George Lucas tell Gareth Edwards not to screw it up! (comicbook.com via My TF1)
“He said, ‘don’t screw it up,'” Edwards first joked with a smile when talking about Lucas visiting and any potential advice. “I think there are two things that are incredibly surreal that you can do in your life. Number 2 is having to show George Lucas your Star Wars movie. Like, that was really crazy. And I think number 1 is to be George Lucas and have someone show you a Star Wars movie. So I felt for him, and he was incredibly gracious.”
Edwards: “He joked a lot about how we should do more in the computer, and not build so much,” Edwards revealed. That’s, of course, pointing at the heavy criticism Lucas received for the high level of CGI in the prequel trilogy, Episode I – III. “We didn’t take his advice. We tried to shoot as much in-camera as possible.”
Carrie Fisher’s other Star Wars revelations on Late Show with Stephen Colbert Audio clip 1:47
Gareth Edwards says no opening crawl to French TV site (My TF1)
“There is no opening crawl. But there is a prologue at the beginning of the film that takes place 15 years before the action of the film and that is how the action is exposed. Our film comes from the text of Episode IV…if we give the text, it would be endless. We really had to differentiate Rogue One from the rest of the saga.”
END SPOILERS
We wonder how each Star Wars film would have been critiqued if only the first 28 minutes of each was shown.

Without giving away plot, what were your impressions of it?
It is a film that is in many ways a really great World War II movie, and I loved that about it. But it also has this huge, huge heart at the center of it, and that was the one thing I just didn’t want to discount. Yes, it’s an action movie, and it’s a Star Wars film, and it has all the things that you would come to expect and love about that, but I didn’t want to forget that it was also an incredibly emotional movie as well. That was what really pulled me in. I love working on projects that have an emotional center to them – and not manufactured emotion either, even though, you know, [laughs] it’s a weird thing to say because literally that’s all we’re doing, manufacturing emotion.
Did you incorporate many elements of John Williams’ score?
I think absolutely there are a couple of times when you want to hit upon something that was from the past. For me, even as a fan, it was about going, “Oh, this particular idea would be great if we did it here. I would want to see that if I were watching a Star Wars movie.” As a kid who grew up with John’s music and who was catapulted in this direction because of what he did, I had a very specific idea of what I wanted to use and how I wanted to use it. That being said, I’d say the score is 95 percent original but with little moments [of Williams’ classic score] here or there to accent. If I were sitting in that seat and I heard that, it would totally raise the hairs on my neck.
Did you get to do your take on the Imperial March?
[Laughs] Maaaaaaybe.

Edwards says that sitting in the department was “a helmet we loved but didn’t know where to put it; there wasn’t really an opportunity to use it”. But when Lucas was given a tour of the design department, the father of Star Wars “walked past it and went ‘That’s cool, I like that'”.
Unsurprisingly that led to a renewed determination to put the aforementioned mysterious helmet in the film, as the offhand comment by Lucas spurred Edwards into action, and at the mention of the helmet they “looked at each other like, ‘OK, we have to put that in the film!'” Sadly, Edwards stopped short of giving us a description of the helmet in question so it’ll be hard to spot in the movie, but hopefully he’ll let us in on which one it is after the movie is released.

SPOILER/RUMOR: “An Accurate Depiction of Luke Skywalker’s Costume in Episode VIII” (makingstarwars.net)
“We were able to get Lumberjack Nick to do an accurate representation of Luke Skywalker’s Star Wars: Episode VIII costume. This depiction is from a training sequence where Rey is frustrated with Luke’s teachings. Nick decided to go with the mechanical look of the hand because we couldn’t tell if Luke had a robotic hand or the black glove in this sequence. He also didn’t appear to have a lightsaber at all but was holding either a thin spear, thin walking stick or a piece of junk so we gave him a placeholder object for his hand in the picture. The point of the photo is that you can see what the design is for Luke’s costume used in those rainy sequences between Skywalker and Rey. Rey’s costume is also accurate:”
“In the film, the costume is apparently just filthy most of the time. Skywalker is more like Yoda on Dagobah in terms of style than the white regal costume he wore to meet Rey at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This costume gets a lot dirtier in the film than the cartoon depiction by Lumberjack Nick. You will also notice there isn’t really any belt or anything for his lightsaber.”
SPOILER/RUMOR: Kylo Ren may be wearing Darth Vader’s cape (makingstarwars.com)
“According to sources, Kylo Ren is wearing a Darth Vader cape in Star Wars: Episode VIII. The cape is said to be like the one Darth Vader wears in The Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi. However, the cape does not have the same chain clasp. It is not entirely clear if this cape is one Kylo made to resemble that of his grandfather’s or if he actually procured one of Darth Vader’s capes that probably fell into the hands of collectors in the Star Wars galaxy.”“In the film, the costume is apparently just filthy most of the time.

Alden Ehrenreich, aka “Young Han Solo”, was interviewed by Interview magazine:
MARTIN: You’re in London right now. What are you over there to do?
EHRENREICH: Prep stuff for Star Wars.
MARTIN: Is that going to be shot entirely over there?
EHRENREICH: I actually don’t know. They shoot the Star Wars films in England. But I think they also shoot them in other places. I’m not sure exactly where the locations will be.
MARTIN: What kind of prep have you been doing?
EHRENREICH: Well, I had an audition process that went on for a long time, and I got to spend a lot of time with the guys who are directing the film. Getting to be around them and being around the world a little bit has been the main experience so far. I did my audition on the Millennium Falcon for one of my screen tests, which was pretty cool.

Giacchino: “John and I have known each other for a while and he’s always been a great giver of wisdom. He is a great teacher, even when he is not directly teaching you. Growing up listening to him — he was one of my biggest indirect teachers. Working on this films I am constantly reminded that it was Star Wars that pushed me in this direction.”
Edwards: “Events take place that just shatter her life and send her off to basically be raised as a soldier in the midst of a war. She ends up not the person she was supposed to be.”
Edwards: “Even though we’re not telling the story of Luke Skywalker, it was important to me that we capture the same themes and emotion. But the film doesn’t unfold how you think. It’s not the same path as Star Wars.”
