Life Picks Ep 66: Jay Chou's 2019 Singapore stop; where to find less salty and spicy mala

    17:33 mins

Synopsis: Every Thursday, The Straits Times highlights the best films, concerts, restaurants and arts events you can catch in Singapore over the coming weeks.

This week, Money FM's Claressa Monteiro chats with ST assistant Life editor Boon Chan about the highly-anticipated Jay Chou concert on Jan 10 &11.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Chou's career, and the Mandopop star will be coming to Singapore for his Carnival World Tour.

STFood online editor Hedy Khoo shares about Lai Jie Jia Seafood, which sells a variety of fresh seafood dishes, but finds the Mala Hai Luo especially impressive. Hai Luo is known as "gong gong" locally, and as the chef is from Shandong, his cooking style is slightly less salty and less spicy compared with the typical mala flavour.

Right next to Lai Jie Jia Seafood, in the same coffeeshop, is Lai Jie Jia La Mian, where the noodles are handmade, pulled by the chef himself. Find out more by listening in.

Life Picks Ep 65: Enjoy a musical March and April and Malaysian herbal bak kut teh

    13:25 mins

Synopsis: Every Thursday, The Straits Times highlights the best films, concerts, restaurants and arts events you can catch in Singapore over the coming weeks.

This week, Money FM's Claressa Monteiro chats with ST music correspondent Eddino Abdul Hadi who recommends why we should catch American a cappella stars Pentatonix, who will be back in Singapore to perform at The Star Theatre on Feb 11, 2020.

March is a good month for music acts, and you can catch American pop-punk stalwarts Green Day and 80s pop giants A-Ha. Green Day will return to Singapore to perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on March 8, 2020. Norwegian pop trio A-ha, best known for enduring hits such as Take On Me (1984), will perform in Singapore for the first time at Singapore Turf Club on March 21, 2020.

In April, British singer Rita Ora and American rapper A$AP Rocky will be performing at a brand new homegrown music festival. Billed as the region’s first multi-genre music festival, Hydeout will be held over two weekends (April 10, 11, 17 and 18, 2020) at The Meadow, Gardens By The Bay. The initial lineup also includes American rapper Gucci Mane, France’s DJ Snake, Dutch DJs Sam Feldt and San Holo, and Singapore’s own Myrne.

ST food critic Wong Ah Yoke recommends a new bak kut teh outlet at Lorong Liput in Holland Village.

If you're a fan of Malaysian herbal bak kut teh, you no longer have to cross the Causeway to enjoy it. Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh, which started in Kota Tinggi in 1980 and now has two branches in Johor Baru, opened here about two months ago.

    Show notes

Green Pulse Ep 13: A green New Year

    11:52 mins

Synopsis: Green Pulse is an environmental podcast series at The Straits Times which analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

This month, ST’s environment correspondent Audrey Tan (@audreytrp) chats with environmental studies undergraduate Woo Qiyun and sustainability champion Farah Sanwari on environmentally-friendly resolutions for the new year.

The year 2019 marked Singapore’ Year Towards Zero Waste, a year-long campaign that aimed to get people to be more conscious about the amount of waste they produce. In August, the government also announced a new 2030 target of sending about one-third, or 30 per cent, less waste to Semakau Landfill in a bid to help the Republic’s one and only offshore landfill last longer than the projected 2035.

But what is the link between climate change and waste, and what you can do to waste not, want not. Tune in for tips in this episode.

S1E52: Cats v Jojo Rabbit PLUS The Best & Worst of 2019 Dec 29, 2019
    Show notes

Me-OW! It's the end of the year and just as we were preparing our Best & Worst of 2019 list, we had a couple of late entrants into both categories.

Before we get into what elevated and sank the mood in 2019 (they're not necessarily the worst films, we're just very disappointed), Jonathan Roberts and Cheow Sue-Ann delve into some current releases – Tom Hooper's take on Cats and Taika Waititi's boy-with-Hitler-as-a-best-friend war movie, Jojo Rabbit.

Skip to theses times for the different segments.

01.00: Everything wrong with Tom Hooper's Cats – a film that has gone so wrong that it deserves to be seen.

10.40: Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit – a film so good it's effectively the best film of 2019 (according to Jonathan)

15.00: Best & Worst of 2019. Joker, Parasite, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Aladdin, Lion King, Us, Marriage Story – listen on to find out where they rank.

Thanks for listening and here's to amazing films in 2020.
