Episode 19: Time Management As A Homemaker, Wife & Mama Jan 30, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode we're chatting about all things time management as a wife and mom and homemaker.

You can download the blank time blocking sheet at www.holyhotmessmom.com/timeblock

Basically, you're going to take this blank sundy-saturday spreadsheet with the hours of 6am to 10pm marked down. You're going to start with your essentials. For us I always put in meal times, nap times, wake times, and the normal mass time we usually go to.

Next put in your weekly expectations that have a legit standard time. For us that is our homeschool co op from 830am-1230pm on Thursdays. It takes us about 30 minutes to get to the co op before and after so I add in that travel time as well.

Next i'll add in the things that should be done each day but that could flex if I needed them to. Monday, Tues, Wed, and Friday is homeschooling LJ while the other kids nap in the afternoon. But also, Crossfit at noon monday, tues, wed, friday and 10am on saturday. I also put in 30 min travel time before and after so I'm aware.

That is what my week looks like right now. This I like to color code and print out. I use a happy planner so I can print it out on cardstock and use the happy planner hole punches to put it right in the front of my planner. When I'm scheduling doctors visits, etc I can glance at my white space on the planner and know when would be the most ideal time to schedule something. This is also wonderful for when you're looking to schedule a play date, or add a new activity to your schedule or, if you need to say "no" to something. SAYING NO IS OK!!

I've added this time blocking guide to my blog so you can download it, or open it in google documents, save as a copy so you can modify it and create your own weekly time block. You can head over to holyhotmessmom.com/timeblock to get the time blocking sheet and workbook.

When you create this visual you can see the days of the week that you are super busy and you need to make sure you've got either a fast meal or a crock pot meal for that day. You can see when the laundry needs to be fit in, or maybe even days that are too crazy and you need to back some things off of the schedule.

It's a great tool to have and one that you can even plan to reevaluate every month or so. right now, I've got babies who have ever changing nap schedules so we're updating our time block pretty frequently. I have a time block sheet that actually has the schedules for all of us - me, the two oldest kids, the twins, and my husband. It helps me know when I can realistically prep dinner during each day, the days that maybe need to be prepped ahead of time, things like that.

Episode 17: How to Pray When Your Faith is Iffy Jan 25, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode we're chatting about how sometimes it's hard to feel like God is there. And if He is there, maybe he's not there for US. We've all been in that spiritual drought right?

Faith when we're younger and talking to God is just "please do this and please do that" really doesn't cut it when you're a grown up. You need a relationship - after all, that's the whole point of salvation. A relationship with God. But how can you have a relationship if you don't even know how to communicate??

Prayer is so much more than reciting familiar prayers from mass, it's TWO way communication and it's something that has to be practiced all the time. Just like you'll loose touch with a friend if you don't put effort into checking in, the same goes for God!

I dive into some simple, easy, heart opening prayer steps taken from St. Ignatius of Loyola's method of spirituality.

If you're thinking your prayer life needs a reboot (and I mean, who's doesn't??) then head over to www.holyhotmessmom.com/fillyourcup to get my free 10 day faith filling challenge and workbook.

    Episode 16: Declutter 101 Jan 23, 2019
    Show notes

On my blog/ministry I help moms (really just women in general) declutter in a non-overwhelming, sanity-taking-back way.

After seeing a few posts in a Catholic Mama’s FB Group about needing to clear clutter. I thought, what better time than now to post my general *tips*, tricks, rules and guidelines to get your decluttering butt in gear.

    1) Make sure you know what you're going to do with the stuff you discard. Where exactly are you donating to? Make sure trash and donation items go OUT of the house immediately after your purge. The longer they sit in bags or boxes in the house, the longer time you give it to creep back into your clean home.

    2) Go into each room with 4 bins/buckets/boxes/bags - one for recycling, one for trash, and one for donations and one for stuff that doesn't belong in that room but needs to stay in your house just in its proper place. For the women who have a room full of stuff I suggest taking it ALL out to the driveway to sort - that way you’re only bringing back in your house the things that are essential!

