Health Check Ep 66: How parents can promote good mental health in children

    21:10 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

Parents play an important role in promoting good mental health in their children. They are often the first to notice if a child is having problems with his or her emotions.

In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks with Ms Andrea Chan, the assistant director of Touch Mental Wellness, about the things parents can do to make sure their children are mentally healthy. She also talks about the stigma associated with mental health and how she helped a young person get the help she needs.

This is the last of a two-part series on youth mental health. In the previous episode, we touched on the stressors faced by young people in this pandemic, what parents can say to their children about the recent River Valley High School murder case, and the signs and symptoms of mental distress to watch out for.

S1E56: IPCC rings alarm bells for humanity: Green Pulse Ep 56 Aug 15, 2021
    Show notes

Green Pulse Ep 56: IPCC rings alarm bells for humanity

    18:13 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Recent extreme weather events, from heat waves and fires in North America, Greece and Turkey to deadly record floods in China have caused global alarm. Scientists say man-made climate change made all of them possible and it is just a taste of the future unless all nations take stronger action and cut greenhouse emissions.

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has just released a major assessment on climate science that also looks into the future. The findings by IPCC’s Working Group 1 are alarming. Climate change is accelerating and nowhere is untouched by changing weather patterns. The world is also on course to breach a key temperature threshold of 1.5 deg C during the 2030s.

In this episode, ST environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty talk to one scientist who was involved in the latest report, Dr Gregory Flato. Dr Flato is from the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis at Environment and Climate Change Canada.

    They discuss the following points:

    1. Why the IPCC’s latest report card on the climate is so significant, and key takeaways from it. (2:09)
    2. Why limiting global warming to 1.5 deg C above pre-industrial levels is so important, and what happens if this threshold is breached. (6:25)
    3. Climate projections made in the latest report are based on emissions scenarios, which differ from previous IPCC reports. What are these differences? (11:20)
    4. The latest report is just one part out of a series that will make up the IPCC’s sixth assessment report. Two more reports are expected next year. What will they be about? (15:14)

#PopVultures Ep 51: Kris Wu implodes and the #MeToo movement in Chinese entertainment

    29:41 mins

Synopsis: The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood scene.

In this episode, host Jan Lee covers the scandal and legal controversy surrounding Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu, 30, who has been detained by the Beijing police on allegations of rape, after Chinese teen influencer Du Meizhu accused of Wu raping her. She said that she has been contacted by other women who are also Wu's victims.

This scandal has rocked Chinese entertainment and brands previously endorsed by Wu, including major fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, have rushed to drop their partnerships. Chinese authorities have also shut down Wu's Weibo account and some 4,000 fan accounts along with him.

Jan runs down the saga, reflects on what this might mean for China's burgeoning #MeToo movement and gives her own thoughts on how this scandal has highlighted toxic fan culture and the danger of believing only in perfect victims.

Here's a quick look at what she covers:
