Episode 99 Tyler Boeddeker USN RS Jul 21, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Tyler Boeddeker, US Navy Rescue Swimmer. Tyler tells an incredible story and is one that we don’t hear about often because it doesn’t happen very often. He was able to do exactly what he was trained for. As he and his crew were flying in patterns at the ready, the call came over the radio. An aircraft coming back to the ship had an emergency. Tyler and his crew watched as the incoming aircraft was having trouble. The two pilots in the plane punched out and parachuted to the water. Needless to say, Tyler and his crew were on scene within thirty seconds of impact to the water. Enjoy!

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Dr. Chris Hewitt, Prehospital and Emergency Medicine Physician. Chris gives us a different perspective as the Medical Director from his background. He tells us of a story where he ran some of his junior medics through a tough scenario which turned into a real life save scenario six months later. With his type of training scenarios, he looks for his medics to “make a decision that's heading toward right.” We then get into a story about when he was working in Houston TX and he helped on scene with a terrible car crash. Our next story from Chris was while he was on a fixed wing flight on a C130. A hard landing literally cracked the tail of the C130, Chris never skipped a beat with his patient care. We finish our conversation talking about training scenarios and collaboration with a multitude of moving parts. Enjoy!

Episode 96 John Blown from North Shore Rescue and Talon Helicopters in Vancouver Canada Jul 03, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by John Blown from Vancouver Canada. John is a hoist operator for Talon Helicopters and the Air Operations Coordinator with North Shore Rescue. With his 20 years of doing volunteer Search and Rescue and the teams running hundreds of calls every year, he definity remembers a few rescues that he has done. His very first rescue was climbing a mountain in the middle of the night. He and his team were following another team of climbers up to the victim’s location. With headlamps on, while building the ropes system and rocks whizzing by them, they made it and were able to get the victims off of the mountain. Another of John's rescues was a missing snowboarder that he and his team found and were awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He tells us about his first rescue as a hoist operator for a woman who had been lost overnight. Some of the stories we talk about do not always have a happy ending. Being in the area that he is in, they deal with a lot of body recovery incidents. From a cold waterfall recovery, to a plane crash that he responded to, and a lost hiker that made a call saying, “I’m lost” just before she fell off the trail, they have quite the array of calls. We finish on a positive note where he and his team recovered a snowboarder who was caught in an avalanche. Enjoy!

Episode 95 Kurt De Boeck and Filip Windles Search and Rescue Divers from the Belgian Air Force Jun 27, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Kurt De Boeck and Filip Windles, Search and Rescue Divers from the Belgian Air Force. As we start talking about their first rescues, Filip begins by detailing his case which involved performing CPR. For Kurt’s first rescue, Filip was with him as his instructor. Kurt recalls Filip looking at him and saying, “You’ve got it”. Filip tells a few more stories that stand out to him. One of his stories had me in awe. He dove into a capsized vessel and found victims still alive in an air bubble in one of the rooms. Another story he shared was a wooden fishing vessel in distress in Force 9 (50MPH) winds. Filip was on deck and the hoist cable was wrapped into the rigging of the boat and damaged the cable. This forced Filip to then take a rescue boat with the survivors back to shore. Later when they found that very same vessel washed up on shore in Holland, they realized that it was more than just a regular fishing boat. Kurt has a great story about being sent out to rescue a boat with stranded refugees. As they flew out to assist, he and his crew discovered a few people stranded on a buoy. They then found a large group of people who were in a small boat until they saw the helicopter arriving and started jumping into the water. Having stories from two different rescuemen had me enjoying this episode from beginning to end. Enjoy!

    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Thomas Cooney, USCG RS 28. Before we get into some of his crazy rescues, we go way back in time and Thomas talks about how the Coast Guard always naturally integrated into his life. As we talk about the different moments in time, Thomas gives us a bit of a history lesson. We take a walk down memory lane and he recalls his first memorable call out in San Francisco with a plane crash. He talks about a rescue where he saved three lives, earning him an Air Medal. This story led us into another rescue story that just so happened to occur the night before the award ceremony. We finish off with a couple stories that are the types of missions that you are grateful to walk away from when you work in this field. We end with a thank you message to the Coast Guard Aviation Association. Enjoy!

Episode 93 David Weber National Park Ranger Jun 08, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by David Weber - National Park Ranger, Paramedic, and Climbing Ranger. David splits his time between Teton National Park, WY and Denali National Park, AK. One of the first rescues he talks about was one of the first stories he remembers as a rescueman. The patient was injured in a location that was a far way up the river and trail. After an eight hour hike out, the patient was carried out on a litter. Then we get into a few stories that Dave remembers from climbing in Denali, one of which was a climbing incident where two guys had taken a long fall. He went out on another call for carbon monoxide poisoning and the non-standard response made for a very memorable rescue. Then we got into a wild story where a team of climbers had a fall. One of the victims had an open tib-fib fracture from the fall. As the hours passed, the team split up and made the rescue even harder. We also talk a little bit about good advice that we have been given over the years. A couple that we discuss are, knowing the difference between “YOU SUCK and THAT SUCKED” and “What's the plan and who's in charge?” Enjoy!

On 01JUN1982, the Finnish Border Guard created their Rescue Swimmer Program. Without any formal training, instruction, or even knowing what they needed, Juha Raatikainen (JP) became Finnish Border Guard Rescue Swimmer #01. JP tells us of some of the growing pains they went through when the program began. He talks about the trial and errors with equipment, procedures, and the interesting collateral jobs that they were asked to do. He tells us of one of his first big rescues that had a tanker on fire. Next, Sami Ollila joins us again to explain what the Finnish Border Guard Rescue Swimmers do for recruitment, training, gear and more. Enjoy!
