Bob Iger: Star Wars Slowdown (THR)

Many believe Disney should pump the breaks and not put out a Star Wars movie each year.

I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.

Finally, some Disneyland purists are upset that there’s going to be booze for sale in Star Wars Land.

We have to be careful we don’t let people drink and then go on Autopia. (Laughs.)

Funny. Walt did specifically say no booze at Disneyland.

Yeah, except I think Walt had a nip or two in his apartment at night. (Laughs.) I am a big believer in tradition. This just seemed like one of those traditions that if we changed it the empire wasn’t going to crumble.

Adam Driver to host 44th season premiere of SNL (Variety)

Adam Driver will host the upcoming “Saturday Night Live” Season 44 premiere, NBC announced Monday. The “Star Wars” and “BlacKkKlansman” actor will be joined by musical guest Kanye West. This will be Driver’s second time hosting the long-running sketch series while it will be West’s seventh appearance since 2005.

Star Wars Resistance takes place six months before TFA (Jose Ruiz)

Episode IX principal photography will end February (Geek Worldwide)

Filming on Star Wars: Episode IX commenced on August 1st and we now have an idea when it will wrap things up. Omega Underground has learned that filming is expected to be completed by sometime in February.

Dominic Monaghan joins Episode IX (Hollywood Reporter)

The actor starred in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Lost’ as well as Peter Jacksons ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. Lost star Dominic Monaghan is reuniting with J.J. Abrams. The actor has been cast in Star Wars: Episode IX, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Monaghan rose to prominence thanks to his role as the lovable Hobbit Merry in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, and starred as Charlie Pace on the Abrams-produced Lost from 2004-10 on ABC. He appeared in Duncan Jones’ Netflix movie Mute this year. The actor has been vocal about his interest appearing in a Star Wars movie, and has spoken about broaching the subject with Abrams after the director signed up for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. At the time, Abrams told him he was building a cast of unknowns, akin to the stars of the original 1977 film. Monaghan’s role in Episode IX is unknown.

A Making-of Book for Solo: A Star Wars Story

    • JediNews: Industrial Light & Magic’s Rob Bredow will be releasing a making-of book for Solo: A Star Wars Story (an unofficial image of the front of the book was shown). The hardcover title is currently listed on Amazon as being available for pre-order ($50.00) with a scheduled release date of April 16, 2019.
    • Product Description:

Industrial Light & Magic Presents: Making Solo: A Star Wars Story is an eyewitness account of the film’s production from visual effects supervisor and coproducer Rob Bredow. The book gives readers an intimate glimpse into the journey that Solo took from pre-production, production, and post-production, fully documenting how this film came to the big screen.
Making Solo gives a chronological overview of how this multiple-Academy-Award-winning visual effects company created new worlds, aliens, droids, and vehicles for a galaxy far, far away, including insights into how the train heist on Vandor, L3-37, the Kessel Run, and the reimagined Millennium Falcon were brought to life. A must-have for Star Wars fans, this authorized, all-access book will be an indispensable work for all movie fans and devotees of popular culture.

Tatooine was to be part of another Star Wars spin-off

    • CinemaBlend: Sadly, we don’t fully know what’s going on behind closed doors at Lucasfilm — but according to production designer Neil Lamont, one of the studio’s upcoming-but-stopped projects included a return to the legendary fictional planet Tatooine.
    • Neil Lamont: We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies. So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further.

Updates on Disney’s Upcoming Streaming Service (Variety)

    • Disney CEO Bob Iger said he expects the service will be available at the end of 2019.
    • When it hits the market, the service will include upcoming theatrical releases such as a live-action remake of “Dumbo,” “Captain Marvel,” and the next Avengers sequel. There will also be several films that are made directly for the streaming service, such as a remake of “Lady and the Tramp” and the Anna Kendrick comedy “Noelle.” Original television series will draw on pre-existing Disney properties such as “Monsters Inc.” and “High School Musical.” The hope is that major Disney brands such as Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, as well as NatGeo, which the company is buying from Fox, will all contribute content to the service.
    • “Our first priority is going to be reaching our core Disney fan,” Iger said.
    • Iger suggested that Disney’s streaming service might be a lower cost option to Netflix. He noted that the company’s pricing will reflect its “lower volume” of content. There will also be some notable omissions. Some of Disney’s biggest franchises, such as “Star Wars” movies released before next year, will not be available. They have been licensed to other distributors. “The marketing will make clear that it’s not going to be on there,” said Iger. “But ‘Star Wars’ movies that come out in 2019 and later, you’ll find them there.”
    • A live-action, 10-episode “Star Wars” series from Jon Favreau will cost roughly $100 million and an adaptation of the book “Timmy Failure” boasts a $45 million budget, according to a recent story in the New York Times.
    • New York Times: “…that makes the upcoming Star Wars series one of the most expensive TV shows of all time. To put it into context, the sixth season of Game of Thrones cost something around $10 million an episode, and its final season will cost something around $15 million. The budget for Star Trek: Discovery, which CBS used to launch its own streaming platform, was between $8 and $8.5 million. The budget for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was between $200 to $250 million, and that film made more than $1.3 billion worldwide at the box office.”
    • Looking ahead, Iger said he believes that many Fox franchises and labels will be complementary to Disney’s content. The Disney chief said he was particularly excited to buy back the rights to X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four — Marvel brands that had been licensed to the studio.

Rumor: Jon Favreau’s Live Action Series to Focus on Mandalorians (MakingStarWars)

    • Rumors on Jon Favreau’s live action Star Wars television series have been circulating lately. It is still pretty early to firmly confirm much of this with 100% accurate faith. So please consider this a rumor for now that we have heard from sources who have panned out in the past. For the last few months, we keep hearing the same rumors and the rumors consist of the same general information and the same general beliefs.
    • Sources believe Jon Favreau’s Star Wars live action series, which is set around three years after Return of the Jedi is about the planet Mandalore. It sounds like when the Empire falls, Mandalore falls into a state of turmoil and the series is about restoring Mandalore to its former self and how Mandalore sways will have huge galactic ramifications.

Another Rumor: Disney May Split Episode IX into Two Movies (MovieWeb)

    • Leaks continue to drizzle out of the Lucasfilm base camp, and the latest is that J.J. Abrams and his team are aiming to have the longest film in the franchise with Episode IX. It might be so long, it gets chopped into two movies.
    • With all these characters and new story arcs in place, Star Wars 9 is going to have to be really long.
    • Secrets from the set point to Star Wars 9 being so long, in fact, that Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly considering a Hunger Games move, chopping this final sequel into two parts.
