Bahrain GP: Piastri takes victory - but is he also now title favourite? Apr 14, 2025
    Show notes

Edd Straw is joined by Jon Noble and Mark Hughes to review the Bahrain Grand Prix. After Oscar Piastri's triumph, they ask whether the in-form Australian is now the title favourite, despite McLaren team-mate Lando Norris still holding a slight edge in the standings.

Also discussed is George Russell's remarkable drive to second for Mercedes, which included the Briton having to deal with a litany of issues in the cockpit. There's also a detailed explanation as to why Lewis Hamilton is struggling for performance for Ferrari, and why Red Bull's weekend unravelled so badly on a day when champion Max Verstappen admitted everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

And the episode is rounded out, as ever, with a host of questions from The Race Members' Club, with Edd, Jon and Mark answering teasers on strategy, the safety car, Yuki Tsunoda and more.

And Colossally That’s History: Enzo Ferrari - The uncompromising path to F1 immortality (part 2) Apr 10, 2025
    Show notes

Matt Bishop and Richard Williams return with part two of their two-part mini series on the life and legacy of one of motorsport’s most important and enduring individuals: Enzo Ferrari.

They finished the last episode at the point that Ferrari won its very first world championship Formula 1 race - the British Grand Prix in 1951. In this episode they’ll guide you through the Fifties, Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, during which time the idiosyncratic Enzo dealt with triumph and tragedy in almost equal measure, as he and his team cemented their legendary status in the sport.

Richard and Matt discuss Enzo's uncomfortable relationship with success, the way his son Dino's death shaped his identity and world view, the 'dark glamour' attached to the Ferrari brand in the Fifties, and how Enzo kept going, even when drivers perished in his machinery.

There's also chat about his unique approach to motivating his workforce through 'creative tension', the myths and mystery that surrounded him throughout his life, his surprising weakness for innovation, and how he repeatedly drove his team on to success, despite setbacks including staff walkouts, in-fighting and mediocre machinery.

Plus, find out who the only driver in Ferrari history was to call Enzo by his first name!

    • Matt and Richard will be bringing members an exclusive Q&A episode at the end of Season 3, where they'll answer questions on each of the topics covered. So if you'd like to ask a question about Enzo Ferrari, head to Patreon.com/therace

    What’s behind F1’s Bahrain V10 engine summit? Apr 09, 2025
    Show notes

The Bahrain Grand Prix weekend is set to be significant both on and off track, with a meeting of F1’s stakeholders about ideas for a possible change of engine formula - perhaps even to V10 engines - taking place on Friday.

Jonathan Noble joins Edd Straw to explain exactly what the meeting is about, and how far F1 really is from making such a dramatic change, and what options might be on the table for discussion.

We also tackle what it will take to make a change, and why it would be unrealistic to expect the ‘26 rule changes to be rolled back on at this stage.

McLaren’s chances of finally winning the Bahrain Grand Prix, which is effectively a second home race given the longstanding stake of Mumtalakat, are discussed, along with the prospects for Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.

And in part three of the podcast, we also tackle listener questions on Cadillac, dirty air, Aston Martin’s 2027 line up and more.

Japanese GP: Why Verstappen's virtuosity was too much for McLaren Apr 06, 2025
    Show notes

Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm to unpick the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

They discuss whether Max Verstappen's astonishing virtuosity was always going to deny McLaren victory, or whether the papaya team dropped the ball on strategy in its fight against the Dutchman.

They also discuss impressive showings from rookies Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli, unpack Lewis Hamilton's intriguing post-race comments, and assess Yuki Tsunoda's Red Bull debut.

And of course, it wouldn't be a post-race episode without Edd and the boys answering questions from The Race Members' Club.

And Colossally That’s History: Enzo Ferrari - From middling driver to winning constructor (part 1) Apr 02, 2025
    Show notes

Ferrari is the most famous and celebrated marque in motorsport, and one of the most recognisable brands in the world - but how much do you really know about its founder, Enzo Ferrari?

If your answer to that question is 'very little' then help is at hand, because Season 3 of And Colossally That's History! is kicking off with a double header of Enzo episodes!

On this first episode, Matt Bishop and Enzo Ferrari biographer Richard Williams go back to the very beginning, to explore the events and experiences that helped shape the mindset and attitude of a man who'd build a racing empire.

They explain the mystique around his birth, the moment that a young Enzo developed a love of racing, and how his mother helped get him into the motor trade (Enzo having barely survived World War 1).