    3) Fight the urge to clean the room you are in during your declutter time. You are here to declutter, not deep clean. I repeat, YOU ARE HERE TO DECLUTTER NOT TO CLEAN. Once your whole house is decluttered, you'll have so much time to clean all the things because you won't be spending your precious time putting away all the things.

    4) Only work on one room/space at a time. And don't leave that room until it's done. It is so easy to go from room to room putting clutter away that when the day is over, you've 1/2 done all the rooms and the whole house looks a mess. This is why that laundry basket helps! I suggest that any items that aren't being trashed, donated, or recycled and need to be put back in their proper homes go into a little bag or basket by the door of the room you are currently in. Once you're finished with decluttering that room, go put all the misplaced things back to their homes. Spend your entire set aside time decluttering that one room, not getting distracted by tons of other things needing to be put away.

    5) Have FUN.. Put on some music and JAM girl. Everyone will know you're occupied and its great for the soul! Plus, getting rid of clutter is so freaking therapeutic I can't even explain it how awesome the feeling is. Do this on a weekend or day where you can do this alone, with minimal interruption.

⭐️⭐️ Now, once you're into the actual room you are going to declutter with your 4 containers ⭐️⭐️

Define what this room IS and IS NOT.

I want to define some things that I don't consider part of different rooms for the sake of this post (which is also an upcoming Podcast Episode!).

🛀🏻Bathrooms are for hygiene, baths, potty, and cleaning the bathroom - Not a storage area for anything but that

🛌Bedroom is for sleeping and snuggly time, we like to code word this mommy daddy time as "butter" haha. Maybe TMI, sorry to this mom, inlaws or sister if y’all see this 😂😂😳. And for prayer 🙏🏻. It's not a room we watch tv in, or fold laundry in, for example.

OF COURSE things will float into these rooms but this process of defining the purpose of each room is so that you establish your ground zero for each room, the state it should be back in pretty much every night before bed.

Secondly, you’re going to define what this room IS:

🚽The bathroom is made for showering/bathing, doing your business, and hygiene in the morning and evening. The only things that should be in this room are things you use in this room and only in this room.

The 🛋 living room for us) is for TV 📺 and some baby toys. Big kid toys float in there but they get put away every night.

Now you get to set some space boundaries - choose a space for certain items. Once that space is filled with those items you know you have too much and need to purge again.

Examples --Bookcases 📚- where all books belong, if they don't fit on the book case, you need to purge. --Pantry - if food is not fitting in the pantry, or fridge, it's time to go through it. —Kid's Toys - Define specific spaces, shelves, containers for each set of toys. An example we have is Barbies. We have a 11x11 plastic target container. Once barbies start overflowing out of that then we know it’s time to get rid of some. I go into more about purging kids toys and getting them involved in the upcoming podcast episode!

Now, you've done all the defining so you're actually going to start the great mama purge of 2019!

When you pull something out first ask — Is this trash? Expired? If so, toss it in the trash bag (or recycle) — Is this necessary? Do we need this item or could something we already own do the job? If so, donate. — Is this a duplicate? You don’t need 6 different wide flat hair brushes. Why do we have 6? I don’t know. Toss all but the ones you absolutely need. (Or donate if it’s not something like a hair brush).

Now some psychology about how the LESS will help create less clean up time... not having excess for stuff used regularly.

Example towels or clothes OR dishes.

    - Having more than 1-2 towels per person means you'll grab a clean towel before you wash your towel. which will just lead to TONS of towels needing to be washed and you putting it off. Which leads to BAM one huge day of laundry where you feel like a slave to the towels!

