Sonny Sandoval was born and raised on the streets of Southtown, Texas, two exits from the Mexico border. He was always a behind-the-scenes person with no ambition of being the frontman for the platinum selling band, P.O.D. The band, known for their heavy music, was too Christian for the world but too secular for the Church. Sonny lives on the edge of these two worlds, a line he has attempted to walk with integrity.

In his new autobiography, Son of Southtown, Sonny reflects on over 30 years of being a Christian in a mainstream band, playing on MTV and touring the world.

How does one truly follow God's calling in this chaotic world? Part of the equation, according to Sonny's story, is being totally and uniquely who God made you to be, without apology and without compromise--but with passion and integrity.

What does it mean for a Christian to be "part of God's Kingdom?” How should this knowledge inform a Christian's view of politics, government, and general posture toward other countries? Pastor Brian Zahnd, of Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, Missouri and author of a dozen books, joins the podcast to talk about the radical shift in how the church postures itself as part of God's Kingdom, stating the church should "not be of this world" (John 17:16). With a biblical view of God's Kingdom as the context, Pastor Brian and Joey also discuss the key to unity in the church, how a Christian holds peace in this war-torn world, what the church's role is in light of Jesus' finished work at the cross and how this plays out in Brian’s church.

For the final episode of 2024, it's PART 4 of our four-part Christmas series, where Pastor Jack Hoey III and host Joey Svendsen discuss the ultimate Christmas movie classic, It's a Wonderful Life. We’ll also catch up with Lead Pastors Josh and Lisa Surratt and hold the second annual "Christmas Trivia Championship Showdown."
Listeners will hear a variety of opinions about It's a Wonderful Life—Joey is disappointed by the lack of excitement surrounding what he thinks could be the greatest movie ever. Some of the hosts theorize that the movie may be more interesting to people with specific racial backgrounds, while Jack highlights that the main character, George Bailey was celebrated because of how he lived his life sacrificially for others—relating this idea to how God is also sacrificial.

Also included in this episode is a thought-experiment on having political discussions with family during the holidays, the balance between living sacrificially for others while not neglecting self, the significance of feeling compelled to give a gift to a person he or she received a gift from, and whether it's more difficult to find healthy community in 2024 when technology options have increased.

Christmas On The Podcast (Part 1): Buddy the Elf and Morals Surrounding Feasts and Overeating Dec 03, 2024

It's a 4-part Christmas series and to kick us off, Seacoast’s Lead Pastor Josh Surratt is in the studio to talk about Seacoast’s Christmas At The Movies series. He continues the conversation about ‘belief’ from his own message based on the 2003 Christmas classic, Elf. Josh responds to the flack that Seacoast gets about mixing sermons with movies. He also proposes that despite the uneasiness that spiritual doubts and questions may elicit, the church can't be afraid of them. He then gets personal about how worship is used in his life to battle circumstances and strengthen his faith.
At the top of the episode, Lynne Stroy and Tomelex Copeland admit that they can take or leave the movie, Elf and the host crew is split on their opinions of white chocolate. Then the conversation turns serious as they discuss what glorifying God through our eating looks like and Jack Hoey III shares why the question "what's God doing in your life right now?” isn't a good one.

Is a heart posture of thanksgiving only possible when life is good? How is it that often in the toughest of circumstances, profound love and community rises to the surface, leaving one with deep gratefulness in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

In the context of three stories from the Seacoast family, we look at the gift of thanksgiving. Seacoast Ashville Campus Pastor Teddy Winter shares a story of high expectations squashed by unfortunate events that his family is still processing.
Lead Pastor Josh Surratt opens up about the gifts of thanksgiving he found during a low point when he literally fought for his life in a close call with COVID-19.

Lastly, Ragina Scott is the founder of the North Charleston non-profit Destiny Cafe, a pay what you can cafe that serves healthy and delicious meals. Ragina shares how the city came together to support the cafe and it's mission, when a major hurdle presented potentially stifling impact to operations.

124 - A Friendly Debate About the Doctrine of Predestination Nov 12, 2024

The topics of predestination and free will have been debated for centuries. On this week’s episode, we’ll hear from individuals with varying opinions on these complex topics. Bible scholar, writer, and podcaster, Chris Date believes in the theology of Calvinism (term often used synonymously for predestination) and sees one’s salvation as something that God predetermined and that only individuals whom God chose will live with him for eternity. Chris and Joey Svendsen are joined by Pastor Chip Judd to discuss this belief. Chris and Chip also share sharp opinions on whether a person’s actions or choices are authored by God and if he controls the outcome.

At top of the episode, Tomelex Copeland, Roy Jacques, Lynne Stroy and Joey have their own discussion on predestination and they revisit a conversation from an earlier episode and assess whether it’s possible for a person to remain quiet in a stressful, high pressure situation.

The retired professional basketball player also shares his opinions on why we shouldn’t compare different NBA eras.
At top of episode, hosts, Joey Svendsen, Luke Gaikwad, Lynne Stroy, and Amy Worley discuss how emotions play a large role in the media we watch. They specifically dive into a true story about ten men who plotted to kill Reverend Billy Graham during a revival, but God had other plans. Nine of the men left having received the grace of Jesus. Then, Luke, Lynne, Joey, and Amy turn their attention to the Chosen TV series and reflect on how watching the episodes sparks an emotional response and they discuss how the series has personally impacted each of their lives.

Last year, in episode 67, "Should Christians Watch Horror Movies," a panel discussion comprised of Seacoast family shared why watching horror films poses no personal moral conflicts, many even citing reasons why these movies can be good and informing. But today, Lynne Stroy brings a different Biblical perspective and disagrees with these perspectives.
Also on today’s episode is Jack Hoey, Ciarrah Lindsay, Amy Worley, and Joey Svendsen, who have their own response to this form of entertainment. After substantial pushback to last year’s episode, the five of them turn to the morals of general violence in movies and discuss some unrealistic, over-the-top violence in movies like the John Wick series and whether the violence in historical movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List adds value to the viewing experience.

117 - Gospel Rap is Back w/ 1K PHEW Sep 24, 2024

Atlanta-based hip-hop artist, 1K Phew joins us fresh off of his 30th birthday to share the meaning behind his “gospel rap.” A "self-proclaimed old soul,” wisdom included, 1K Phew grew up in church before chasing a different lifestyle and getting in trouble with the law. Through that experience, he had a spiritual rebirth and began a relationship with God. He has now taken the hip-hop scene by storm and in his own words, "gospel rap is back.”
In addition to his story, 1K Phew talks to Lynne Stroy and Joey Svendsen about the difference between being a "Christian artist" and "an artist who communicates Christian themes.” He also gives the rationale for why he collaborates with hip-hop artists who don't hold to Christian faith.

At the top of the episode, Lynne, Joey, and Luke Gaikwad discuss "the Cheers paradigm." The idea is that today when you look at pictures of TV stars who appeared in shows in the 1970s and 1980s, while in their 30s and 40s, look to us like they are in their 50s and 60s. It's a thing.

114 - Michael Sweet, Frontman of Platinum-Selling Metal Band, Stryper Sep 03, 2024

In a pre-MP3 and CD era, vinyl full-albums abounded in Christian bookstores and at local record stores. It's 1986, and today's guest, Michael Sweet, and his band Stryper ("by His stripes, you are healed.." Isaiah 53:5) just released their album To Hell With the Devil. It's about to sell millions in both Christian and secular markets, with its songs all over the radio, and music videos on MTV. Host, Joey Svendsen was in the 4th grade, but found that Stryper album at Family Christian Bookstore and it turned his life upside-down, resulting in music exploration being a full-blown hobby.
Stryper was no different than the other "metal band greats," like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Poison. From impeccable songwriting to catchy melodies and shredding guitars, Stryper was on top of their game. The things that separated them from the rest was their motivation to spread the gospel of Jesus and their song lyrics that matched that passion.

