    15:49 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change in this podcast series.

Singapore has become the first country to approve the sale of a cultured meat product -- chicken bites by Californian start-up Eat Just. They will be available from Dec 18 at 1880, a private members’ club at Robertson Quay.

S1E50: Pros and cons of online doctor reviews: Health Check Ep 50 Dec 15, 2020
    Show notes

Health Check Ep 50: Pros and cons of online doctor reviews

    11:51 mins

Synopsis: This is a fortnightly podcast series on Wednesdays by The Straits Times.

Today’s episode is on online doctor reviews.

Recently, the Singapore medical council (SMC) advised doctors to refrain from participating in online search engine optimisation platforms that make use of patient feedback and ratings, as these can be considered patient testimonials.

It all started when a group of doctors cried foul over not having the option to pull out of online platform DoctorxDentist (DxD) that offered reviews, in addition to health content.

The start-up had listed the names of doctors it found on the SMC directory. The Singapore Medical Association and the Health Ministry subsequently got involved.

DxD has since switched to an opt-in algorithm, and removed all the reviews on its platform. Although the DxD saga is over, the issue of online reviews is not.

In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks with Associate Professor Jeremy Lim, the director of global health at the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health on the pros and cons of online doctor reviews.

#PopVultures Ep 37: The Crown and all that Diana Drama!

    31:15 mins

Synopsis: The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood industries.

This week the #PopVultures Jan Lee and Yeo Sam Jo wade into the world of prestige drama - Netflix's hit series The Crown, about the British royal family and the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

In Season Four, its latest season, The Crown covered what everyone was waiting for - the toxic, dramatic and eventually tragic marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Palace insiders and friends of Prince Charles have lambasted Season Four - calling it an inaccurate and unfair version of events. British culture secretary Oliver Dowden even wrote to Netflix, hoping the service would add a disclaimer declaring The Crown as a work of fiction.

The #PopVultures recap some of the royal drama and talk about what events in the show made the British royal family so unhappy, and share their own thoughts on the show.

They also discuss whether the royal family's reaction to the series triggered a Streisand effect - unintentionally contributing to the popularity or publicising something one intended to hide.

Also, Sam Jo imitates Margaret Thatcher! Tune in!

Editor Says Ep 7: Why we should not refuse the Covid-19 vaccine

    4:15 mins

Synopsis: Every Friday afternoon, senior editors from The Straits Times give their take on the top news of the week, why it matters and what’s next.

The Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez says that given the near miracle of the breakthrough Covid-19 vaccine, it would be unconscionable if people refuse it while expecting healthcare workers to put their lives on the line.

He adds that in this battle, "no one is safe until we are all safe".
