May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I invite you to reflect its national theme this year: Community.

Saint Paul reminds us that we are one body in Christ. When someone we love suffers, we suffer too. Mental health struggles can feel isolating, but hope and healing are truly possible, especially when we entrust ourselves to Gods infinite love and saving prayers.

In our homes, communities, schools, and neighborhoods, may we nurture a spirit of empathy and presence to one another. Be attentive. Pray. Share encouragement. Together, with God’s grace, we can ensure no one feels alone.

If you or someone you care about is struggling, remember: you are not alone. They are there for you, and the Lord is in your midst, the one who transforms distress to peace; suffering to glory.

"With profound gratitude to Almighty God, I join the universal Church in thanksgiving for Pope Leo XIV. As the Bishop of Rome and Successor of Saint Peter, our Holy Father is for the entire world the visible principle of Christian unity. I encourage everyone in our families, parishes and schools to offer prayers, sacrifices and works of charity for Pope Leo XIV and his intentions.

As Bishop of Arlington, I invite all the faithful to join me for a Mass of Thanksgiving for Pope Leo XIV, which will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More on Monday, May 12 at 12:05PM. This Mass of Thanksgiving will also be available via livestream, for those unable to attend in person. Through this celebration of the Holy Eucharist, we can support our Holy Father in a special way, asking Almighty God to grant that he may always bear witness to the truth, joy, and beauty of the Gospel with courage, steadfastness, and wisdom.

United in prayer for Pope Leo XIV, may we ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen him daily with divine grace in order that he may bring the light of faith and the unchanging and life-giving word of God to the challenges of our times. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, a time of deep reflection as we journey toward Easter. On this sacred day, we recall Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where crowds welcomed Him with palm branches, proclaiming, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

As we hold our palms, we remember that Christ’s path to glory was one of humility, sacrifice, and love. Holy Week invites us to walk with Him, embracing His call to faith and renewal.

Lent is a sacred season of penance, sacrifice, and renewal—a time to grow in virtue as we draw closer to Christ. The four cardinal virtues—prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude—guide our Lenten journey and daily lives.

Prudence calls us to make wise choices, discerning God’s will in every moment. Justiceleads us to act with fairness, love, and mercy toward others. Temperance teaches self-discipline, helping us fast from excess and grow in spiritual strength. Fortitude gives us courage to carry our crosses, trusting in God’s grace.

By embracing these virtues, God transforms our hearts and deepens our faith. Through these virtues, we prepare for the joy of Easter and the fullness of Christ our Lord!

At some point over the past few decades in our national life as Americans, we somehow stopped really speaking with each other. Rather, we started talking over each other and at times even screaming at each other. We see more frequently that quiet conversation, courtesy, and politeness having been displaced by angry tones, rants, and bitter words. We have become impatient with one another, on edge, and ready to argue at the slightest impulse. Such exchanges rarely, if ever, reverse minds or affect outcomes Today, and maybe as a daily routine, may we intentionally practice a holy detachment from the harsh rhetoric and constant chatter of television, radio, and social media. In imitation of Jesus, may we be kind, respectful and embracing of all people—without exception.

While we live in a society that often rejects those who are weak, fragile, or vulnerable, they are the most in need of our care, protection, and love. January is Poverty Awareness Month. So many of us are blessed to be emerging from a Christmas season enjoying a warm home and an abundance of good fellowship and celebration. Yet tragically, more than 37 million Americans live in poverty. More than 1.5 million children experience homelessness each year. We can do our part to alleviate poverty in our midst. We can commit to sharing our resources with those in need; support charitable organizations that help those in poverty; and pray daily for those without the necessities of life we take for granted. We can do better, starting with a concrete act of charity today. May we ask our Lord for the grace to be more aware, more vigilant, and more compassionate for the sake of all our brothers and sisters experiencing need.

A Resolution That Will Last - One Minute With Bishop Burbidge Dec 30, 2024

A new year brings new opportunities, new ways of looking at things and, perhaps, new challenges. We make resolutions, promise ourselves that this will be the year we keep them, but we all know that in a week, a month, or if we are fortunate, maybe longer, we will often fall short of our goals. We may have good intentions, convinced we have learned from past years when our expectations seemed reasonable and in reach, yet were ultimately unattainable. But there may be an explanation. Many times the reason is because we are relying mostly on our own will, determination, and strength rather than God’s grace and daily help. With him, all things are possible. Entrust your New Year’s resolution to the Lord and do your best—day by day.

At Christmas, we hear the proclamation: “For unto us a Savior is born who is Christ and Lord.” This good news of great joy is the reason for our renewed faith and hope. In a world experiencing so much unrest, a Savior is born who announces peace, brings glad tidings, and comforts his people. In a nation that is divided, a Savior is born who unites us as God’s holy family, as brothers and sisters. In our lives, when we are overwhelmed by our crosses and sufferings, a Savior is born who embraces us in his love and mercy with the strength and grace we need. And for all these gifts, the Lord asks only our faithfulness. May the peace and joy that only Christ can give be yours at Christmas, and always.