Joey talks to Michael Sweet about the early days of Stryper, the hair and make-up culture of the 80s metal scene, and why Michael had to walk away to get healthy and prioritize God and family. Throughout the episode, Joey highlights some of his favorite Stryper songs as listeners are treated to audio clips of them all.

[BONUS] "God Help Me With My Faith" (a post-sermon discussion on Sunday's message) Aug 29, 2024

Pastor Adam Martin makes his first appearance on the Seacoast Podcast, it's been long overdue. He delivered a sermon four days ago on Sunday (August 25th), "God Help Me With My Faith." On this bonus episode, he's in studio with Jack Hoey III (Creative Director, Pastor, host of show), Joey Svendsen (host of the show, Pastor) and Geoff Reppard (Pastor of Seacoast Small Groups, also first time on the podcast) to talk faith, doubt, certainty and disbelief. Other questions are discussed: Has western Christianity taken the "personal relationship" component of faith too far and perhaps have not enough emphasis on the beauty and truth of "the Faith" being originally birthed into "the church" (a group of people) and never starting with "one person having his or her own personal faith?"
If painful seasons are "building blocks" of faith, are they also good? Does God give these seasons as gifts? Pastor Adam explains the important distinction between "God causing" and "God ordaining," especially in regards to growth from suffering. Lastly, the four reflect on the importance of experiencing God through the Holy Spirit while also discussing how an overemphasis on "personal feeling" and a zealous drive for experiences can both be counterproductive or even harmful to one's faith.
The guys today can't answer emphatically on a lot of these questions, but they can ponder on it all and certainly give their best guesses; after many years of seeking God, a lot of invested prayer (Adam more than others, very likely. holier, tad older), and a lot of scripture reading. Certainly each having his own experiences with past seasons of doubt and unbelief and now each in a season of peace and belief in the core essentials of the Gospel.

The four talk a bit about Seacoast's financial strategies, whether tithing is "Old Testament theology," the deeper heart change one can experience during seasons of financial hardship, how to "give responsibly," and there's even some sound advice for parents who want to instill in their kids, good financial stewardship.
Nick and Rich bring to the table helpful insight on finances from a wealth of knowledge and from extensive professional experience and personal practice. Most importantly they demonstrate lives of astute personal financial stewardship with "living out the gospel" being the goal (i.e. increasing generosity is the goal).

Seacoast Church was started in 1988 by Pastor Greg and Debbie Surratt who moved from Illinois to Charleston, SC in 1987 with their four kids, Jason, Josh, Jessica, and Jenny. Early on, their family endured life-threatening hardship—two of the kids surviving a massive car wreck and their oldest daughter, Jessica, surviving an extremely close-call in a jet ski accident. On this episode, Pastor Greg, Pastor Josh Surratt, and Jenny Mayer (the youngest of the bunch) sit down with host, Joey Svendsen to discuss those dark times, including the narratives of those dreadful accidents. They reflect on God's goodness shown through church community and ponder these early seasons in the context of spiritual warfare and God's sustenance. Also on the show is a serious discussion on how, despite their deep love, parents can unintentionally hurt their children with their actions and words. The three also talk prayer and forgiveness in light of human freewill.

Lynne Stroy, Katie Walters, and Natasha Gray come straight to the podcast after watching an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Released in 1970, the show depicts Mary Richards, a single woman in her 30s, living in Minneapolis, trying to make a life for herself. The storyline seems archaic now, as society in 2024 is vastly more opportunistic for women. In today’s episode, we’ll ask, “How farhave we progressed from the country's dark history of racism and gender inequality?”
As these three ladies, alongside host Joey Svendsen, reflect on this question, they also discuss the role that ignorance plays in matters of inequality and what grace looks like when offered to those who have more learning to do. What sort of humility and understanding should one tap into when reflecting on past generations or societies in other parts of the world today that err on very important matters. The four also get into theology on women's leadership in the Church and wrap up the conversation talking about the The Chosen Women’s Conference, including a snippet of a woman's story whom, while attending, encountered freedom and forgiveness from a regretful decision she made a decade ago.

With the current explosion of artificial intelligence accessible to the common man, there are many questions yet to be answered. Excitement is in the air for some, but many find the possible implications for the future, unnerving.
Pastor Mal Fletcher, is referred to as a futurist. Through Christian lenses, he sheds light on what many fear, as a result of A.I.—to be an inevitable "job apocalypse." Is this a reasonable concern? Is it possible for A.I. robots to acquire consciousness? Will people be able to connect with entertainment and art manufactured by A.I.? As this new phenomenon becomes more and more advanced, is society headed toward utopia or dystopia? The questions are endless and although many are unanswerable, Mal has a depth of insight that sheds a lot of light on what is to come, for a future with A.I.

In his book, High On God: How Megachurches Won the Heart of America, Jim shares the results of his investigation, and on today’s episode, he gives listeners a snapshot of the positive findings on megachurches. According to Jim, within the couple thousand megachurches in America, the number of scandals are minimal, the community one finds is incredibly beneficial to the human soul, and the good work these large churches do in society is staggering. With host Joey Svendsen, the two also speculate on the correlation between human emotion and "moves" of the Holy Spirit and how emotionally uplifting environments in themselves, are good for the soul.

Grayson grew up at Seacoast Church and has served at multiple Seacoast campuses as a worship leader, but has since pursued his music career full-time. During Joey and Lynne’s time with Grayson, they talk country and southern rock music genres, how the internet has affected the music industry, and the drastically different experience of Grayson’s Saturday night gigs at the bar and then leading worship the next morning. An American Idol contestant in 2019, Grayson shares his story of being on the show, including a significant memory of getting props from Lionel Richie. And, what would a Brandon Lake/Grayson Little tour look like? Grayson pitches the idea of touring with his long-time friend, and Joey, Lynne, and Grayson discuss the topic of compromising the artistry by “making it big.”

Jack Hoey III, Lynne Stroy, Roy Jacques, and Joey Svendsen have a somber conversation about suicide, reflecting on personal losses at the hands of this tragedy, including the passing of Seacoast pastor, Darrin Patrick in May of 2020. The four also ponder theological implications of suicide and discuss the merits of the "selfish act label" that many people give to one who takes his or her life. Joey also fields questions from the other three about his experience with a mental health crisis in 2019, contemplating suicide some during that time. The four also have an imaginative discussion (thanks to Joey) on the suicide of the apostle, Judas Iscariot.

96 - The Struggle of an Eating Disorder Apr 30, 2024

From first grade through college, Seacoast family and staff member, Alexandra Hunt, battled eating disorders. She bravely recounts excessive exercising as a child, binge eating, and forcing herself to throw up in college. Well into adulthood, Alexandra realized that starving herself was not the answer. She is now focused on healing from a lifetime of low self-image and finding freedom in her nutrition and exercise routines.
Although it's not a struggle she considers to be completely in her past, Alexandra shares rich lessons she's acquired over the years including the importance of finding identity as a beloved child of the King and mindfully reshaping her relationship with health, food, and her body. She has learned that when one accepts God's love and takes captive dark thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5), the lies will be exposed and rendered powerless. She teaches all of us to "boast all the more gladly in our weaknesses so that Christ's power may rest upon us” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
At the top of the episode, Joey, Lynne, Roy and Jack discuss "PC culture" and whether phrases like "you need a therapist" or "I'm so OCD" (said by a person without the disorder) are harmful or innocent.

