In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Doctor Ikenna Worgu from Nigeria. Ikenna has a very unique story about his profession. As an optometrist doctor, his goal has been to give people their sight back. He has been able to practice in five different countries helping those in need. One of the stories that stands out to him was when he was doing an exam on an elderly lady and she went into cardiac arrest in front of him. He immediately began CPR to bring her back to life. The patient was so grateful Ikenna helped save her life that she insisted that he perform the surgery to also repair her eyesight as well. With a successful surgery to repair her eyes to full sight, she lived the rest of her life happy. Another patient that he remembers well, was a young boy who took a hit to the face playing soccer. The blunt force hit was so hard to the head it caused a tear to his cornea. We divert a bit with a discussion of struggles he has faced in the five different countries with culture. Enjoy!

Episode 125 Christine Cole USCG Health Services Technician and Flight Corpsman Feb 01, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Christine Cole, prior USCG Health Services Technician (HS). As a civilian paramedic, Christine was looking for more out of the job. She decided to join the USCG. While she was in the USCG, her goal was to be a flight corpsman. Christine went above and beyond her regular duties and responsibilities to complete a flight physical, get “duck” qualified, and start working on a flight corpsman syllabus at Air Station Atlantic City, NJ. After her hard work, she was relocated to where she truly wanted to be, Kodiak, AK. This is where she went to the next level. She spent time working in the clinic performing normal responsibilities and in addition standing lots of back to back on call duty. During her time in Kodiak, she flew on many Medivacs and SAR cases, sometimes on the HH60, sometimes on the HC130, and sometimes on both. Christine talks about a few rescues that stand out to her while she was there. During her first case, she flew to a very remote village to assist a man who was in an ATV accident. Her second case, which made it onto CNN news, was of a man attacked by five bears. We discuss a rescue of six patients stranded 820 nautical miles from Kodiak that earned her a Letter of Commendation. She earned a Commendation Medal for a rescue in extreme weather, 1000 miles west of Kodiak. Plus we get to commend her for a rare recognition that she earned, The Perchard Award, chosen by the ward room H60 pilots. Enjoy!

Episode 124 Roger Chivers USCG RS 171 Jan 25, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by one of my AST “A” School instructors, Roger Chivers USCG RS 171. Roger and I recap his incredible career. After bootcamp, he went to a small boat station where he had his very first SAR call out. From there, we hear about his aviation career, which includes talking about his Distinguished Flying Cross that he earned while stationed in Sitka, Alaska. This rescue was of three people, in a raft, in 25-foot waves, with 50 knot winds and 35 degree water. This was Rogers' biggest rescue while in the USCG. He tells us one more heartfelt rescue that he remembers about a vessel taking on water. When they arrived onscene, the vessel had driven up into a tight cove. This made it so if the helicopter flew in, they were not going to be able to turn around. Roger spoke up with an idea about directing the helicopter backwards into the cove to complete the rescue. Enjoy!

Episode 123 Matt Dargan and Brian Conn from Sac Metro Fire CA Jan 18, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Matt Dargan and Brian Conn from Sac Metro Fire Department, Sacramento, CA. These two guys give us two rescue stories that they were on together. The first story had an interesting twist with how it began, a wake up to the dog and a quick look on Facebook. Next thing they know, they are launching to help with a critically injured victim deep in the woods. The second story is a call out for a swift water rescue. California has been hit by a lot of rain and the flood waters are causing havoc on the community. Matt and Brian were called for a family needing assistance for a grandfather who was swept away from the swift water and was clinging to a tree. As the crew made their assessment, they maneuvered in for the rescue. Enjoy!

Episode 122 Bret Fogle USCG RS 503 Jan 11, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Bret Fogel, USCG RS 503. Before the USCG, Bret was trying to decide what he really wanted to do with his life. While visiting a friend who was in the CG, he saw a Coast Guard pamphlet sitting on the coffee table. When he saw the picture of the guy jumping from the helicopter, he knew what he wanted to do. In our conversation, we talk about his first day of duty as a swimmer and being called out on three different rescue missions in one night. Next, we talk about one of his favorite rescues of a downed F16 pilot off of the North Carolina and Virginia coasts. Then we talk about the rescues he had during Hurricane Katrina that earned him an Air Medal. This leads us to another favorite rescue from when he was returning back to his unit post-Katrina and he and his crew came across an overturned vessel with four people in the water. We have a great time reminiscing about the USCG Rescue Swimmer Reunion, “DECERT” in Asheville, NC. Even though he is no longer in the CG, Bret continues to live the life of a swimmer through other avenues. He talks about what he and fellow Rescue Swimmer 711, Steve Gonzalez are doing now as they help prepare people who are considering becoming a Rescue Swimmer. Listen to Bret talk about Ready Swimmer, a program designed to coach individuals at a personal level as they set out to reach their swimmer goals. Enjoy!

    Show notes

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Andrew Jarolimek, pilot for the USCG, now flying as a civilian. Andrew takes us through a few of his very memorable rescues throughout his USCG career. One of the first rescues that he remembers was a 180 feet hoist medevac to a large ship with limited hoisting areas. Next, we get into three of the awards earned while he was in the Coast Guard. The first award was a Letter of Commendation for two British sea kayakers stranded in sea ice too thick to proceed, but too thin to support the kayakers. The next award was an Achievement Medal that he earned after completing six critical rescue missions while on deployment in Cold Bay, AK. The third award we hear about was a Commendation Medal for a paraglider that had crashed into trees 300 feet above the rocky shoreline which required a 130 foot hoist. Enjoy!

Wayne, who is also a co-host to Dust Off Medic podcast, came on here to tell us a few of his crazy rescue stories. We discuss six rescue calls that stand out to him. His first rescue as a SAR Corpsman involved three victims who were onboard a boiler ship that had an explosion. The next rescue that we hear about earned Wayne an Air Medal for a victim who slid 800 feet down a mountain and suffered a skull fracture, intracranial bleeding, an occluded artery, arm broken in four places, and extensive facial trauma. Wayne earned a Navy and Marine Corps Medal for traversing through swift water and flowing ice, uneven terrain, icy rocks and fallen trees to reach a critically injured survivor. Next, he earned the Naval Helicopter Association (NHA) award for a stranded and critically injured climber who had fallen down a cliff. Earning a second Navy and Marine Corps Medal, Wayne had a successful rescue of a back-country skier caught in multiple avalanches. Finally, we hear about a story that earned him another Air Medal. In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Jose Pastor, Rescue Swimmer from Spain. Jose started his life in search and rescue as a lifeguard. He continued with a different route in search and rescue when an opportunity came up to work on ski patrol. He moved into helicopter rescue, working on a Bell 412 in the mountains. One of the first rescues of that unit was an injured hunter that they needed to recover. At his next unit, another rescue that stands out to him was an injured sailor that took over 45 minutes on scene to extract. The next opportunity that Jose had was joining the fire department, a job that he had for 13 years. As a fireman, he recalls a story where he helped with a mass incident in the Mediterranean Sea with over 10,000 people in the water. Today, he is back in the helicopter rescue working in the Netherlands. He recaps a day where he and his crew completed 6.7 hours of flight time after doing four missions back to back to back to back.
