"The phenomenon is more likely connected to the mysteries of the psyche than the mysteries of the cosmos, the latter being mirrored in the former. The shapes and styles of contact experiences vary according to science fiction, technological advances, cultural conflicts, and reigning ideologies. In a Western, primarily materialist culture, the stories will fill the mold of the dominant materialism. This is seen in the nuts and bolts approach. The interdimensional hypothesis likewise follows advances in 20th-century quantum physics, namely the Copenhagen interpretation. And the conspiratorial nature of ufology mirrors the shift initiated by postmodernism, which eliminated the idea of a universal stratum of meaning in favor of a network of culturally contingent associations. The repressed universal meanings then erupt, Freudian-style, into consciousness as conspiracies, black projects, and various iterations of the so-called Deep State." - I made that up