Statistics show that half of all marriages end in divorce, including couples inside and outside the church. God hates divorce, but loves mankind; and makes us new creations. The Bible also says where sin abounds, grace abounds even more. Although theological implications of divorce are touched on a bit, the episode as a whole shares the heart of three people. All are a part of Seacoast Church who love the Lord, want to please their maker, have walked through the pain of divorces, have been restored by God, and have some important insight for the Church.

91 - The 100 Most Asked Questions about God and the Bible Mar 26, 2024

Shea Michael Houdmann is the founder and CEO of Got Questions Ministries. For more than two decades he and his team have been reading, reviewing, and/or answering hundreds of thousands of questions about God, the Bible, and Christianity. He has several degrees in the areas of biblical studies and theology and is currently pursuing a doctorate of ministry at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Gotquestions.org, where most of their work is carried out, is visited by 18 million visitors per month, meaning: a lot of people have questions. After 22 years of fielding questions about topics ranging from salvation, heaven, hell, Jesus and scripture, to suffering, sexuality, and race, Shea decided to compile these questions into a book, The 100 Most Asked Questions about God and the Bible (releasing in April).
Joey Svendsen and Jack Hoey Jr. find out a bit more about the organization, it's beginnings and how the team at "Got Questions" approach this serious undertaking of answering questions, many in which finite man simply cannot know for sure. The three talk belief, doubt, and discuss a few of these top 100 questions.
At the top of the episode, the host team continues some reflection on The Billy Graham Rule and talk the complexities of Jesus.

90 - Debating "The Billy Graham Rule." Mar 19, 2024

In many evangelical circles, the practice of avoiding "alone time" with a member of the opposite sex can be common. The idea is to avoid the temptation to connect emotionally, or physically with another person outside of one’s own marriage. Evangelist, Billy Graham and his team lived by a set of rules to uphold integrity, and this one, nicknamed, “The Billy Graham Rule” is the topic of our discussion.

One of our guests, Pastor Chip Judd, has counseled countless married couples through affairs and divorces. He believes that the intimacy (not necessarily physical) found in one-on-one encounters opens the door to trouble and is not worth the risk.

But, Bea Wray and Charlotte Cox, both part of the Seacoast family, claim to be negatively impacted by this “rule." They argue that it puts males and females on unequal professional ground, with a disparity in males having more opportunities, especially in church ministry, where most pastors are men. They also believe that this rule doesn't get to the root of the issue and could even exasperate the problem it's setting out to solve.

In this week’s episode, you’ll get to know a little about Shama's background, including his origins in Tanzania East Africa, his current dwelling in Greenville, South Carolina, and how he stumbled upon comedy. Joey and Shama discuss the Christian faith, comedy in general, and the various facets of how Shama brings the two together.

Justin Woodbury joins the podcast as a speaker and advocate for survivors of emotional and sexual abuse.

When he was a child, he was taken advantage of a woman at his church. His story is covered in his book, “Sheltered but Not Protected: Learning to Love, Forgive, and Heal After Emotional and Sexual Abuse.” The following is a snapshot of Justin’s journey. It’s a story that almost ended in complete ruin but at the hands of a great savior, has been and is being restored.

Wendi Lou Lee spent many years of her childhood on the set of the television series, Little House on the Prairie. She played "Baby Grace," the fourth daughter in the Ingalls family. On this episode of our podcast, Wendi shares some inside scoops on the TV show, takes us through the journey of life on set, and discusses her life-changing run-in with a brain tumor as an adult. Her memoir, Red Tail Feathers: Dare to Discover the Beauty of Grace, is a more in-depth take on this journey, highlighting how she felt God's presence and grace through it all. She also wrote A Prairie Devotional, daily readings and prayers based on the Little House TV series.
At the top of the episode, Lynne and Roy give Joey some constructive criticism on a recent episode about race, in which Joey had some regrets.
Little House on the Prairie TV series (1974-1983) was based on the Little House best-selling book series, written biographically by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The series shares the struggle of frontier-living in a post-Civil War, 19th century America. Famous actor, Michael Landon, (Bonanza) who played "Pa Ingalls," had a major hand in using the show to address issues, such as adoption, alcoholism, faith, poverty, blindness, racism, child abuse, and even rape. Although predominantly a drama, the program has many lighthearted and comedic moments, as well.

Domestic violence does not always include intoxication and assault. It takes on many different forms; and in churches (just like everywhere else), it’s happening right under our noses. Erin Norton, former victim of domestic abuse, joins the podcast to talk all things domestic violence, including many commonly held misconceptions. She's advocated for victims in varying capacities for 7 years. Given her love for the church and strong belief in the gospel of Jesus, she also has an invested interest in helping Christians see how centuries of misapplying various part of the bible, especially pertaining to marriage, has left many people [mostly women] unnecessarily vulnerable to abuse.
Sitting with hosts Lynne Stroy and Joey Svendsen, the three also manage to fit in some discourse on single-parenting and the infamous "Will Smith slap."

Former punk-rock, self-loathing, self-harmer, now a minister of the gospel and leader at one of the most influential Christian ministries in America; and it all started when a stranger handed her a compact disc, (google it, youngsters) strongly encouraging her to give it a listen. While listening, the ensuing healing and transformation brought to her by the Holy Spirit would drastically change the trajectory of her life and vastly increase the amount of hope in her heart.
Given that Becky is also a former student at Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, we also ponder and process the topic of supernatural healings. Why don't we see more healings? Why does there seem to be more healings in developing countries? Is it a cop-out to end certain prayer requests with "...if it's your will?" In our last two episodes, not only to we want to have fun talking about Christmas and being jolly, we also want to remember those who are suffering or have a family member suffering; and potentially be a resource to help folks navigate this season.
Rejoicing during this season by talking favorite christmas songs, debating when christmas songs should be listened to (and stopped listening to), discussing whether Christmas celebrations are rooted in pagan worship and whether that's even something that should be bothersome if true. Kate J. Meyer is an author, speaker, licensed professional counselor, and ordained minister. She wrote, Faith Doesn't Erase Grief: Embracing the Experience and Finding Hope. In one of the most helpful new Christian grief books, Meyer blends up-to-date grief psychology, biblical accounts, and everyday stories to (1) Offer a way to acknowledge emotions, (2) Introduce three main phases of early grief, middle grief, and lasting grief, helping you understand and navigate each one, (3) Discuss the continued but changed bond many grievers experience when their loved one is gone. (4) Offer "pause for whisperings" space to record what you’re experiencing, and (5) presents step-by-step tools for coping, such as "Psalms writing."

Most Christians believe God is all-loving and all-powerful, but if this is the case, why does evil exist and how does prayer fit into the equation?
Part two continues the conversation with author and theologian, Thomas J. Oord, explaining a specific belief in God termed "Open Theism." Open Theists suppose that not only is God limited in power, but for God to make people with true freewill, the future isn't knowable even to Him. While most Christians lend no credence to this theological framework, it's yet another way in which many Christians have attempted to reconcile human suffering with the existence of "an all-loving God."

In part 1 of this double-header, Roy Jacques, and Joey Svendsen push back on many of Chip Judd's views on prayer. The two are more willing to say "I don't know," concerning the finer points prayer, pointing to mystery; while Chip’s beliefs have more emphasis on a human’s responsibility (and ability granted by God) to dictate what happens through prayer.

