Learn with Less (stuff), Mask Usage in a Pandemic, and Special Education Moving Online Apr 05, 2020
    Show notes

The crew continues to struggle with stay at home orders and balancing it with their therapy. Michael has moved his private practice a teletherapy setting and he continues to identify ways to improve his therapy delivery. Michelle is adjusting and facing the challenge of working from home while her husband works from home as well and having a young child at home. Michelle’s clinic remains closed but is making plans to open shortly. Matt continues to change the way he is presenting therapy to his students from the school district and still is seeing elderly patients in the home setting. On today’s show we are talking the recent updates on the FDA and sterilization of masks, a study on paper versus cloth masks, looking at special education and kids falling through the cracks, and telepractice success stories. Hours after recording this show, Battelle was approved to use the serialization process for masks. On this week’s Informed SLP update, they look at the research behind hearing aides and young children. We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process. The ASHA spotlight looks at what ASHA is doing for us during this time of pandemic.

The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7.

SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out? We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, like front line workers and SLPs who are working with out Covid-19 positive patients.

SSPOD Due Process: Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. This week’s due process comes from the crew as they hate the way people use racial terms to name the current Covid-19.

Article #1: A recent study shows that the use of cloth masks have a higher infection rate than the surgical masks. Also Ohio based Battelle has identified a way to sanitize N95 masks. At the time of recording, they were awaiting FDA approval to disinfect up to 160,000 masks per day. Hours after recording, the FDA gave them the approval needed.

Article #2: As we move education online, the role of the special education teacher and related staff becomes more difficult. Recent articles look at the risk our students face of falling through the cracks of education.

Interview: Ayelet Marinovich is an SLP and the host of the Learn with Less Podcast. On her show and in her books she addresses the challenges and realities of early parenthood, and the information you need to know about early childhood.

The Informed SLP: Keeping anything on a toddler that the toddler doesn’t want there is one of life’s great challenges. Hats, sunglasses, pants… the struggle is real. When you add hearing aids to that mix you’d better put on a hard hat because there may be things flying at your head. So if you work with toddlers who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH), you are 100% going to get parents coming in saying that they have the hearing aids, but the toddler just will not wear them.

ASHA Spotlight: COVID-19 has created many challenges to our daily lives. One of the ways ASHA can help you during this difficult time is to offer you free continuing education.

SSPOD Due Process: Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. Hit up the show and let us know your due Process

Interview: Angie is a Certified Life Coach and School-Based SLP. She lives with her husband and two little girls in the Rochester NY area. Her passion is to rescue SLPs who are feeling overwhelmed, overworked and trapped in a career they're "supposed" to love. She shows her clients how to reclaim their energy, create more time and generate resources. Her mission is to help whip-smart SLPs do less, be more, and thrive with joy in the one life they have.

The Informed SLP: AMR 2.0: Take a deep breath and say “buh-buh-buh” as quickly as you can, as long as you can, until you run out of breath. Alternating Motion Rates (AMRs) have been a staple in clinical evaluations of motor speech performance for decades; they are easy to use and can tell us a lot about the neuromuscular integrity of persons with suspected motor speech disorders.

Crying in Your Car, Predicting Dyslexia, and Dehumanizing and Social Skills Feb 06, 2020
    Show notes

The gang is back together for Episode 102 and the show has a new format. The show was recorded the night of the Emmy’s and the evening of learning about the passing of Kobe Bryant. The crew comes to terms with the loss of an athlete and the role the Grammy’s have in letting us know we are getting older. On the show this week, Michelle sat down the author, Kari Knutson, of the article than ran in the ASHA Leader about crying in your car. Is training social skills dehumanizing? Also, can you predict Dyslexia? We also have our SSPOD Shoutout, the SSPOD Due Process, the ASHA Spotlight, and the SSPOD Hot Take.

The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7.

    ----more----

SSPOD Shoutout: We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, like Kerry David, the owner of Join Hope Speaks. Kerry trains providers and gives therapy to those who need it in areas that may not have the resources.

SSPOD Due Process: Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. This week’s due process comes from Talking With Tech’s host, Rachel Madel. She is upset about the gatekeeping involved in getting AAC devices to our students who need it.

