they are intertwined with our economic system. Finally, the ladies challenge those who consider themselves white allies to lead in matters of discomfort to address the emotional burden some conversations can cause. Powerful dialogue and one you won't want to miss!

Earlier this evening, Anoa spoke with Attorney Gerald Griggs about the newly established Voter Fraud Commission. He also detailed the issues with the voter fraud commission led by cross check creator Kris Kobach. Gerald also discussed cases undertaken by the Atlanta and Georgia chapters of the NAACP to address voter suppression on the local and state level. This episode is a mashup of commentary discussing the March 8 International Women's Strike and three interviews conducted post interview to showcase the varying experience of Women. Anoa makes the case for researching and understanding the motivation and intent behind the day's actions. There is power in spoken word, and listening to the experiences of others can help us grow as we continue to build spaces for opposing structural and systemic issues. Today is as much about sending a message as it is about the value of women standing up and speaking their truth. This is the beginning of a new way of discussing feminism and organizing around "women's issues." All issues are women's issues. We will be heard.