On most summers, Seacoast Church does a teaching series called “At the Movies,” in which recent movie releases are dissected a bit, the teaching pastor on that particular Sunday highlighting some helpful applications, mixing in some scripture and showing some of the clips.

Because of copyright issues, any live-feed containing movie clips gets rejected from
Youtube and Facebook, two platforms Seacoast Online uses to broadcast Sunday services. Thus, this last summer, a different route was taken on these two platforms, essentially an aired video podcast with that weekend’s speaker, a conversation about the movie and about their sermon from various angles.
What you hear today are two of those conversations: Pastor Greg talking about The Jesus Revolution and Pastor Josh Surratt on Maverick, i.e. Top Gun part II.

69 - Israel, Hamas, and Loving Enemies (w/ Pastors Naeem Fazal and Greg Surratt) Nov 13, 2023

Former pastor at Seacoast Church and Lead Pastor at Mosaic Church in Charlotte, Naeem Fazal was born in Kuwait and is an Ex-Muslim. He wrote a book with the very title: Ex-Muslim. He joins Pastor Greg Surratt and Joey Svendsen to discuss the war in Israel. The three discuss various sentiments many Christians have toward Israel (for some, these sentiments are sacred) and how these thoughts can potentially be a distraction from the church's primary purpose in this world.
Along the way, the three discuss evil, including what the church's role is, in combatting it. One reads in the bible that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood" (Ephesians 6:12) as well as Jesus' command to "love enemies." But there seems to be times in which violence is unavoidable, given the deeper aim at loving and protecting the oppressed. How does one navigate the tension of hating evil while still loving enemies? (Matthew 5:43-47).

Andi Andrew, with us today, released a book about two years ago titled, "Friendship -- It's Complicated." This book focuses on connections specifically amongst women, and as Andi describes certain "complications" more common in relationships between two females, the general question at hand in this podcast episode is: Just how different (and to what degree) are "guys and girls" from one another?
Andi Andrew, Roy Jacques, Joey Svendsen, and new to the podcast, Amy Worley, have an "all things guys and all things girls" conversation. Although there is 100% buy-in amongst all four in the many inherent differences between the genders, they also acknowledge the many exceptions to the cultural stereotyping of "girls should like pink and ballet, while boys should like the color blue and football." Today's discussion takes a look at how narrow views of society are usually unhelpful and often times counterproductive or harmful.
They also discuss some general themes including how transparency differs from vulnerability and instances when forgiveness for a friend may not include reconciliation. Andi also shares the concept of "spiritual midwives" and why they are important in her life.

65 - A Worship Pastor and a USA Women's World Cup Soccer-Winning Personal Trainer Oct 16, 2023

Tara and Greg Banks have been a part of Seacoast for the vast majority of time the church has existed. Seacoast folks who attend the Mount Pleasant Campus have been led in worship by Tara Banks for 30 years. Earlier in the year, she released a devotional that she wrote, Waiting on Wonders: 40 Days of Wonder. In this episode, Tara discusses the deeper truths and vital practices that God has shown her through decades of seeking Him, all of which influenced the content in her devotional.
While the two are at it, they share a more intimate look at their lives, their marriage and faith. Greg traveled with the US World Cup Soccer Winning Women's team as a personal trainer. Given his background, listeners hear a bit about human anatomy 101. Included also is a "behind the scenes" look at what happens when a professional athlete gets hurt on the field and Clemson fans will enjoy Greg's professional perspective concerning a decision involving the great Deshaun Watson playing through an ACL tear to end Carolina Gamecock's 5-game winning streak in the state's rivalry.
World Cup Soccer Champs + learning healthy spiritual practices = a heck of a conversation. At least we think so.

On the Ground in Israel (w/ our friend, Marc Turnage) Oct 11, 2023

As we all know, the situation in Israel is grave. Marc Turnage has permanent residence in Israel and after a week in Charleston (last week) with Pastor Greg at The Retreat at Church Creek, returned to Israel the night before the terrorist attacks. While Marc is able to join us from a safer space, his wife and extended family are currently in areas where the violence is more prevalent and the danger more imminent.
Marc reflects with Pastor Greg and host Joey Svendsen his current raw emotions and the current state of affairs from his vantage point in Israel. The three discuss the unprecedented nature of these attacks, Marc unpacks the motivation of Hamas, the three ponder how they see this violence in the context of evil and discuss some of the pitfalls many fall into in an effort to minimize the pure evil behind these ruthless acts being carried out on the innocent.

Derek Minor has been in the "rap game" for a long time and over the years has made numerous albums, started a non-profit, produced albums for other artists and established himself as one of the main hosts on the Relevant Podcast (one of the most downloaded Christian podcasts out there).
In recent years, Derek went through a bout of depression and took a journey of soul- searching that compelled him to seek (and find) true contentment and deep happiness. To do this, he had to face his own demons, including "daddy wounds" and hurt caused by the church. Most importantly, he had to look in the mirror with honesty.
A culmination of his journey is captured in his recent album, "Nobody's Perfect." The album, full of grit, honesty, compassion and hope is the reference point of this conversation Derek had with host, Joey Svendsen. After watching the heart-wrenching and unfortunately very disturbing documentary on Hillsong Church, The Secrets of Hillsong, Lead Pastor Josh Surratt joins regular hosts, Pastors Jack Hoey III and Joey Svendsen to reflect on what they saw and learned from the documentary.
The three reflect on the tough question of whether Hillsong’s leaders originally started with admirable aspirations and motivations for a healthy church, that simply went awry. They also ponder any level of responsibility Josh holds to assert continual transparency and openness concerning the environment of Seacoast Church; a church that although behind the scenes is far from perfect, consistently lacks the primary ingredients that led to such a toxic church culture at Hillsong, as the leadership at Seacoast is very motivated with great care to keep each member safe.
Hillsong's downfall and exposure of corruption left many in distress and regret, second-guessing the value of their energy and personal investment over the years at Hillsong Church.

[In Episode 61, part 1 of this two-part series for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month presents two journeys of two children who battled cancer: River Putnam and Elizabeth "Liz" Brooks]
Today the rest of Liz's story is shared through the accounts of her parents who had to temporarily say good-bye to their daughter in 2021. They continue the tribute to a daughter their hearts beat fondly for, as they process out loud, grief, faith and a desperate "holding on to hope," amidst such great pain.
On the day of Liz's homecoming, what Jeremy and Laura Brooks witnessed seemed to be their daughter's few moments in "the in-between," as it appeared that angels were in full force to peacefully take Liz's soul to eternity.
Stories of pain are a part of life. May we listen, learn, and stretch our hearts to have hope and thanksgiving in any and every circumstances.

61 - Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (Part 1): Two Stories, One Tragic Ending, One God Who is Faithful Sep 25, 2023

Two stories of two kids who fought diligently, positively and with great faith, the dreadful foe of cancer. River Putnam was 11 years old when he began his fight against a rare form of brain cancer. Now, 15-years-old, him and his mom Melanie Putnam (“Mel”) join the podcast to share their story as well as the ways in which they are currently walking through some of the remaining havoc.
Elizabeth “Liz” Brooks began her fight against cancer at 12 years old and at 18 slipped away to heaven in 2021. While Liz's story ends bitterly on this side of heaven, her parents and many listeners amidst tears will still agree she is currently experiencing the best possible outcome.
Believers in Jesus have faith that He has overcome the world, and that belief brings hope. But in this world each person will have trouble. Pain and sadness are real and as long as one lives, can't be avoided; and no one is ever in the clear of experiencing their own personal nightmare, even those with great faith.

