S1E103: New drug spells hope for patients struggling with obesity Apr 04, 2023
    Show notes

Might this miracle drug be the answer to curing obesity?

Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

Obesity is a huge and complex problem. It is linked to Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, back pain and so many other health issues. However, there aren’t many anti-obesity medications out there.

Wegovy is not just a new prescription drug for those with obesity or high-risk body mass index, but one that is more effective and better tolerated than the current crop of treatments.

Its active ingredient is semaglutide, which was first developed to help Type 2 diabetes patients with blood sugar control, but then found to be effective in helping them lose weight as well.

Another brand of semaglutide called Ozempic, which is a lower-dose version meant for those with Type 2 diabetes had hit the market earlier. Both Ozempic and Wegovy have gone viral on social media for their off-label use as a weight loss drug.

In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks to Dr Khoo Chin Meng, the head and senior consultant at the National University Hospital’s Division of Endocrinology to find out more about the obesity problem and how semaglutide can help those with the chronic disease.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

1:22 Is the obesity problem getting worse in Singapore?

3:01 Is Ozempic the answer to the obesity problem in Singapore?

    5:36 Side effects of Ozempic

7:15 Cost and accessibility of Ozempic

9:56 Do you need to take Ozempic regularly for it to be effective?

S1E96: Rise of CSOs or Chief Sustainability Officers Apr 02, 2023
    Show notes

Find out the qualities of a good chief sustainability officer.

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Climate change and the growing biodiversity crisis are having far reaching impacts on businesses. Governments are adopting tougher regulations, too, and businesses also have to be much more transparent about their environmental footprints and how they plan to improve.

For instance, the Singapore Exchange has mandated climate risk disclosures for listed companies from this year and companies are increasingly rated on their sustainability policies and practices.

Pressure is also coming from investors and consumers who are demanding businesses go green and clean up their supply chains.

That’s where chief sustainability officers, or CSOs, come in. They can help firms navigate this changing world and help save corporate reputations – and many companies are finding that going green is good for business.

To find out more about the rise of the CSO, ST's climate editor David Fogarty hosts Ms Cherine Fok. A partner at KPMG Singapore’s environmental, social and governance team, she works closely with firms making the transition.

    Highlights of conversation (click/tap above):

3:20 CSOs are change-makers – their key role is to bring the organisation together to drive change

5:04 Qualities of an effective CSO

7:57 Where should a CSO sit within a company?

8:45 Why the CSO role and studying sustainability is crucial for youth and the next generation of business leaders

S1E3: HK star Leslie Cheung's queer legacy: Can I Tell You Something Crazy? Mar 31, 2023
    Show notes

April 1, 2023 is the 20th anniversary of the Asian pop icon's death.

Synopsis: Can I Tell You Something Crazy is a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, which examines with fresh eyes, events that shook Asian media and entertainment.

On April 1, 2003, the world was shocked by the loss of one of the most beloved, enduring and seductive stars to ever grace screens. Singer and actor Leslie Cheung died by suicide at the age of 46, leaping to his death from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong, after succumbing to a battle with severe depression.

2003 was a dark year for Hong Kong. The Sars epidemic ravaged the city. Yet, Cheung's death ignited a wave of public grieving, with people lining the streets outside his memorial to mourn him.

The singer-actor was beloved and known for his androgynous style onstage and his acclaimed performances in films like Days Of Being Wild (1990), Farewell My Concubine (1993) and Happy Together (1997) onscreen. Off screen, his personal life, especially his sexuality, was highly scrutinised.

Host Jan Lee celebrates Cheung’s life on the 20th anniversary of his death. She looks at the star’s legacy as a queer icon - both in his pop music and his film roles - and how his tragic end highlighted the stigma around mental health and his own sexual orientation.

S1E24: Budget 2023: Start of ‘new era’ in running post-pandemic Singapore? Mar 28, 2023
    Show notes

Fair, inclusive, a new era: Do these two words and a phrase best underline the spirit of Budget 2023?

