S1E93: Understanding mental health stigma Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

Mental health stigma is what happens when a person with a mental illness is seen in a negative light. It can lead to discrimination, as a person may be treated differently because of his or her mental illness. This stigma often stems from a lack of understanding of mental illness.

In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks to Ms Porsche Poh, the executive director of Silver Ribbon (Singapore), about her work in combating mental health stigma. Silver Ribbon is a non-profit organisation that aims to combat mental health stigma through improving mental health literacy. She co-founded Silver Ribbon in 2006 with Helen Lee and Sally Choo, who were then her colleagues at the Institute of Mental Health.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

4:03 Effects of mental health stigma

7:29 Work-life mental health: What can companies do to improve employee's mental health

10:47 What can be done to reduce mental health stigma in Singapore

    12:02 Adversities Silver Ribbon faced

In the podcast, Porsche mentioned that there’s a Beyond The Label media guide for journalists reporting on mental health issues. This guide was launched in 2021 by Singapore’s National Council of Social Service under its Beyond The Label campaign that seeks to address the stigmas faced by persons with mental health conditions.

S1E87: Business, the power behind the green transition Oct 16, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

The corporate world is a vital ally in the fight against climate change. Businesses are major sources of greenhouse gas emissions heating up the planet. But they are also major drivers of change. Their investments in green energy and transport, low-carbon supply chains, green data centres – and more – can drive positive change in government policies and consumer behaviour.

Yet some corporate actors are still hampering climate action by failing to use their financial clout and influence to change for the better. Driven by vested interests that see cutting carbon as hurting their bottom line or simply not believing in the need to change, some powerful businesses are increasingly out of step with the rest of the world, especially when the urgency to cut emissions grows along with the deadly nature of climate impacts, from heatwaves to floods to storms.

In this episode, The Straits Times’ environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty discuss these issues with Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who is director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University in the United States, and is recognised as a global leader in sustainable development.

    Highlights of conversation (click/tap above):

1:40 What defines a good company?

5:25 What are some examples of good corporate actors?

8:05 Why are some companies so fearful of change?

15:35 What outcomes from COP27 will help businesses focus on action on climate change?

18:03 What is the best way forward on climate finance?

Produced by: Audrey Tan (audreyt@sph.com.sg), David Fogarty (dfogarty@sph.com.sg), Ernest Luis, Eden Soh and Fa'izah Sani

S1E13: Is the Nominated Member of Parliament scheme losing its relevance? (Pt 1) Oct 13, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every second and fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' Insight editor Grace Ho takes a hard look at political and social issues of the day with her expert guests.

The Nominated Member of Parliament, or NMP, scheme was introduced by then-First Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in November 1989. It was meant to evolve a more consensual style of government where alternative views would be heard and constructive dissent accommodated. But 32 years later, and with 10 opposition MPs in the House, is the scheme still necessary?

In the studio to share their experiences are two former NMPs: Anthea Ong, also the editor of a new book called The Nominated Member Of Parliament Scheme: Are Unelected Voices Still Necessary In Parliament?; and Nicholas Fang, managing director of Blackdot Research.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

1:28 Why Anthea decided to write a book on NMPs

4:16 Nicholas on the role of NMPs, and why sectors such as the arts and sports deserve a voice in Parliament

9:20 What does embracing the NMP scheme look like, versus merely accepting it

11:32 On whether the scheme is losing its relevance