Two true stories of beauty from the ashes, those hard-pressed on every side but not crushed, enduring great suffering but not abandoned. One story leading Mel Putnam in a perennial state of thanksgiving for the more years she has with her bright son, River, while Jeremy and Laura Brooks (who also join us today) also have their hearts settled in thanksgiving for the time they had with Liz's and the privilege of being her parents. Often times, however, as a result of losing her, they have to hold on to hope with all the strength they have.

Stories of pain are a part of life. May we listen, learn, and stretch our hearts to have hope and thanksgiving in any and every circumstances.

[There are approximately 250 foster children in Charleston County, and hundreds more in the cities surrounding our Seacoast Campuses. Lynne Stroy and Allison Cordle, both licensed foster parents, have opened up their homes to these children, representing two of the other 1200 licensed homes in South Carolina open and ready to do the same for the 4000 kids in the state who are in need of a home.
Deeper context of this need is shared through Allison and Lynne's personal stories as caretakers of these children, including the challenges, what goes on behind the scenes, their perspectives of the parents of these children, and how they see their role serving these children and their parents.

It's been 22 years and there's a whole generation of people now who have only heard about, seen the footage and read the stories. Those who lived through 9/11/01, however, have a keen understanding the world-changing event it was and the heaviness the aftermath brought.
Our two guests, both a part of the Seacoast family, have unique and rare vantage points. At the time of the attacks, Fred Reed was taking a shower in a hotel connected to one of the towers. After orders to flee, he found himself with thousands of others running for their lives, not knowing what exactly they were running from.
Denny Nissley founder and leader of the disaster-relief, non-profit organization, Christ in Action, responded to the crisis within 12 hours of these unprecedented attacks on America.

58 - The Surfside Condo Collapse of 2021: He's Near the Broken Hearted and Rescues Those Crushed in Spirit Sep 04, 2023

Mike Noriega has walked through the fire of tribulation, including the loss of his dear grandmother in the tragic condominium collapse in Surfside, FL (Summer, '21). As God's presence sustained him and his family through great devastation and broken-heartedness amidst such great loss, they were also rescued from being "crushed in spirit" (Psalms 34:18).
Mike shares his personal account of this tragedy and through the sharing of his story and testimony "preaches a sermon" on suffering, the difference between a broken heart and a crushed spirit, and God's redemption on the other side of great loss. Along the way, he shares stories of other families who's loved ones perished in this tragedy.

For a very long time, Seacoast Church has had women as pastors, elders and leaders at all levels of the organization/church body. As normal and natural as this feels to many Christians, others believe this approach to ministry doesn't line up with an accurate reading of scripture.
Pastor Greg, founder of this church, Kathy Roseborough, a leader here, and Andi Andrew (newer to this church family) who has taught women and men at Seacoast on a Sunday morning or two, join Joey to talk woman leadership in the church.
From their individual journeys of processing this issue to theological dissection of verses that appear at first glance to prohibit women from teaching men, the four deliberate this issue while discussing what each believe to be a more helpful and accurate way of approaching scripture and theological disagreements in general.

56 - A Different View of Hell Aug 21, 2023

Most of us were taught in Sunday school that the future destiny awaiting all who reject Jesus is an existence in some form of eternal death. Some believe in the literal flames of hell and others utter darkness, but most all agree given the tortuous state with full consciousness, it’s not a place one wants to find him or herself in.
Our guest Chris Date agrees there is an eternal death. However, he takes the word “death” to mean a literal death. Never conscious again, one is dead forever, this view greatly different from the traditional view of living forever in torment. Chris and many others are fully convinced this "annihilationist view" is backed by an accurate reading of scripture while many Christians label it heresy.

At the top of the episode, Jack talks through some church history. From Constantine to the Roman Empire and the nature of Christian persecution at the time, Jack indulges us in a historical depiction of that time when being a “Christ follower” was a very new concept, the faith just born.

Pastor Greg shares a foundational conviction he's always had for Seacoast that according to him, has allowed for so many people with different denominational backgrounds to fit right in and call Seacoast their church family. Chip Judd gives his take on why the vision at Seacoast and the type of leadership Greg exudes isn’t normal for pastors who lead such large churches.

Both explain why despite their many more years of life and ministry experience than that of Seacoast’s much younger lead pastor, they unequivocally consider Pastor Josh Surratt to be their pastor.

Kathy and Chip, two friends of our lead and founding Pastors working closely with both, join Lynne and Joey to discuss the toxic cultures and pastor downfalls that mega churches are unfortunately being increasingly known for. Both are fairly confident that our two main leaders won't have similar falls.

During the course of this conversation, we have guest segments with Laura Barringer (co-author of A Church Called Tov) as well as with Joey's friend, Hayden, who experienced very poor treatment by church leadership during a very low season of life.
Joey also brings on former staff members he worked alongside to talk about the special working relationships they all shared during time leading a Seacoast church location together. Lastly, Zach Bolen, solo artist and singer/song-writer of the band Citizens, shares perspective on today's subject at hand, based on his experiences at multiple churches. 53 - But the Bible Doesn't Say That Jul 31, 2023

Would you be surprised to find that David wasn’t the underdog, going up against Goliath? Did you know the Pharisees were not enemies of Jesus, and every single Christmas pageant you’ve watched was dead wrong about something we all just assumed was true. Our guest today (Marc Turnage) points to a handful of beliefs most people hold to, that the bible simply does not support.
Marc who considers Seacoast to be his church from afar, leads educational tours of the Holy Land through his organization Biblical Expeditions. He holds an M.A. in Jewish History and New Testament Backgrounds from Jerusalem University College and is currently finishing his PhD in the Land of Israel Studies Department at a University in Israel.

Seacoast Church is a big tent that houses many Christians believing very differently on certain topics; and this is one of them. The founding pastor, Greg Surratt, believes in the gift of tongues, practices it behind closed doors, and while many others on staff do as well, many do not. Some do not believe it's actually a gift that is in effect during this current age of the church.
In today’s conversation with Chip Judd, Jack Hoey III, and Joey Svendsen, a few viewpoints are discussed but mainly the gift itself is dissected. If it's a real spiritual gift, what even is it? Is it God’s intention for everyone to have? Are there times when people speak in tongues audibly but it’s just noises without the Holy Spirit’s involvement? The three discuss these and other aspects of what many refer to as a heavenly language.

51 - The Journey of Michael Gungor Jul 17, 2023

Michael Gungor was brought up in a very traditional expression of the Christian faith. If you've frequented contemporary churches, you've likely sang a song he wrote, "Beautiful Things." Multiple-Grammy Award nominated artist and at the peak of exposure in the Christian music industry about a decade ago, his music career unraveled due to an unraveling of his Christian faith. As Michael started to verbalize his doubts, churches and other christian venues cancelled show and many Christians "washed their hands" of Michael Gungor.
Michael recounts some moments of those tough days, including some backstory of his career, reflections on how Christians handled his faith loss, and how 2023's older and wiser version of Michael would walk out that season if it unfolded today instead. He also shares some weaknesses, things in life he'd like to get better at, and schools us all on what the power of love can look like amidst social media wars and in the cancel culture so prevalent in today's society.
At the top of the episode, Pastor Josh Surratt hangs with Lynne and Joey reflect on some of Michael's story, ponder how Christians treat those who lose their faith, and Lynne saved a puppy, which happened to belong to Joey's wife.

