Myth-Busting Series :A Nexus Letter Guarantees Service Connection Sep 29, 2026

    You'll learn:

    • What a nexus letter is and its purpose
    • Who makes the final service connection decision
    • Why some nexus letters are more persuasive than others
    • Common myths about private medical opinions
    • What evidence veterans should focus on beyond a nexus letter

Whether you're considering obtaining a nexus letter or trying to understand why your claim was denied, this video provides practical insight into how medical evidence is evaluated during the VA disability claims process.

Myth-Busting Series :You Need Treatment in Service to Win a Claim Sep 22, 2026

Myth-Busting: “You Need Treatment in Service to Win a VA Claim”

Do you need to have been treated for a condition while you were in the military for it to become service connected?

    Not necessarily.

In this episode of our VA Claim Myth-Busting Series, Leah Bucholz, PA-C, breaks down the common misconception that a lack of treatment or diagnosis in your service treatment records automatically prevents a VA disability claim from being successful.

For many veterans, symptoms or injuries occurred during service but were never formally evaluated or documented. Others may not receive a diagnosis until years after leaving the military. While service treatment records can be important evidence, they are not necessarily the only evidence that may be considered.

    In This Video:

    • The basic elements of direct service connection
    • Treatment in service vs. evidence of an in-service event, injury, or disease
    • Why missing service treatment records do not automatically end a claim
    • The role of veteran statements and buddy/lay statements
    • Why a post-service diagnosis may still be relevant
    • How gaps in treatment can affect the evidence
    • The importance of establishing an accurate medical timeline
    • Secondary service connection and why the condition may develop after service
    • How medical records, diagnostic testing, military duties, and medical literature may fit into the analysis
    • Why alternative causes and unfavorable evidence should also be considered

    Key Takeaway

No treatment in service does not automatically mean no service connection.

For a typical direct service-connection claim, the evidence generally needs to address:

    1. A current disability
    2. An in-service event, injury, or disease
    3. A relationship—or nexus—between the current disability and military service

Every claim is different, and the strength of the evidence matters. The goal should be an accurate evaluation of the veteran's history and available medical evidence—not simply whether a condition appears in the service treatment records.

Prestige Veteran Medical Consulting provides educational information regarding medical evidence and the medical opinion process. This video is for educational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or guarantee any particular VA claim outcome.

Myth-Busting Series : "The VA Already Has My Records—Isn't That Enough?" Sep 15, 2026
    Show notes

Many Veterans assume that because the VA already has their service treatment records or VA medical records, they have everything needed to approve their disability claim. Unfortunately, that's one of the most common misconceptions in the VA claims process.

In this episode, Leah Bucholz—a former Army Physician Assistant and former VA C&P examiner—explains the critical difference between medical records and medical evidence. You'll learn why treatment records alone often aren't enough to establish service connection and what the VA is actually looking for when deciding your claim.

Whether you're filing an initial claim, responding to a denial, or preparing an appeal, understanding what evidence may be missing can make all the difference.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why having medical records isn't always enough to win a VA disability claim
    • The difference between treatment records and evidence for service connection
    • The three essential elements of a successful VA disability claim
    • Why doctors write treatment notes differently than medical opinions
    • Real-world examples of claims that lacked the necessary nexus evidence
    • The limits of the VA's Duty to Assist
    • Why quality evidence is more important than the quantity of records you submit
    • Questions every Veteran should ask before filing or appealing a claim

If you've ever said, "The VA already has my records," this episode is for you.

⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes only and is not legal or medical advice. Every VA disability claim is unique and should be evaluated based on its individual facts.

Myth-Busting Series : Only VA Doctors Can Write Medical Opinions. Sep 08, 2026
    Show notes

One of the most common misconceptions Veterans hear is that only VA doctors can write medical opinions or nexus letters. The truth is, the VA does not require medical opinions to come from VA providers. What matters is whether the healthcare professional is competent to provide an opinion based on their education, training, and experience.

In this episode, Leah Bucholz—a former Army Physician Assistant and former VA C&P examiner—breaks down what the VA actually looks for when evaluating medical opinions. You'll learn who can write a persuasive medical opinion, what makes an opinion carry weight, and why the quality of the medical reasoning matters far more than where the provider works.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • The truth about who can write a VA medical opinion or nexus letter
    • What "competent medical evidence" really means
    • Why VA doctors don't automatically have more credibility than private providers
    • The key elements of a persuasive medical opinion
    • Common myths that can hurt your VA disability claim
    • Important court cases that shape how VA evaluates medical opinions, including Nieves-Rodriguez v. Peake and Stefl v. Nicholson
    • Red flags to watch for when reviewing a medical opinion

Whether you're filing an initial claim, appealing a denial, or trying to strengthen your evidence, this episode will help you better understand what the VA is actually looking for.

⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes only and is not legal or medical advice. Every VA disability claim is unique.

The Cost of Ignoring Symptoms After Service Aug 18, 2026
    Show notes

Why do so many veterans wait years before seeking treatment?

In this episode, we discuss the culture of “pushing through” in the military and the long-term physical and mental health consequences that can follow years after service. Many veterans normalize chronic pain, sleep problems, anxiety, respiratory symptoms, and emotional stress long before they ever seek medical care.

    We break down:

    • Why veterans commonly delay treatment
    • The military mindset of “just deal with it”
    • How chronic conditions evolve over time
    • Why delayed treatment does not automatically mean a condition is unrelated to service
    • The long-term impact of untreated orthopedic injuries
    • Chronic pain and secondary mental health conditions
    • Toxic exposure symptoms that may appear years later
    • Hypervigilance, insomnia, and emotional burnout
    • The importance of medical chronology and evidence in VA disability claims
    • How untreated conditions can contribute to secondary complications over time
