Propas: the Little Things in Life Feb 12, 2025

Show notes

This week on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, David and Ryan explore the little things -- the tapas of props, if you will, or, better -- "propas." It's often easy to get lost in X-Wings and Batwings and Ruby Slippers as those are the sales that steal all the headlines, but this hobby is completely accessible to the movie mad collector at any price point. The guys illuminate all the smaller pieces that collectors can collect, from scripts to crew gifts to call sheets to storyboards. Even if you are a new collector with means and you're not sure how to get in (or how deep you want to get in how fast), these propas are a great starting point. So come to the table, enjoy some sharing plates, and help us make this terrible pun stick. #propas

The Spectacular Season 10 Premiere Episode! Feb 05, 2025

Show notes

Is it more impressive that The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of has already recorded ten seasons or that we're entering our 6th year of making this podcast for very little money? Either way, David and Ryan are thrilled to be joined by "new" collector Larry Chalkley as he talks about the conversion therapy he experienced listening to this fine podcast. After being a replica collector for twenty-five years, Larry became hooked on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, saw the light and switched teams to become a collector of originals. Hear his fascinating story, what he bought first, what he bought next, how many replicas he sold to fund his new obsession, where he's going with his collection and, of course, what his "holy grail" (quiet Dave) piece might be. Bienvenue, saison dix! Or is it dix saison?

The Los Angeles Fire Disaster Special Jan 16, 2025

Show notes

It was an awful week in movieland. Thousands of people lost their homes in two different wildfires that consumed a hundred years of memory and history and likely resulted in the loss of countless pieces of film and television memorabilia. David first shares his own harrowing experience being within sight of the Hollywood fire, facing evacuations from his family's home and his collection's home, and what he took with him when he had limited time to make decisions. The guys pore over the enormity of the tragedy, how it impacts their view of their collections and collecting, how you can prepare for the un-preparable as a collector, and the dreaded question on so many collectors' minds these days: what happens when you call the insurance company and tell them your whole collection is gone? This episode is brought to you by the World Central Kitchen. Please donate to their tremendous wildfire disaster relief efforts in Los Angeles. http://donate.wck.org/

Collectors vs. Dealers Dec 11, 2024

Show notes

On a guest-free (and auction-catalog-free!) episode of The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, David and Ryan delve into a sticky topic: what separates the collector from the dealer. In a hobby where many dealers also collect, the delineation can be fuzzy — and therein lies the problem. Drawing from their long experience navigating these murky waters, the guys provide their opinion on why this distinction is so important and why (they believe, at least), it is absolute.

Bill Hunt of the Digital Bits - First Blood, Part 2 Nov 27, 2024

Show notes

David and Ryan begin part two of their killer discussion with Bill Hunt by reviewing the results of the recent Propstore auction and Heritage's Power Rangers auction. They then invite Bill back on to finish the discussion about all things 4K, including the recent controversial James Cameron transfers and their weird AI process, and they then ask Bill about the holy grail of all home video collectors: the original, un-fuc, we mean un-altered, Star Wars trilogy. Bill then talks about his own obsession as a world-renowned collector of authentic space mission patches! Part 2 is 4K the fun!

The Digital Bits’ Bill Hunt (Part 1) Nov 20, 2024

Show notes

On a very special episode of your favorite props podcast (meaning: no auction coverage; you’re welcome), David and Ryan are joined by the editor-in-chief of the singular physical media resource, The Digital Bits. Bill and The Bits have covered home theater and physical media since the dawn of the DVD era almost 30 years ago. He chats with the guys about the 4K format, where it’s been and where it’s going, those weird James Cameron remasters and of course, collecting physical media. It was such a good discussion, we had to break it into two parts!

Happy Catalog Day! Nov 19, 2024

Show notes

In the super-sized mid-season finale, Ryan and Dave get a sneak-preview of the new Prop Store December auction catalog from owner and founder Stephen Lane. Join the guys on a page-by-page journey through the catalog as they chat BATMAN cowls, hear a cool story about finding David Bowie's crystal ball, try to figure out where in their houses they might hang the original PARAMOUNT logo, talk STAR WARS (of course) -- and their not-dispassionate feelings about the Special Editions -- and they break rules number 1 and 2 by talking a lot about FIGHT CLUB and Brad Pitt’s wardrobe. And what will Dave and Ryan be bidding on?

It's Alive! The Propstore Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction - November 14-17 Nov 13, 2024

Show notes

David and Ryan have a lively one for you that begins with Ryan ranting about the state of collectors and collecting (what else is new). Dave then distracts him with the auction at hand, and the guys highlight the great stuff you may have missed from days 2 and 3 of the auction before covering their patented "categories" discussion, highlighting the props that they wish they were sophisticated enough to buy, what they won't be buying, what they should be buying, and maybe what they will be buying come auction day. They of course also call out the things that their wives would love them for buying, divorce them for buying, and what their kids would want. And it wouldn't be an auction episode without discussing the worst Prometheus props. Do I hear $100,000?

You can also watch this episode on YouTube where we have the catalog on screen as we call out each lot! https://youtube.com/live/ImJwHxo_c6E?feature=share