48 - Dear Dana, What if Polarity Was No Match for Love? Jun 26, 2023

When Amy Daughters saw on Facebook that her old pal Dana was living the nightmare of a child (her only son, Parker) battling cancer and undergoing a second stint at St. Jude Hospital, she was suddenly inspired to begin writing the pair weekly letters in the mail. She had no idea how it would change her and Dana's lives forever, forming a deep connection; one founded on deep, unwavering love and prayer. The result was essentially an invincible friendship.
The unique correspondence between these two also inspired Amy to write individually each of her 600 Facebook friends. This story is captured in Amy’s newest book, “Dear Dana: That time I went crazy and wrote all 580 of my Facebook friends a handwritten letter.”

Is love strong enough to sustain relationships even amidst deeply rooted, polarizing convictions and beliefs? If love is indeed the answer, the world needs a lot more of it as people are divided more than ever.

Former mafia man Robert Borelli talks about his life-story captured in his book, "The Witness: A Tale of the Life and Death of a Mafia Madman." Borelli was an “up-and-coming star” within the Mafia ranks. With his life falling apart from drug addiction and a broken heart due to a daughter wanting her absent dad to be present, a spiritual rebirth was initiated when he was behind bars. Released under witness protection, he began his new life as a new creation in his new Savior.
Lynne Stroy and Joey Svendsen ask Robert about this former life full of crime, whether he's currently in any danger due to past relationships with gangsters, and how Jesus saved him from a life heading toward disaster. Joey may have asked him if he's entertained by movies like The Godfather, Goodfellas, etc.
Before this wonderful transformation story, Tomelex Copeland, Campus Pastor of our North Charleston Campus joins Lynne and Joey to talk about diversity in the context of church family at Seacoast and why precious youth in the black community particularly, turn to gangs for community.

Author and speaker, Toby Slough, travels and speaks to parents, many who are trying their best but haven’t the clarity of what’s healthy, harmful, or beneficial for their kids amidst all these rapid changes.
Given the current climate, kids’ brains are literally developing differently than any generation due to the quick accessibility to information and an ability to connect with peers any second of any day, on their phones.

Jeff Leinberger, Campus Pastor of our West Ashley Church Campus, Amy Alderman, long-time elder at Seacoast and Joey Svendsen discuss their personal journeys working through anxiety. From panic attacks and embarrassing "anxiety stories" to how each process the infamous "don't be anxious about anything" verse in Philippians 4, the three discuss how they have coped with anxiety, the effects of it on their day-to-day, and what they believe to be the cause.
At the top of the episode, Lynne Stroy shares with Pastors Roy Jacques and Joey Svendsen a dark season in her life that included the loss of her brother and a boyfriend struggling with mental illness.
Sandwiched between these two conversations, Chip Judd, pastor and licensed therapist, gives helpful considerations when trying to find a good therapist.

Pastors Julie Hiott, Chip Judd, Jack Hoey III and Joey Svendsen discuss theology surrounding miracles and healing. Are some prayers more effective than others? Do some people "pray better?" Are there ways to increase the chances of receiving a miracle? Does it make a difference if a hundred people are praying for something, rather than just a handful? Brittany Lake [her husband being Grammy-Award Winning artist, Brandon Lake] gives a snapshot of her upbringing, including how and when she found hope in Jesus. Along the way, she discusses the challenges and rewards of motherhood and shares some reflections on having the extra income in the Lake household greatly due to the success of her husband's music career. Her and Brandon now have been able to start a unique outreach to serve weary souls and Brittany is still getting used to shopping at Whole Foods without having to worry about money.
She shares her greatest life challenge which also happens to be the biggest hurdle worked through in her and Brandon's marriage. These challenges were set off when she was sexually victimized as a freshman in college.
What brings her joy, sadness, anger and what's her greatest fear, Brittany also processes her desire to see the church have less "fluff" and shares the one person who has had the most influence on her life.

32 - Should Christians Become “Better Christians” Over Time? Mar 06, 2023

The church is the “righteousness of God,” (2 Corinthians 5:21) but not as a result of anything one has done (or refrains from doing). Last time we checked, people of all types are still making messes everywhere with everything. The only scenario in which one can truly live the right way is when the Spirit is working through and in a person’s heart. But shouldn’t one still try hard as well? It's common knowledge that deep change can't be made in passivity. But if it’s a work of the Holy Spirit, what does "putting forth effort" even look like, and what's the risks of getting all this wrong? Joey, Lynne and Teddy discuss while reflecting on their own life-journeys of faith.

But at the top of the episode, Darrel Wallace, who tunes into Seacoast services as a volunteer every Sunday through Church Online, stops by to share his life story. Despite a fair share of pain in his life, including emotional neglect from his parents, the loss of his wife to cancer, and a stint of being homeless, this Seacoaster is full of smiles and is about as thankful and optimistic as they come.

31 - Theological Deep Dive: Truth, Belief and the Problem of Evil Feb 27, 2023

So many unanswerable questions on this side of heaven and so many perspectives, even on the nature of what truth is. In an age where everything is questioned, why do so many still believe fervently in a good, loving God? And what about those who say, “I’d love to believe in this God, but I can’t make myself believe in something." Would unbelievers all believe, if they could see the fullness of God?
And on the subject of God, is He all-loving, all-powerful, both, neither? Some Christians ascribe to "open theology," respectfully rejecting the notion of God's unlimited power. Regardless of what beliefs one holds, this world, the evil done on it, and the pain felt in it, is deeply troubling.
We discuss these “not so light-hearted,” nor simple spiritual matters that have had the brightest of thinkers scratching their heads for centuries.
Part one of this episode is with our very own Jack Hoey. Joey and Jack process thoughts on truth, belief, unbelief, and whether unbelief is a choice. For part two, Bruce B. Miller (author, pastor and consultant) discusses the problem of pain, suffering and evil, using his most recent book, The 7 Big Questions in Searching for God, Truth, and Purpose, as context.

Our very own Katie Walters and her business/ministry partner in Togo, (and now, family) Pastor Francis, join Joey to discuss God’s hand in their coming together to answer the call of Katie’s compelling vision for ministry in Togo.
Together, they have employed 13 Togolese seamstresses through their 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Francis + Benedict. The partnership made with these women provides dignified and sustainable employment and the profits are used to resource other community leaders in Togo, helping to sustain their loving service to orphans, widows, and those suffering in poverty.

Oh, and the skirts made and sold to supporters all over the world are also very fashionable and classy attire that’s a hit with all sorts of women with all sorts of styles.

29 - [Part 5, V-Day Shorts]: When Your Valentine Goes on Secret Missions as a Pilot Feb 13, 2023

Fairly new to the Seacoast family, Josh and Jessica Reagan have their trust in God, especially in regards to their inability (thus far) to conceive a child. As these two age into their late 30s, many of their peers now with kids have unfortunate misconceptions on how these two process life and what their desires are, as a family with no kids.
Practical advice from these two, including refraining from asking couples "When are y'all gonna start growing a family and have some kids." Families exist in all forms, many of which don't include kids.
As part of the role he plays within his "military family," Josh often flies jets on secret missions that he can't tell Jessica about; while she simply wishes there were no more missions left, for him to leave her for.
Does absence really make hearts grow fonder for these two and what do they miss the most when they are apart? What's their favorite wars movies and how do they currently feel about their difficulties of getting pregnant?

