Ep. 058 How God Inspired A Pastor To Restore Bikes For Those In Need | Bike Ministry Sep 28, 2022

There are many ways to give back to the community and the less fortunate. Some people donate food, clothes, money, or anything else essential to living.

All of these are very useful, but what if you gave the gift of mobility? The ability to get from point A to point B. Something we all sometimes take for granted when it is so readily available.

That’s what our guest on today’s episode is doing. The founder of Bike Ministry, pastor Robbie Pruitt and a team of volunteers have restored over 1400 bikes in the past 22 months. All funds from repairing bikes have gone toward repairing and donating bikes for homeless shelters or to children in under-resourced areas.

Bike Ministry gained traction when Robbie was approached by news outlets to share Bike Ministry with the public during the pandemic when there wasn’t a whole lot of good news being shown. Since it was a worthy cause and something that may help bring the community together in a time when there was nothing good on the news, he decided to agree to share his story to encourage and inspire people.

Well, it did the trick, because Robbie is now at capacity, fixing bikes in his home and providing bikes to anyone in need.This is a beautiful story about good people coming together for the betterment of humanity.

I interviewed the founder of JUST TRYAN IT Molly Darby.

Mollie Darby’s background is in interior Architecture. Mollie took 11 years off to raise 3 boys and is now back in the work world designing again! JUST TRYAN IT is very near and dear to her heart because Ryan is her middle son. When Ryan was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009, an amazing group of women came together to support not just her family, but other families in similar situations. She LOVE’s what JUST TRYAN IT does and looks forward to what the future holds. Mollie isn’t sure what her greatest accomplishment was as a child. She wishes that it had something like JUST TRYAN IT to compete in and to give back to. Maybe she would remember swimming, biking and running for a GREAT cause!

Ep 056: CAST - Preventing Infants & Toddlers from Drowning Aug 31, 2022

Before she became an ISR mom and then a certified instructor, Liz was an elementary school teacher with a strong background as well as passion for business and philanthropy. After her family’s ISR self-rescue experience, Liz saw a window of opportunity to continue working with kids, while owning my own business and giving back to the community. Having personally experienced what it is like to go-it-alone as both an ISR swim mom and as an ISR instructor, it quickly became clear that a team approach was needed if she were to effectively increase self-rescue access in a city as large as Chicago. This inspired her to create CAST. The mission at CAST is to increase access to self-rescue lessons and to empower families and communities to create strong water safety strategies. What Liz learned in her initial ISR experience was that each day in this country, 3 families lose a child to drowning. She also learned that physical activity does absolute wonders for my girls, and that working as a team towards a big commitment taught her whole family the value of working together and believing in each other.

As a result of her early love of horses, Laurie Calhoun became the co-owner and co-manager of Summer Wind Farm in 1986. In this capacity, she became aware of the plight of Thoroughbreds when their racing careers were over. As it became apparent that more needed to be done to save these beautiful animals, and to honor the memory and zest for life of a charismatic racehorse named Foxie G, Laurie established The Foxie G Foundation on September 14, 2012. Foxie G enjoyed his retirement at Summer Wind where the organization is based. John Claude founded the Elder Outreach Club, a successful organization started at South County High School, and currently has over 120 members from two schools. 90 members from South County High School and 30 members from Bishop Ireton High school. John Claude is a High School Varsity baseball player, with experience competing on high-level travel baseball teams. He is a Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) member who competed and received awards at the district and state conferences level and qualified for DECA’s International Career Development Conference in 2022. After four years at A Wider Circle, Amy Javaid became the President & CEO in July 2021. Amy offers 20 years of experience working with nonprofits in both the U.S. andinternationally. Amy has spent her career in the management, project design, development, implementation, and monitoring of programs for an array of marginalized populations. Specifically, she has led programs in the health, education, and workforce development fields. Keith Moore is from southwest Washington DC. He was born on August 10th. Keith recently graduated as Valedictorian from Kipp DC Somerset College Prep class of 2021. As a future political figure, he believes in giving back to his community. Keith has also served as SGA President for all four years at his high school. Keith is currently attending Morgan State University. Keith is a videographer, photographer, and graphic designer. Since 2019, he has been working with So What Else DC as the youngest Director ever. Keith loves what he does at So What Else because he has a passion to support the kids of Washington DC. Also, he is on the SWE PR TEAM with Doctor. Holden. For as long as he can remember, Dave Silbert has always wanted to help people and serve his community in whatever way he could. As a young adult, Dave gained extensive experience working with people as the Assistant Director of an in-patient rehabilitation facility in California. After returning to the East Coast, he started his own personal training and sports coaching business, learning the in's and outs of running one's own business and the joy in working with kids. In 2009, a life-changing service trip to the lower 9th Ward in New Orleans changed the course of his life, and the emotional impact of taking part in this kind of philanthropic activism inspired him and Bob to organize their own community’s efforts in a local nonprofit to stimulate volunteerism in their own community; from this simple trip, So What Else was born. In an earlier life, I worked in advertising then moved to corporate philanthropy, which led me to 10+ years working in conservation education at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. My role was to help educate the public about the frailty of endangered species and their habitats in faraway places like Namibia and China. It was an amazing experience!
