In this episode we discuss his new book, River Songs:, the role of storytelling when it comes to deadbeat dams, climate change, and why fly anglers are often the tip of the spear when it comes to activism. The Everglades are a National Park, a World Heritage Site, and there is no place else on Earth like it. The Everglades are also a place that is near and dear to my heart because I used to make an annual trip with some friends from Savannah to camp, fish, and explore. I landed my first tarpon in the Everglades, have too many funny stories to tell camping on chickees, and found myself completely awestruck by the fishery, bird life, and vastness of the Everglades. That's why I am stoked to share this interview with Chris Wittman, co-founder of Captains for Clean Water, and we discuss everything from how Chris started guiding, the history of Everglades restoration, what Big Sugar is doing to prevent restoration, and what you can do today to support Captains for Clean Water by signing their petition to oppose Big Sugar’s lawsuit over a critical Everglades restoration project. When I first moved to Charleston I was looking for a way to get plugged in to the sustainability scene and I was introduced to The Sustainability Institute (SI) and have been a fan and supporter of their work ever since then. Bryan Cordell is SI's leader and Executive Director who has been at the forefront of sustainability in Charleston for a couple of decades now. The Sustainability Institute is a nonprofit that promotes resilient & equitable communities while building the next level of conservation leaders. SI is able to accomplish their mission through three major programs, including: Charleston RISES, which is a green building/high performance building certification; weatherization projects for low-income families; and the Environmental Conservation Corps, which is an innovative and award-winning program affiliated with AmeriCorps (The Corps Network) that provides individuals the opportunity to serve their communities while learning new skills and gaining new experience in the field of environmental conservation.

EP 42. NREL's Sherry Stout Aug 26, 2021

In this episode of The Sustainable Angler, I interview National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Sherry Stout. NREL "advances the science and engineering of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power technologies and provides the knowledge to integrate and optimize energy systems" and Sherry is the Arctic Strategic Program Manager and Senior Research Engineer for NREL. However, Sherry and I met because she reached out to me because she purchased a SaraBella fly rod because of their commitment to go carbon neutral and being a member of the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance. We discuss everything from the energy crisis of the 1970's to how the Arctic is warming 3x faster than the rest of the planet is a canary in the coal mine of sorts of what is to come related to climate change. We also discuss how to responsible fish for trout as stream temperatures rise, as well as the stream closures and Hoot Owl Restrictions that are in place in Colorado, Oregon and Montana due to low stream flows and high water temperatures. Finally we chat about the challenges associated with cities transitioning to 100% renewable energy and Sherry shares a message of climate hope. In this episode of The Sustainable Angler podcast I interview Creative Energies Co-Owner Scott Kane. This interview was especially fun because I was an intern/solar installer for Creative Energies back in 2010 while living in Jackson Hole, WY. I got to travel all over Idaho, Wyoming and Utah installing solar with a fly rod in-hand and looking back, it was probably when we were installing a solar-powered fish screen on a ranch for a local chapter of Trout Unlimited that the seed was planted to protect what I love by marrying fly fishing and sustainability. Fast-forward 11 years later and I am still working to protect what I love and Scott and the team at Creative Energies is still working to solve the climate crisis by installing solar all over Idaho, Wyoming and Utah, and in this episode we provide some background information on solar; the challenges the solar industry faces as there have recently been several electric utilities that are trying to reduce the amount they buy solar power back from homeowners and businesses making it a far less attractive option in terms of payback periods; and we also discuss how all fish love solar! In this episode of The Sustainable Angler Podcast, I interview Fly Fishing Climate Alliance Members, Corinne & Garrison Doctor from Rep Your Water, Tom Fernandez from Tailwater Lodge, Dave McCoy from Emerald Water Anglers and Kyle Schaefer from Soul Fly Outfitters. In the summer of 2019, I first started pitching the idea of forming a Climate Alliance with the goal of making the fly fishing industry Carbon Neutral by 2030. It seemed daunting, but thankfully, there are enough people in this industry who care and are willing to put themselves out there and make that commitment. I am thrilled to have Rep Your Water, Tailwater Lodge, Emerald Water Anglers and Soul Fly Outfitters on this episode because they were the first to sign up for the Alliance in their respective categories of brands, lodges, shops and guides, and I am stoked to help share their stories!