Many are familiar with the admonition and promise found in Psalms 37:4: "delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart's desire." Having always desired to be married with children and now into her 40s, Lynne Stroy is trying to make sense out of this passage. She readily admits to the difficulty of trusting, because currently, she's still single and doesn't understand why.
Lynne explores not only the spiritual implications of her singleness, but also describes practical and deeply personal facets of her journey. Listeners will hear how often she thinks about her singleness, why eHarmony quickly lost its appeal, and the unintentional, insensitive (and sometimes hurtful) questions/suggestions people have proposed to her in regards to her singleness.

Pastor Vern had some painful trials later in life, Migsie shares the circumstances around his arrest by the FBI, charged with faulty accusations.

If God "works good out of all things for those who are called according to His purpose," (Romans 8:28) and one has a painful and life-altering experience, did God cause it to happen in order to bring out that good? Can we assume all of it was a part of the original plan?
What's God got to do with our day-to-day? Pastors Roy Jacques and Julie Hiott discuss with Joey Svendsen their take on this mystery. We also hear two stories from the Seacoast family, one in which a young girl's (now grown woman, Kristen Overcash) dreams of being an Olympic gymnast is shattered by an obscure back condition and a successful businessman (Jack Hoey) loses his business during the economic turmoil of 2008. Did God orchestrate these losses for a greater purpose? Were the life-changing events included in God's perfect will for these two? Questions we can only ponder. And that's what we do here in this episode.

Musician and song-writer, John Mark McMillanand Propaganda, (hip-hop/spoken word artist and author) join the show to talk about their upbringings, cultural makeups, different life experiences and their current world views, as a result. They both share some compelling thoughts on racism and inequality, through the lenses of Christian faith.
John Mark McMillan wrote a song "No Country," and Propaganda laid down some poetry on it. One close look at how Jesus interacted with people, it's clear how to let love lead the way. This is something our culture struggles greatly with and unfortunately, it's seeped into the church. The two, along with Joey, discuss this struggle in the context of faith and race, John Mark and Prop also share their heart in these issues that birthed the lyrics to this song collaboration.
Does everyone struggle with a level of racism? Are some races at an advantage over others, still in 2023? What does it mean to be an American when one is first and foremost a citizen in God's kingdom?

20 - Being a Pastor When You Love Everyone on Both Sides of Every Issue Jan 05, 2023

Naeem Fazel joins our lead pastor, Josh Surratt and Joey Svendsen to talk about being a Pastor when polarity seems to be at an all-time high in our country. Naeem, long-time pastor at Seacoast Church and former mentor to a "young Josh Surratt," moved to Charlotte in 2005 to plant Mosaic church and in 2014, wrote a book called, "Ex-Muslim."
Josh Surratt and Naeem Fazel, both lead pastors of churches, love all people and yearn for hope to be found and received by all. Along with Joey, the three talk about "church hurt," whether they find it important to refrain from having public connections with perennially, harm-causing Pastors, and the deeper issues at the root of the rampant division in the "capital C" church.
Naeem also shares instances of racism he's endured as a Pakistani American Pastor, many of these times, connected to folks' uneasiness of his ethnic background in the wake of the 9/11/01 attacks on America.

17 - This Holiday Season, Mourn With Those Who Mourn Dec 12, 2022

It's the "most wonderful time of the year" for many of us. For others, it's a brutal reminder of a loved one's absence in the "most difficult time of the year."
Today's guest, Kathy Yokeley, wrote Not My Plans: When God Allows a Parent’s Worst Fear to Come True. When she gave birth to her daughter Natalie, the perfect family she’d dreamed of was complete—a loving husband, beautiful little boy and girl, even the family dog. That future was bright.
At the age of 12 Natalie was diagnosed with inoperable spinal cord cancer and Kathy’s picture-perfect world came crashing down. Nine nightmare months later, her precious daughter was gone.
Christmas was Natalie's favorite time of year, and every time the Holidays come back around, Kathy is painfully reminded of Nov 24th. 2008, when her daughter passed away. On this episode, listeners will hear about this extraordinary little girl and learn about grief from a mom who has walked in the shoes of every parents' worst nightmare.
Kathy Yokeley gives some guidance for those with loved ones and/or friends who are suffering this year, sharing what people said and did during times of deep grief, that were (and are) helpful to her. She also reflects on God's goodness and faithfulness in the most painful of trials, giving practical and spiritual insight for those grieving.

16 - The Rescue of Our Daughter Part 2: The Aftermath Dec 05, 2022

Continuing where we left off from Episode 12, “The Rescue of Our Daughter Part 1.”

As the impactful reality of what took place settled into their lives, the extensive recovery process for the Todd family started initially in the hospital and continues on to this day.

Just shy of 5 years since that dreadful night, Brittney catches us up to speed on her and the Todd family's current progress in adapting to the new life they never asked for. From her urgent facial reconstructive surgeries to ongoing mental health therapy for the whole family, she also reflects on her spiritual resolve during the toilsome aftermath and how God’s presence was experienced through the loving embrace of community, fashioned only in a way that God could orchestrate.

Brittney gives a “good report” on her mental health, she shares her current processing of the attacker, and explains why she sometimes minimizes the pain he caused her and how anger and bitterness hasn’t played a significant role in her journey.

15 - A Pastor's Confession: Having an Addiction to Food (w/ Pastor Roy Jacques) Nov 28, 2022

Seacoast Summerville Campus Pastor Roy Jacques opens up about personal struggles with his weight. In High School, he was a State Champion Baseball player for the James Island Trojans. As an adult, he has struggled with his physical health. His main foe? A food addiction.

With two of his close friends, pastors Jeff Leinberger and Joey Svendsen, the three discuss whether Roy is "living in sin," given his lack of self-care. Roy lets us in on his up-and-down journey of finding healthier life habits and losing weight, then giving way to complacency. He talks about the impact his weight has on his confidence, his lack of success with accountability, and whether he considers this struggle "his Thorn" (2 Corinthians 12:17). In turn, Jeff shares his lifestyle of being physically in great shape, but for all the wrong reasons.

At the top of the episode, founding Pastor Greg Surratt shares his thoughts on various topics, including his wish for palmetto bugs and Carolinians to "live together peacefully." Lastly, Seacoast's HR Director Jenna Young stops by to discuss her delicate role of needing to know the good, bad, and ugly of the staff who are a part of the church she deeply loves.

14 - Can You Really Be Thankful in All Circumstances…even COVID? Nov 21, 2022

Is a heart posture of thanksgiving only possible when life is good? How is it that often in the toughest of circumstances, profound love and community rises to the surface, leaving one with deep gratefulness in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

In the context of three stories from the Seacoast family, we look at the gift of thanksgiving. Seacoast Ashville Campus Pastor Teddy Winter shares a story of high expectations squashed by unfortunate events that his family is still processing.
Lead Pastor Josh Surratt opens up about the gifts of thanksgiving he found during a low point when he literally fought for his life in a close call with COVID-19.

Lastly, Ragina Scott is the founder of the North Charleston non-profit Destiny Cafe, a pay what you can cafe that serves healthy and delicious meals. Ragina shares how the city came together to support the cafe and it's mission, when a major hurdle presented potentially stifling impact to operations.