But even during the Advent season filled with many blessings we may ask: “how is it possible to rejoice always?” We are aware of war and violence throughout our world. We see division and unrest in our nation. Many people are dealing with emotional and mental health issues, including distress and anxiety. All of us carry some type of burden and cross. So how is it possible to rejoice always? We can rejoice because we know the Lord is in our midst. He is always there to provide us comfort and consolation, and to love, heal, and forgive us, for the One whose birth we celebrate anew is the One alone who can give us the peace for which we long. In him, we have every reason to rejoice!

The foolish handle situations by themselves, but the wise depend on the strength that comes from God. The decision is ours: to go it alone, or to entrust to our Lord all that we hope to accomplish and to allow ourselves to be carried by him, the One who makes us “truly wise.”

In our everyday lives, and especially in our spiritual lives, we can sometimes fall to perfectionism. We convince ourselves that anything less than flawless is a failure in the eyes of God. Yet it is just the opposite! Our sins, flaws, and crosses actually become blessings if they lead us to a profound understanding for our need for God and a deeper reliance on his love and mercy. In our weakness, we avoid discouragement by trusting in the Lord’s promise, the One who says: “My grace is sufficient for you.”

Like the disciples on the sea, we experience “storms” in life. They can be terrifying and overwhelming unless we remember that Jesus is always in the boat with us. September is Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a difficult topic to discuss, especially for those affected by the suicide of a loved one. Tragically, there are more than 48,000 suicides in the United States yearly. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death among all ages. There are three things we can — no — we must do. First, recognize the warning signs: individuals who seem extremely sad, anxious, withdrawn, agitated, or full of rage need attention and care. Second, be unafraid to invite them to seek help immediately by calling 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Third, pray specifically for those in need, asking God to bless them with his healing love.

In the United States, we will celebrate World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly this Sunday. Pope Francis chose a unique theme for this year: “Do not cast me off in my old age.” The Holy Father wants to “call attention to the fact that, sadly, loneliness is the bitter lot in life of many elderly persons, so often the victims of the throwaway culture.” Use this day as a reminder that grandparents and the elderly are a treasure to be honored, for they impart great wisdom, experience, and love to their own families and to future generations. May we pray that our grandparents, living or deceased, and the elderly among us always feel our warm embrace, always are remembered, and forever have a place in our hearts.

The Power of Forgiveness - One Minute with Bishop Burbidge Aug 26, 2024

It is a natural tendency that when someone offends us, our first inclination is to retaliate and seek revenge. We want the other person to feel the same hurt, the same harm, and the same sadness inflicted upon us. Such a choice, however, only leads to more evil and destruction. Jesus shows us a radically different option, which may have incredibly difficult challenges, but is not impossible to take. Offer forgiveness. Be reconciled. Think of how transformed our culture would be if we only paused for a bit before striking back; if we were able to see the goodness in others no matter the pain we may feel in the moment. To forgive from our heart is only possible with God’s grace and by remembering the many times Jesus has forgiven us.

At some point, all of us will have an ailment, sickness or heaviness of heart that afflicts us. It might be a lingering illness, an injury that limits our mobility, or a sadness that simply refuses to leave us. We may attempt to reassure ourselves that things will get better – yet hope remains elusive. But there is hope, and hope has a name. Jesus once cured a woman who had been ill for 12 years, and raised a girl thought to be dead. He continues to heal us, in accordance with his will, when we least expect it. He raises us at our lowest points. Our Savior only asks for our faith in his power to do so, and it is this faith that will save us. Pray: Lord, increase my faith.

It is essential that we approach today as God’s gift and make the most of it. Saint Paul VI encouraged us to avoid procrastination when he said: “Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it now! There are only so many tomorrows.”

Jesus is the Good Shepherd who leads the flock. If we follow him, we will stay on the right path and not get lost in life. We need the grace of God so that we can see others as he sees them; forgive others as he forgives them; and love others as he loves them. If we live in such a way, our patience will be reflected in how we speak to each other, in the encouragement we offer, and in the opportunities we give one another to begin anew. As we near the mid-point of summer we should ask ourselves: have we allowed for rest, refreshment, and quality time with family, or are we still drawn to excessive cellphone use, text messaging, and non-stop days, perhaps even while on vacation? It is a challenge to step away. Find a healthy balance before summer fades. In fact, now is also the time to commit to a spiritual renewal and to make that our highest priority. Set aside some time each day - it could be 10 minutes for some or an hour for others - to find a quiet place and sit in silence with the Lord. In the midst of the noise, you will find solitude to be the perfect chance to recharge, refresh, and renew your relationship with God and one another.