There's also detailed analysis of Enzo's own career behind the wheel, including why he gave up his career as a racing driver to become a team manager, and the key moments that led to him establishing himself as a constructor in his own right - despite him never designing so much as a hubcap in his life.

As is usual with Colossally, you can expect amusing anecdotes and amazing anorak facts in abundance, as Matt and Richard bring you right up to the point that Ferrari wins its first world championship Grand Prix at Silverstone, in 1951, before pausing to pick up the rest of the Ferrari story in Part 2.

    • Matt and Richard will be bringing members an exclusive Q&A episode at the end of Season 3, where they'll answer questions on each of the topics covered. So if you'd like to ask a question about Enzo Ferrari, head to Patreon.com/therace

Ferrari's early season struggles + We speak to Tsunoda ahead of his Red Bull debut Apr 02, 2025
    Show notes

We dissect Ferrari’s disappointing start to the season and ask if there’s any sign of a turnaround in the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast.

Ben Anderson and Roberto Boccafogli, who is a key part of The Race’s new Italian YouTube channel, join Edd Straw to consider an Italian perspective on goings on at Ferrari.

We also evaluate Lewis Hamilton’s start, and the impact of his sprint-race win in China, and how Italy has taken to him after his arrival.

The question of whether Kimi Antonelli has moved the needle in his home country is also discussed.

With The Race already on the ground in Japan, we hear from Luke Hinsull and Scott Mitchell-Malm, who were there for Tsunoda-related events in Tokyo, as well as asking what the new Red Bull Racing driver can achieve on home soil this weekend.

Scott even grabs a few minutes with Tsunoda himself to talk through his preparations and expectations ahead of Suzuka.

Is Verstappen papering over the cracks at a Red Bull team in crisis? Mar 31, 2025
    Show notes

In the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast, we ask to what extent Max Verstappen’s brilliance is papering over the cracks at Red Bull, given the team's struggles with its second driver, its difficult car, and the continued exodus of senior personnel.

Nelson Valkenburg and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Edd Straw to evaluate what Verstappen has to do to make things work at Red Bull, and what he makes of the latest driver switch.

We also look at Yuki Tsunoda’s prospects for Suzuka and beyond in place of Liam Lawson, and the skill set that should at least make him better prepared than his predecessor.

We also tackle more listener questions on a variety of topics ranging from who would be Verstappen’s optimum team-mate to the value of the four-times world champion’s sim-racing endeavours.

The Team Principal Podcast: Inside the high-stakes world of F1 politics Mar 30, 2025
    Show notes

The Team Principal Podcast is back! On episode 2, Otmar Szafnauer - the former TP of Racing Point, Alpine and Aston Martin - is joined by Ben Anderson to get into the thorny subject of F1 politics.

They begin by discussing internal politics at Red Bull, and whether they played a part in the team dropping Liam Lawson for Yuki Tsunoda after just two races. Otmar also shares his thoughts on how fellow TP Christian Horner has managed the situation.

After that, Otmar discusses the times in his career where he’s had to deal with intra-team politics, including the time he had to resist pressure from a team owner to sign a particular driver, and the time he had to convince Alpine management to capitalise on uncertainty around a driver’s contract. He also explains how team culture is essential to prevent political in-fighting within a team, and how politics contributed to his Alpine exit.

There’s also chat about inter-team politics, and the tactics teams use off-track to gain an edge over the opposition. Otmar also recalls the time he found himself in the middle of a political storm over the so-called ‘Pink Mercedes’ affair, and explains how and why alliances shift between teams. He also takes us into a meeting of team principals, explains how bosses use the media for their own benefit, and much more.

Plus, after Eddie Jordan’s sad recent passing, Otmar pays tribute to a fellow team principal gone too soon.

Lawson out, Tsunoda in: Why Red Bull are preparing an early driver change Mar 26, 2025
    Show notes

We discuss Red Bull’s imminent replacement of Liam Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda in the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast.

Jon Noble joins Edd Straw to discuss the move and explain what it says about Red Bull’s driver strategy.

We discuss why Lawson couldn’t extract the pace from the Red Bull RB21 that Max Verstappen can and what it was about his progress that persuaded the team to abandon him so quickly.

And with Tsunoda now having the chance of a lifetime, we ask if he’s got what it takes to make a success of his opportunity.