13 - "The Devil Made Me Do It" (a frank discussion on spiritual warfare) Nov 14, 2022

The existence of spiritual warfare is an accepted reality for most Christians. "We battle not against flesh and blood," Paul says to the church in Ephesus. Is it safe to say that many Christians don't take this warfare serious enough? Equally, many Christians appear to be a bit too focussed on the "evil team," while not lending enough credence to other "foes" we have our hands full with (i.e. our personal health, our wrongdoings that harmfully affect us, and sins against us by others, just to name a few).
Julie Hiott, Jack Hoey III, Joey Svendsen and Chip Judd share candidly their thoughts on this matter, many of which is speculation because we simply can not know everything about this realm.
As a Christian, is it okay to “opt out” of the warfare and leave this fight to God and angels? Are certain people in the church called to be more cognizant of the spiritual realm while others are not? Are inanimate objects effective in battling evil spirits? Jude 1:6 seems to point to some demons being in prison. Why doesn’t God just lock them all up?
We ponder these and many more questions about these principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places.

12 - The Rescue of Our Daughter Nov 07, 2022

February 13th, 2018 started just like any other day for the Todd family who at the time were part of the Seacoast community in John's Island SC. Mother of 5, Brittany Todd, with her husband Kevin deployed out of state (U.S. Coast Guard), had just dropped her two oldest kids off at school, arriving home with plans of making breakfast for two of her younger kids while the baby was still comfortably nestled in her carseat from the ride home.
Seconds later, the Todd family would enter into a nightmare that would forever change the course of their lives when an intruder brutally attacked Brittany before fleeing to Alabama with one of Brittany's precious gifts: their 4-year old daughter, Heidi. The attack and kidnapping would sweep national news networks; and despite slim odds, this nightmare would have a happy ending.
Hear the grim details of this story and the seemingly miraculous events that led to Heidi's homecoming. Brittany shares her current processing of these traumatic events, where she's currently at in the recovery process, and how she feels about the perpetrator. This conversation will be continued in an upcoming episode as there is much more to tell in this story of perseverance that the Todd family continue demonstrating to this day.

11 - "What Would Jesus Do" on Halloween? Oct 31, 2022

Many Christians grew up going to "Hallelujah Nights" and "Harvest Fest" celebrations on October 31st; but dressing up, going "trick or treating" and celebrating Halloween? That's for #TeamSatan's biggest party of the year, where Christians have no business being.
But what about Christians who merely enjoy a night of dressing up, getting candy and having a little fun? Is Halloween's questionable roots significant enough to merit a Christian boycott? Jack Hoey rejects this notion and sees Halloween as an innocent night of fun for the kids.
Cheryl Brown, fellow "Seacoaster," has vastly differing convictions. Refraining from Halloween celebrations, according to her, falls in line with God's desire for Christians to be "set apart."

On top of the world, Brian Welch was being listened to by millions of heavy music listeners which meant millions of dollars in the bank. Fast-pace living, always on tour, but always high on meth.
As a new dad, Brian wanted off his cycle and walked away from a $25 million record contract; but to get off the drugs, he would need a miracle.

Joey and Brian talk a lot about “the rock star life,” both of their struggles with mental illness, contentment, and some theology in light of miracles and prayer. Lastly, Brian’s cousin Scott Box wrote a book called “Heroic Disgrace,” a true story and reflections from a worship leader who struggles with bipolar disorder.

8 - After 25 Years of Marital Unfaithfulness, This Couple is Now Happily Married Oct 10, 2022

It's hardly ever simple. People who cheat on their spouses are usually good, decent and normal folks who have greatly lost their way.
Most people who have an extra-marital affair say later "I never thought this would happen to me." And hardly no one can anticipates the painful journey of working through this depth of betrayal. Fred and Terry Reed, both part of the Seacoast Family, walked this road after Fred was unfaithful for 25 years.
In the course of telling their story, Fred shares how he justified his multiple affairs for so long, he describes the relational power shift once he was caught and tells why complete devastation was the only path that could have led to his healing. He also marvels at the grace he received from God and Terry.
Terry explains how she coped with an unhappy marriage for so long and shares whether she accepts any blame in the affair. She describes how "trusting God" was the only way she could hang on long enough to see if "blue skies" with Fred was ever possible again.
They are now happily married and now use their experiences to help other struggling couples. Both found much of their healing through the love, support and guidance from their church family.

7 - Love Your Enemy, Even If He Murders Your Wife to Start a Race War Oct 03, 2022

On June 17th, 2015, nine African Americans were gunned down during a bible study the shooter had been welcomed into with open arms. One of the victims, Myra Thompson, was the wife of today's guest, Reverend Anthony Thompson.
Through the telling of his story of those dreadful days, more clarity is given on how that tragedy unfolded behind closed doors and why. We also believe listeners will hear a story of miraculous forgiveness in a man’s heart. This miracle potentially was the catalyst of sparing Charleston SC from similar rioting that recently occurred in other parts of the country for other racially charged injustices.
We believe in this time of great polarization, the message of forgiveness is an important one. Along with his miraculous story of forgiving the man who murdered his wife, Rev Anthony is also helping to spearhead “events for unity” like "One New Humanity Charleston," on November 20.

6 - Why a Pastor Falls Sep 26, 2022

Many pastors operate from a philosophy along these lines: "the people I lead cannot know of my mistakes. Because they are modeling after my example, they have to see me living right, so they will do the same." And the results? Time and time again, those people are shocked when it's discovered that their pastor, behind the scenes, has been on a path towards destruction.
On the other hand, many church folks still seem to enjoy having "their guy" they can look up to and be proud of, blissfully assuming their pastor to be walking the "straight and narrow." In turn, many pastors make the mistake of trying to live up to that assumption, and in order to do this long-term, it often requires secrets in the dark. Eventually that darkness is too much for any one to bear.
On this episode, Pastors Greg Surratt, Sharon Miller and Chip Judd discuss with Joey Svendsen, issues in the church that generally lead to these downfalls.

5 - Lecrae: God, Therapy, and Restoration Sep 19, 2022

Grammy-Award winning hip-hop artist and New York Times best-selling author Lecrae talks about his book I Am Restored: How I Lost My Religion But Found My Faith. Lecrae’s life was headed towards disaster. More time on the road, less time with family, calendar loaded, substance abuse used as a remedy. In his gut-honest memoire, Lecrae shares the practices he uses in in his daily life for mental, emotional, and spiritual health. His is a story of restoration.

Many fans (as well as close personal friends of Lecrae's) made it clear that Lecrae should refrain from speaking his heart on racism after his 2014 record release, Anomaly, when he shares his views. Some of these friends have never spoken to him again.
Healing from the hurt, committing to extensive talks with a therapist, forming better life habits, and embracing a loving Savior in Jesus has landed Lecrae at a much better place. On top of sharing his story of restoration, Lecrae discusses with the host team, the beauty of the church, the ugly side as well; and how his mental health was restored.

4 - Seacoast Church's Political Statement (w/ Pastor Josh Surratt) Sep 12, 2022

Although political involvement has always been valued and many politicians from both "sides" of the aisle have found a church home at Seacoast, politics has never come close to being the basis for unity. Christ's love for the church and His desire to see love amongst us and for our neighbors, is what we set out to unite on. 2 - Is it Ok for Christians to Be Rich? Aug 29, 2022

On this episode, we welcome former Seacoast Chief of Operations Jack Hoey Jr and author and activist Shane Claiborne as they discuss the morals surrounding wealth. While both men practice a life of generosity that would exceed most people, they read and process very differently the many passages in the bible pertaining to money.
At top of episode, co-hosts Jack Hoey III (son of Jack Hoey Jr) and Jacqui Dailey reflect on their upbringing surrounding money and Jack proposes that Americans, inside and outside of the church, are remarkably generous.
Shane Claiborne is a prominent speaker, activist, and best-selling author; worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living "as if Jesus meant the things he said." Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty and help stop gun violence.
