Connor McDavid’s shocking 2-year, $12.5M extension continues to send shockwaves through the NHL — and The Sheet is here to break it all down. Jeff Marek and Greg Wyshynski dissect what McDavid’s “discount deal” means for Edmonton’s Cup window, Leon Draisaitl’s future, and the 2028 free agent class that could reshape hockey.
They’re also joined by recently retired NHL defenseman Tyson Barrie, who reflects on playing with superstars like McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Nathan MacKinnon, what separates those generational talents, and his new ventures off the ice — including his “Chilly Ones” beer brand and stepping into broadcasting with the Vancouver Canucks. Barrie also weighs in on Connor’s decision, locker-room reactions to team-friendly contracts, and shares stories about leadership, rivalries, and Gabriel Landeskog’s inspiring comeback.
Plus: a deep dive into the Battle of Florida chaos between the Panthers and Lightning, playoff predictions, and how this all ties into opening night across the NHL

Colby Cohen joins Jeff Marek to give his unfiltered reaction to Connor McDavid’s stunning 2-year, $12.5M per season contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. Cohen argues that while the deal is great for McDavid and the Oilers’ Stanley Cup chances, it could have a ripple effect across the NHL — hurting other players in negotiations by giving general managers leverage on future contracts.
The two dive into the tension between taking less for the team versus pushing the market forward for all players, with comparisons to Jack Eichel, Leon Draisaitl, and Kirill Kaprizov. Cohen emphasizes how McDavid’s decision highlights the ongoing debate over the salary cap, luxury tax possibilities, and the shrinking “middle class” of NHL contracts.
From McDavid’s exit strategy to the pressures on restricted and unrestricted free agents, Cohen delivers a contrarian but insightful perspective on what this contract means for both the Oilers and the league as a whole.

The newest episode of The Sheet on the Daily Faceoff YouTube channel, hosted by Jeff Marek, is dominated by one story: Connor McDavid’s new two-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers at $12.5M AAV. Marek breaks down what this contract means for the Oilers’ Cup window, the ripple effects across the NHL, and how it reshapes superstar negotiations moving forward.
To go even deeper, Bob Stauffer — one of the most plugged-in voices around the Oilers — joins the show to give his insider perspective on what this deal says about McDavid’s future, Edmonton’s roster-building strategy, and how this extension impacts the team’s short- and long-term outlook.
And while McDavid’s deal is the headline, we might also get to the other big stories: the fight-filled preseason game between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning that racked up 200+ penalty minutes, Zdeno Chara’s number retirement in Boston with Andrew Raycroft’s reflections, and Gavin McKenna’s NCAA debut with Colby Cohen. But make no mistake — this episode begins and ends with McDavid.