It could be when our hometown sports team is suddenly on a winning streak; or when we finally have the time and desire to pursue a hobby we started long ago. Jesus offers us a life-changing opportunity to become fully engaged in our relationship with him: He invites us to move from casual interest to going “all in.” He asks of us only three things: to remain in his love, to follow his commands, and to serve one another. If we do, we will not merely exist, but live! We will no longer be strangers but counted among his friends. We will not be sad but know the joy he desires for us. We are amid Religious Freedom Week, a week that gains importance each year because, unfortunately, the very rights that our Constitution guarantees are increasingly under attack. The theme for this week is “Called to the Fullness of Dignity.” Religious freedom means allowing people of faith and religious communities to live out their deeply held convictions in public and to serve the good of all. This right is so important that our founders included it in the First Amendment. Yet, with the existing polarization in our country, this freedom faces challenges from many sides. In these troubled times, we must be unafraid to bring our faith into the public square, to uphold conscience protections, and to safeguard our schools, hospitals, and child welfare service providers, among others, so they may carry out their missions with integrity.

So often, we hear someone speaking out of our sight, yet we are nearly certain who is speaking because the voice is familiar and distinguishable from others we know. Surely, by the tone, pitch, or cadence we realize it is a friend or family member with whom we converse every day. Those who follow Jesus recognize his voice, but this familiarity requires spiritual discipline and daily practice. We must allow ourselves silence – declare a cell phone and social media freeze – for a few moments each day so the Lord can speak to our hearts. The more we listen, the more we recognize his voice. It is a voice of grace, mercy, and compassion, a soothing voice of the one who loves us and who will guide us through our daily lives.

This Sunday we will celebrate Father’s Day. St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, is the perfect role model. Fathers have an instinctive ability to offer direction when needed, correction when warranted, and instruction when required. When we humbly acknowledge our weaknesses, we become open to what needs to change in our lives. Yes, we can and should call out evil and help our friends make good decisions. But our first obligation is to work on our own flaws. This will lead us to seek our Lord’s mercy, to respect others, and to grow in humility and charity. With God’s grace, may both these virtues increase in our lives this day.

But in our spiritual lives, going it alone does not work. Jesus reminds us that he is the vine — our strength — and we are the branches. Apart from him we can do nothing; but with him all things are possible. Our Lord asks only that we give him our best efforts, sacrifices, and hard work, and that we trust he will use these gifts in miraculous ways to bless and transform our lives — if only we stay attached to the vine.

How often when we pack for a trip do we add just one more item, then something else, and finally that last thing we must bring? We do the same in our daily lives. We run errands, shuttle from one appointment to the next, perhaps even eat lunch on the run. Soon our day becomes a whirlwind of activity, our task list becomes overburdened, and we accomplish little. In Sacred Scripture, Jesus told his apostles to leave anything behind that would weigh them down. We should do the same! What is the Lord asking you to surrender today? It could be fear, doubt, distress, or worldly possessions. Trust that, in Jesus, you have all you need. This will allow you to “travel lightly” throughout this day and always.

In April, our nation observes National Child Abuse Prevention Month —a time when we acknowledge, discuss, and find solutions for unimaginable crimes against children. It is estimated that more than 600,000 children are mistreated in the United States each year, either sexually, physically, emotionally, or by neglect, with neglect being the most prevalent. We must be diligent in our observations, looking for signs such as unexplainable injuries, disruptive behavior, fear of going home, or malnourishment. We must be vigilant, having heightened awareness and, most importantly, the courage to inform authorities immediately if we have a suspicion or knowledge of abuse or neglect. All of God’s children are infinitely valuable, and are to be loved, respected and treasured.

Next month, many of us will be rushing to prepare our taxes and provide what we owe, or what may be refunded, to federal, state, and local governments. We will likely go through our paperwork and conduct a personal audit to ensure that everything is accurate. Friends, we are at the mid-point of the Lenten season. This is the perfect opportunity to conduct a spiritual audit. What have we done to prepare ourselves for the glory that awaits us at Easter? Or, what have we not done that we promised we would do? We can still get our spiritual priorities in place, whether it be through reconciliation with God, acts of service through works of mercy, or simply more prayer time with the Lord. World Day of the Sick - One Minute with Bishop Burbidge Feb 12, 2024

We recently observed the annual World Day of the Sick, established by Saint John Paul II to urge people to pray for individuals who are ill and their caregivers. There are patients in overcrowded hospitals, our elderly brothers and sisters in nursing homes, and those in hospice care on their way to eternal rest that so desperately need our prayers and spiritual support. We must also pray for the doctors, nurses, health care professionals, and family members who fight fatigue on a daily basis, overburdened but unbowed, in service and commitment to those for whom they show unwavering compassion. We too will face health challenges. Therefore, may we all make some time this week to pause and remember those struggling with illness and their caregivers and entrust them to God’s loving embrace.
