    You may have heard that Underwood's primitive classic from 1988 entitled "California Sigh" was recently reissued by Drag City Records, but did you know that he played alongside the late and great Tim Buckley? Underwood was responsible for laying down those incredible guitar and piano parts on esteemed albums such as Buckley's self-titled debut, the monumental "Goodbye and Hello", "Starsailor" and countless others throughout their short, but transcendent career together. Underwood eventualy stepped away from music all together to write for prestigious publications as well as publishing books like "Inside Paul Horn" and the accalimed "Blue Monday: Tim Buckley Remembered".


    Season 7 Ep. #2 - Chris Cohen :: Deerhoof / The Curtains Jul 29, 2024

    LA based musician, multi-instrumentalist and producer Chris Cohen has been involved in the forever changing and challenging music scene for nearly three decades now. Having participated in groups such as Deerhoof, The Curtains, Natural Dreamers, Cryptacize, as well as contributions to Cass McCombs and Weyes Blood albums, Coehn released his accalimed debut back in 2012 entitled "Overgrown Path" and has since gained great attention for his incredible process for songwriting and unique abilities to conjure up certain elements that make him the outstanding the musician he is. With much anticipation since the release of his self-titled album in 2019, Cohen has made an epic return with "Paint A Room" and we couldn't be more excited. Enjoy!


    Season 7 Ep. #1 - Lou Barlow :: Dinosaur Jr. / Sebadoh :: Season Premier Jul 05, 2024

    We're very excited to begin yet another season of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast and what better way to kick things off then with our special guest and music hero, the legendary Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, just to name a few. Having met J Mascis back in highschool, the two set out to form their very own hardcore band, Deep Wound, after being inspired and influenced by the growing Punk/HC scene in their area. They would soon connect with Murph and the trio would establish Dinosaur in the mid 80s before renamaing the band to Dinosaur Jr. for the release one fo the most important records of all time, their 1987 classic, "You're Living All Over Me" on SST Records. Barlow soon parted ways with the band to start the incredibly prolific Sebadoh and for the past 3 decades he has created an amazing body of work that has influenced bands and artists all over the world. Whether he's playing in Dinosaur Jr, The Folk Implosions, Sebadoh, working on his own solo material, or the podcast he co-hosts with his wife called Raw Impressions, Barlow is simpy in it for the love of creating something beautiful, something valuable and its exatcly this that makes him one of the most diverse artists out there today.     Season 6 Ep. #20 - William Tyler :: Season Finale Jun 07, 2024

    Sometimes you feel like you've know someone forever... well at least since that one time he came to your small town during his "Impossible Truth" tour back in 2013 and played your local coffee shop. I'm talking about our southern brother, William Tyler. A legend among greats, Tyler played with the likes of Silver Jews and Lambchop prior to launching his solo career around 2010. He has crossed paths with the late Jack Rose, rocked with KY legend Bonnie "Prince" Billy and so many wonderful artists over the years. A Tennessee boy born and raised, Tyler grew up with his sister, whom he started the Stone Fox venue with in Nashville back in the day. Eventually signing with Merge Records, Tyler went on to release a large body of work with titles such as "Goes West", "Music From First Cow" and his Thrill Jockey debut entitled "Lost Futures" with Marisa Anderson back in 2021. Eventually relocating to LA for a few years, he has since been back in the south during the Pandemic crisis to reset and figure out his vision for the next chapter. Tyler is true blue and we couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you. Enjoy!


    Season 6 Ep. #19 - Naomi Yang :: Galaxie 500 May 24, 2024

    Naomi Yang is an artist that has defined her career with incredible pivots into various collborations and projects over the last 4 decades. Having been part of the renowned NYC based trio, Galaxie 500, in the mid to late 80s, Yang takes us on an adventure through her early days of attending highschool with futrue G500 bandmates, college as an architect major, pursuing music, the NYC scene of the 1980s, the emotional rollercoaster of being a band in the public eye, eventually going on to form Damon and Naomi, republishing out-of-print books, starting a music label, her documentary entitled "Never Be A Punching Bag For Nobody" and much more.


    Season 6 Ep. #18 - Martin Courtney :: Real Estate May 11, 2024

    On this episode of the Self Portrait Gospel Podcast we speak to frontman and guitarist Martin Courtney of New Jersey based group Real Estate about growing up outside of NYC, seeing bands for the first time in the city, The Beatles, meeting long time friend and bandmate Alex Beeker, forming Real Estate in the mid 2000's, connecting with the Woodsist folks for the band's debut LP, signing with Domino Records, group's most recent effort entitled "Daniel" and much more.     Born and raised in the countryside of Ohio, Nashville, TN based musician and visual artist Michael Ruth (Rich Ruth) saught creative refuge in a more music driven community with like minded people as his horizons began to expand. Eventually coming into his own as a musician, Ruth connected with locals such as Spencer Cullum Jr. and the folks over at Third Man Records and since been on journey that only just begun. His most recent album entitled "Water Still Flows" is an exploratory narrative driven by poetic textures and atmospheric rythms and in Ruth's own words is his 'greatest effort yet'. Enjoy!

    On this very special episode of the podcast we speak to Buoy about his youth growing up in various locations around the east coast in a milirary family, begining his music journey through wind-instruments before connecting to percussions, his love and early influence of hip-hop, punk and jazz, eventually meeting longtime friend and bandmate Seth Olinsky, forming Akron/Family, meeting the great Michael Gira of Swans/Young God Records and joining him for the Angels of Light, life after A/K, a career as a solo musician, the harsh reality of where music may, or may not be heading and much more.     An absoutle cherished gem in both the music world and the articulated documentation of the creative human process, Chasny is one of the greats of our generation and a sincere force of nature to be cherished for all of time. On this very special episode of the podcast we explore Chasny's youth growing up in Northern California listening to metal music, being first introduced to the guitar and his unique scholar approach to the instrument, becoming interested in more underground music such as Sun City Girls, influences from the east coast and their growing appreciation of his style of music, touring with the late Jack Rose in the early days of Six Organs of Admittance, albums such as "Asleep on the Floodplains", "Hexadic - Triology", "Burning the Threshold" and his most recent effort on Drag City entitled "Time is Glass".