Synopsis: Every second and fourth Monday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at social issues of the day with guests.

Singapore's Parliament has passed in early March, the Government’s $123.7 billion spending plans for the coming financial year.

In this episode, ST's podcast editor Ernest Luis hosts colleague and deputy news editor Grace Ho, who monitored around 70 hours of speeches and debates in Parliament in the past few weeks. What does she make of them?

    Highlights (click/tap above):

2:16 What was truly fair? Those who can pay more, will pay more; Grace highlights buyer’s stamp duties for higher-value residential and non-residential properties as a "fair move"

2:52 Regarding those unhappy with the higher tax rates for residential property in excess of $1.5 million, these people are actually part of that top 21 per cent of Singaporeans living in private housing

5:03 Can the Government realistically please everyone? Eg: The change in Working Mother’s Child Relief from a percentage to fixed dollar relief, will better help lower-income mothers

6:19 What was truly inclusive? The announcements for public housing, initiatives for persons with disabilities, preventing lower-income families from "falling through the cracks"

10:31 New era for Government initiatives, but will it turn out to be a new era for the way Singaporean parents or employers think?

17:08 What happens when Parliament - in its customary mid-term break now - reconvenes on April 10

Produced by: Ernest Luis (ernest@sph.com.sg), Hadyu Rahim and Paxton Pang

S1E95: Politics of hate fuelling religious majoritarianism across South Asia: Asian Insider Mar 23, 2023
    Show notes

Is there liberal opposition to what is going on, even in a more diverse India with a raucous democratic tradition?

Synopsis: Each fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents an Asian perspective of the biggest global talking points with expert guests.

In this episode, we discuss how and why, across the complex region of South Asia, majorities are convinced that minorities are a threat.

South Asia is a region of some two billion, but right-wing politics and religious majoritarianism, the arms of the state and the media, are coming together to threaten democracy and the health and longevity of states. The politics of hate in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is fuelling, and feeds off, religious majoritarianism.

    Show notes

The winner of the Best South-east Asia Act award at the 2019 MTV Europe Music Awards is our second guest in this new music channel.

Synopsis: Each month, The Straits Times invites music acts to its podcast studio.

In the second episode of Music Lab, ST's music correspondent Eddino Abdul Hadi hosts award-winning Singapore singer, songwriter, and producer Jasmine Sokko.

The enigmatic artiste is also known for covering part of her face with a mask, and has never revealed her full face in publicity photos.

The singer, who shuttles between China and Singapore, almost had her music career derailed during the pandemic lockdowns. But she is now back in 2023 with new music with Winter, a single that marks a new chapter in her artistry.

S1E2: Is it over for Joseph Schooling? - Hard Tackle Mar 21, 2023
    Show notes

Can Singapore's only Olympic champion ever make a comeback?

Synopsis: Every fourth Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times dives into a sports topic and tackles the hard questions with its guests on Hard Tackle.

For the first time since his 2011 debut, Joseph Schooling will not represent Singapore at the Cambodia SEA Games in May. After withdrawing from the swim team headed for Cambodia, the Republic’s only Olympic champion said on March 1: “After careful consideration with my team, I have decided to pull out of the SEA Games. This was not an easy decision, but I am currently not at the level at which I hold myself to perform.”

On the back of Schooling’s decision to withdraw, ST’s Hard Tackle dives into the inevitable discussion on whether we have seen the last of our Olympic winner.

Former national swimmer David Lim and Tao Li - Asian Games winner and a former teammate of Schooling's - join ST sports reporter Deepanraj Ganesan to discuss Schooling’s current predicament, if retirement is on the cards and how Schooling’s decline could have been prevented.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

3:20 On Joseph Schooling’s current predicament of training while serving national service

7:38 Have we seen the last of Schooling at a competitive level?

9:58 Could Schooling be targeting an Asian Games return?

    15:40 Understanding Schooling’s regression

21:00 What lessons can be drawn from this saga?
