Kimberley grew up in Vancouver and launched her gourmet food business, Kimberley’s Kitchen, in 2010. She moved to Vancouver Island a few years ago, with the goal of evolving her food business and farming. Now on their small farm, Kimberley and her family farm vegetables and fruit, specializing in garlic, tomatoes, squash and apples. They are vendors at the farmers' market and also operate their seasonal farm store. They host farm events, school groups, and on-farm cooking workshops where Kimberley shares her decades of professional cooking and baking experience to inspire her community to eat local and in-season food.

Kimberley now hosts A Year on the Farm podcast where she shares her small farm experience and hosts interviews with experts in the field of small-scale farming. With weekly episodes, Kimberley interviews women, BIPOC farmers, and LGBTQ2S+ folk to offer a platform for their knowledge and provide a small-scale farming resource for those often under-represented and who face challenges in the agriculture industry.

City girl turned Rural Woman Vanessa Wrubleski spent years and plenty of dollars trying to find the perfect garden planner that worked for her. She was fed up with spending money on garden planners that either didn’t cover all the bases or contained too much unnecessary “fluff”. So she decided to make her own.

    Show Sponsor:

Regardless of your experience level, planning out your garden is incredibly important. You do not need to be living rurally to grow your own food; you don't even need a yard! You just need to be Rural At Heart.

In addition to major planning space, The Rural at Heart Planner is a workbook that contains a number of exercises and oodles of tips to get you started on the right foot. What it doesn't contain is all the extra fluff of typical garden planners/workbooks.

    This workbook contains:

    -Exercises

-LOADS of planning and logbook space

    -Undated monthly calendars

-Information on science based companion planting

    -AND SO MUCH MORE

As Vanessa likes to say "Anyone, anywhere can grow food. You just have to be Rural At Heart."

Starting a Homestead Where You’re At with Natalie Green Feb 25, 2022
    Show notes

On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you will meet Natalie Green, a passionate homesteader with a one-acre farm in Richmond, VA. When Natalie and her husband moved to their home 3 years ago Natalie knew she wanted a big garden and a few chickens for eggs. She was also excited to produce her own food in hopes that it would help some issues she faces due to an autoimmune disorder.

Natalie started her social media account to promote the eggs that she was selling from her front porch. She had been furloughed due to the pandemic and was just looking for a way to keep the feed bins full.

It’s important to Natalie that people see someone that looks like her learning, making mistakes, and using the space she has to grow literally and figuratively as a black female homesteader.

Waste Not Wool with Leanna Maksymiuk Jan 14, 2022
    Show notes

Leanna Maksymiuk along with her family own Lone Sequoia Ranch just outside of Lumby BC. As a first generation rancher, she wasn’t even sure she wanted sheep but accidentally fell in love with her daughters 4H ewe and that was it!

Her flock of Navajo-Churro sheep make up the majority of the sheep she cares for, and growing sought after wool is a top priority.

After selling out of her own wool clip and learning that so many local farmers were composting their wool instead of processing it, Leanna decided to seek out this compost and garbage destined wool and started Waste Not Wool. She purchases and takes in “unwanted” fleece, processes it and sells it as roving and yarn. It is an important part of her journey into wool to share the value that all wool has with her followers and customers.

Leanna and her husband Mark are also raising their two daughters, one which happens to have Down syndrome and Autism.