    - Having more than 1-2 dishes per person in the family will contribute to the same issues. Which is easier in the short term? Washing the dish in the sink or grabbing a clean one out of the cabient? Clearly, grabbing the clean one. Estimate a day of those habits - for my family of 6 that would mean by dinner time I will have 18 plates, cups, silverware, plus all the stuff I used to prepare the meals. When we went down to 1 plate per person - it made me clean up completely after each meal. Done and ready to go for the next. It's been a lifesaver.

---Note, we are not shiny fancy people. When we have guests over I just paper plate it up. No shame in my mom game. It allows me to enjoy the company and the meal and not worry about all the lingering mess!

This kinda"one of everything" mindset really helps during meal prep too - if you don't have 1800 mixing bowls to keep grabbing, you just quickly wash a mixing bowl before the next stuff you're putting in it. The dishes can't pile up in the sink and cleanup is super fast when you're actually all done cooking or baking.

Another question you need to ask before you're done with an item is --- Does this item, or group of items live here?

If yes, put it where it should be in this room ASAP. If they DO belong in your house but just not in the current room you are in, you’re going to put that in your “I'm going to put all this stuff away once I'm done with this room" basket.

You've really got to think about each item logically - ask yourself, “if I were looking for this, what is the FIRST place I would look?”

THAT’s probably where that item should live. If that is NOT in the room you're currently in, put it in the laundry basket for being put away later.

When putting things back and doing your initial big purge do your best to keep flat surfaces clear. By flat surfaces I mean kitchen counters, bath counters, edges of bath tub, toilet tanks, tops of cabinets, stove tops, mantels, etc. Not only does it look so.. stinking' pretty 🙌🏻🙌🏻 but it is easier to wipe clean on a regular basis because you don't have to move anything out of the way.

The biggest bonus I've found is that with flat, clear surfaces - when they do gather some sort of clutter that doesn't belong there because that area should be clear, it really looks out of place. Mentally it will bug you until its put away! Won't take long before you are keeping all those flat surfaces consistently clear. Its heaven, ya'll - believe me!

When you're done with your purge. Get the stuff out of your house IMMEDIATELY. If you don’t it WILL wander back in your house. Trash goes to the outside can, same with recycle, donations go to the trunk of the car immediately and then you put your “lives in my house but not in this room” basket items away.

Fight the other overwhelming urge, to sell your stuff. Its time consuming, never makes much money AND you can get more from the tax deduction for straight donations to 503(c) charities! My rule is that if it's probably not going to legit get me over $100 then it's not worth the time to sell it somewhere. Craigslist is sketchy, I've gotten stood up way too much on FB marketplace AND holding onto everything for a yardsale that really won't make much money is a pain in the behind (not to mention you’ve got to then hold on to all of your clutter!)

Find an accountability buddy, post on social media before and after pictures, be proud of your decluttering! Because you're taking back your sanity!

Episode 14: All About the Eucharist Jan 18, 2019
    Show notes

If you grew up in the faith but never really understood most of it – this episode is for you. If you went to mass because thats what your family did, got first Holy Communion because your mom put you in Sunday school (CF/CCD) classes, and even got confirmed to “graduate” from those CF/CCD classes (like me!!) then this episode is definitely for you!

In this episode I’m going to be diving into some basic info on the Eucharist – the Catholic form of communion. What we believe, why we believe it, what makes it so special, and some other questions that come along with all of the above!

WHAT CATHOLIC’S BELIEVE ABOUT THE EUCHARIST

Catholics believe that bread and wine is actually transformed into the physical body and blood of Jesus. His body, blood, soul and divinity.

No, we’re not killing Jesus all over again. That was a one-and-done deal. It was all foreshadowed in the Old Testament with the Passover.

WHY WE BELIEVE THE EUCHARIST IS THE TRUE PRESENCE OF CHRIST

Well, because the Old Testament foreshadowed it and Jesus himself told us it was!

    See Exodus 12

Now, back to Jesus.Understanding Catholic Eucharist and Communion

See also Yeshua and the Passover Instructions

Even more evidence is in Luke chapter 24 – when no one recognized Jesus fully after his resurrection until they broke bread that he had blessed and ATE it.

