S1E91: No breakthroughs, but Xi-Biden meeting in itself is progress: Asian Insider Nov 20, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents Asian views of the United States.

It has been a busy month in Asia for diplomacy, with the highlight a much-anticipated, over three-hour meeting in Bali, Indonesia on the occasion of the G20 between President Xi Jinping of China and President Joe Biden of the United States.

In this episode on regional summitry, Nirmal Ghosh hosts Curtis Chin, chair of the Milken Institute’s operations in Asia and a former US Ambassador to the Asian Development Bank; and Murray Hiebert, senior associate at the Centre for Security and International Studies (CSIS) and also head of research at Bower Group Asia.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

1:50 Not about breakthroughs or new agreements, but about these two leaders getting together and talking

2:53 Fundamental positions did not change in Bali, and that was not a surprise

3:29 Why some in China are saying self-reliance is good for them, if they are not able to depend on the US

5:24 Little space between Republicans and Democrats in attitude and tone, on China

7:00 US Congress could pass the Taiwan Policy Act, which will again irritate Beijing

12:00 One legacy of the G20, coupled with its chairmanship of Asean in 2023, will be to spotlight Indonesia - an important country that does not get due recognition globally

S1E89: Is there a limit to adapting to climate change? COP27 in Egypt Nov 17, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

At the COP27 climate talks here in Egypt, a key focus is how to help poorer, more vulnerable nations cope with increasingly extreme weather events that threaten their homes, their jobs and the food they grow. Adapting to climate impacts has become an urgent need for billions of people around the globe, yet the money to help them is a fraction of what's needed.

Wealthy nations are under pressure at COP27 to give more climate cash since they are most responsible for the emissions that are making the world's weather more dangerous. And few places are more vulnerable to climate impacts than Africa.

In this episode, ST's climate change editor David Fogarty speaks with Dr Debra Roberts, a leading scientist with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and a global expert on adaptation and urban resilience. Dr Roberts is also head of the Sustainable and Resilient City Initiatives Unit in Durban, South Africa.

    Highlights of conversation (click/tap above):

1:43 Why has adapting to climate change become so important?

3:19 “Africa’s biggest adaptation need is basic development”

6:09 Why is it important to also look at how nature is being affected by climate change?

11:58 Is it possible to make cities climate-proof?

14:39 Is there a limit to adapting to climate change?

S1E95: Protect your health and your wealth from your 20s Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

In this episode, we look at why you should start insuring yourself against critical illnesses when you are in your 20s or early 30s.

Cancer, heart attacks and stroke are three common critical illnesses in Singapore. We are living longer but we may be spending more time in poor health. Looking at government statistics, we can see that in Singapore, cardiovascular disease accounted for 32 per cent of all deaths in 2021. This means that almost one out of three deaths in Singapore is due to heart disease or stroke. Spotting a stroke early can help to save a life. Recovery after a stroke, however, may take a long time..
Most millennials and Gen Z are busy establishing their careers. Growing their wealth is likely to take priority over protecting their health, but this is the time to think about health insurance.

ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo finds out more from neurosurgeon Dr Chou Ning from Chou Neuroscience Clinic and Eddy Lim, who is the head of Propositions and Portfolio Management, at Great Eastern. This episode is brought to you by Great Eastern: https://str.sg/w9qr

    Highlights (click/tap above):

1:15 Incidence of stroke among younger age groups is about 10-15% of entire stroke cohort

3:15 Among survivors of stroke, 50% would still be chronically disabled after one year

4:10 Risk of recurring stroke within the next five years

6:39 Avoiding placing financial burden on your parents; plans that can cost as low as $20 a month to cover critical illnesses

9:11 Dr Chou on a recent case of a healthy 46-year-old patient who came in with some weakness in his left hand; eventually diagnosed with a small ischaemic stroke

11:54 Tip: Consider cover critical illnesses one time, and covering recurrence with a rider for a second payout
