    Show notes

Synopsis: The Straits Times analyses Singapore's latest news and announcements in this weekly podcast.

The Straits Times' Zakir Hussain, Singapore editor at The Straits Times, speaks with Money FM 89.3's Timothy Goh and Bharati Jagdish.

The number of marriages and divorces shot up after the first Covid-19 pandemic year of 2020 disrupted both nuptials and break-ups.

A total of 28,329 couples wed last year, a 25.1 per cent jump from 2020, based on statistics released by the Department of Statistics (DOS) on Wednesday (July 6).

Meanwhile, there were 7,890 marital dissolutions last year, a 13.4 per cent increase from 2020. Marital dissolutions refer to both divorces and annulments.

In this week's episode, the team discusses the top factor that could have contributed to these rising figures and the socio-economic impact of these trends.

S1E86: What do you say to a child facing trauma? Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

The Institute of Mental Health or IMH is adopting trauma-informed care throughout the organisation. It's an approach that assumes that a person is more likely than not to have experienced a traumatic event. And it seeks to not re-traumatise patients or blame them for their efforts to manage their symptoms. In trauma-informed care, you would ask "What happened to you?” instead of "What's wrong with you?"

In the second part of our series on trauma-informed care, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks to Ms Tracy Wee. Principal Medical Social Worker at the Institute of Mental Health. She finds out how parents can make use of the approach to help their children, who may have been bullied or experienced a traumatic event.

In the earlier episode on trauma-informed care, Joyce hosted Dr Ann-Marie Aboud Lo Castro, principal clinical psychologist at the department of developmental psychiatry and the project lead of the trauma-informed care approach at IMH. They discussed what trauma-informed care is about, the common traumatic events among children seeking help today and how the approach can benefit others.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

    1:34 Importance of being trauma-informed

3:16 How can parents cope with their children's mental problems?

7:30 What can parents do to support their children?

10:01 What should parents avoid doing?

16:14 Tips for parents to deal with children's trauma

S1E13: More Govt support given to cushion impact of GST hike if need arises Jul 04, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: The Straits Times analyses Singapore's latest news and announcements in this weekly podcast.

The Straits Times' Zakir Hussain, Singapore editor at The Straits Times, speaks with Money FM 89.3's Timothy Goh and Bharati Jagdish.

The Government will continue to monitor inflation closely and is prepared to do more if the economic situation worsens significantly, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in Parliament on Monday (July 4).

He said the $6.6 billion Assurance Package, which aims to cushion households from the impact of the looming goods and services tax (GST) increase, still holds as it was designed with a buffer in case of higher inflation.

In this week's episode, the team discusses how far the Government plans to cushion the impact of the impending GST increase given rising inflation and higher prices for Singapore households.

    Show notes

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Globally, there has been a surge in climate lawsuits against governments and companies for failing to act on climate change and for polluting the environment. And as climate impacts are felt more strongly, the number of cases is likely to rise, as vulnerable communities, youth and environmental groups turn to the courts to drive change and find solutions.

In this episode, The Straits Times’ environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty discuss the rise of climate litigation with Mr Sean Tseng, a legal consultant for global NGO ClientEarth and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law in Singapore.

ClientEarth specialises in using the power of the law to take on powerful corporations and governments to force them to act on climate change, protect nature and reduce air pollution.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

    1:32 What is climate litigation?

7:08 Why are there more climate lawsuits being filed?

12:16 How is ClientEarth approaching climate litigation in Asia?

China, which has maintained some of the world's strictest entry requirements, eased its quarantine policy for international arrivals in late June, 2022.

    Show notes

Synopsis: Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times tackles the talking points in Singapore sport.
In this episode, ST sports correspondent David Lee chats with former Valencia president Anil Murthy about his highs and lows running the Spanish football club.
The Singaporean was Valencia president for five out of the eight tumultuous seasons under Singaporean tycoon Peter Lim. While they won a King's Cup in 2019 and qualified for the Champions League thrice, there was also a high turnover of managers and players. And in May 2022, Murthy also left the club under a shroud of controversy.
