    Exhaust #202: What The Off-Season Oct 20, 2022
    Show notes

While the Motocross of Nations could be considered the end of the traditional racing season, the actual calendar hasn't stopped producing races, with two rounds of the new FIM World Supercross Championship sandwiching Red Bull Straight Rhythm over the course of three straight weekends. Also, the announcement of the new SuperMotocross World Championship got crammed into the recent news cycle as well! Jason Weigandt watched, announced, and attended a few of these events, so he rounds up what he saw in this edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast.

The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Leatt.

    Exhaust #201: Team USA's Inside Organizer (w/ Christina Denney) Sep 30, 2022
    Show notes

The struggle at RedBud in 2018 for Team USA laid the flaws bare for all to see: winning the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations now takes more than just three fast riders. Other nations, such as France, have stepped up the organization of their program, and the Americans would have to do better. There were signs of that for 2019 in Assen, but hopes there were washed away, almost literally. Team USA didn't compete in 2020 and 2021. This year the team promised a renewed effort, and it delivered, both with improved team unity and spirit but also in the darned result. The team won!

Christina Denney, whom you might remember as the team manager of Rock River Yamaha for many years, has taken on a key role within the team, and along with many others has transformed Team USA's operations.

Says Roger De Coster himself: "On our team, everyone worked very hard, but I think the hardest-working person besides our riders was Christina. I want to thank her for the crazy amount of work she put in."

What did Denney do? What other key roles are there within the team? How does it help? Here's the inside story on Team USA's new structure.

    Exhaust #200: MXoN Preview Sep 20, 2022
    Show notes

The FIM Monster Energy Motocross of Nations returns to RedBud this weekend, after a 2018 event best known for the subpar day for Team USA. The American squad didn't even finish on the podium in a single moto four years ago. Can this year's team do better? Jason Weigandt and Kellen Brauer have studied the MXGP scene and all the top teams heading into this year's event. This one-hour pod has everything you need to know ahead of this weekend's race.

Exhaust #199: FIM WSX Year One (with Adam Bailey) Sep 16, 2022
    Show notes

Following the 2021 season, Feld Motorsports did not renew its sanctioning agreement with the FIM in Monster Energy Supercross. For 2022, the Monster Energy Supercross Championship would go back to exclusive sanctioning through the AMA, and the FIM announced it would look for new partners to keep an FIM World Supercross Championship going. The new partners came in the form of a group called SX Global, which included AUS-X Open principals Adam Bailey and Ryan Sanderson, as well as Tony Cochran, a key figure in the growth of Australia's V8 Supercar auto racing series. Plus, they announced the capital investment of an Abu Dhabi–based company. The group is calling the 2022 events a "pilot season," and it appears it will consist of just two races, one in Wales and one in Australia. Jason Weigandt chatted with Adam Bailey on Thursday morning to hear about the challenges and process of getting the first season going, and what the group hopes to accomplish in the future.

Note: Ken Roczen will be participating in the two FIM World Supercross Championship races, but his announcement that he is now a free agent and will not be back with Honda HRC in the U.S. in 2023 came after this interview with Bailey took place.

Racer X Read Out: "A Chip Off the Old Block" Sep 09, 2022
    Show notes

"Step by step, little by little, you have to just become your own person. That's just part of growing up." Davey Coombs reads his feature "A Chip Off the Old Block" from the November issue of Racer X magazine.

The Racer X MXGP Review Show Season Finale: Grand Prix of Turkey Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

It's the 18th and last Racer X MXGP Review Podcast of 2022 as Adam Wheeler and Lewis Phillips talk about the season-closing Grand Prix of Turkey, the dramatic MX2 world championship decider, the final flurry of results and news, as well as connotations for the forthcoming MXoN at RedBud. The Racer X MXGP Review Show is presented by Just 1 Racing.

Exhaust #198: Stew, Reed, Eli, Jett, Hunter & More Sep 06, 2022
    Show notes

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season finale brought out arguably the best one-hour guest list in the history of the sport. The Friday night Staging Area show featured James Stewart as a guest host alongside Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas, and then Eli Tomac showed he felt no pressure for the final race by stopping by for a chat. James was impressed Eli even came over! Then Scouting Moto Combine winner Noah Viney came by with his coach for the day, Chad Reed, which meant Chad and James were on the show together! As if that's not enough, Hunter and Jett Lawrence came by to close the show. Stew and the Lawrences catch the fever!

Oh, and then there was the matter of the actual race, which was won by Tomac, who claimed his fourth 450 MX title in dramatic winner-take-all fashion. Weigandt drops in a post-race interview with Eli here to get the once-again champion's take on the day.

The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

Exhaust #197: Last Showdown (w/ Jeff Emig) Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

Jason Weigandt calls Jeff Emig in this podcast to get the emotion behind final-round showdowns. Fro came out on top the last time the AMA National Championship in the premier class was this close at the finale. In 1996, Emig held a two-point lead on Jeremy McGrath coming into the final round of the AMA National Motocross Championship, meaning a 1-1 score for either rider would decide the title. It has taken over 25 years to get this scenario again, as Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton are now separated by just one point, so winning both motos guarantees the title.

In '96, Emig came through with the 1-1 at Steel City to win the title. Jason Weigandt called Emig this week to hear the story of living the most important week of your life—and you'll get even more pumped up when you hear Emig riff on the focus, the emotion, and the determination needed to win in this environment. In fact, Emig says this type of pressure is the thing he misses most about racing. Weigandt also drops in press conference quotes from Sexton and Tomac, to detect if they're thinking the same way Emig did back then.

The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

    Show notes

MXGP dipped into the French hard-pack at St Jean D'Angely for the seventeenth and penultimate round of the 2022 season, and the MX2 title chase is really hotting up with a 2-point difference between the protagonists with only the Grand Prix of Turkey to go. Here is the latest dose of news and perspective from the world championship with plenty of discussion (and some gossip to boot) from journalists Adam Wheeler and Lewis Phillips. The Racer X MXGP Review Show is presented by Just 1 Racing.