Article #1: Dyslexia in children may be predictable. A study running in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research look at the link of Phonological Awareness and the prediction of Dyslexia in Children. What do the results mean for your therapy setting?

Article #2: Some have called ABA therapy just dog training for humans. What does training social skills really look like? Can it be dehumanizing? How can we change our therapy settings to be more open to all of our patients and students.

Interview: In the ASHA Leader, an article called “Whats EQ Got to Do with It?” Kari Knutson wrote an article looking at stress management. Kari’s first article in the ASHA Leader was edited and Kari found out the hard-way what an editors pen can do when the term “Cry in your car” was left in the article with no perspective or other information given. Kari talks the process of this article and her original intention about stress management techniques.

ASHA Spotlight: Its time to look to your colleagues and get them nominated for the 2020 ASHA Awards. Make sure you are showing ASHA who deserves to be nominated.

Hot Take: Matt takes the first hot take and takes aim at Internet Bullies.

Kristin Martinez and Teletherapy Discussion Part 3, Literacy and Dementia, Cameras in the Therapy Room, Reading Rates and Aphasia, and the Annie Glenn Award Nov 20, 2019
    Show notes

The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7. Matt and Michelle are prepping for ASHA this week! As this goes live, Michelle will be in the air and Matt will be driving through the foothills of Tennessee. Are you making your plans to see the live taping at ASHA? Head over to Xceptionaled.com for more information to see the crew live in Florida. Matt is presenting on the Ethics of Podcasting and Michelle is hosting a live Speech Science Event.

Teletherapy looks to be the future of speech and language pathology. What is the best way to handle the increase and demands? Michelle sat down with Kristin Martinez from PresenceLearning for a 3 part interview diving into the nuts and bolts of Teletherapy. This week on part 3, they talk about discharge and answering all of your questions about teletherapy. Kristin Martinez is the head of Clinical Standards and Outreach at PresenceLearning.

Did you know there may be a link between literacy and dementia. Recent research shows that literate patients or patients that are life long readers may have a less chance at cognitive decline and dementia. How does literacy impact your ability to correctly identify cognitive decline. How comfortable would you be with a camera in your therapy session? Who should or shouldn’t access it? A school district in Dallas wants cameras in every special education classroom.

The reading rate of speakers may be impacting people with Aphasia. A study looked at rates of 120, 150, and 180 words per minute to identify the appropriate speed. Could this impact receptive language students in the classroom? It is ASHA week, what are your plans? Make sure you tag #SSPOD in all of your ASHA podcasts and visit the hosts live on the show floor.

Kristin Martinez and Teletherapy, Structural Changes in the Brain, PDPM and Dysphagia, Switches and Communication, and Stem Cell Grown Larynx Nov 17, 2019
    Show notes

The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7. Matt, Michael, and Michelle jump right into the topics this week as they prep the week before ASHA. Are you making your plans to see the live taping at ASHA? Head over to Xceptionaled.com for more information to see the crew live in Florida.

Teletherapy looks to be the future of speech and language pathology. What is the best way to handle the increase and demands? Michelle sat down with Kristin Martinez from PresenceLearning for a 3 part interview diving into the nuts and bolts of Teletherapy. This week on part 2, they discuss what therapy looks like and general questions about Teletherapy. Kristin Martinez is the head of Clinical Standards and Outreach at PresenceLearning.

Screen based media has risen many concerns in the realm of therapy and parenting. The risks of increased ADHD or language deficits have always been a concern but now a study from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital shows structural differences caused by screen time. PDPM is back in the news, again. If your patient has a modified diet, you will get more funding. What strains does this put on a therapist in a SNF? Could there be more pressure to put someone on a modified diet and they don’t need it?

An SLP taught her dog to communicate using switches. Matt dives into why he doesn’t like the way switches or buttons are used in therapy and the crew discuss better ways to use them with a purpose. Science continues to push bar and some days it feels like science fiction versus science facts. A group of scientists have grown a Larynx using a persons stem cells. Lastly, Speech and Language Pathology is listed as a top paying job where you don’t have to work 40 hours, fact or fiction?
