Show notes

This conversation was prompted by two articles Daniel and Ken wrote on the Symbolic World blog on the topic and use of the word “egregore”. Here we discuss what this term means and how it fits into the symbolic worldview, the traditional cosmology and Christianity. We also talk about alternative terms like golem, artificial intelligence, and more generally how we can approach and categorize higher beings, angels and principalities. 239 - Jordan Hall and John Vervaeke - Egregores, Mobs and Demons Jun 28, 2022

Show notes

In this conversation with Jordan Hall and John Vervaeke we discuss the meaning and implications of "egregores" as described by the recent two articles on the Symbolic World Blog by Daniel Townhead and Kenneth Florence as well as in the book "Meditations on the Tarot" by Valentin Tomberg. The question of egregores is part of our ongoing discussion about higher beings, collective intelligence, distributed cognition and principalities. We also discuss our current world, our language as a secular culture, what a solution to the meaning crisis will look like and artificial intelligence. 238 - How Christ Saves His Father From the Underworld Jun 15, 2022

Show notes

This video is a response to Jordan Peterson’s analysis of Pinocchio and the notion of saving your father from the underworld. How does this idea fit into Christianity? At first it seems that Christ’s story flips the pattern, where He is saved by the underworld by His Father, but is there more to it? 237 - Bernardo Kastrup - The Priority of Mind Jun 08, 2022

Show notes

This is a repost from my conversation with Bernardo Kastrup on the More Christ podcast and YouTube channel. We discuss dissociation and the problem of unity and multiplicity, how the Western mind approaches the world and what we have lost in modernity, banality, heavenly hierarchy and transcendence, crisis in the West and recovering the sacramental life without sentimentality. Bio (from his website): Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on 'Scientific American,' the 'Institute of Art and Ideas,' the 'Blog of the American Philosophical Association' and 'Big Think,' among others. 233 - Why Humans Sacrifice May 11, 2022

Show notes

In this video I discuss the symbolic meaning of sacrifice in general, why it’s a human universal and how we still engage with ritualistic sacrifice today. There are many different examples of sacrifice, not only killings, but offering and dedication for initiation into a group, as tribute or taxes, remembering the dead, to found a city or a home etc. Finally I talk about how Christianity solves the problem of sacrifice, in particular the problem of mimetic sacrifice of the scapegoat (René Girard).