OK, SO HOW DO WE KNOW ALL OF THIS IS FOR REAL?

Because Jesus told us himself! Check out John chapter 6! All of it, soak it in and love on it!

Now He meant this both literally and figuratively. Figuratively because He is the filler for all of our voids and shortcomings but literally… well, he explains the whole eating him part next.

In John chapter 6 is where Jesus tells us literally what he means by being the bread of life.

Sounds pretty darn clear to me what He was saying and what he meant with his words!

SO, THIS IS WHAT MAKES CATHOLIC EUCHARIST AND COMMUNION SO SPECIAL!

This is why people go to adoration.

This is why women cover their heads with veils or other head coverings in the presence of Christ.

This is why we kneel during the consecration times of the mass (when the priest is calling on Jesus to transform that measly bread and wine into JESUS!).

This is why we genuflect (literal meaning: bend at the knee) when we enter the sanctuary and when we pass by the tabernacle.

This is why we say “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” Matthew 8:8

This is also why people who have not yet received their First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church should not receive the Eucharist. The episode has the 3 reasons why people who haven’t had their first holy communion yet shouldn’t receive.

And finally this is why it is extremely important for those of us receiving the sacrament to be free of all mortal sins. The big ones – because the big ones separate us from the grace of God by us putting up a wall, ourselves between us and God.

STILL DON’T BELIEVE ME? CHECK OUT SOME EUCHARISTIC MIRACLES!

Eucharistic miracles are when the body and blood of Christ in the eucharist, which is under the form of bread and wine actually bleeds, has actually been scientifically proven to have human flesh cells. And not just any human flesh cells – cardiac (heart) cells. And those cells have been proven to have been under extreme levels of stress found in hormone remnants in the cells.

Thursday, I decided it would be a great idea to check out the new (to me) YMCA. Crossfit, childcare, barre, a pool? Yasss. Well after our tour this one threw tantrums because we weren’t going swimming right 👏🏻that👏🏻minute. “If you’re good today we’ll go tomorrow”. Pool has a mini splash pad.. indoor. It’s awesome. Fast forward to yesterday. I run into Lowe’s (again 😭😭) and grab random crap we need. Mom sat with the kids in the van while I ran in. Afterwards we went to the YMCA to swim. I’m stoked to put the babies in childwatch, give my mom some alone time and take the bigs swimming. Of course I packed swim suits for everyone BUT me when we left NY, so I borrowed my mom's.
Childcare at the Y is from 8-8pm except fridays... freaking Friday’s it ends at 3. What time did I get there?? 3:05... naturally. Audible, mom will sit at side of pool and watch the babies while I swim with the bigs. I have everyone go potty, change, head into the pool. We’re having a GOOD time. My back is feeling great, we were the only ones there. It was awesome. We bounced around between the family lap area, family area, and shallow kids/splash pad. At one point I’m in the family open pool area and E is in the splash pad. She starts doing this weird walk/dance/shimmy/chacha looking thing.
She looked like she had seen freaking big foot - terror across her little face. Me: “Oh.. oh no!! Mom!! I think she’s pooping!!!!”, y’all she’s been potty trained for 8 months... As I run/scramble (aka run in place because I’m in 3 ft of water 😭🤪) to get to her I see a HUGE wad in her swim suit. She’s got her legs super wide and she’s now side shimmying/waddling like a crab and hysterically, ridiculously loudly (in an echoing public pool room) and embarrassingly crying. Me: “ahhh she pooped!!!" I scoop her up and sprint to the family restroom. I attempt to slowly peel off her pool water/poop soaked swimsuit. I get 1 leg out with minimal mess. (yesss winnnn!) and as I am trying to get her to pull her other leg out she wiggles and the whole squish wad of yuck flops onto that STUPID CARPET THEY HAVE IN THE BATHROOM?!! (Continued on blog, link in bio)
