We live in a society that presents equality as a virtue – indeed many espouse equality as the primary virtue before which all others must bow. Conversion to the Catholic Church has always been mysterious, in the best sense of that word. The ninth chapter of Acts of the Apostles describes the conversion of the Apostle Paul. He persecuted Christians until his he saw the risen Christ on the Road to Damascus. Since that time, many converts to Catholicism are those who start out hating the Church. For generations, Americans who considered themselves modern rejected the idea that Satan exists. The leftist press is making much of the fact that newly-inaugurated President Joseph Biden is a "devout Catholic." Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first citizen of the United States to be canonized as a saint. In her short life (41 years), she overcame losses that would have crushed many people. Her wealthy family suffered financial reverses. Her husband died of tuberculosis. Her conversion to Catholicism cost her many friends. Later she would suffer through the deaths of two of her five children. Through all of her losses, she never took her eyes off of her Lord and Savior. She exulted in the fact that He chose her to teach His children in the school she set up in Emmetsburg, Maryland. Truly, she is a model for all Christians, but especially women and teachers. The most important event of the Twentieth Century occurred in the small town of Fatima, Portugal. There, the Mother of God appeared repeatedly to three children. She told those simple shepherd children many things about the future, revelations that were confirmed by later events. She showed Hell to the children so that they could warn the world. She gave their children a simple plan by which humanity could escape the wrath to come.
